Russia pushing for dominance of the farthest north, yet it is not the biblical King of the North

Russia has again pushed its legal bid to have dominance over the farthest northern territory of any nation:

MOSCOW— Russia has submitted its bid for vast territories in the Arctic to the United Nations, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The ministry said in a statement that Russia is claiming 1.2 million square kilometers (over 463,000 square miles) of Artic sea shelf extending more than 350 nautical miles (about 650 kilometers) from the shore.

Russia, the U.S., Canada, Denmark and Norway have all been trying to assert jurisdiction over parts of the Arctic, which is believed to hold up to a quarter of the planet’s undiscovered oil and gas. Rivalry for Arctic resources has intensified as shrinking polar ice is opening up new opportunities for exploration.

Russia was the first to submit its claim in 2002, but the U.N. sent it back for lack of evidence.

The ministry said that the resubmitted bid contains new arguments. “Ample scientific data collected in years of Arctic research are used to back the Russian claim,” it said.

Russia expects the U.N. Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf to start looking at its bid in the fall, the ministry said.

In 2007, Moscow staked a symbolic claim to the Arctic seabed by dropping a canister containing the Russian flag on the ocean floor from a small submarine at the North Pole.

Amid tensions with the West over Ukraine, the Kremlin also has moved to beef up Russian military forces in the Arctic. The effort has included the restoration of a Soviet-era military base on the New Siberian Islands and other military outposts in the Arctic. The Bible teaches that Russia is the power of the ‘far north.’ Notice the following:

3 O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal…6 from the far north and all its troops–many people are with you (Ezekiel 38:3,6).

14 Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog…15…you will come from your place out of the far north… (Ezekiel 38:14-15).

1 O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal; 2 and I will turn you around and lead you on, bringing you up from the far north (Ezekiel 39:1-2).

The old Worldwide Church of God taught:

“Gog” in the land of “Magog” is the vast regions of the U.S.S.R. in northern Eurasia extending from the Baltic to the Pacific. “Meshech” is Moscow, “Tubal” is Tobol ‘sk (Why Russia Will Not Attack the United States, reprint 1980, p. 8).

Rosh is the ancient Hebrew name for the Russ (“blonds”) who settled in the plains of Eastern Europe in the ninth century A.D. They gave their name to the Russian nation. The people of Rosh are among the White Russians of Byelorussia today. Living next to the people of Rosh are Meshech and Tubal…Josephus calls them the Moschevi and Thobelites…Together, the Caucasian branches of Meshech and Tubal form the two distinct branches of the Great Russians of today (Ibid, pp. 10,11).

It may be of interest to note that the official name of the Russian Federation is Rossiyskaya Federatsiya and hence bears a similarity to the Hebrew word Rosh.

The Bible points to Russia being the power of the ‘far north,’ and if it gets more access to the areas in the Arctic, that is getting to be farther north than any other nation.

Some have incorrectly concluded, however, that Russia is the ‘king of the North‘ of Daniel 11:40-45 (see also Is Russia the King of the North?).

Yet, the Bible distinguishes between the king of the North and a power that is north of the king of the North. Notice the following:

40 “At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. … 44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him. (Daniel 11:40, 44-45)

Notice that the king of the North is disturbed by a power that is to his north and east. This shows that there is a power that is north and east of the European king of the North. That helps show that Russia is NOT the biblical king of the North as Russia is north and east of Europe.

But Daniel 11:44-45 is not the only passage of scripture that helps show this. Notice something from Jeremiah:

50:41 “Behold, a people shall come from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Shall be raised up from the ends of the earth.
42 They shall hold the bow and the lance;
They are cruel and shall not show mercy.
Their voice shall roar like the sea;
They shall ride on horses,
Set in array, like a man for the battle,
Against you, O daughter of Babylon.

43 “The king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
And his hands grow feeble;
Anguish has taken hold of him,
Pangs as of a woman in childbirth…”(Jeremiah 50:41-43).

The Bible teaches that it is a European power that is end time Babylon (cf. Revelation 17). And notice that it, like the king of the North in Daniel 11:44-45, will have problems because of a power from the north and the ends of the earth.

I would also add that not only is Russia amongst the farthest north of the nations, it is also probably the farthest east of the nations (depending on how east is counted). Russia dominates two of ‘the ends of the earth.’

While Russia is in the far north, it is a European, king of the North, power that will form according to Bible prophecy. It is prophesied to dominate the world (Revelation 13:1-10) and world events, and the USA. But ultimately this power will be in conflict with Russia (Daniel 11:44). Though I believe that the Europeans and Russians will cooperate for a time and Europe may even make a deal to return Alaska (and possibly parts of Canada) to Russia (see Will the Anglo-Saxon Nations be Divided and Have People Taken as Slaves?).
