Israeli PM compares Donald Trump to Cyrus, Jerusalem Post says not yet
(Photos: Mikdash Educational Center)
Various ones in the Jewish and Protestant communities have stated or at least wondered if US President Donald Trump is a 21st century version of ancient Cyrus the Great.
Here is something from the Jerusalem Post as well as quotes from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:
Trump Isn’t Cyrus, Yet
27 March 2019
Following President Trump’s proclamation recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights on Monday, Prime Minister Netanyahu compared the American leader to Cyrus the Great. While Trump’s words and actions deserve our appreciation, comparisons to Cyrus are premature.
During the signing ceremony at the White House, Prime Minister Netanyahu established the historical significance of the Golan decision. “In the long sweep of Jewish history,” declared the Prime Minister, “there have been a handful of proclamations by non-Jewish leaders on behalf of our people and our land: Cyrus the Great, the great Persian king; Lord Balfour; President Harry S. Truman; and President Donald J. Trump.” …
Cyrus was the Persian king who defeated the Babylonians after their destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. According to the Bible, one of his first acts was to reverse the damage caused by the Babylonians:
In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, when the word of Hashem spoken by Yirmiyahu was fulfilled, Hashem roused the spirit of King Cyrus of Persia to issue a proclamation throughout his realm by word of mouth and in writing as follows: “Thus said King Cyrus of Persia: God of Heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and has charged me with building Him a house in Yerushalayim, which is in Yehuda. Anyone of you of all His people—may his God be with him, and let him go up to Yerushalayim that is in Yehuda and build the House of God of Yisrael, the God that is in Yerushalayim.” (Ezra 1:1-3, The Israel Bible)This proclamation, known as the “Edict of Cyrus”, which is repeated in 2 Chronicles (36:22-23), has been corroborated by archaeology with the discovery of the Cyrus Cylinder 140 years ago. In March 1879, an ancient clay cylinder from the 6th century BCE was found in Iraq with text affirming the Biblical account. The fascinating Cyrus Cylinder is one of the great artifacts of biblical archaeology and now rests in the British Museum.
Thanks to King Cyrus, tens of thousands of Jews returned to the Land of Israel officially ending the Babylonian captivity, exactly as promised 70 years earlier by the prophet Jeremiah. …
Today, despite the millions of Jews who have returned to Israel thanks to the proclamations of Lord Balfour and President Truman, there is one heartbreaking vestige of our ancient captivity.
Far from being a “house of prayer for all nations”, today, while Muslims are free to worship on the Temple Mount, Jews and Christians are forbidden to pray there. https://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Trump-Isnt-Cyrus-Yet-584831
Netanyahu said.
“Over the years, Israel has been blessed to have many friends who sat in the oval office. But Israel has never had a better friend than you. You showed this time and again. You showed this when you withdrew from the disastrous nuclear deal with Iran … You said it you did it.”
“You showed it again when you restored sanctions against a genocidal regime that seeks to destroy the one and only Jewish State … You said it, and you did it.”
“You showed that when you recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moved the American embassy there … You said it. You did it.”
“And you have shown it once again today, Mr. President, with your official proclamation recognizing Israel’s sovereignty on the Golan Heights.”
In a powerful detour from political platitudes, the Israeli prime minister waxed Biblical, comparing the American president to Persian King Cyrus.
“In the long sweep of Jewish history there have been a handful of proclamations by non-Jewish leaders on behalf of our people in our land: Cyrus the Great, the great Persian King, Lord Balfour, President Harry S. Truman, and President Donald J. Trump.”
“And you, Mr. President, you’ve done it not once, but twice with your bold proclamation on Jerusalem, and your bold proclamation on the Golan.,” he said. 03/26/19 https://www.breakingisraelnews.com/125485/netanyahu-compares-trump-to-cyrus-for-recognizing-golan/
Last Fall, the publication calling itself Christianity Today put out the following:
Is Trump Our Cyrus? The Old Testament Case for Yes and No
Following the 45th president’s announcement earlier this year that the US embassy in Israel would move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the Israeli Prime Minister remarked, “I want to tell you that the Jewish people have a long memory, so we remember the proclamation of the great king, Cyrus the Great, Persian king 2,500 years ago. He proclaimed that the Jewish exiles in Babylon could come back and rebuild our Temple in Jerusalem.”
