Time: Snowden asks for extended stay in Russia, and German outrage at USA grows

Edward Snowden wants to remain in Russia another year, while Germany is getting more upset with the USA related to the Snowden leaks as subsequent events involving revelations of USA espionage as Time reports:

Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden has formally asked Russia to extend his asylum there, according to Russian media, as he faces charges in the United States for leaking details of mass government surveillance.

The Russian news service RT quoted a Snowden lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, in reporting that Snowden had requested another year of asylum, a move he had been expected to make. “We have submitted documents to prolong his stay in Russia,” Kucherena said Wednesday. http://time.com/2969406/edward-snowden-russia-nsa-leaks/

German Mistrust of the U.S. Deepens Amid Latest Spy Scandals

U.S. Ambassador John Emerson was called into the Foreign Office in Berlin to explain the latest case of alleged U.S. espionage against the German government. It wasn’t the first time. Since last fall, when German Chancellor Angela Merkel learnedthat the U.S. had been tapping her cell phone for years, U.S spying allegations have eroded decades of trust between Berlin and Washington. But the mess just keeps getting worse.Last week alone saw two separate scandals involving U.S. espionage in Germany. The first one broke on Thursday, when German media reported that the U.S. National Security Agency, or NSA, has been spying on a German privacy advocate who works to protect Internet users from the snooping of … the NSA. The following day, July 4, a second scandal broke in the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung and other media, which reported that an employee of Germany’s foreign-intelligence service, the BND, had confessed to selling secrets to the U.S. government. New details of that case continued to emerge on Monday, with Reuters reporting that the CIA was involved in the spying operation that led to the man’s recruitment. But German officials have confirmed little about the investigation, saying only that a 31-year-old man was arrested July 2 on suspicion of spying for a foreign government.

So Chancellor Merkel, who is on a trip to China this week, was cautious when asked about the case on Monday. “If this is true, then I believe we are dealing with a very serious development,” she told a news conference in Beijing. “I would see this as a clear contradiction to what I understand as trusting cooperation of intelligence services as well as of partners.”

Not everyone in the German leadership has been so diplomatic. After their long experience living under the watch of their own secret police — first the Nazi gestapo and then the East German Stasi — the German public is particularly sensitive to issues of individual privacy. So they were especially alarmed last year when Edward Snowden, the NSA whistle-blower, revealed how millions of German citizens, including Chancellor Merkel, had been caught up in the NSA’s dragnet surveillance programs.

William Binney, another NSA whistle-blower, testified last week before the ongoing parliamentary inquiry into the Snowden leaks in Germany, and his characterization of U.S. spying practices as “totalitarian” and “senseless” made headlines across the country. The latest set of spying allegations came out against this background, and the public reaction was summed up nicely over the weekend by German President Joachim Gauck, who said if the allegations are true, “It’s really time to say, ‘Enough already!’”

“The spying just adds to the feeling of exasperation, disillusionment, fatigue with America,” says Tempel. “It becomes so much harder to defend the transatlantic relationship.” That issue becomes more important — especially for younger German voters — as each new spying scandal breaks, and that has made it costlier for a German politician to tout the U.S. as a trusted friend and ally. “This is indicative of larger trust issues,” says Stelzenmüller of the German Marshall Fund. “This isn’t something that just blows over.” http://time.com/2963472/spy-scandals-damage-us-german-alliance/

Russia may or may not extend Edward Snowden’s stay. Personally, I believe Russian President Vladimir Putin is mulling over how to best play this. On the one hand, he may allow it to show the USA that he is annoyed with it and it can do nothing to stop him about this. On the other hand, if he thinks that denying the stay would improve relations with the USA enough, he might have it denied. We will see.

But the bigger issue is Germany. This is not really going to blow over. All of the revelations and espionage scandals have convinced many Germans who were USA allies that the USA does not consider Germany as a friend, but as a military and economic threat.

Germany to spy on US for first time since 1945 after ‘double agent’ scandal

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government is planning to scrap a no-spy agreement Germany has held with Britain and the United States since 1945 in response to an embarrassing US-German intelligence service scandal which has deeply soured relations between Berlin and Washington.

The unprecedented change to Berlin’s counter-espionage policy was announced by Ms Merkel’s Interior Minister, Thomas de Maizière. He said that Berlin wanted “360‑degree surveillance” of all intelligence-gathering operations in Germany.

The intelligence services of the Allied victors, the United States, Britain and France, have hitherto been regarded as “friendly” to Germany. Their diplomatic and information-gathering activities were exempted from surveillance by Berlin’s equivalent of M15 – the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND).

But Mr de Maizière told Bild that he was now not ruling out permanent German counter-espionage surveillance of US, British and French intelligence operations. Notice that Germany had a no spy agreement with the USA, but because the USA keeps violating it, Germany has decided that the USA and the UK are not really friends and that Germany needs to spy on them. The USA has already agreed to share espionage data and techniques with the Germans because of the Snowden leaks. This all means means that Germany will be in an even better position to spy on the USA.

As I have written before, the ramifications of the Snowden leaks are that it will be easier for America to cease to exist. Germany has been outraged by the revelations about what the USA and UK have been doing and this will hurt the USA economically and militarily.

It is my view that Edward Snowden’s disclosures will make it easier for the Europeans to fulfill at least the following prophecies:

15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

The USA spying and then getting caught again, and repeatedly agreeing to share espionage data with the Germans will help the German military (and possibly also its economy) more than most realize. The Snowden matter will help lead to the destruction of the United States. The USA is taking steps that basically have guaranteed it. And this is consistent with end time biblical prophecy. The USA has repeatedly upset Germany and Germany is not intending to forget. Most in the USA have no idea how serious a matter this is.

Although even most of the Germans do not realize that they (and their end-time allies) will rise up and destroy the USA (cf. Isaiah 10:7), the Bible shows that they will in Isaiah 10:5-11 and Daniel 11:39. As few in the USA believe this, they will be ‘caught unawares’ as Jesus warned (Luke 21:36, KJV).
