China’s 40th, Robert Kuhn, and the future
Today, China is observing its 40th anniversary of opening up to the world. A reader tipped me off to the following:

China honoured 10 foreigners on Tuesday …
Maurice Greenberg, the former chief executive of American International Group, is also an award recipient. Greenberg was among the first American people to do business in China following Richard Nixon’s efforts to re-establish ties in the 1970s.
The other American on the list is Robert Lawrence Kuhn, a long-time adviser to Chinese leaders and the host of Closer to China with RL Kuhn on the state-run China Global Television Network, lauded for his devotion to “telling [the story of] contemporary China to the world”. …

Kuhn was described by Chinese state news agency Xinhua as “a friend who is committed to telling the world about contemporary China”.
The 74-year-old is known as an investment banker and corporate strategist for international companies, but he has also been an adviser to Chinese officials.
Kuhn met Xi Jinping in 2006 when Xi was Zhejiang party secretary.
The New Yorker is also an author whose work about China has been published extensively.
Of the 25 books he has written, the biography The Man Who Changed China: The Life and Legacy of Jiang Zemin (2004) earned him a great reputation in China. Robert Kuhn was once part of the old Worldwide Church of God. According to Wikipedia, an article he had published by him, launched him into fame:
Kuhn first came to prominence in 1972 when “Why the Vast Difference between Animal Brain and Human Mind?” appeared in The Plain Truth magazine published by Ambassador College, an institution of the Worldwide Church of God (WCG). The WCG’s Systematic Theology Project was coordinated by Kuhn, but later banned by WCG Founder Herbert W. Armstrong. Kuhn severed his connection to the WCG and its affiliates, including the Ambassador International Cultural Foundation (classical music concerts, featuring musicians including Vladimir Horowitz and Luciano Pavarotti), which Kuhn had created and managed.(Robert Lawrence Kuhn. I remember speaking with the late Dr. R.C. Meredith about Robert Kuhn 7-8 years ago, and think I spoke with Robert Kuhn about something over the telephone back then, but I do not recall the subject.
Anyway, since he was once part of the old WCG and in the news, it seemed to make sense to include him in this post about China today.

BEIJING —
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for the implementation of reforms but offered no new specific measures in a highly anticipated speech that marked the 40th anniversary of China’s move towards market liberalization.
In a speech lasting nearly an hour-and-a-half, Xi called for support of the state economy while also guiding the development of the private sector, and said China will expand efforts at opening up and ensure the implementation of major reforms.
“We must, unswervingly, reinforce the development of the state economy while, unswervingly, encouraging, supporting and guiding the development of the non-state economy,” Xi said during a speech at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.
Xi was speaking on the day China marked as the 40th anniversary of the start of late leader Deng Xiaoping’s campaign of “reform and opening up,” which led to explosive industrial growth that made China’s economy the world’s second-largest.
“Opening brings progress while closure leads to backwardness,” he added.
“Every step of reform and opening up is not easy. In the future, we will be inevitably faced with all sorts of risks and challenges, and even unimaginable tempestuous storms,” said Xi, stressing the role the ruling Communist Party.
Xi was speaking amid mounting pressure to accelerate reforms and improve market access for foreign companies as a bitter trade war with the United States weighs on the Chinese economy.
China’s heavy support of its sprawling state sector has been a point of contention with the United States.
The trade war has spurred some Chinese entrepreneurs, government advisers and think tanks to call for faster economic reforms and the freeing up of a private sector stifled by state controls and struggling to gain access to credit.

The trade situation between the USA and China remains tense.
China is trying to trade with the USA, while also trying to increase trade ties to Europe, Africa, South America, and the rest of Asia.
The Chinese Silk Road project is perhaps the most ambitious project China has been engaging in to try to do that (watch also Is China paving roads to Armageddon?).
The Chinese are also working with the Europeans regarding the World Trade Organization as they feel that they can better deal with the Europeans than US President Donald Trump.
As far as the future goes, the Bible shows that the world’s main trading power will be European (cf. Revelation 17-18), and Chinese actions are, at least indirectly, supporting that.
Beyond that, one day China will also turn against the Europeans and help support the 200 million man army that Revelation speaks of (Revelation 9:13-18).
But the good news, is that shortly after that Jesus will return and establish the millennial Kingdom of God.