American evangelicals have compared Trump to the Persian ruler since the Republican primaries. …
And, to be sure, the idea of the rise of a pagan monarch in the First Testament paralleling the rise of a democratically elected president may seem surprising. However, there are several striking links between the Babylonians’ reception to the rise of Cyrus and the American presidential campaign and election in 2016.
First, in both situations, an outsider rose to the supreme political position in the state. Cyrus was a Persian and a foreigner to Babylonian politics. A career businessman and entertainer, Trump’s rise involved eliminating a series of establishment Republican candidates before defeating the establishment Democratic candidate.
Second, although we do not know how Jewish exiles in Babylon felt about Cyrus when he first arrived, the grassroots citizenry greeted both Trump and King Cyrus enthusiastically. …
President Trump’s campaign targeted evangelicals, many of whom had felt marginalized during his predecessor’s eight years in office. In his two terms, Barack Obama alienated many conservative Christians when he stopped enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act, came out in support of gay marriage (and shockingly lit up the White House with rainbow colors after the Supreme Court’s affirmation of marriage equality), and, through the Department of Health and Human Services mandate, compelled people opposed to certain forms of birth control because of their faith commitments to provide it to their employees. …
Trump’s rhetoric recalls Cyrus’s promise to restore the proper worship of Marduk and to liberate the citizenry from the exploitation and abuse they had previously suffered.
But although these parallels are impressive, concluding that Trump imitates Cyrus ignores key differences in their stories. For starters, Trump is not a conquering emperor. He has not inherited what was once the land of Israel as part of his empire, the Jewish population of the world are not his subjects by virtue of his conquest of another nation, and he has not authorized the reconstruction of the temple in Jerusalem. 10/29/18 https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2018/october-web-only/donald-trump-cyrus-prophecy-old-testament.html
Regarding that last point, some, including some Jews, do believe that Donald Trump’s presence will at least allow for the rebuilding of a massive temple in Jerusalem. And that seems to be the piece that the Jerusalem Post author said needed to be done for Donald Trump to truly be ‘Cyrus.’
For example, the Jewish group calling itself the Sanhedrin issued a special commemorative coin (shown at the beginning of this post) to celebrate Israel’s 70th anniversary last year with the stated intent to raise money to support a future temple:
The recent effort that created the commemorative “Trump-Cyrus Coin,” sporting images of President Trump and ancient Persian King Cyrus, is now minting a special edition “70 Year Redemption Coin” to raise funds to build Jerusalem’s Third Temple as a house of prayer for all nations.
The organizers, which include Israel’s nascent Sanhedrin, the Mikdash (Temple) Educational Center and the United Temple Movements, have prepared the new coin to honor the 70th anniversary of the nation, which takes place this Thursday, April 19.
They believe the Temple project is the only way to avert the outbreak of another Middle East war.
“The Temple, as a house of prayer for all nations, is the source of true peace,” said Rabbi Hillel Weiss, spokesman for the nascent Sanhedrin, a biblically mandated court of 71 elders, told Breaking Israel News. “It has been presented in the media as a ‘flashpoint,’ the focus of conflict. That is the opposite of the truth and has actually made this lie into a reality.”
The previous project involving the commemorative Trump-Cyrus coin was so successful the organizers of the new effort are optimistic about an international effort to plan and fund the rebuilding of the Temple, a project fraught with controversy even within Israel, because of the Islamic presence of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock – two shrines atop the Temple Mount. …
The coin is currently being sold on the Mikdash Education Center’s website. All proceeds from sales will be used for re-enactments of Temple ceremonies, education on the Temple or transferred to the Third Temple when it is built. 04/15/18 http://www.wnd.com/2018/04/new-coin-minted-to-fund-building-jerusalem-temple/#LXIEspz5C9HJLs4i.99
Because of Donald Trump’s decision related to Jerusalem, some have believed this will make it easier for a ‘Third Temple’ to be built there and that Donald Trump is the biblical ‘Cyrus’ (see Donald Trump reportedly a ‘Cyrus’ preparing the way for a new Jewish temple).
