Reuters reported the following:
Russia bombards Ukraine ports, threatens ships, jolting world grain markets
Updated July 20, 2023
MYKOLAIV/NEAR KUPIANSK, Ukraine, July 20 (Reuters) – Russia destroyed homes and damaged the Chinese consulate in Odesa on Thursday in a third straight night of air strikes on Ukrainian ports, and issued a threat against Ukraine-bound vessels in the Black Sea.
The United States said the warning indicated Moscow might attack ships at sea following its withdrawal from a U.N.-brokered deal to let Ukraine export grain. The signals that Moscow was willing to use force to reimpose its blockade of one of the world’s biggest food exporters set global prices soaring.
Moscow says it will not participate in the year-old grain deal without better terms for its own food and fertiliser sales. The United Nations says Russia’s decision threatens food security for the world’s poorest people.
Kyiv is hoping to resume exports without Russia’s participation. But no ships have sailed from its ports since Moscow pulled out of the deal on Monday, and insurers have had doubts about whether to underwrite policies for trade in a war zone.
Since quitting the deal, Moscow has rained missiles down nightly on Ukraine’s two biggest port cities, Odesa and Mykolaiv. Thursday’s strikes appeared to be the worst yet, with local authorities reporting at least 19 people wounded in Mykolaiv and eight wounded and one killed in Odesa. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-warns-ships-black-sea-ukraine-create-temporary-grains-export-route-2023-07-19/
Wheat prices have been rising this week since Russia announced that it would no longer participate in the grain-deal.
Related to food inflation, Russia, and Ukraine, we put together the following video on our Bible News Prophecy YouTube channel:
Did you know that the sanctioned lands of Russia and Belarus are dominant suppliers of ingredients used in modern fertilizers? Are you aware that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that 33% of the farmland in Ukraine may not be planted and/or harvested because of Russia’s ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine? Are parts of the world like Sudan, Lebanon, and the USA experiencing food price inflation? What about impact on the Palestinians in Gaza? Could any of this help lead to the rise of the King of the South? What are some factors that look to increase rice prices? Did Jesus warn of wars and troubles? What are three foods that Ukraine exports that are associated with the shortages and food price inflation of the ride of the third horseman of the Apocalypse? What does Jesus say His followers should do? Dr. Thiel addresses these matters in this video.

There are mixed reports about Ukraine’s counter-offensive against Russia. Here are two contrasting items:
Ukraine counter-offensive is far from failure – US general
Ukraine’s counter-offensive against Russia is far from a failure, but the fight ahead will be long and bloody, the top U.S. general said on Tuesday, even as casualties on both sides mount and the front lines have moved only incrementally.
The United States and other allies have spent months building Ukraine a “mountain of steel” of weaponry and training Ukrainian forces in combined arms techniques to help Kyiv pierce formidable Russian defenses during its counter-offensive.
Asked whether the counter-offensive was a failure, at least so far, General Mark Milley, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said: “It is far from a failure. I think that it’s way too early to make that kind of call. …
Kyiv says it is deliberately advancing slowly to avoid high casualties on fortified defensive lines strewn with landmines, and is focused for now on degrading Russia’s logistics and command. Moscow says the Ukrainian counteroffensive has failed. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-counter-offensive-is-far-failure-us-general-2023-07-18/
Why Ukraine’s counter-offensive is failing
Diplomacy is more important than ever as Kyiv simply doesn’t have the human resources or physical infrastructure to achieve its goals.
Last March, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that as a result of significant Western support, the Ukrainian military’s spring offensive had “a very good chance for success.” Former Chief of the British General Staff, General Richard Dannatt, went so far as to suggest that Ukraine’s offensive would be so successful that Putin “may be swept out of the Kremlin” as a result.
Combat reality, however, has now swept away those optimistic claims and exposed the harsh truth: Ukraine is unlikely to militarily evict Russia out of its territory, no matter how many men they feed into battle.
As unpalatable as it is for all supporters of Ukraine, the most prudent course for Zelensky may now be to seek a negotiated settlement that preserves as much freedom and territory as possible for Kyiv. Ending the war now would end the deaths and injuries for tens of thousands of Ukraine’s brave and heroic fighters — men and women whom Kyiv will need to rebuild their country once the war ends. https://responsiblestatecraft.org/2023/07/19/why-ukraines-counter-offensive-is-failing/
A negotiated settlement is not what Ukraine’s President Zelensky wants. A negotiated settlement would tend to mean that Russia would officially (which it says it already does officially have) consider Crimea and much of the Donbas as Russia territory. The Kyiv regime has not wanted that to be seriously considered, but may find that as its best course of action.
As long time readers of this COGwriter Church of God News page are aware, for at many years I have written that at least part of the territory that Ukraine claims would ultimately be supportive of Russia. We have seen some of that already, and perhaps we will see Ukraine officially accept at least some territorial loss.
Jesus warned:
8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)
We have seen nations against nations, limited famines, troubles, and are in the beginning of sorrows. And the situation between Russia and Ukraine has been consistent with that.
We are getting to the end of the 6,000 years that God has allowed humans to rule themselves, which will soon be followed by the 1,000 year reign of Christ. Pray for Jesus to return and God’s Kingdom to come (Matthew 6:10).
But prior to Jesus’ return, “there will be great tribulation” as Jesus foretold (Matthew 24:21).
Jesus told His followers:
36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man. (Luke 21:36)
As we get closer to the end of the age, it is even more imperative that we do so.
