WND: Many, including Netflix ‘Messiah’ writers, misunderstand Temple prophecies

World Net Daily (WND) editor Joseph Farah posted the following:

Welcome to the latest end-of-the-world “thriller” from Netflix, coming out Jan. 1.

It’s a miniseries called “Messiah” that even boasts a “replica of the rebuilt Temple.”

When people tune in to most Second Coming fare, they expect to see people battling over the Third Temple. Many Orthodox Jews and prophecy-minded Christians are eagerly waiting for someone to rebuild – amid controversy over the inconveniently placed Islamic shrines the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. …

But there’s one thing Jesus has planned, according to Scripture. He’s pretty clear about it. And it doesn’t look like He’ll need anyone to build a Temple for Him. Nor is he waiting for a pre-fabricated version.

It seems that the Master Builder has plans of His own for the Sanctuary and Holy City.

Consider Zechariah 6:12-15:

“And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord: Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both. … And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the Lord, and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.”

Here God speaks clearly through His prophet Zechariah, unmistakably of Jesus, as “The Branch.” We’re told specifically he “shall build the temple of the Lord.” If that’s not clear enough, he repeats it. “Even he shall build the temple of the Lord.”

Clear enough? Who gets the glory?

If there is any confusion about this “Branch” and His fondness for David, it should be settled in Jeremiah 23:5:

“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.” …

Amos 9:11:

“In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old.”

But still there’s more.

There’s even a prophecy way back in Exodus 15:17 that seems to point the way:

“Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.”

While I have many major differences in doctrinal and prophetic matters with Joseph Farah, yes, he is right that we do not need a massive ‘third’ temple built before Jesus returns (while Herod’s project is commonly called the second temple, he actually rebuilt the second temple, and thus, his project could be perhaps considered as the third.)

Now, however, Jesus is not the only one involved in the coming massive temple building. Notice more verses of the Zechariah prophecy:

12 Then speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, saying:

“Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH!
From His place He shall branch out,
And He shall build the temple of the Lord;
13 Yes, He shall build the temple of the Lord.
He shall bear the glory,
And shall sit and rule on His throne;
So He shall be a priest on His throne,
And the counsel of peace shall be between them both.”‘

14 “Now the elaborate crown shall be for a memorial in the temple of the Lord for Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen the son of Zephaniah. 15 Even those from afar shall come and build the temple of the Lord. Then you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. And this shall come to pass if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.” (Zechariah 6:12-15)

So, yes, Jesus will get the temple built, but others will be involved.

Many ‘prophecy watchers’ fail to understand that the Jews cannot make a Holy Temple as Christians are now the temple of God.

The Apostle Paul told the Christians in Corinth:

16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17, KJV)

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (1 Corinthians 6:19)

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (2 Corinthians 6:16)

Notice that the Apostle Paul supports the idea that the naos temple of God now has to do with Christians, not necessarily the Jewish peoples (except those who are Christians and have the Holy Spirit). Additionally, his wording “know ye not” indicates that this is something that they already should have known.

Despite scriptures like 1 Corinthians 3:17, some today believe that God would consider a Jewish Temple, to be built in defiance of the sacrifice of Jesus, to be holy. It is God’s people who are the Holy Temple in the church era, not a Jewish building.

Notice further that the Apostle Paul told the Christians in Ephesus about being God’s building:

19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22)

Thus, Paul’s writings regarding the naos temple have to do with Christian people and not a Jewish building.

When did the ‘Second Temple’ cease to be the Temple of God?

Consider the following scriptures:

37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.

38 Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!” (Mark 15:37-39)

11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.”  21 Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

23 Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another —  26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. (Hebrews 9:11-26)

After the execution of Jesus, the veil in the ‘Second’ Temple was miraculously torn and that building ceased to be the Temple of God as there was no longer a need for animal sacrifices. No Jewish building is the ‘Temple of God,’ although remnants of the first and second temples may exist (related to the second one, check out the article Church of God on Jerusalem’s Western Hill).

God does not need a physical temple in the church age for the remission of sins as Jesus did that once for all (Hebrews 7:26-28).

As prophesied in Daniel 9:26, the ‘second’ Jewish temple ended up being destroyed by the Romans. That occurred in 70 A.D.

A massive Jewish temple does NOT need to be built in Jerusalem before Jesus comes.

While there are end time prophecies about sacrifices (e.g. Daniel 11:31, 12:11), scripture shows that the Jews can sacrifice without another temple–all they need is an altar (Ezra 3:6), and the Jews have that (see Sanhedrin ceremonially dedicates altar with a burnt offering!).

Do NOT wait for a massive ‘third’ temple to be here before Jesus returns.

Those who do are making a major prophetic error.

Sadly, most in the end times are holding MANY prophetic errors (for some details, check out the article Do You Hold to Any of These Laodicean Prophetic Errors?).

Some items of possibly related interest may include:

Church of God on Jerusalem’s Western Hill Could this building, often referred to as the Cenacle, possibly have been the oldest actual Christian church building?
Does the ‘Cenacle’ deal have prophetic ramifications? After a 20 year negotiation, the Church of Rome has negotiated the right to have Catholic mass in the building known as the Cenacle. It is in the area where the Church of God on Jerusalem’s Western Hill once stood. This is believed to be the location of the earliest Christian church building.
