Protesters fined and arrested in Canada, USA plans its own truck convoy protest

The Canadian government of Justin Trudeau, as well as some courts, are trying to put an end to the truckers’ Freedom Convoy 2022:

Police have clashed with demonstrators in Canada’s capital, Ottawa, as they move to end a three-week anti-vaccine mandate protest, with 100 arrests made.

The operation started early on Friday, with some officers on horseback, after the government invoked the Emergencies Act to crack down on the protest.

Some protesters who resisted were thrown to the ground and had their hands zip-tied behind their backs.

Police have also accused protesters of using children as a shield.

A group of protesters have remained in the city in defiance of orders to leave. Footage from the scene showed hundreds of police officers advancing into the heart of the protest zone, next to Parliament Hill.

Some of the remaining protesters formed a line in front of approaching officers, linking arms and singing O Canada – the national anthem.

“Freedom was never free,” protester Kevin Homaund told the Associated Press. “So what if they put the handcuffs on us and they put us in jail?” …

“DEMONSTRATORS: You must leave,” Ottawa police wrote on Twitter. “Anyone within the unlawful protest site may be arrested.”

Police have also towed 21 vehicles as part of the operation. No protesters were injured during the operation and those arrested face various charges including mischief, Ottawa’s interim police chief Steve Bell said.

He would not say how many protesters remain at the site of the demonstration or how long the police operation is expected to take.

“We will work day and night until this is completed,” he said. …

Conservative interim leader Candice Bergen called on Twitter for MPs to return to Parliament on Saturday to stop the “overreach” – referring to Mr Trudeau’s order. …

Residents of Ottawa, Canada have filed a lawsuit against the Freedom Convoy 2022 protesters seeking up to $20 million out of the total amount of money raised in donations worldwide to be redistributed to citizens of the city, The Globe and Mail first reported.

An Ontario Superior Court judge in Ottawa then ordered the freezing of the protesters’ funds …

The order states that defendants who disobey it “may be held to be in contempt of court and may be imprisoned, fined, or have [their] assets seized.” It also gives defendants 24 hours to apply for an order granting them sufficient funds for ordinary living expenses and legal advice and representation.

Freezing bank accounts, arresting protesters, fining supporters, etc. is not something that has been commonly done in the West against basically peaceful (though noisy and annoying) protesters. Normally, judges DO NOT freeze assets until AFTER a trial. The judge apparently wanted to harm the protest quickly.

OTTAWA, Ontario — Police aggressively pushed back protesters in Canada’s besieged capital on Saturday, towing away trucks, arresting dozens of protesters and finally retaking control of the streets in front of the country’s Parliament buildings. Scores of trucks left under the increasing pressure, raising authorities’ hopes for an end to the three-week protest against the country’s COVID-19 restrictions and the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The street in front of Parliament Hill, the collection of government offices that includes the Parliament buildings, was the heart of the protests. It had been occupied by protesters and their trucks since late last month, turning into a carnival on weekends.

“They are trying to push us all away,” said one protester, Jeremy Glass of Shelburne, Ontario, as authorities forced the crowds to move further from the Parliament buildings. “The main camp is seized now. We’re no longer in possession of it.”

Canadian authorities also announced they had used emergency powers to seize 76 bank accounts connected to protesters, totaling roughly $3.2 million ($2.5 million U.S.). …

At least 47 people were arrested Saturday, police said. Now, to answer the question in the tweet at the beginning of this post, what Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has done is shown that even so-called ‘liberal democracies’ are willing to take the same type of steps totalitarian governments take against those who protest against it. In several ways, what the Trudeau Administration has done look to be preludes for what will happen in Europe (e.g, see Canada invokes emergency powers, considers truck protesters terrorists: A prelude to 666? and Canadian government goes after bank accounts of protesters and those willing to help protesters: shades of 666!).

As far as Europe goes, I expect civil unrest to be followed by a leader that will proclaim peace (cf. Daniel 8:25, 11:23-24), but also declare some type of emergency and implement totalitarianism beyond what is happening in places like Canada (cf. Revelation 13:1-18).

The government is taking steps most Canadians would not have thought possible a month ago. The above also reminds me of what has been happening in the USA related to the January 6, 2021 protests in Washington, D.C.

In the USA, a trucking convoy protest is scheduled to start next week:

Thousands of semitruck drivers are expected to take part in the coast-to-coast “People’s Convoy” to protest government COVID-19 mandates starting Wednesday, Feb. 23, says organizer Maureen Steele.

“We have well over 1,000 truckers. I’ve lost count right now and I know it’s going to grow,” Steele told Newsmax’s “Eric Bolling: The Balance.”

“Our support staff is enormous. We have the Unity Project and they have hundreds of nonprofits that are under them so they literally have thousands of people helping pull this event off. So, it’s a huge undertaking, as you can imagine, getting all these trucks and all these people across the country and managing safety and logistics and comms. It’s an enormous group of people. I know Canada had hundreds. We have thousands,” she added.

Steele says the protest will depart on Interstate 40 heading east from Barstow, California.

Truckers are demanding an end to the Emergency Powers Act concerning the pandemic, and to “restore our nation’s constitution.”

COVID policies around the world have been protested as many see them as totalitarian governmental overreach. Others are fearful and want societal restrictions.

This is causing protests of various types around the world.

Trucker involvement has just added to the protests in several places.

Jesus taught:

25 Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. (Matthew 12:25)

We are seeing more divide in many parts of the world. This seems to be consistent with the ride of the second horseman of the Apocalypse:

3 When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come and see.” 4 Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword. (Revelation 6:3-4)

While this is commonly called the red horse (or horseman) of war, that is not quite what is stated. Notice that he “takes peace from the earth AND that people should kill one another.” Could it be that events in 2019/2020, such as COVID-19 are consistent with taking “peace from the earth”?

Around the world people are AFRAID. The feeling of normalcy is gone for many around the globe. Consider that the travel restrictions are because of fear. Many in the media and government officials are saying everything will not go back to how it was and that we need to accept what they have called “the new normal.” Speculatively, could this be related to the opening of the second seal?

Not since World War II have we seen anything affect the entire planet so much. I have had a kind of gnawing feeling that perhaps the second seal was opened in the late Spring or early Summer of 2020 and that perhaps we needed to better reconsider the opening of the second seal as possible. Now, we also have many across Europe fearful related to what is going on related to Ukraine and Russia.

The literal Greek here for “peace” (εἰρήνην transliterated as eirēnēn) in Revelation 6 can be interpreted to mean taking away prosperity as well (see BibleHub.com). COVID-19 has, to a degree, done that. People are afraid or at least uneasy to a degree we have not seen around the world anytime in the 21st century.

Barnes Notes on the Bible states:

The power given to him that sat on the horse: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another. This would seem to indicate that the condition immediately preceding this was a condition of tranquility, and that this was now disturbed by some cause producing discord and bloodshed. This idea is confirmed by the original words – τὴν εἰρήνην tēn eirēnēn – “the peace”; that is, the previously existing peace. When peace in general is referred to, the word is used without the article: Matthew 10:34, “Think not that I am come to send peace – βαλεῖν εἰρήνην balein eirēnēn – upon the earth.”

So, this rider is not just a rider of war, but taking away THE peace.

Peace has been taken from much of the earth since COVID.

Furthermore, protests can flare into civil unrest and worse. Not just because of actions of protesters, but also police and government officials.

Although they may temporarily help shake off aspects of totalitarianism, protests will not solve the problems in the world today.

The world needs Jesus, national repentance, and the coming Kingdom of God.
