WEF on COVID impacting US & EU economies; WCG: Beyond Europe’s Present Crisis COLOSSUS IN THE MAKING

The World Economic Forum (WEF) posted the following:

There can be no economic recovery until the virus is contained, so addressing the health emergency is the top priority for policymakers, writes economist Joseph Stiglitz.

Policies to protect the most needy, provide liquidity to prevent unnecessary bankruptcies, and maintain links between workers and their firms are also essential to ensuring a quick restart when the time comes.

Although it seems like ancient history, it hasn’t been that long since economies around the world began to close down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Early in the crisis, most people anticipated a quick V-shaped recovery, on the assumption that the economy merely needed a short timeout. After two months of tender loving care and heaps of money, it would pick up where it left off.

It was an appealing idea. But now it is July, and a V-shaped recovery is probably a fantasy. The post-pandemic economy is likely to be anemic, not just in countries that have failed to manage the pandemic (namely, the United States), but even in those that have acquitted themselves well. The International Monetary Fund projects that by the end of 2021, the global economy will be barely larger than it was at the end of 2019, and that the US and European economies will still be about 4% smaller.

The current economic outlook can be viewed on two levels. Macroeconomics tells us that spending will fall, owing to households’ and firms’ weakened balance sheets, a rash of bankruptcies that will destroy organizational and informational capital, and strong precautionary behavior induced by uncertainty about the course of the pandemic and the policy responses to it. At the same time, microeconomics tells us that the virus acts like a tax on activities involving close human contact. As such, it will continue to drive large changes in consumption and production patterns, which in turn will bring about a broader structural transformation. …

Because COVID-19 looks likely to remain with us for the long term, we have time to ensure that our spending reflects our priorities. Although WEF opposes aspects of biblical morality (e.g., see World Economic Forum: Concerned about economic panic, information technology, and Brexit, while VP Biden pushes the LGBT agenda), the article is correct that there are macro and micro economic consequences associated with what has happened because of COVID-19 and government responses to it. Many jobs will not be coming back, at least for a time. Industries are being impacted. The government of the USA has massively increased debt and expects to do more of that. That will not end well for the USA (cf. Habakkuk 2:6-8).

As far as the European Union goes, the WEF forecast of downturn appears to be optimistic (and may also be for the USA). Notice the following related to the EU:

The EU economy will experience a deep recession this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, despite the swift and comprehensive policy response at both EU and national levels. Because the lifting of lockdown measures is proceeding at a more gradual pace than assumed in our Spring Forecast, the impact on economic activity in 2020 will be more significant than anticipated.

The Summer 2020 Economic Forecast projects that the euro area economy will contract by 8.7% in 2020 and grow by 6.1% in 2021. The EU economy is forecast to contract by 8.3% in 2020 and grow by 5.8% in 2021. The contraction in 2020 is, therefore, projected to be significantly greater than the 7.7% projected for the euro area and 7.4% for the EU as a whole in the Spring Forecast. Growth in 2021 will also be slightly less robust than projected in the spring.

Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President for an Economy that works for People, said: “The economic impact of the lockdown is more severe than we initially expected. We continue to navigate in stormy waters and face many risks, including another major wave of infections. If anything, this forecast is a powerful illustration of why we need a deal on our ambitious recovery package, NextGenerationEU, to help the economy. Looking forward to this year and next, we can expect a rebound but we will need to be vigilant about the differing pace of the recovery. We need to continue protecting workers and companies and coordinate our policies closely at EU level to ensure we emerge stronger and united.” https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_20_1269

Thus far, responses from the EU national governments related to the coronavirus have tended to weaken the EU and make it less united. Though there been some areas where it has stood united.

The USA and Europe are facing economic uncertainty that could result in a crisis that will lead to the prophesied reorganization and unity of Europe and rise of the Beast of Revelation as is prophesied in Revelation 17:12-13. This is somewhat consistent with something stated by the late WCG Pastor General, Herbert W. Armstrong who said in a sermon on July 7, 1984:

And I can see now the event that is going to trigger the formation of reunification in Europe; the resurrection of the Medieval Holy Roman Empire that we’ve been looking forward to that is prophesied to come. …

Well, now I think I can see what may be the very event that is going to trigger it and that is the economic situation in the world. …

Now we had to have an economic system as specialization progressed. And to handle money and the transfer of money from one person to another a banking system was originated. Now today you’ve been born into a world where you take banks for granted. There’ve been banks for now hundreds and hundreds and even I guess thousands, thousands of years perhaps. But banks have to deal with one another and as transportation has increased and some people live in different parts of the nation or the world they transfer money by checks. And you have to have a system whereby someone writes a check, for example in Philadelphia and yet he has an account in the bank here in Pasadena. That check has to get somewhere, somehow from Philadelphia where he cashes it in the store or something there to come here and the money has to come out of his account in this bank and be transferred back. And so a correspondent bank system was invented and has been going since long before I was born.

Now the largest correspondent bank in the United States through which all these checks flow and they do flow through certain major banks the way the system works. The largest one in the United States was the Continental Illinois Bank of Chicago. I’ve had relations with the President of that bank when I was a young man living in Chicago. Fact, I went to him occasionally for advice while I was a young man in the early twenties. I had known him in Des Moines, Iowa where he’d been President of the Des Moines National Bank and I’d had an account in that bank before I went to Chicago. And that’s the bank that you’ve read in the newspapers in the last, oh two or three months now, that came into a near crash. It was, when I was in Chicago, the second largest national bank in the United States — and I think the second, about the third largest bank in the United States — and it’s still perhaps third or fourth in the United States; a very large bank.

