WASHINGTON (AP) — The government is poised Thursday to deliver a double-dose of sobering news — on the devastation the coronavirus caused the U.S. economy last quarter and the damage it continues to inflict on the job market.
The pandemic is believed to have caused the economy to shrink during the April-June period at an annual rate exceeding 30%. That would easily shatter the existing record for a quarterly contraction, a 10% drop in 1958.
The virus forced millions of employers to slash jobs as consumers stopped shopping and traveling, and hotels, restaurants and small businesses closed their doors. Most analysts expect the economy to manage a sharp bounce-back in the current July-September quarter. More than 11 million people in Latin America are “marching towards the brink of starvation” due to economic conditions exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, the U.N.’s food agency chief David Beasley has warned.”The COVID-19 pandemic has just been devastating in Latin America, where the economic storm clouds were already gathering,” Beasley said in a statement put out by the World Food Program (WFP) on Wednesday following his trip to Ecuador and Panama. “Families are struggling to buy basics like food and medicine, as livelihoods are destroyed and the number of people out of work in the region hits 44 million.””We have seen a substantial increase in over 11 million people that are marching towards the brink of starvation,” he said in a video taken in Ecuador during his trip. …Latin America and the Caribbean are expected to have a 269% rise in the number of people with “severe food insecurity” in the coming months, according to an analysis presented this week by the WFP. As regular reader of this COGwriter Church of God News page are aware, I have long believed that the impacts of government policies in the US and elsewhere related to COVID-19 would be more serious than many have claimed. Jesus predicted troubles and famines (Matthew 24:4-8; Mark 13:8). Famine/food inflation is associated with the ride of the third of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
The economic “solution” that the US federal government is looking for, and state and local governments seem to be hoping for, is that the US will increase its debt. But there is a divide as to how much more debt at this time:

The US is risking its financial status in the world by increasing its debt. That will not end well:
2 Then the Lord answered me and said:
“Write the vision
And make it plain on tablets,
That he may run who reads it.
3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.
Though it tarries, wait for it;
Because it will surely come,
It will not tarry.4 “Behold the proud,
His soul is not upright in him;
But the just shall live by his faith. (Habakkuk 2:2-4)6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him,
And a taunting riddle against him, and say,
‘Woe to him who increases
What is not his — how long?
And to him who loads himself with many pledges’?
7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly?
Will they not awaken who oppress you?
And you will become their booty.
8 Because you have plundered many nations,
All the remnant of the people shall plunder you,
Because of men’s blood
And the violence of the land and the city,
And of all who dwell in it. (Habakkuk 2:6-8).
The above is a prophecy for the appointed time of the end–essentially the time of the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21).
The late WCG Pastor General, Herbert W. Armstrong said the following in a sermon on July 7, 1984:
And I can see now, the event that is going to trigger the formation of the reunification in Europe; the resurrection of the medieval Holy Roman Empire that we’ve been looking forward to that is prophesied to come …
But I believe that some event is going to happen suddenly just like out a blue sky that is going to shock the whole world and is going to cause the nations in Europe to realize they must unite! … Well now I think I can see what may be the very event that is going to trigger … that is the economic situation in the world …
Now we had to have an economic system as specialization progressed. And to handle money and the transfer of money from one person to another a banking system was originated. Now today you’ve been born into a world where you take banks for granted. There’ve been banks for now hundreds and hundreds and even I guess thousands, thousands of years perhaps. But banks have to deal with one another and as transportation has increased and some people live in different parts of the nation or the world they transfer money …
The whole banking structure in the United States is a network all joined together, but not only that, one nation has to deal with other nations in imports and exports. And so they have to have a means of transferring money from one nation to another. And so the banking structure is international and interwoven. Things started out with the first man Adam rather simply. God’s things are usually simple. Man wants to make everything complex, intricate, and in such detail that the human mind can hardly keep up with it. And so the banking system has become very complex. And one nation is pretty much tied to other nations in its banking or monetary system. …
Now when the financial structure breaks down, all civilization is going to break down.
I just wanted to say that much maybe you can begin to see how serious this thing can become!
So, an economic or banking crisis is what Herbert W. Armstrong concluded would drive Europe to unite. While Germany’s drop was only 1/3 of that of the US, it was affected. But, much less than the US, so far.
While the debt and banking issues are not the only factors to push a united European Beast, items like Brexit, disdain for Donald Trump, COVID, and US trade issues may help push Europe into an economic crisis.
Regular readers realize that I have often written about US debt and quoted many of the same scriptures.
Why remind people of this so often?
There are a couple of reasons, including the fact that debt is growing. And with COVID-19’s reducing economic output and governments increasing debt, this is a dangerous combination.
COVID-19 should be proof that the world as we know it will not continue (watch also our latest video COVID 19 is NOT the End, but could it be TEOTWAKI?):
3 … knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. (2 Peter 3:3-7)
The massive increase in debt is UNSUSTAINABLE. That means that things CANNOT CONTINUE as they have been. Biblical prophecies are coming to pass.
Do not live your life like the current world order will continue as it has. Bible prophecy says that it will not. Increasing levels of debt show that a debt bubble will one day burst and the USA (as well as its Anglo-Saxon descended allies will one day be no more). Famines will NOT be limited to places like Africa and Latin America. The time will come when places like the US will be hit and, while it may try more debt to deal with it, the time is coming when that will not work for the US either. The food shortages in parts of Latin America may well be a factor in driving the Latin nations to Europe, and away from the US.
Those who do not believe that the economy of the US can fail are ignoring reality.
The economy of the US is, at best, built on a foundation of sand, as debt it certainly not a rock to build upon.
Jesus taught:
24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:24-27)
34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:34-36)
Are you watching, praying, and living your life to be accounted worthy? The Great Tribulation is coming.
“Great” will be the fall of the US.
Prophecies, such as Habakkuk 2, are pointing to the coming fall of the US!
Biblical prophecies will be fulfilled.
The present world order with the US on top will NOT continue.
But the good news is that ultimately, Jesus will return and establish the Kingdom of God.
