Obama to Mexico and Costa Rica: Latin America in prophecy

US President Barack Obama is traveling to Mexico and Costa Rica:

Five months after Enrique Pena Nieto took office as Mexico’s new president, President Obama on Thursday embarks on a three-day trip to Mexico and Costa Rica with the intent of strengthening and expanding the United States’ critical relationship with Latin America.

A number of issues will be on the table, including security and immigration — as the U.S. hashes out immigration legislation that’s sure to include an expansion of border security, cooperation from Latin America will be critical…

When Mr. Obama speaks to Pena Nieto in Mexico City — in their first extensive meeting since Pena Nieto took office — the new Mexican administration could entreat the U.S. to support its bid to get involved in the United States’ free trade negotiations with Europe. The U.S. is also working with Mexico and Canada on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) with Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam…in San Jose, Costa Rica. Mr. Obama will be there to participate in the SICA Summit, a meeting of the Central American Integration System. The economic and political organization includes Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras and Belize. The Dominican Republic is not a SICA member country but is expected to participate. Since taking office in December, Pena Nieto has moved to end the widespread access it gave U.S. security agencies helping fight drug trafficking and organized crime. The changes mark a dramatic shift from the policies of Pena Nieto’s predecessor, Felipe Calderon, who was lauded by the U.S. for boosting cooperation between the two countries as he led an aggressive attack on Mexico’s drug cartels.

The USA often makes overtures to Latin America.

However, my read of Bible prophecy suggests that Latin America will end up aligning with Europe. Most of the peoples in Latin America are Roman Catholic. And this is true of nearly every nation there. Religion, thus, is a major cultural tie to Europe. Having a pope from Argentina who now live in Rome is also be a factor in connecting Latin America to Europe.

Certain parts of Latin America are also politically quite connected to Europe. French Guiana is actually part of France and uses the Euro as its currency. Suriname still maintains close ties to the Netherlands. There exists certain legal connections between those of Portugal and Brazil which ties those nations relatively closely. Guyana used to be part of the British Commonwealth (however, because of ethnic reasons, I suspect that in the end it may decide to be more closely aligned with the rest of Latin America and continental Europe than with the UK). Most of the Spanish-speaking nations have ties to each other as well as Spain. In the future, all will apparently have ties to Europe (cf. Revelation 13:1-9).
