Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may have more in common than they think.

During the fifth Republican presidential debate, Trump said the United States should “penetrate” parts of the Internet in order to stop the Islamic State. “I would certainly be open to closing areas where we are at war with somebody,” he said.

“You talk freedom of speech. You talk freedom of anything you want. I don’t want them using our Internet to take our young, impressionable youth.”

The comment, which quickly drew fire at home, was oddly resonant with remarks being made at almost the same time on the other side of the world.

On Wednesday morning, local time, China’s president delivered a keynote speech at the World Internet Conference, a high-security summit in the southern city of Wuzhen. “As in the real world, freedom and order are both necessary in cyberspace,” Xi said.

Rather than focus on a bombing campaign in Syria, or sending in ground troops, the billionaire offered a more novel, technological strategy: to “close off areas of the internet”.

China’s President Xi Jinping has called on countries to respect one another’s “cyber sovereignty” and different internet governance models.

Mr Xi said countries had the right to choose how to develop and regulate their internet.

Who’s in charge of the internet? In the last 24 hours two political figures, one Chinese, the other American, have given their views on this issue.

Both Xi Jinping and Donald Trump clearly thinks it is time for national governments to grasp control of the internet to bend it to their own political purposes.

China’s leader was speaking in Wuzhen at an event called the World Internet Conference, which sounds grand and did bring in delegates from leading technology companies including Apple and Microsoft, plus the Internet naming body ICANN. But the only world leaders in attendance were from Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, countries presumably sympathetic to China’s view of how the internet should be governed. …

But some American politicians may share his view that it is time to rein in the internet.

Take Donald Trump. At last night’s Republican debate, he declared that technology was the way to take on the terrorist threat: “We should be able to penetrate the internet and find out exactly where Isis is.” The internet was “our idea” but the US needed to “close off areas of the internet” because Isis was using it better. “We can do that if we use our good people.” …

The idealistic internet pioneers – most of them American – saw it as a global community without borders, a space for free exchange of ideas untrammelled by national laws. The more control governments think they can have over communications on the internet, the more likely they are to at least selectively remove/block comments that various politicians do not want others to see.

While most people in the West are not particularly concerned about government monitoring etc, the Bible talks about the fact that God will finish the work and cut it short (Roman 9:28; see also Preparing for the ‘Short Work’ and The Famine of the Word).

The following seems to be part of the reason why:

11 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God,
“That I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread,
Nor a thirst for water,
But of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 They shall wander from sea to sea,
And from north to east;
They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord,
But shall not find it. (Amos 8:11-12)

In places like the USA, perhaps under the guise of “neutrality,” perhaps under the guise of the revised “Patriot Act,” perhaps under the guise of “public welfare,” perhaps under claims to prevent dissent, perhaps under the claims it is fighting potential terrorism, and/or perhaps because of alleged “intolerance,” calling parts of the gospel of the kingdom of God message “hate speech” and/or national security threats/issues, something will be done to stop perhaps all of the organized media efforts to proclaim biblical truths. A famine of the word is coming (Amos 8:11-12; cf. Romans 10:14-15) as the work/word will be cut short (Romans 9:28).

Xi Jingping is the leader of the most populous nation on the planet. Donald Trump is by far currently the highest polling Republican candidate to be the next President of the United States. Lest this seem partisan, the Democrat Attorney General of the USA has claimed that the USA government should investigate those who have the potential to upset Muslims–this is very broad reaching and shows that elements of the USA are not committed to free speech, etc.:

Pamela Geller: “This Is Sedition By The Obama Administration.” Responding to Lynch’s comments, anti-Islam blogger Pamela Geller asked “[w]hat backlashes” Lynch was referring to, claiming “This is sharia enforcement,” and that “This is sedition by the Obama administration.” [Pamelageller.com, 12/4/15]

Notice that if the USA government thinks something might incite violence, not that someone is actually calling for violence, the USA government wants to use its power to go against such views. Thus, the USA is telling everyone it believes it has major censorship powers. Some are warning about this, but the politicians have their own agendas.

Notice something that the Bible warns about:

2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity,
3 Who sharpen their tongue like a sword,
And bend their bows to shoot their arrows — bitter words,
4 That they may shoot in secret at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear. (Psalms 64:2-4)

Interfering with and even attacking those speaking the truth is expected. In this internet age, the most logical way to prevent people from finding the truth of the words of the Lord (Amos 8:11-12) would be to prevent those with the truth from remaining on the internet. Eliminating blogs and reports that governments do not care for is a plan that many governments have.

The ‘work’ (in the Amos 8:12 and Romans 9:28 sense) may be stopped by government officials (like on the internet, radio, etc.). Persecutions will be began because people of the holy covenant (Daniel 11:29-35) are warning the world of the results of their sins (which they will not want pointed out), pointing out falsehoods in other religions, and teaching that the King of the North is fulfilling certain prophecies in Daniel 11.

The faithful may be saying things that are not “politically correct” to the point that one or more governments will take strong action (especially if we are saying, and I expect to help do this, that a certain individual is the King of the North and that he will invade and destroy the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, etc.). Yet, God’s work still will be accomplished and the final phase of the work completed.

Although China has long had internet controls while wanting even more, there will be many NOT affiliated with China who will be involved in preventing the truth from being fully told on the internet.
