Just as US initial claims spike back to 1.4m, today is the deadline for extended US unemployment benefits to end. They are going to lapse with no replacement. Until Congress can agree on something new, we are about to find out what an economy looks like when you throw tens of millions into unemployment, because you would not nationalise payrolls like in Europe, and then throw unemployment benefits out too. Reports suggest some Republicans have even been trying to sneak in backdoor cuts to social security in any stimulus bill too for good measure. This prompted left-wing commentator Matt Stoller to tweet: “Not to give strategic advice to Republicans, but it’s probably a bad electoral strategy to negotiate aggressively to ensure that the next coronavirus package includes mercenary style hunting games of the poor. To put it differently, a good Republican electoral strategy five months before an election is ‘here free money for all the voters.’” Is his view of impending electoral suicide really painless? And if so, for whom?

Of course, there is a free-market fundamentalist view that the more the government spends, the worse things get. The logical corollary is that the more you eat, the greater the risk of obesity and heart attack. Which is true. On the other hand, try eating nothing. You tend to die a lot more quickly than the other way round. We also have lots of history to lean on to back up that point. Greek austerity was a disaster; Italian austerity was a disaster; and Weimar Germany austerity under Brűning resulted in Nazism. We are talking about tens of millions of people being unemployed with virtually no income. Think of the snowball effect of that income slump: at least think of the landlords and the businesses that will suffer too. Perhaps that’s why US stocks dipped yesterday – and why the Fed immediately stepped in to widen the range of firms it can bail out. No free-market fundamentalism there, eh? …

Even though economic conditions were absolutely awful, during the month of June the mainstream media kept insisting that the U.S. economy was “recovering” and the stock market kept surging on every hint of good news. But now the “economic recovery” narrative is completely dead, because the numbers clearly show that the U.S. economy is rapidly moving in the wrong direction. Many states are rolling out new restrictions as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases continues to surge, and this is having a huge impact on economic activity. Overall, more than 52 million Americans have filed new claims for unemployment benefits over the past 18 weeks, and that makes this the biggest spike in unemployment in U.S. history by a very wide margin. …

Of course it isn’t just the employment numbers that are depressingly bad. According to Jefferies, in late June 19 percent of all U.S. small businesses were closed, but now that number has risen to 24.5 percent…

As of Sunday, 24.5% of small businesses in the United States were closed, according to Jefferies. That is worse than late June, when only 19% were closed. Jefferies pointed to “particular weakness in COVID hot spots” and noted that small business employment had dropped to levels unseen since the end of May.

Just think about that number for a minute.

Nearly a quarter of all small businesses in the entire country are closed.

The cost to the economy of the USA and the worldwide ramifications of various steps taken are massive. Is this totally the “result of the virus” or the result of cowardice, political expediency, and fear?

The forcible prevention of Americans from doing anything except what politicians deem “essential” has led to the worst economy in American history since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It is panic and hysteria, not the coronavirus, that created this catastrophe. And the consequences in much of the world will be more horrible than in America. …

The lockdown is “possibly even more catastrophic (than the virus) in its outcome: the collapse of global food-supply systems and widespread human starvation” (italics added). That was published in the left-wing The Nation, which, nevertheless, enthusiastically supports lockdowns. …

And, of course, to smug editors and writers of The Atlantic, in article after repetitive article, the fault lies not with the lockdown but with President Donald Trump. Having worked a little bit with the US NIH, specifically the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (plus my studies and experiences with statistics and modeling), let me state that I was not in awe or fear from their pronouncements based on their predictive models.

My experience with local public health officials also has not instilled in me a sense of confidence in their competence as I have seen inappropriate agendas as being pushed, as opposed to proper public health measures. Plus massive ignorance related to treatment.

Yes, as a scientist whose anti-viral proposals before the NIH utilizing herbs, glandulars, and nutrients was twice deemed by the US government scientists to have “significant scientific merit,” I have believed much has been mishandled in the COVID-19 matter.

I have opposed most business closures and church closures. The lockdown and other steps related to government actions blamed on COVID-19 is going to have severe ramifications, and some have began to show up.

We are seeing more hunger, for example, in parts of Africa because of government policies.

Government leaders around the world either like more government controls and/or are afraid not to have severe restrictions lest they look like they have not taken the coronavirus seriously enough. Many of the decisions made have been for political expediency and NOT public health.

COVID-19 has wounded the economies of most nations around the world. It has helped to take “peace from the earth” as prophesied related to the second of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (for how COVID seems related to the second horseman, watch Sorrows and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse).

The USA has increased debt because of COVID, and that is not good (cf. Habakkuk 2:6-8)–despite the fact that many want it to massively continue to increase debt to aid the unemployed and others.

The COVID lockdowns are also showing governments the ease that they can impose totalitarian controls. Some believe that was part of the reason behind the lockdowns in the first place.

The Bible shows that Europe will eventually reorganize and accept totalitarianism (Revelation 17:12-13; see also Must the Ten Kings of Revelation 17:12 Rule over Ten Currently Existing Nations?) and what it will end up with will not be good. The lockdowns are sort of a trial run.

But the good news is that ultimately, Jesus will return and establish the Kingdom of God.

The worldwide lockdown will go down in history as a series of wrong decisions, misinformation, economic harm, and cowardice.
