Talk of a new arms race between the United States and China has rapidly increased since a recent report by the Financial Times asserted that China had tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic weapon.
But what are hypersonic weapons? How do they work? Who has them? And why does it matter?
What are Hypersonic Weapons?
At the most basic level, hypersonic weapons are missiles that travel faster than five-times the speed of sound, or Mach 5. This speed is roughly 3,800 miles per hour, but fluctuates with the object, altitude, and temperature, as these interact with the physics of sound.
Hypersonic weapons currently come in two main varieties: hypersonic intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs).
Hypersonic ICBMs are simply ultra-fast missiles that are powered by rockets or other jets throughout their flight. They fly in ballistic trajectories, steeply arcing out of the atmosphere before returning to earth to strike their target.
HGVs are launched into low orbit by rockets in a similar manner to ballistic missiles. Upon reaching orbit, however, the HGV and its warhead detach from the rocket and fly through the atmosphere using its own momentum—meaning they are not confined to the fixed parabolic trajectory of a ballistic missile.
HGVs are generally much faster than ICBMs while they are in low orbit, but become much slower upon hitting the dense air of the atmosphere as they have no jets to power them. At the height of their speed, however, they can fly up to 20 times the speed of sound (Mach 20), or roughly 15,000 miles per hour.
Key advantages that HGVs have over hypersonic ICBMs are their speed before re-entry into the atmosphere, their ability to be maneuvered after detaching from their rocket boosters, and the fact that most all missile defense systems in current use are designed to thwart ballistic ICBMs rather than contend with non-arcing HGVs.
The primary disadvantage of HGVs is the significantly more costly research and construction processes required to build and field them.
Who Has Hypersonic Weapons?
China, North Korea, Russia, and the United States have all tested hypersonic missiles.
Additionally, Australia, India, Japan, Pakistan, and South Korea are all investing in hypersonic weapons research.
The only nations known to have working HGVs are China and Russia, whose respective DF-17 and Avangard systems entered service in 2019.
The United States is in the prototyping phase of several different HGV projects that are taking place across its service branches. Most notable among them is the Lockheed Martin Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW), which has been in development for the Air Force since 2018. Two of the three tests of the ARRW in 2021 resulted in system failures. …
What are the Implications for US National Defense?
The increasing development and use of hypersonic weapons, particularly HGVs, present several implications for the future of national defense.

If equipped with a EMP capable nuclear device this could deliver the EMP burst you have warned could happen. As far as I am aware of, the USA, have no defense against such a weapon.

Whether or not related to China, there is an EMP (ElectroMagnetic Pulse) threat that the USA and other parts of the world are facing.

So, many are reportedly working on hypersonic weapons, and some are believed to be functional now.
And yes, they could be capable of launching an EMP attack.
A natural (from the sun) or man-made (from a bomb) EMP event could potentially knock out the power grid for major parts of the USA. Notice the following:

The USA is vulnerable to electromagnetic issues, either from natural causes or man-made ones.
Yet, what could happen if the USA itself were to be hit by one or more EMP weapons in the right areas?
The results of an EMP incident would be catastrophic:
- · The U.S. power grid could be destroyed;
- · Planes would crash;
- · Water and sewerage systems would fail;
- · Banks could not access their records;
- · Transportation systems would be inoperable;
- · The internet would go down;
- · Emergency services would severely be hampered.
Both U.S. and Soviet scientists became increasingly aware of the threat in 1962. A Financial Sense review of the problem noted that 50 years ago, a nuclear test 800 miles away from Hawaii knocked out 300 of the states’ street lights, triggered alarms, and caused damages to a telephone company. Minor EMP events, and especially pulse trains, cause low levels of electrical noise or interference which can affect the operation of susceptible devices. For example, a common problem in the mid-twentieth century was interference emitted by the ignition systems of gasoline engines, which caused radio sets to crackle and TV sets to show stripes on the screen. Laws were introduced to make vehicle manufacturers fit interference suppressors.
At a high voltage level an EMP can induce a spark, for example from an electrostatic discharge when fuelling a gasoline-engined vehicle. Such sparks have been known to cause fuel-air explosions and precautions must be taken to prevent them.[12]
A large and energetic EMP can induce high currents and voltages in the victim unit, temporarily disrupting its function or even permanently damaging it.
A powerful EMP can also directly affect magnetic materials and corrupt the data stored on media such as magnetic tape and computer hard drives. Hard drives are usually shielded by heavy metal casings. Some IT asset disposition service providers and computer recyclers use a controlled EMP to wipe such magnetic media.[13]
A very large EMP event such as a lightning strike is also capable of damaging objects such as trees, buildings and aircraft directly, either through heating effects or the disruptive effects of the very large magnetic field generated by the current. An indirect effect can be electrical fires caused by heating. Most engineered structures and systems require some form of protection against lightning to be designed in.

There are various economic catastrophes including war, famine, and pestilences (Matthew 24:4-8) and troubles (Mark 13:8; Jeremiah 30:7), like debt, that will cause a massive catastrophe in the future. And a man-made downing of the electrical power grid through hacking and/or an EMP event could be one of the coming troubles as I have warned readers for many years.
An EMP incident could be a factor in the troubles that hit prior to the start of the Great Tribulation.

The USA faces a massive threat from many things that could knock-out its electrical power grid. The USA itself has been developing its own cyber-warfare and EMP technologies, which, of course, also encourages other nations to do so. Plus, the USA is likely to share that technology with Europe.
The Apostle Paul warned:
3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. A hypersonic weapon could cause SUDDEN DESTRUCTION. When it is time, the end of the USA will be faster than almost anyone has imagined. This is one of many reasons, true Christians need to “gather together” before “the decree is issued” to be subject to protection per Zephaniah 2:1-3:
1 Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together,
O undesirable nation,
2 Before the decree is issued,
Or the day passes like chaff,
Before the Lord’s fierce anger comes upon you,
Before the day of the Lord’s anger comes upon you!
3 Seek the Lord, all you meek of the earth,
Who have upheld His justice.
Seek righteousness, seek humility.
It may be that you will be hidden
In the day of the Lord’s anger. (Zephaniah 2:1-3)
Based on Jesus’ words in Revelation 3, it is clear that only the Philadelphian Christians will be the ones that have properly gathered together to be subject to that protection.
While most in the USA act like it will go on indefinitely and cannot truly be brought down, the reality is that electrical, weather, pestilence, and other events can devastate the USA. I believe a combination of ‘black swan’ events including terrorism, weather issues, debt problems, and crop failures, which are consistent with Jesus’ words in Matthew 24:4-8, etc. will hit the USA and make it vulnerable to its prophesied takeover (cf. Daniel 11:39).
According to various reports, an EMP attack could happen anytime.
In other words, do not think it will take years for enemy nations to develop this ability–many already have it. And some nations may be more than willing to share that ability with terrorists.
While it makes strategic sense for the USA to look more into this, it would take years for the USA to be able to fully protect against an EMP attack–particularly if it is a hypersonic one.
