The New Madrid fault zone in the nation’s midsection is active and could spawn future large earthquakes, scientists reported.It’s “not dead yet,” said U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Susan Hough, who was part of the study published online Thursday by the journal Science.

Researchers have long debated just how much of a hazard New Madrid (MAD’-rihd) poses. The zone stretches 150 miles, crossing parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee…

“Our new results tell us that something is going on there, and therefore a repeat of the 1811-1812 sequence is possible,” Hough said…

One of the biggest earthquakes in U.S. history didn’t occur in California. Or Alaska. It happened in the country’s midsection some 200 years ago in an area where today seven states straddle the Mississippi River Valley.

And seismologists from the United States Geological Survey believe they’ve uncovered evidence that the New Madrid Seismic Zone, as the area that spawned the 1811-12 quakes is known, is still alive and kicking.

In the early 19th century, not many people lived in the region, but for those who did, the earthquakes must have been a gut-wrenching experience, says Susan Hough, a seismologist with the USGS in Pasadena, Calif., in an interview with NPR’s All Things Considered…

The USA is at risk of major damage from the New Madrid fault. And I have felt that way for years. I believe the probability of one exceeds 90% in the next several decades, hence the risk is higher than what some ‘experts’ believe or claim. I also believe that the supervolcano at Yellowstone will likely someday erupt and cause massive problems and that the ‘big one’ (massive earthquake) will eventually hit California.

Jesus warned about a time earthquakes and troubles:

8 … And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

We may be at this prophetic point as all the earthquakes and other problems that have happened in the past couple of years could be considered as “troubles.”
