Sir Keir Starmer has delivered a triumphant first speech …
Sir Keir said: “We need to move forward together. Now this wound, this lack of trust can only be healed by actions, not words, I know that. But we can make a start today with the simple acknowledgement that public service is a privilege and that your government should treat every single person in this country with respect.”
He also made a direct appeal to those who did not vote Labour in Thursday’s election, as he added: “We will carry the responsibility of your trust as we rebuild our country. But whether you voted Labour or not, in fact especially if you did not, I say to you directly my government will serve you. Politics can be a force for good, we will show that. We’ve changed the Labour party.”
“The work of change begins immediately. We will rebuild Britain”. …
Sir Keir’s speech came shortly after Rishi Sunak conceded defeat in Richmond, Yorkshire, where he won his seat with a 13,000-seat majority.

The change from the UK election was not unexpected (see also Letter to the Brethren: July 4, 2024).

King Charles III has appointed the third prime minister of his reign, after Sir Keir Starmer‘s Labour Party secured a landslide victory in Britain’s general election on July 4.
The king called Starmer to Buckingham Palace at 12 p.m. London time, or 7 a.m. ET, on Friday to officially ask him to form a government in the monarch’s name, which is the British equivalent of a swearing-in ceremony. …
Britain’s system of a constitutional monarchy means the sovereign’s role is to reign, not to rule. Though Charles is the head of state and national figurehead, he holds no political power.
The government, however, acts in the name of the monarch, and they hold constitutional and ceremonial functions. So, now Keir Starmer is the UK Prime Minister.
Keir Starmer’s comments about rebuilding Britain brought the following scripture to mind:

That said, the change in prime ministers will not solve the problems that the UK faces. The UK would need national repentance and that is not something Keir Starmer has called for.
