December 22, 2018The White House is insisting anew that Congress give in to President Donald Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion for a border wall.
Democrats have offered no money for a wall in a must-pass spending bill, and the stalemate forced the government into a partial shutdown early Saturday. The Senate adjourned Saturday without reaching a deal as talks between officials continue.
Senior administration officials told reporters Saturday that Trump has been “very clear” about his expectations.

The U.S. Senate ended a short legislative session on Saturday amid the search for a solution to a partial government shutdown and adjourned until Dec. 27, with the principal sticking point continuing to be President Donald Trump’s demand for $5 billion to put toward a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. …
During a conference call Saturday with reporters, a senior administration official was asked why Democrats were not present at the meeting when Trump had repeatedly said they were responsible for the shutdown.
“It’s important that Senate Democrats come to the table and begin to negotiate with us,” the official said. “Conversations last night did occur. We hope those continue this day, tomorrow and into the future. But it is important for them to acknowledge that border security, physical barriers, need to be part of this package.”
McConnell said any agreement on a funding measure would need to be approved by the president and congressional leaders before it could come to a vote.
Democrats’ leaders
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California issued a joint statement Saturday saying, “Democrats have offered Republicans multiple proposals to keep the government open, including one that already passed the Senate unanimously, and all of which include funding for strong, sensible and effective border security — not the president’s ineffective and expensive wall.” https://www.voanews.com/a/shutdown-to-continue-as-senate-adjourns-until-thursday/4712298.html
Walls are effective in keeping people out as the nation of Israel has demonstrated in the 21st century. They, however, can also stop people from being able to leave as happened in Europe in the Cold War days of the 20th century.
Catholic bishops in Mexico have condemned the wall that Donald Trump has wanted to build:

Mexico’s Roman Catholic bishops have said that companies in their country expressing interest in working on a border wall in the United States proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, are betraying their country. …
An editorial in Desde la fe, the Mexican archdiocese’s weekly publication, was titled “Treason against the Homeland” and castigated Trump as a “fanatic.” …
“Any company intending to invest in the wall of the fanatic Trump would be immoral, but above all, its shareholders and owners should be considered traitors to the homeland,” said the bishops’ editorial.

As far as walls and open borders are concerned, notice the following photograph of Vatican City:

While one can freely walk into part of it, Swiss guards stop people from going past certain points. The Vatican also restricts any who wish to live there, whether they request asylum or not. My wife and I have walked around Vatican City and have seen its immense border walls close-up.
While the USA is much larger than Vatican City, the fact that Vatican City is walled off for its reasons should tell Catholic bishops that the USA may want walls for its own reasons.
That being said, Donald Trump has made various statements that many, including Mexican and American citizens, are offended by.
Various ones in Mexico have long considered that the USA is an enemy nation. So, perhaps it is not a surprise that Catholic bishops in Mexico would call companies treasonous if they participate in the building of the planned expanded border wall.
Many in Mexico believe that the USA improperly took lands ranging from Texas to California and points in-between. They believe that they are entitled to receive that land back. The Bible teaches that the European King of the North power will takeover the USA and divide its land for gain (Daniel 11:39)–Mexico will likely end up with at least some of its claimed lands back this century.
While in the short-run, the USA can take steps to seriously harm Mexico, it should be clear to all that the USA is seriously risking turning Mexico from an ally into an enemy.
A wall, while potentially helpful to reduce illegal immigration, will not protect the USA from what is going to come (Daniel 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses).
Decades ago, I concluded that Mexico would one-day help the Europeans against the USA. Last decade I warned also about trade (watch Trade Wars: Are COG warnings coming to pass?).
