The Economist on Obama’s Impression of Friends & Foes; plus, wheat problems.
A reader sent me a link to the following by The Economist, which had some negative things to say about America’s influence under its President Obama:
America is no longer as alarming to its foes or reassuring to its friends
AMERICA’S allies are nervous. With Russia grabbing territory, China bullying its neighbours and Syria murdering its people, many are asking: where is Globocop? Under what circumstances will America act to deter troublemakers? What, ultimately, would America fight for?
The answer to this question matters. Rogue states will behave more roguishly if they doubt America’s will to stop them. As a former head of Saudi intelligence recently said of Vladimir Putin’s land grab in Ukraine: “While the wolf is eating the sheep, there is no shepherd to come to the rescue.” Small wonder that Barack Obama was asked, at every stop during his just-completed four-country swing through Asia, how exactly he plans to wield American power. How would the president respond if China sought to expand its maritime borders by force? How might he curb North Korea’s nuclear provocations? At every press conference he was also quizzed about Ukraine, for world news follows an American president everywhere…
Nowhere is the perception of growing American timidity so strong as in the Middle East. Eleven years ago America conquered Iraq in a matter of weeks. Yet when Mr Obama pulled America’s last troops out in 2011, there was little to show for all the lives lost and billions spent. The regime America has left behind in Baghdad is barely friendly.
In the rest of the region the story is not much cheerier…
Mr Obama’s hands-off approach dismays the foreign-policy establishment back home. Democrats and Republicans alike chide him for leaving a security vacuum for enemies to fill…
Some will celebrate the decline of America’s ability to deter. But wherever they live, they may find that whatever replaces the old order is much worse. One of the curses the Bible prophesies is:
19 I will break the pride of your power; I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. 20 And your strength shall be spent in vain; for your land shall not yield its produce, nor shall the trees of the land yield their fruit (Leviticus 26:18-20)
This is increasingly happening to the USA, but that power is not completely gone, and produce is still growing. But there are problems in many areas:
Kansas producers will harvest one of the state’s smallest wheat crops in years as a cold winter and drought affected growth and with harvest still weeks away more deterioration could occur without rain, crop scouts concluded after touring the state’s wheat fields this week.
At the end of their tour on Thursday, scouts estimated the state’s wheat crop at 260.7 million bushels, down 18% from 2013’s 319.2 million bushels….
“[Wheat] won’t get any better even if it does rain. [Rain] will only preserve what is left,” Ben Handcock, executive vice president of the Wheat Quality Council, told Farm Futures by telephone.
While poor crop conditions had been expected, Handcock said the dire conditions in some areas surprised him. USDA on Monday rated 37% of the Kansas crop poor to very poor.
The tour largely focused on the Kansas wheat, but side trips were made to Oklahoma and Nebraska. That being said, The Economist is correct that the absence of the USA will be scary. The Bible tells of the final time of the Gentiles rising up (Luke 21:24) which correlates to the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7), also known as the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21).