The Sanhedrin released another coin related to that earlier as well (see also Sanhedrin Mints Silver Half Shekel With Images of Trump and Cyrus: Is the ‘third temple’ necessary for a successful Trump presidency?):
The Sanhedrin hopes that the sale of the coins will help it raise money for a temple as well as items related to having to operate a temple.
Because certain Jews and Evangelicals believe Donald Trump is a Cyrus, does that make him one?
No, though Donald Trump seems to like people thinking so.
Interestingly, in March of 2017, Donald Trump did attribute a quote to Cyrus the Great (see Donald ‘Trump of God,’ Cyrus, or Apocalyptic?) which, at least in my view, showed that he was trying to make the Cyrus connection he would have been aware that others have claimed him to be a type of.
The Cyrus view is not limited to Protestant and Jewish groups.
Alton “Don” Billingsley of the Church of God-Faithful Flock (CGFF) took out an advertisement in the latest edition of The Journal: News of the Churches of God related to this. Here are some of his claims:
Possibly as soon as 2018 or 2019, President Trump will follow the historical duality of King Cyrus, who made a proclamation that the second Temple would be rebuilt in the first year of his reign over Babylon. This was after the LORD stirred his spirit up to do it (Ezra 1:1). Jesus Christ will also stir up the spirit of President Trump to do the same before he leaves office in 2020. The way was paved for the Temple to be built when Jesus Christ stirred the mind of President Trump to move the Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. He fulfilled the promise he had made during his campaign to do it. And he did it in his first year in office as did King Cyrus in his first year. …
President Trump has been made aware of his likeness to King Cyrus by the religious people in Israel. And Christ using his brashness and lack of fear of what anyone thinks of his decisions will stir up his mind at the exact time to make the proclamation. With his support, the Jewish people will begin the sacrificial offerings and laying the foundation for the new Temple. …
Considering the hostility of the Arab nations and their threats of war, there are those who say this will be utterly impossible! There will be hostility against it from Congress and the Defense Department as well as from others. But to say this is impossible in view of their hostility and threats is to leave Jesus Christ out of the picture! Nothing is impossible with Him! Please remember His intervention at needed times can be seen throughout history. And the prophecy concerning the Temple will be fulfilled, for He will be behind it (Isaiah 46:8-10). …
the need to make the needed changes in life to be protected from the awful things that are very near to all of us and be prepared for the coming of Jesus Christ. And seeing the building of the Third Temple should be a real wake-up call to that end! …
Study your Bible together with this last unedited book Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong wrote, ISBN 0- 396-08773-6, and please wake up!
Note: Isaiah 46:8-10 says NOTHING ABOUT A TEMPLE TO BE BUILT.
Now let’s go back to the Hebrew scriptures and look at the Cyrus prophecy:
24 “This is what the LORD says— your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself, 25 who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense, 26 who carries out the words of his servants and fulfills the predictions of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem, ‘It shall be inhabited,’ of the towns of Judah, ‘They shall be rebuilt,’ and of their ruins, ‘I will restore them,’ 27 who says to the watery deep, ‘Be dry, and I will dry up your streams,’ 28 who says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please; he will say of Jerusalem, “Let it be rebuilt,” and of the temple, “Let its foundations be laid.” ’ (Isaiah 44:24-28)
45:1 “Thus says the Lord to His anointed,
To Cyrus, whose right hand I have held —
To subdue nations before him
And loose the armor of kings,
To open before him the double doors,
So that the gates will not be shut:
2 ‘I will go before you
And make the crooked places straight;
I will break in pieces the gates of bronze
And cut the bars of iron.
3 I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden riches of secret places,
That you may know that I, the Lord,
Who call you by your name,
Am the God of Israel.
