The European Union, too, is clearly on the decline. Despite Pollyannish talk of creating a European army and closer ties among member states, the EU has lost much of its original appeal and faces fissiparous challenges of which the so-called Brexit is one early example. I believe that the only way for the EU to survive, let alone prosper, is to recast itself as a club of nation-states rather than a substitute for them.
Less than a decade ago, the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas and the German Pope Benedict XVI claimed that the nation-state was dead and that in Europe at least, the way to salvation was a revival of Christianity as a cultural bond if not as a traditional faith.

The GI article is correct, if it is saying that Europe will change.
However, the ultimate change will be a loss of the nation state as well as the addition of more religion in Europe. Plus, and just partially because of the influence of Donald Trump, Europe will end up with its own “great army” (Daniel 11:25).

A year ago, when the European Union was rolling out its Permanent Structured Cooperation (Pesco), some commentators cautioned that we were witnessing the birth pangs of an EU military structure, an essential ingredient in the creation of a European super-state.
At the time such warnings were waved off as hyperbole or ‘conspiracy theory’. Today, EU leaders – including President Nicos Anastasiades – are freely speaking of an ‘EU army’. And meanwhile Cyprus’ own involvement in Pesco is picking up steam. …
others, have long been warning of the danger of nations effectively sub-contracting their militaries out to the EU, thus ceding their sovereignty. After all, they argue, how can a state be truly sovereign without full control over its military?
The counter-argument is that such fears are exaggerated, and that the EU’s scope will be restricted to police actions and humanitarian missions.

Are concerns over loss of sovereignty misguided? During a speech before the plenary session of the European parliament, on December 11 in Strasbourg, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini laid it all out.
She stated: “I think we agree no single European country can respond effectively to any of the challenges of our times, and I think we agree that we, the European Union, have a responsibility to embrace our role as a global power, working together for peace, security and human development worldwide and, in some cases, even filling a gap.
“None of our member states is big enough in the world of today to pursue their own national interests all alone.”
Mogherini went on to say: “When we join forces, as Europeans, and take part in global negotiations we are not giving up on our sovereignty. On the contrary, we are exerting our sovereignty more fully, more powerfully, on the global stage.

Back in 2013, Angela Merkel said that nations needed to give up sovereignty to Europe:
She said members should be willing to give up some national sovereignty and accept that “Europe has the last word in some areas”.

Last month, she basically repeated that:

A loss of sovereignty is consistent with the following prophecy of European reorganization:
12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Revelation 17:12-13)
Europe will reorganize and there will be a loss of national sovereignty. Those who have wrongly insisted that the above is teaching that it will be just ten (or eleven) currently existing nations as part of the final European beast power are in error. In 1965, the late Herbert W. Armstrong wrote:
…European countries urgently want political union, the very UNITED STATES OF EUROPE I have been assuring PLAIN TRUTH readers for 31 years is definitely coming. It will unite them into a giant third World Power…
There is a definite German “Kultur! There is a French culture that is in many respects quite different. Then there is a still different Italian culture, a Spanish culture, a Scandinavian culture, a Swiss culture–and all are different! European nations speak different languages, have different aspirations, different customs, different traditions. Europe is often called a “crazy-quilt” of nations.
HOW, THEN, CAN THEY AGREE TOGETHER AND UNITE? For years The PLAIN TRUTH has said these nations are going to have to realize their inability to unite themselves politically-to choose a common political-military Leader that all can trust. They are going to finally face the fact they must look to a Supreme Authority they can all trust! That Supreme Authority cannot be a politician, or a general (De Gaulle is both). So, he felt that while they needed a political-military leader, he also felt some type of religious leader was needed to unify Europeans.
The idea that religion will be part of the final Beast power is clearly taught in Revelation 13, as well as Revelation 17.
GI and others who are not relying on the Bible are overlooking important points.
That being said, Europe will have issues.
The Bible shows that the final European Beast power will not be naturally-united:
41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. (Daniel 2:41-43)
Europe will reorganize and unite for a time.

German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel has called for the number of EU Commissioners to be cut and for Brussels to reconsider how it allocates its budget, just over a week after Britons voted to leave the bloc.
“A Europe in which 27 Commissioners want to prove themselves doesn’t make sense,” he said in an interview with the newspaper Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung, published on Saturday. “It would be good to downsize in this respect.” …
He also said the EU should build up a joint European army.

Well, the UK did vote to leave the EU, PESCO formed, and many in the UK (and in the USA) keep pushing for nation-states.

It’s not the EU that must reinvent itself, – we must reorganize Europe. Actually, the question is whether it’s even possible to reinvent the EU from within. If it were, the EU certainly could and should have done so over the past years.
This crisis is just one of many: the refugee crisis, the Grexit crisis etc. We’ve seen for quite some time that the EU as a system is no longer able to cope with these crises, so the question isn’t whether there’s anything the EU can do but whether we are really prepared to fundamentally rethink the political and democratic reorganization of this continent. PESCO and a Great European Army
In November 2018, French President Macron called for a “true European army” because of China, Russia, and the USA. Some others in Europe have echoed that sentiment. On November 9, 2018, US President Donald Trump called that an insult, but the next day said that the USA wanted “a very strong Europe.” Emmanuel Macron referred to Donald Trump as “my friend” and indicated a desire to strengthen Europe’s military spending. In December 2017, 25 European nations agreed to be part of a military alliance called PESCO. Europe also has NATO and IEI. Will Europe end up with “a great army”? Has Donald Trump’s announcement to withdraw from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty gotten some to say that Europe must rebel against the USA? Is the idea of a United States of Europe and a European army a “paranoid fantasy” or a biblical reality? Will the USA regret Europe becoming a stronger military power? Will the USA be betrayed by “friends” such as its continental European allies? Does the Bible teach any or all of this? GI is correct that there are problems in Europe.
I, too, expect more problems in Europe.
However, the Bible shows that Europe will reorganize in a way to mainly eliminate the ‘nation state’ (Revelation 17:12-13). And the Bible shows that the Babylonian European Beast power will dominate the world scene for a time (Revelation 13,17,18) just before Jesus returns.
Expect more calls for Europe to reorganize.
