US and EU pressuring Israel to give up land essentially for a ‘peace deal’
Both the USA and European Union are trying to pressure Israel’s government to give up land, essentially for a promise of peace (and some funding from the EU):
November 6, 2013
BETHLEHEM — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says good faith and serious effort are required from both Israelis and Palestinians to make the “real compromises and hard decisions” needed to bring about a two-state solution to their decades-long crisis.
Kerry met separately Wednesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Three months into what is scheduled to be nine months of peace talks, Kerry said he is confident the sides have the ability to make progress…
Palestinian negotiators say that besides the issue of Israeli settlements, talks have stalled over Israeli positions, including water rights and what land is to be exchanged in a two-state solution that is to be decided beyond Israel’s pre-1967 borders.
Kerry has made economic development in Palestinian areas a central part of this peace process and used his visit to Bethlehem to announce another $75 million in U.S. funding for Palestinian infrastructure projects.
“We need to develop the economies to show both peoples that peace has the benefits of economic opportunity and prosperity and a better quality of life,” he said. http://www.voanews.com/content/concerned-netanyahu-hopes-kerry-can-steer-talks-toward-peace/1784520.html
Over the past four years, ties between the European Union and Israel have grown increasingly fractious, with Brussels seldom missing an opportunity to lambaste Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for building settlements on occupied Palestinian land and restricting access to large portions of the West Bank.
In a series of statements since June 2009, soon after Netanyahu came to power and settlement expansion began, EU foreign ministers have steadily sharpened their tone, leading to the publication in July this year of strict new rules on how EU funds can be distributed to Israeli organisations.
The funding guidelines, which effectively ban EU money being allotted to Israeli research institutes and other entities that have operations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, are a source of great aggravation to Israel.
From Europe’s point of view, they merely put down on paper what has been a long-held position: that the occupation of Palestinian land is illegal under international law and EU governments don’t want to finance activities there…
Toaldo agrees that the EU’s approach is having an impact, whether intentional or not, for example in helping to shunt the Israelis and Palestinians back to talks. But he also warns against seeing such an attitude as a workable policy. http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/11/06/uk-eu-israel-relations-idUKBRE9A50M320131106
I have reported about the European research funding pressure on Israel in the past (see EU to put more pressure on Israel: A prelude to Daniel 9:27?).
The Israelis do not want to give up the territory that the Palestinians want them to. When I was in Israel a couple of weeks ago, my guide repeatedly pointed out land that would be affected by the pre-1967 border proposals and attempted to convince me that for many reasons this was not possible. I repeatedly told him that the Palestinians, Europeans, and Americans really did not care and would push for it any way. Today’s news continues to confirm my beliefs here.
Some type of ‘deal’ will happen.
In the book of Daniel there is a prophecy related to the end times that states:
26…And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate (Daniel 9:26b-27).
The deal is confirmed for one prophetic week, seven years. The covenant/deal that is confirmed is an important one for end time prophecy watchers as it sets off a series of events that lead to the start of the Great Tribulation 3 1/2 years (the middle of the week per Daniel 9:27) after it is confirmed by a particular leader. This particular leader is also discussed in Daniel 8 and Daniel 11, as well as Revelation 13.
This portion of scripture in Daniel seems to be discussing some type of peace deal that the Europeans will either propose or at least one from Europe will endorse.
The idea of this being a seven-year end-time deal was also understood by the Catholic theologian Hippolytus (died 235) in the third century:
…the iron and the clay shall be mingled together. Now Daniel will set forth this subject to us. For he says, “And one week will make a covenant with many, and it shall be that in the midst (half) of the week my sacrifice and oblation shall cease.” By one week, therefore, he meant the last week which is to be at the end of the whole world of which week the two prophets… will take up the half. For they will preach 1,260 days clothed in sackcloth, proclaiming repentance to the people and to all the nations…(Hippolytus. On Christ and Antichrist, Chapter 43. Online edition Copyright © 2008 by Kevin Knight).
While the leader in Daniel 9:27 is only referred to as a prince when he confirms the one week covenant, he probably will not be known as the “King” until shortly before he breaks the covenant at the mid-week point–which is also related to what happens in Daniel 11:31:
31 And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation. (Daniel 11:31)
The ‘prince’ in Daniel 9:26, the ‘he’ of Daniel 9:27, and the ‘him’ of Daniel 11:31 are the same person–the one who ends up being final King of the North and Beast of the sea (Revelation 13:1-4).
Although he has several events out of sequence, even the famed Protestant theologian John Walvoord understood the importance of the deal in Daniel 9:27:
The seven-year peace treaty with Israel; consummated seven years before the second coming of Christ (Dan. 9:27; Revelation 19:11-16). (Walvoord J. The Prophecy Knowledge Handbook. Victor Books, 1990, p. 551)
Why is this believed to be a peace deal? There are several reasons, but notice some other scriptures that discuss this leader:
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand. (Daniel 8:25, KJV).
23 And after the league is made with him he shall act deceitfully, for he shall come up and become strong with a small number of people. 24 He shall enter peaceably, even into the richest places of the province; and he shall do what his fathers have not done, nor his forefathers: he shall disperse among them the plunder, spoil, and riches; and he shall devise his plans against the strongholds, but only for a time. (Daniel 11:23-24, NKJV)
So this leader gives people the impression that there will be “peace” and is involved in some type of deal. Term is translated as “peace” in Daniel 8:25 is from the Hebrew term shalvah and essentially means security. In other words, this leader will destroy “many” who are under the impression that they are secure because of some type of security arrangement. Such arrangements are now commonly referred to as peace deals. But as the prophesied one has not been confirmed, at least not publicly, the Great Tribulation would seem to be at least 3 1/2 years away (you may also wish to watch a YouTube video titled Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2013?).
The Palestinians do not want the Israelis to build more settlements and the Israelis do not like what the Palestinians and others are proposing yet for a “peace deal.”
The type of deal that Daniel wrote about will come will likely happen when both sides feel that they have no choice but to enter in a major deal, which will also be a deal involving the Europeans (watch also Can You Prove that the Beast to Come is European?).
A deal that Bible prophecy teaches that the Europeans will confirm then break (Daniel 9:27; 11:31; Matthew 24:15) and that Israel will come to regret.
Watch (Mark 13:37).
