U.S. Senate approves $1.1 trillion spending bill–the ‘debt is almost mathematically impossible’ to repay

The Senate of the USA approved the proposed spending bill late last night:

The U.S. Senate has passed a massive $1.1 trillion spending bill after several days of political maneuvering and the threat of a federal government shutdown if it failed to pass.

The measure, passed late Saturday by a 56-40 vote, funds the government through the fiscal year. The bill will now be sent to the White House where President Barack Obama has said he will sign it into law.

Senator Ted Cruz, a freshman Republican from Texas with presidential aspirations, had demanded a vote on a proposal to cut funds from the bill that could be used for President Obama’s executive order on immigration.

However, the procedural maneuvering enabled Senate majority leader Harry Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, to push through a slew of Mr. Obama’s nominees for administration jobs and appointees for judicial positions who would have had a much more difficult time winning approval in January when Republicans take control of the Senate.

While the bill provides funding for nearly the entire government through September, it only funds the Department of Homeland Security until February 27. Republicans intend to try then to force the president to roll back his immigration policy that removes the threat of deportation from millions of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally.

President Obama said Friday that the bill includes provisions he does not like, but that there are other parts that ensure progress would continue on health insurance, climate change, early childhood education and job growth.

Senate Democrats also opposed major provisions, including one to roll back a prohibition in the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law. The provision prohibits banks from engaging in certain types of derivatives trading blamed for the 2008 financial crisis.

The Senate voted on Saturday night to approve a $1.1 trillion deal and avert a government shutdown, sending the legislation to President Barack Obama for his signature after an unusual weekend session and days of drama in the House.

Senate conservatives had tried to make a point about Obama’s immigration policy this weekend, but the result was Senate Democrats getting everything they wanted out of their last days of power.

In the end the Senate passed the $1.1 trillion spending bill, 56-40, but not before Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was able to begin moving forward on 24 of the president’s nominations, including controversial figures like Vivek Murthy to be the new surgeon general, White House adviser Tony Blinken to be the deputy secretary of State and Sarah Saldana to head Immigration and Customs enforcement and a dozen federal judges to lifetime appointments.

Republicans fought Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for months to block these nominees from moving forward and many believed as late as Friday that they’d won as the holidays approached. But when Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee took to the floor on Friday night to call for a vote on the president’s executive action on immigration and demand their colleagues stay through the weekend to do so rather than adjourn until Monday, they allowed Reid to exploit a procedural quirk and get the nominations rolling. http://www.politico.com/story/2014/12/conservatives-move-backfires-113556.html#ixzz3LsuXrTj2

So, another spending bill.

What this shows is that the USA will continue to have more debt and not properly resolve many of its financial problems.

Paying Down The Debt Is Now Almost Mathematically Impossible

Decades of expanding government programs, waste, endless and costly wars, etc. have racked up such an enormous pile of debt that it has become almost impossible to pay it down.

A lot of folks don’t realize that, since the end of World War II, the US government’s total tax revenue has been almost constant at roughly 17% of GDP. In other words, even though the actual tax rates themselves rise and fall, the government’s ‘slice’ of the economic pie is almost always the same – 17%.

I’ve worked out a mathematical model which shows that, even with absurd assumptions (7%+ GDP growth for years at a time, low interest rates, etc.), it is simply not feasible for the US government to ‘grow’ its way out.

Default has become the only option. And that could mean a number of things.

They could default on their creditors (other governments like China who loaned money to the US government). But this would spark a global financial and banking crisis.

They could default on the Federal Reserve, which owns trillions of dollars of US debt. But this would create an epic currency crisis for the US dollar.

They could also default on their obligations to their citizens—primarily to future beneficiaries of Social Security (who collectively own trillions of dollars of US debt).

Or they could choose to default on their obligations to every human being alive who holds US dollars… and engineer rampant inflation.

While it is remotely possible that the USA will have greater growth, at this stage the idea that interest rates will not remain low is a better assumption. Hence, it is reasonable to conclude that the USA will not ever properly pay back its debt.

It will default and/or simply print up money (including electronically) to pretend to pay it down. This will lead to disaster as foreign creditors will rise up (Habakkuk 2:6-8; see also Obama signs spending bill; CNN says Congress ends year in ‘complete disarray’).

The Bible also warns:

12…Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.” (Isaiah 3:12)

16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err, And those who are led by them are destroyed (Isaiah 9:16).

15 and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant,

What the USA truly needs to national repentance (which I am not expecting at this point). Various sins and increasing debt is weakening the USA in many ways.

Without national repentance the USA is doomed. Of course, personal repentance is still possible.
