USA believes Chinese hackers compromised data on millions of government employees
A USA government employee database has been compromised and the USA points to Chinese hackers:

U.S. officials said hackers in China launched a massive cyberattack on the federal agency responsible for collecting background information on, and issuing security clearances for millions of government employees.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) said Thursday as many as 4 million current and former federal employees may have been affected. It said that number could go higher as the investigation continues.
Law enforcement officials said they believe China-based hackers, possibly with links to the Chinese government, were behind the attack, believed to be the most extensive breach of federal employee data in years.
Accusations called ‘irresponsible’
China said Friday that any allegations it was involved in breaking into U.S. government computers are irresponsible.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular news briefing that Beijing hopes the U.S. would be “less suspicious and stop making any unverified allegations, but show more trust and participate more in cooperation.”
“We know that hacker attacks are conducted anonymously, across nations, and that it is hard to track the source,” Hong said. “It’s irresponsible and unscientific to make conjectural, trumped-up allegations without deep investigation.”
China’s military is believed to have made cyber warfare capabilities a priority more than a decade ago. One of the few public announcements of the capabilities came in a May 25, 2011, news conference by Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng, in which he spoke of developing China’s “online” army.
Zhu Haiquan, a Chinese embassy spokesman in Washington, said China outlaws cyber warfare, saying “jumping to conclusions and making hypothetical accusations is not responsible and counterproductive.”
Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said this attack is most shocking “because Americans may expect that federal computer networks are maintained with state of the art defenses.” http://www.voanews.com/content/suspected-chinese-hackers-stole-data-on-millions-of-us-federal-workers/2808586.html
The more data governments collect, legitimately or otherwise, the greater risk that some of it will be compromised.
Now as far as the Chinese go, this is not the first time that the USA has made cyber accusations against China. Last year, the USA actually filed criminal charges against certain Chinese officials for cyber activities (USA charging Chinese military officials for economic espionage cyber crimes).
Of course, the USA has been highly engaged in cyber warfare. Notice a story from 2013 from the Washington Post as well as a story posted yesterday from Time:

The Justice Department was looking for evidence of computer hacking schemes
The Obama administration expanded warrantless surveillance of Americans’ Internet searches, according to new National Security Agency documents released by Edward Snowden.
According to ProPublica, which obtained documents from Snowden, in 2012 the Justice Department authorized the NSA to search Internet cables on American soil without a warrant for evidence of computer hacking schemes originating abroad. http://time.com/3909293/edward-snowden-obama-nsa-spying/
So, the USA basically violated its Constitution to conduct more warrantless surveillance of Americans’ Internet searches related to hackers.
Of course, since the USA has a ‘Cyber Command’ and has long been engaged in cyber warfare, it should come as no surprise that others are involved in such activities.
I have long believed that cyber spying is being allowed to increase by many governments and that this is dangerous. Governments are looking at ways not only to spy but to have more control over internet content.

Former CIA officer and NSA contractor Ed Snowden has taken a surprising swing at his new home, accusing Russia of ‘arbitrarily passing’ new anti-privacy laws.
Snowden fled to Russia after exposing the scale of NSA snooping two years ago, receiving first asylum, then a three-year residency permit, from President Vladimir Putin.
However, Russia has been busy cracking down on internet and media freedoms in general since Snowden’s arrival, banning majority foreign ownership for mass media, and drafting new laws to make sure that restrictions on promoting ‘extremism’ also apply to bloggers as well as news sites and publications. Like many other countries, Russia’s also bringing a new law to force companies to store personal data on its own citizens locally. That law is due to come into force in September.
Snowden’s op-ed comes in a week that has seen key provisions of the Patriot Act, which form the legal foundation for much of the NSA’s monitoring of suspected terrorist activity, lapse after a filibuster by Kentucky Senator Rand Paul stopped them being extended. http://time.com/3910434/edward-snowden-russia/

WASHINGTON—
The recent threats by Russian authorities to block access to popular U.S.-based websites such as Google come amid a larger and growing effort by the Kremlin to wall off sections of the Internet from Russians.
What’s more troubling: there’s new research that suggests the Russian public may be ambivalent.
Last week, the Kremlin’s Internet and media regulator Roskomnadzor sent letters to the U.S.-based web services Twitter, Facebook and Google, requesting large amounts of private information on Russian’s who use their services. Additionally, Roskomnadzor authorities asked that various pages deemed illegal for advocating “unsanctioned protests” in Russia be permanently taken down.

The U.S. Congress has approved sweeping changes to surveillance laws enacted after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, eliminating the bulk collection of phone records by the government which shocked the world when revealed two years ago by exiled ex-CIA contractor Edward Snowden.
Two days after Congress let the phone-records authority and other antiterror programs expire, the Senate in a 67-32 vote sent the legislation to President Barack Obama, who signed it within hours.
The legislation revives most of the expired programs, but with more limited spying powers for the National Security Agency.
Obama praised the bill, saying “It protects civil liberties and our national security.”

I call it a pretense, because it does not restore privacy rights, but instead simply adds one layer for the government to go through to get all the information it wants. And I also believe that the time will come when the government of the USA will take steps to stop aspects of the message of the gospel of the kingdom on the internet.
While most are not particularly concerned about government monitoring etc, the Bible talks about the fact that God will finish the work and cut it short (Roman 9:28). Notice also the following which could be related to that:
11 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God,
“That I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread,
Nor a thirst for water,
But of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 They shall wander from sea to sea,
And from north to east;
They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord,
But shall not find it. (Amos 8:11-12)
Perhaps under the guise of “neutrality,” perhaps under the guise of the revised “Patriot Act,” perhaps under the guise of “public welfare,” perhaps because of alleged “intolerance,” calling parts of the message “hate speech” and/or national security threats/issues, something will be done to stop perhaps all of the organized media efforts to proclaim biblical truths. A famine of the word is coming (Amos 8:11-12; cf. Romans 10:14-15) as the work/word will be cut short (Romans 9:28).
Notice something that the Bible warns about:
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity,
3 Who sharpen their tongue like a sword,
And bend their bows to shoot their arrows — bitter words,
4 That they may shoot in secret at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear. (Psalms 64:2-4)
Attacking those speaking the truth is expected. In this internet age, the most logical way to prevent people from finding the truth of the words of the Lord would be to prevent those with the truth from remaining on the internet. Eliminating blogs and reports that governments do not care for is a plan that many governments have.
The ‘work’ (in the Amos 8:12 sense) may be stopped by government officials (like on the internet, radio, etc.) and persecutions began because people of the holy covenant are warning the world of the results of their sins (which they will not want pointed out), pointing out falsehoods in other religions, and teaching that the King of the North is fulfilling these prophecies in Daniel 11. The faithful may be saying things that are not “politically correct” to the point that one or more governments will take action (especially if we are saying, and I expect to help do this, that a certain individual is the King of the North and that he will invade and destroy the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, etc.). Yet, God’s work still will be accomplished and the final phase of the work completed.
There will be many NOT affiliated with China who will be involved in preventing the truth from being fully told on the internet.
