WP: The Missing Issue in the US Presidential Election

The Washington Post had an interesting headline:

What is missing is any serious discussion of the one question that overrides all others: Can Washington govern?

The symbol of the breakdown is the ongoing stalemate over the economy and the country’s fiscal problems. The next showdown could come during a lame-duck session after the November election, when the George W. Bush tax cuts are due to expire and the big across-the-board spending cuts — agreed to last year after multiple breakdowns in negotiations — are scheduled to take effect.

Or that showdown could be delayed by a series of maneuvers designed, once again, to buy time and save face. Another game of chicken over the debt ceiling probably won’t take place until sometime early next year, but House Speaker John A. Dan Balz is politely saying that American democracy is not really working and he has concerns that it will not really work after the election in November. And he is right. The debt crisis, for one example, is not being solved.

Those of us who live in California have had similar governance problems for quite a few years. And what is different about California is that the same political party controls all the branches of government here, but still has major budget and other problems (e.g. headline from the Los Angeles Times California’s deficit may climb, legislative analyst says‎; and this from today’s Sacramento Bee Dan Walters: California has reason to worry about its business climate).

But the problems in the USA are bigger than simply the faults of its democratic/republican form of governance. Its real problems are moral and spiritual.

And the consequences are worse than the politicians are willing to admit.

Back in the Book of Daniel, the following is record related to the “handwriting on the wall”:

24 Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

25 “And this is the inscription that was written:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 This is the interpretation of each word. Mene: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 27 Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 Peres: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.” 29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. Notice what LCG Evangelist Dr. D. Winnail has written :

Handwriting on the Wall! On July 4, the United States, currently the most powerful nation in the world, celebrated 234 years of independence. The following day, on Monday, July 5, British-born Harvard professor and economic historian Niall Ferguson opened the 2010 Aspen Ideas Festival with a stark warning that the American “empire” could suddenly collapse—possibly within the next two years—due to the country’s rising debt! The U.S. and the British-descended peoples have enjoyed living off the resources of the world, but the prophet Habakkuk warns: “… Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the people shall plunder you” (Habakkuk 2:7–8). (Winnail D. Hebrew prophets also warned repeatedly that the future demise of God’s chosen Israelite peoples would come “suddenly” and unexpectedly (Isaiah 9:14–15; 29:5; 30:13; Jeremiah 6:26; 15:8). Modern financial analysts realize this could happen if the nations lending to America decide to dump the dollar and call their loans. The prophet Habakkuk’s warning to the ancient Babylonians, “Will not your creditors rise up suddenly?” (Habakkuk 2:7)—may also ring true for debt-plagued nations like America and its Israelite cousins. Prophetic scripture contains a sobering message: debt and disobedience lead to the demise of nations! (Winnail, D. Debt, Disobedience and Demise of Nations. Tomorrows’ World, Volume 12, Issue 2. It is the the United States and its Anglo-allies that have loaded pledges of debt in these end times that they really do not expect to pay back. In that respect they have recently plundered many nations. Creditors rising “up suddenly” to “plunder” as discussed in Habakkuk 2 means the end of the USA. Politicians are talking, but not solving the moral problems that have led to this debt, thus seem incapable of actually solving America’s various crises.

The USA is the largest debtor nation in the history of the world and seems determined to fulfill the prophecies related to the end time debtor. It cannot borrow like it has indefinitely–though its political gridlock leads many to believe that it must.

Ignoring the moral causes of debt, while relying on a democratic/republican system that is essentially in gridlock, is a major issue. National repentance is the only hope for the USA and its Anglo-allies, but none of the leading candidates for the presidency of the USA will promote that.

While national repentance is not likely at this stage, personal repentance is. And that is good news, and a part of the gospel. And as far as additional good news, Jesus will eventually return, establish His Kingdom, and solve more issues that the politicians possibly could.
