Last month a white bison, commonly called a white buffalo was born in the United States.
I recall being asked about one when I did a radio interview over the telephone for a station in the Virgin Islands about 15 years ago.
The BBC has had a couple of articles about this particular bison. Here are some excerpts:
Sacred buffalo calf offers hope amid efforts to revive species
6 July 2024
Advocates hope the June birth of a white buffalo calf – an exceedingly rare event – will translate into new momentum for a decades-long push to revive the species in America’s Great Plains.
Many tribes consider a white bison birth to be a sacred omen that signifies change. …
The American buffalo, also known as bison, once numbered in the tens of millions before being brought to the brink of extinction in the 1800s. Now, the only wild herd in the US is limited to just 5,000 animals. …
Erin Braaten, a photographer of Native American descent from Kalispell, Montana, also witnessed the calf’s first moments of life before it disappeared into the herd.
“I thought I’d have a better chance of capturing Bigfoot than a white bison calf,” she tells BBC News.
For the last 2,000 years the people of the Lakota, Dakota and Nakoda tribes have told the story of a woman who arrived during a time of need.
A version speaks of two scouts searching for food and buffalo in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
The mysterious woman appeared and offered their tribe a bundle of sacred gifts, including a pipe carved from red rock, and instructed the people on how to live and pray.
She transformed several times before taking the form a white buffalo calf with a black nose, black eyes and black hooves. As she departed, a great number of buffalo returned to feed the people.
Dozens of other tribes have white buffalo stories, interpreting its arrival as both a blessing and a warning.
Chief Arvol Looking Horse, a spiritual leader of the Lakota Tribe, is known as the Keeper of the Sacred Bundle — the bundle and pipe left by the spirit. He likens the white calf’s return to the second coming of Christ.
Looking Horse, 70, said that before she departed, the woman told the people that she would return as a white buffalo calf “when everything is sickly and not good, and when people are with a not good mind”.
“This is spirit. It means spirit is happening,” he added.
On 26 June, more than 500 supporters formally celebrated the white calf at an event in West Yellowstone, just outside the park. Nearly a dozen tribes were represented.
Together, they heard the name bestowed upon the calf – Wakan Gli, meaning Sacred Returns or Comes Holy in the Lakota language. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cq5xjzqree2o
The white buffalo woman is considered the central prophet in the theology of many tribes including the Sioux, Cherokee, Comanche and Navajo.
Her story is often likened to that of Jesus in Christianity.
Simon Moya-Smith, an Oglala Lakota writer who was also raised on the white buffalo woman’s story, told the BBC that tradition says the arrival of a white calf is seen as both a “blessing and a warning”. 06/13/24 https://www.bbc.com/articles/ckrrlpdlzj7ofect of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, in presenting the study document at the press conference. 06/11/24 https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/257959/vatican-to-publish-new-document-on-papal-primacy
No, a white buffalo should NOT be likened to Jesus. Jesus warned about “false christs” and “great signs and wonders” which would “deceive” many (Matthew 24:24).

Members of the Lakota Sioux are celebrating, after a photographer captured rare images of a rare newborn white buffalo. While the unusual coloring of the buffalo is notable, since the massive animals typically have brown fur, this moment is especially poignant for the tribe, since its members believe that there is a prophecy associated with a white buffalo birth. … The Lakota Sioux believe that the white buffalo is a sacred being, and that spotting one is a sign of “better times,” as reported by NBC News. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/what-is-the-white-buffalo-prophecy-rare-birth-is-both-blessing-and-omen-for-humanity/ar-BB1o6NWo read 07/07/24
No, a white buffalo is not a sacred being. It should not be idolized as one.
Here is one of the legends/prophecies related to the arrival of a white buffalo:
“Nineteen generations ago the beautiful spirit we now refer to as White Buffalo Calf Woman brought the Sacred C’anupa (Sacred Pipe) to our People. She taught the People the Seven Sacred Rites and how to walk on Mother Earth in a sacred manner. Pte-san win-yan. As she left, she turned into a young beautiful white buffalo and then she walked over the hill and out of sight. This is where she received her name, White Buffalo Calf Woman. She gifted us with the Seven Sacred Rites that still sustain our People today. The person who smokes the sacred pipe achieves union with all Beings. By smoking this C’anupa, you will make direct personal contact with the Great Mystery. . . Following the Way of this Sacred C’anupa, you will walk in a sacred way upon the earth, for the Earth is your grandmother and your mother and she is sacred. . .″
— Chief Arvol Looking Horse (White Buffalo, Wikipedia, accessed 07/07/24)
No, walking in the way of the so-called “Seven Sacred Rites” is not the way for God’s people to follow. Nor are there any sacred pipes.
Here is another legend related to the white buffalo:
The legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman tells how the People had lost the ability to communicate with the Creator. The Creator sent the sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman to teach the People how to pray with the Pipe. With that Pipe, seven sacred ceremonies were given for the people to abide to ensure a future of harmony, peace, and balance. …
Legend says that long ago, two young men were out hunting when, from out of nowhere, came a beautiful maiden dressed in white buckskin. One of the hunters looked upon her and, recognizing her as a wakan, or sacred being, lowered his eyes. The second hunter approached her with lust in his eyes, desiring her for his woman. White Buffalo Calf Woman beckoned the lustful warrior to her, and as he approached, a cloud of dust arose around them, causing them to be hidden from view. When the dust settled, nothing but a pile of bones lay next to her.
As she walked toward the respectful young hunter, she explained to him that she had merely fulfilled the other man’s desire, allowing him, within that brief moment, to live a lifetime, die and decay. White Buffalo Calf Woman instructed the young man to return to the People and tell them to prepare for her arrival to teach them the way to pray. The young hunter obeyed. …
The legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman remains ever-promising in this age of spiritual enlightenment and conscious awareness. Many of us are looking for signs of peace in today’s world of confusion and war.
“With the return of the White Buffalo, it is a sign that prayers are being heard, that the sacred pipe is being honored, and that the promises of prophecy are being fulfilled. White Buffalo signals a time of abundance and plenty.” (from Sams and Carson, Medicine cards)
Though harsh as the world we live in may be, throughout recorded history, there have been spiritual leaders teaching peace, hope, and balance (synergy) amongst all life. This was taught by great teachers such as Jesus, Buddha, the Dali Lama, and Native American leaders. https://www.legendsofamerica.com/na-whitebuffalo/ accessed 07/07/24
No, the arrival of a white buffalo does not mean peace, abundance, and plenty as some legends claim.
The Apostle Paul warned:
3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5:3)
While the buffalo calf is simply an animal and those who believe it is a sign of peace and abundance have fallen for a lying wonder. Nearly all the world will do so soon according to something else that the Apostle Paul warned about:
9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thessalonians 2:12).
Although it is interesting that there is a white buffalo that has been born, it is not a sign of peace and prosperity.
That said, when Jesus returns, He will usher in a time of peace and abundance, but that is NOT related to the birth of a bison calf.
Having people looking at anything but Jesus to usher in utopia is part of Satan’s plan.