4 For Jacob My servant’s sake,
And Israel My elect,
I have even called you by your name;
I have named you, though you have not known Me. (Isaiah 45:1-4)
We see that this prophecy was fulfilled in Ezra:
1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,
2 Thus says Cyrus king of Persia:
All the kingdoms of the earth the Lord God of heaven has given me. And He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem which is in Judah. 3 Who is among you of all His people? May his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem which is in Judah, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel (He is God), which is in Jerusalem. 4 And whoever is left in any place where he dwells, let the men of his place help him with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, besides the freewill offerings for the house of God which is in Jerusalem.
5 Then the heads of the fathers’ houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, with all whose spirits God had moved, arose to go up and build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem. 6 And all those who were around them encouraged them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with precious things, besides all that was willingly offered.
7 King Cyrus also brought out the articles of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem and put in the temple of his gods; 8 and Cyrus king of Persia brought them out by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah. (Ezra 1:1-9)
The Pulpit Commentary states this about the prophecy in Isaiah:
It is certainly a very marvellous thing that Isaiah, living at the close of the eighth and the beginning of the seventh century B.C., should -mention a king by name who did not ascend the throne till the middle of the sixth; but no one can suppose that God could not have made such a revelation to him if he pleased.
Donald Trump is NOT doing the same thing and the Cyrus prophecy was fulfilled thousands of years ago.
But various Protestants and some others have attempted to claim that Donald Trump is a modern day Cyrus and/or the “trump of God” (see Donald ‘Trump of God,’ Cyrus, or Apocalyptic?).
Donald Trump is apocalyptic–chapter 7 of my book Donald Trump and America’s Apocalypse is titled “20 Reasons Why Donald Trump is Apocalyptic,” and world events have already begun to confirm basically all of those 20 reasons (watch Trump Presidency Magic 8 Ball or Bible Prophecy?).
But unlike Cyrus, Donald Trump was not prophesied by name to get a Jewish temple rebuilt.
As far as Jerusalem, Cyrus and Donald Trump go, we also have a video:
On December 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump fulfilled a campaign promise related to the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. This brought anger, protests, and rockets from some Palestinians. It also brought condemnation from European allies–it has been claimed to be disruptive and even catastrophic. The Palestinian President (Mahmoud Abbas) said that this pronouncement eliminated the USA as being a fair mediator for a peace deal. Others have claimed that Donald Trump is an end time Cyrus and his pronouncement will lead to a Third Temple in Jerusalem. Is there ever going to be a peace deal? If so, will Europeans be part of it? Is Donald Trump a ‘Cyrus.’ Do the Jews require a Third Temple for sacrifices? Dr. Thiel answers those questions and more.

Building something like the first or second Jewish temples would be a massive project.
It is not biblically required.
Donald Trump is not a modern day Cyrus–though with various coins and comments from others, he may be thinking that he is.
Some items of possibly related interest may include:
Evangelical support for Donald Trump’s Jerusalem policy BBC asked, “Why do US evangelicals support Trump’s Jerusalem policy?” BBC provided quotes from some believing it has to do with the ‘last days’ while others saying that is not the reason. Hal Lindsey’s book, ‘The Late Great Planet Earth’ is one of the sources pointed to. In this video, Dr. Thiel addresses scriptures related to Jerusalem as well as prophetic ones. He goes over the common ‘fig tree’ interpretation, belief about a ‘Third Temple,’ and statements about animal sacrifices. He explains biblical statements on those subjects as well as the views of certain modern Jewish organizations. This is a video.

Church of God on Jerusalem’s Western Hill Could this building, often referred to as the Cenacle, which is located on a Mount Zion, possibly have been the oldest actual Christian church building?
Does the ‘Cenacle’ deal have prophetic ramifications? After a 20 year negotiation, the Church of Rome has negotiated the right to have Catholic mass in the building known as the Cenacle. It is in the area where the Church of God on Jerusalem’s Western Hill once stood. This is believed to be the location of the earliest Christian church building.
