Class Warfare: Obama and Romney

COGwriter

US President Obama announced another plan to increase taxes on those that already pay the most taxes in that country.  Some are accusing him of class warfare and some are accusing his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, of the same:

Washington Examiner – ‎9 July 2012
President…Obama “is changing the subject to tax fairness” by calling for tax hikes on all Americans who make more than $250,000 a year. According to the Times, Obama “hopes to deepen the contrast with his challenger, Mitt Romney. On Friday, the president said Mr. Romney would ‘give $5 trillion of new tax cuts on top of the Bush tax cuts, most of them going to the wealthiest Americans.’” Class warfare it is then…Obama seems to have resigned himself to a weak economy this fall, and he knows he can’t win on that. Instead, he will run on tax hikes and class warfare, hoping to redistribute wealth instead of creating it.

Fox News – ‎9 July 2012
President Obama, amid charges of waging class warfare, is expected to push Monday for a tax hike on families earning more than $250000 — and an extension of the Bush-era tax rates for families making less than that.
Businessweek – ‎9 July 2012
By Hans Nichols on July 09, 2012 President Barack Obama will call today for a one-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts for families making less than $250000 a year as he seeks to sharpen differences with congressional Republicans and their presumptive presidential candidate, Mitt Romney.

…why have Republicans used class resentment so effectively for the last 60 years? Joseph McCarthy, the man whose specter terrified Democrats for a generation, was all about class warfare.

Instead of encouraging people to turn to biblical morality, class warfare seems to be a major factor in the USA presidential election in 2012.  Although both presidential contenders are wealthy, class warfare looks like it is to be a major component of this election.
.
Instead of urging repentance, both candidate are focusing on economic issues.  But the problems in the USA have spiritual causes.  I personally believe that, in the USA, factors such as legalizing abortion, redefining marriage, the increasing public acceptance of immodestly dressed females, pornography, violent sports, covetousness, and other sins are the root cause of its economic problems (cf. Deuteronomy 28:15-20). There is a better way to help the economy as there are appropriate biblical provisions for debt relief (Deuteronomy 15:1-2), gleaning (Leviticus 19:10), helping the poor (1 Timothy 5:3-7; Deuteronomy 26:12-15, see also Is Third Tithe Still Valid Today?), paying poor workers (Deuteronomy 24:14-15), and certain land distribution issues (Leviticus 25:8-17). Yet, what many of the electorate seems to want is unbiblical (cf Acts 5:4; Exodus 20:17).
.
God will solve the problems that plague humanity when He comes–this is part of the gospel–the good news–of the coming Kingdom of God. Individually people should humble themselves and submit to Him and His ways now, but only few will currently do so. People may not wish to hear this, but the Bible is clear that there will always be problems with poverty in this age. Hence, income redistribution through further increased taxes per sewould not seem to be the biblical solution. The Bible shows that despite provisions that some may consider to be regulations and/or restrictions on capitalism, there still will be poor people:

7 “If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, 8 but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs…11 For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’ (Deuteronomy 15:7-8,10)

7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up. 8 He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them inherit the throne of glory. (1 Samuel 2:7-8)

8 For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always. (John 12:8)

As far as both presidential candidates go, first let me state that Mitt Romney’s current positions on abortion and government mandated health care differ from the positions he took when he was governor of Massachusetts.  Whether he repented on abortion or is taking a different position for political expediency is unclear to me (and if he truly has changed his position for moral reasons, I applaud him for that).  As far as US President Obama goes, he has been consistent on his positions on those issues, as well as even on class warfare.
.
Earlier this year, US President Obama said that Jesus taught that to whom much is given much is required (Obama Claims His Economic Policies are Linked to His ‘Christian Faith’).  And that is true.   But was Jesus talking about taxes?
Notice what Jesus actually said:
47 And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.  48 But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more. (Luke 12:47-48)
It does not sound like Jesus was advocating what some, including President Obama (see Obama: ‘You Can Call this Class Warfare’), have called class warfare.

The end-time sorrows and troubles in society are still in the beginning stages (Matthew 24:5-8), and will get much worse according to the Bible (Matthew 24:21-22). I believe that class warfare will backfire.  Class warfare and other protests will ultimately escalate and help weaken the USA, Canada, and their other Anglo-nations and likely will also be a factor in them being vulnerable to real warfare: invasion by the final Beast power that the Bible warns about (Revelation 13; Daniel 11:39).

Neither US presidential candidate will resolve this.  National repentance, not class warfare, is what the USA needs.
