Obama vows to dismantle Islamic State; Australia to bomb; Al-Shabaab leader dead

US President Barack Obama spoke out against the Islamic State while in Europe today:

U.S. President Barack Obama says the U.S. and its allies will degrade and ultimately defeat the Islamic State, in the same way they have gone after al-Qaida and Somalia’s al-Shabab.

Speaking to reporters Friday at the close of the NATO summit in Wales, President Obama said he is confident an international coalition can be formed that can push back the militants, who have seized large amounts of territory in Iraq and Syria.

Obama said NATO members agree unanimously that the Islamic State poses a significant threat to countries within the alliance, and he said they recognize the need to take action.

“I did not get any resistance or pushback to the basic notion that we have a critical role to play in rolling back this savage organization that is causing so much chaos in the region and is harming so many people,” said President Obama.

The United States is bringing its allies together in a coalition to combat Islamic State militants in Iraq.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spearheaded the effort Friday on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Wales.

The State Department says 10 countries were represented at the meeting, including the United States, Britain, France and Germany. Australia was the only non-NATO member present.

Kerry reassured the leaders that the U.S. is not talking about sending ground forces into Iraq. He referred to that as a “red line” for everybody, vowing “no boots on the ground.” But he said there are many ways the coalition could “train, advise, assist and equip” Iraqi security forces, and others prepared to take on the militants.

Western leaders have said they will not be intimidated by the Islamic State, which has beheaded two American journalists and is threatening to kill a third captive, a Briton, in response to U.S. airstrikes against the militants’ positions in Iraq.

Kerry said a “holistic” approach to the Islamic State will require military and humanitarian components, as well as pursuit of the group’s financial sources. He indicated the group’s presence in Syria must also be addressed.

Australia has announced it is prepared to participate in future air strikes against Islamic State jihadists in Iraq as part of a coalition of like-minded countries.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Defence Minister David Johnston met with their counterparts from the United States, the United Kingdom and other western countries on Friday at the NATO summit in Wales.

Ms Bishop said leaders discussed a range of options to combat the scourge of Islamic State – also known as ISIL – in Iraq.

“The countries that have expressed a willingness to tackle ISIL head on have also looked at what more can be done in terms of air strikes and Australia will respond when a formal request is made,” Ms Bishop told reporters at Celtic Manor golf resort in Newport.

“The red line is combat troops on the ground. There is no interest from any country present to commit combat troops.

“But there is much that can be done to combat ISIL in other ways and Australia is prepared to play its part in combating ISIL because it is a direct domestic security threat to Australia.”

The Pentagon has confirmed that Ahmed Abdi Godane, the leader of the Islamist militant group al-Shabaab, was killed in a US air strike earlier this week.

The United States previously said that the strike inside Somalia had targeted Godane, but did not know whether he had been killed.

“We have confirmed that Ahmed Godane, the co-founder of al-Shabaab, has been killed,” said rear admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, describing it as a “major symbolic and operational loss” for the militant group, which aligned itself with al-Qaida.

Al-Shabaab is fighting to topple Somalia’s western-backed government and regularly launches bombings and gun attacks against state targets and civilians. So, Australia plans to be involved with bombing.

Despite the death of Ahmed Abdi Godane, terrorism is not over. Nor will this bring peace.

The groups like the Islamic State and Al-Shabaab are encouraging the West to embrace the idea of an international/regional approach to containing Islamic terrorism.

US President Obama and others have made statements suggesting that they would endorse some a type of Islamic caliphate or confederation of predominantly Islamic nations to resolve matters there. This type of coalition will happen per Daniel 11:40-43 and Ezekiel 30:2-8.

Although that will end in war and destruction according to the Bible, a time of temporary peace is expected (). Yet remember that the Bible teaches:

Destruction is coming. Bombing Somalia, bombing the Islamic State, and otherwise killing will not bring peace in this age.