When a bank of that size collapses and people begin to lose confidence in the bank and there’s a run on the bank; everybody tries to draw their money out. The bank never has as much cash on hand as it has deposits that it owes to depositors that have deposited their money with it. And they could bankrupt a bank when they start a run on it. And so that bank is so large it would affect and if the banker’s bank and banks all over the United States have to keep money on deposit in that bank for the clearing of checks. And that would upset the whole banking system in the United States and so the government had to come to the aid of that bank.

Banking Structure

Now let me go further. The whole banking structure in the United States is a network all joined together, but not only that, one nation has to deal with other nations in imports and exports. And so they have to have a means of transferring money from one nation to another. And so the banking structure is international and interwoven. Things started out with the first man Adam rather simply. God’s things are usually simple. Man wants to make everything complex, intricate, and in such detail that the human mind can hardly keep up with it. And so the banking system has become very complex. And one nation is pretty much tied to other nations in its banking or monetary system.

Now when the financial structure breaks down, all civilization is going to break down.

I just wanted to say that much maybe you can begin to see how serious this thing can become!

So, an economic or banking crisis is what Herbert W. Armstrong believed a banking crisis would hit the US and concluded that would be a factor to drive Europe to unite.

Now, when Herbert Armstrong made his statements, US debt was about 1.5 trillion dollars. That debt is now over 17 times higher–and growing.

Europe will probably also increase its debt. But it still has limits that the government of the USA currently believes it does not.

Yet, the Bible prophesies that Europe will, for a time, dominate the world economically.

Europe has been working on this for decades. And when it was called the European Community (before it became the European Union), the old Worldwide Church of God published the following:

… the business of the European Community is not just business.

Although the EC’s field of action is largely economic, its founders’ aims were essentially political. From the start, European planners envisioned the Community as the nucleus of a future political “United States of Europe” with a centralized political authority. Economic integration would be only the start. The ultimate product would be an entirely new political entity!

Many, even in those early years, saw the Community evolving into a strong politico-economic power, a European counterweight to Soviet Russia.

And indeed, strides have been made over the years in the political arena. In June 1979, for example, voters in the EC member nations went to the polls to choose, for the first time, directly elected representatives to the enlarged and strengthened European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. This was an enormous milestone in European history.

But the old nemesis of self-centered nationalism still impedes progress. As yet, the EC’s decision-making institutions are invested with few substantial powers. Only minimal surrender of national sovereignty has taken place.

National self-interest still dictates governments’ positions in EC negotiations, notably in the area of agricultural policy. Quarrels over how the EC spends its money have even prompted some observers to suggest the possibility of a Common Market collapse!

The EC faces a series of crucial decisions in the near future. Most Europeans realize there can be no going back. Many remain hopeful that the remaining years of this century will yet witness a coherent, full-functioning United States of Europe.

And they are right!

Foretold Long Ago

Bible prophecy — as so often explained in the pages of this magazine — reveals that a powerful New Europe is on the horizon!

The Bible foretells a gigantic world-trading system to be formed in our time, possessing worldwide political power and influence. Ultimately, this prophesied New Europe will possess greater population, greater industrial and economic capacity, and greater military power than either the Soviet Union or the United States now possesses!

Nearly a quarter century ago, editor in chief Herbert W. Armstrong declared with reference to the newly created Common Market:

“It is one of the crucial developments of world history. It is bringing to life a slumbering giant. It is developing into — creating — a GIANT NEW WORLD POWER, that will be mightier than either Russia or the United States! It is swiftly, dynamically, fulfilling PROPHECY! It is resurrecting the ROMAN EMPIRE!” (Plain Truth, September 1961).

The dream of a united Europe has permeated the history of the Continent. The original Roman Empire fell in A.D. 476. But Bible prophecy revealed it was to be restored again and again over the centuries. The most recent attempt to revive the Roman Empire was by Benito Mussolini. Today we see the last resurrection of the Roman Empire springing to economic life! It will be composed of 10 nations or blocs of nations — but not necessarily the 10 now associated in the EC.

The final political union in Europe will not come about through slow, evolutionary means, but suddenly — in reaction to dire external threats to the Continent’s very existence! The “founding father” of the Common Market, Jean Monnet, foresaw this when he remarked that “necessity is the real federator.” The years just ahead will provide the specific events that will t rigger the final, sudden, desperate fusion of Europe.

Moreover, prophecy reveals that religion will have its part to play in inspiring enthusiasm for European unity. The Roman Catholic Church, locked in a struggle with Soviet atheism and U.S. secular consumerism, will reassume its historic role as a “glue” for Europe, cementing together the diverse peoples and cultures of the Continent.

New Superpower

The stage is set.

Europe stands on the threshold of unparalleled world power. By virtue of its economic dynamism, political muscle and continuing need for Middle Eastern oil, the coming United Europe will be in a position to reshape the geopolitical balance of the world! The stage is being set for Europe. It is working on having more unity and more international economic reach.

But it will have economic distress before it unites to fulfill its prophesied economic dominance on the world. Notice some of what is shown in places such as Revelation 18 discussing some of the reach of the end time European Babylon:

3 … all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury. (Revelation 18:3)

9 The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her … 19 in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! (Revelation 18:9,19)

Europe does not have to be perfect to do this. But perceived, for a time, as the best economic option for the world.

Although it does not look like that now to most people, Europe is prophesied to do so.
