NASA rocket explodes, followed by proper launch of Russian rocket

The United States and Russia both tried to launch unmanned rockets. The USA one exploded during lift off, but Russia’s launch was successful:

The unmanned rocket exploded in midair Tuesday with loud booms echoing along the eastern Virginia coast.

The Antares rocket by contractor Orbital Sciences launched at 6:22 p.m. ET from a facility along the Atlantic Ocean. It had about 5,000 pounds of supplies and experiments.

What was it carrying?

The rocket was carrying various things, including spacewalk tools for the space station, flight equipment, food, books and computer resources for the crew.

Its total cargo was 4,883 pounds (2215 kilograms).

“It’s not as tragic as losing a life associated with it and so, we’re very happy to report that there were no injuries,” said Frank Culbertson, an executive vice president at Orbital Sciences Corp. ” That hardware, however, it’s very important and very high value to the company and to our customers.” http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/29/us/nasa-rocket-explosion-explainer/

Russia successfully launched an unmanned rocket with supplies for the International Space Station from Kazakhstan on Wednesday, hours after a catastrophic explosion destroyed a similar mission in the United States.

A Soyuz rocket and Progress 57 cargo ship blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The cargo ship is expected to dock with the ISS later in the day.

On Tuesday, an unmanned commercial rocket with supplies and equipment for the space station burst into fiery fragments just seconds after liftoff from Wallops Island, in the U.S. state of Virginia off the Atlantic coast.

Orbital Sciences Corporation, the company contracted by the U.S. government to send supplies to the space station, said it will not launch another Antares rocket until the cause of Tuesday’s explosion is determined.

“As far as next steps for the Antares, we will not fly until we understand the root cause and corrective action necessary to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” said Frank Culbertson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Advanced Programs Group at Orbital Sciences Corporation.

No one on the ground was hurt. The U.S. space agency, NASA, said the International Space Station crew “is in no danger of running out of food or other critical supplies.”

It was good that no one was killed by the explosion of the NASA rocket.

I vividly recall hearing about the explosion of the Space Shuttle Columbia back on February 1, 2003. All seven crew members on it were killed. One thought that crossed my mind was that although space vehicle disasters had occurred in the past, that this was a blow to the pride the USA had in its space program.

And the USA space program has never truly recovered since.

The Bible mentions the following as a curse to the unrepentant:

18 ‘And after all this, if you do not obey Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.
19 I will break the pride of your power; (Leviticus 26:18-19)

Yesterday’s explosion brought that scripture back to mind. It is not that the space program is the entire pride of the USA’s power (it is only a small part), but it is a signal that the USA is not leading as much in as many areas it did in the past.

I suspect that Russia’s Vladimir Putin smiled when his country’s rocket successfully launched today, following the failure of the USA’s rocket.

Vladimir Putin recently made statements to the effect that the USA and others should not mess with Russia as it has a large nuclear arsenal. And, of course, a nuclear arsenal using Russian rockets.

Perhaps I should add that the Europeans are working on improving their space technology at this time (see European Technology and the Beast of Revelation). And for a time, Europe will apparently pass both the USA and Russia, until Russia finally will turn against the end time European power (Jeremiah 50:41-43).
