US judge accused Argentina of ‘half-truths,’ but USA has more serious ones of its own

At US judge has accused the government of Argentina for using half-truths related to its financial problems:

U.S. District Judge Thomas Griesa, in a stern tone, on Friday criticized Argentina’s decision to default on $29 billion in debt earlier in the week rather than pay holdout investors as ordered.

In a court hearing, Griesa told lawyers for Cleary Gottlieb, which represents Argentina, to “take steps to stop the misleading information being released by the Republic” regarding the battle between investors and the country. Elected officials in the South American nation have repeatedly stated that they had met their debt obligations, which Griesa said was a “half truth.”

“The republic has issued public statements that have been highly misleading, and that has to be stopped,” he said.

Griesa had ordered the nation to pay $1.33 billion plus interest to NML Capital, a unit of Elliott Management Corp, and Aurelius Capital Management, the two leading U.S. hedge funds who were not among those who agreed to accept new bonds after the nation defaulted in 2002.

Argentina argues that by depositing $539 million for a scheduled June 30 coupon payment at the Central Bank of Argentina in the account of Bank of New York Mellon, the trustee, that it had satisfied its obligation to pay its debts. Griesa had ordered BNY Mellon not to transfer that money to bondholders that exchanged debt in 2005 and 2010.

“Half-truths are not the same as the truth,” he said in court on Friday.

Argentina does have problems, but some believe they are fixable:

ARGENTINA’S first bond, issued in 1824, was supposed to have a lifespan of 46 years. Less than four years later, the government defaulted. Resolving the ensuing stand-off with creditors took 29 years. Since then seven more defaults have followed, the most recent this week, when Argentina failed to make a payment on bonds issued as partial compensation to victims of the previous default, in 2001.

Most investors think they can see a pattern in all this, but Argentina’s president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, insists the latest default is not like the others. Her government, she points out, had transferred the full $539m it owed to the banks that administer the bonds. It is America’s courts (the bonds were issued under American law) that blocked the payment, at the behest of the tiny minority of owners of bonds from 2001 who did not accept the restructuring Argentina offered them in 2005 and again in 2010. These “hold-outs”, balking at the 65% haircut the restructuring entailed, not only persuaded a judge that they should be paid in full but also got him to freeze payments on the restructured bonds until Argentina coughs up.

Ms Fernández is right that the consequences of America’s court rulings have been perverse, unleashing a big financial dispute in an attempt to solve a relatively small one. But hers is not the first government to be hit with an awkward verdict. Instead of railing against it, she should have tried to minimise the harm it did. Defaulting has helped no one: none of the bondholders will now be paid, Argentina looks like a pariah again, and its economy will remain starved of loans and investment.

Happily, much of the damage can still be undone. It is not too late to strike a deal with the hold-outs or back an ostensibly private effort to buy out their claims. A quick fix would make it easier for Argentina to borrow again internationally. Yet, as far as financial ‘half-truths’ go, it should be mentioned the USA is in worse shape.

Starting in 1965 the USA started a program of currency debasement by removing silver from its then silver coins and replacing it with cheaper metals. That has been done in the past, by places such as the declining Roman Empire.

The Bible warns against cheapening the money supply:

4 Take away the dross from silver (Proverbs 25:4a).

25 I will turn My hand against you, And thoroughly purge away your dross, And take away all your alloy. (Isaiah 1:25)

22 Your silver has become dross, Your wine mixed with water. (Isaiah 1:22)

Dross is a cheaper metal that is normally placed inside a covering of a precious metal like silver. Governments began to do this thousands of years ago when they had financial problems. Putting dross into silver cheapens currency, just like putting water into wine dilutes the wine’s value. In modern times, government spending in excess of revenues and the 21st century quantitative easing programs (in the USA with names such as QE1, QE2, and QE3, from the Federal Reserve) are a way to dilute the value of currencies. This is not the biblical solution to US economic problems. It is worse than what has been happening with Argentina lately.

Because of its control and influence over the international banking system the USA has so far seemingly got away with it–but Bible prophecy shows that this will end.

Argentina has defaulted in the past, and gotten through it. When the USA ‘defaults’ in the prophesied way, it will be all over for the USA.

No one is planning on military invasion of Argentina for its actions, but notice a biblical prophecy related to being in debt:

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man… 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you. Because of men’s blood And the violence of the land and the city, And of all who dwell in it. (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8).

The USA is the most indebted nation of all time and the UK is one of the most indebted on a per capita basis. The above prophecy DOES apply to the USA in the 21st century. Unlike Argentina, the USA will be taken over as Habakkuk 2, Daniel 11:39, and other prophecies teach.

Ultimately, the US dollar will have no monetary value (it may have some minor value as a fuel source, novelty, or something else). The fact that the USA continues to use its ‘half-truths’ to inflate the money supply (combined with other events that will happen, a so-called ‘perfect storm’ ) is setting the stage for a time the USA dollar will be worthless.

Although some realize that the USA is a superpower in decline, most do not really understand how bad it will get.

Without national repentance the USA is doomed. Since the USA seems to be going more into sin nationally, that type of national repentance seems unlikely. Yet, personal repentance is still possible. Do you see the winds of change in the USA and elsewhere that even some financial people now see?
