UK 1/2 surcharge payment claimed to be ‘spin’

It is claimed that the UK really is not paying half of a surcharge as apparently it also had some type of a rebate from the EU:

George Osborne’s claim to have halved the UK’s £1.7bn EU budget surcharge was “smoke and mirrors”, Labour has said.

The UK will pay two interest-free sums next year totalling £850m, instead of a larger lump sum by 1 December, after a rebate from Brussels due in 2016 appeared to have been brought forward.

The chancellor said it was “far beyond what anyone expected us to achieve”.

But Labour’s Ed Balls said he had not saved UK taxpayers “a single penny” while UKIP accused him of “spin”.

The shadow chancellor said: “By counting the rebate Britain was due anyway, they are desperately trying to claim that the backdated bill for £1.7bn has somehow been halved.

“But nobody will fall for this smoke and mirrors. The rebate was never in doubt and in fact was confirmed by the EU Budget Commissioner last month.” …

Eurosceptic Tory MEP Daniel Hannan suggested the deal achieved by the chancellor may not represent any reduction in the total amount. …

After a four-hour meeting of EU finance ministers in Brussels, Mr Osborne hailed an agreement which he said meant the UK would pay a lower sum in two interest-free instalments in July and September 2015. …

Mr Cameron said reducing the amount paid to Brussels was “good progress, and the chancellor has done well”.

But other foreign ministers questioned whether the UK’s contribution had changed.

Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem said the “mechanism of rebate will also apply on the new contribution. So it’s not as if the British have been given a discount”. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-29965113

This will apparently still be claimed as a victory by UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

But the way it is being handled will give fuel to those who want the UK to leave the EU.

The idea of Britain leaving the European Union has been called a “Brexit” or “Brixet” – British exit. Many analysts believe that if the citizens of the UK can vote about whether or not to stay in the EU, most will vote against it. The time will come when the EU and UK will be enemies and the UK will lose.
