Obama seems to have secured enough Senate votes to get his Iranian deal ‘veto-proof’

After another senator says she will vote in favor of it, US President Obama looks like he will get his nuclear deal:

CAPITOL HILL —A U.S. senator’s announcement that she will vote for the international agreement to restrict Iran’s nuclear program gave President Barack Obama a major foreign-policy victory Wednesday.

Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, a Democrat, was the 34th member of the Senate to pledge her support for the deal when it comes up for a vote in the US. Congress – – enough to assure that Obama will prevail in the administration’s effort to complete action on the landmark nuclear agreement.

Senator Mikulski said, “No deal is perfect, especially one negotiated with the Iranian regime.” However, she added, she has concluded the Iran deal – formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – is the best option available to block Tehran from producing a nuclear bomb. http://www.voanews.com/content/iran-nuclear-deal-assured-of-passage-in-big-victory-for-obama-/2942335.html

While it is true in this age that no governmental deal is likely to be perfect, this particular one is bad. Ignoring what it does not cover, the reality is that Iran keeps saying that it will only voluntarily comply as it wants to (see Iran’s President supports deal, but does not want his pariliament to make it a ‘legal obligation.’ Is Barack Obama’s role in this consistent with prophecy?).

Iran gambled that the West wanted a deal so badly that it would make a deal closer to what Iran wanted–and it has. It acts like the West has little choice and that it can devastate the USA (c.f. Iranian leader’s tweet shows gun at Barack Obama’s head). But Iran would not fare well with a real all out war with the USA. The USA could be severely damaged, but Iran could basically be eliminated.

The reality is that after Iran gets much or all of its frozen assets, it will have little incentive to comply with the deal. But could use some of that money to trade with the Europeans as well as others. Some believe that Iran will be better able to fund terrorism with the funds that are expected to be released. Israel realizes this.

Iran has no intention of wanting to be the friend of the USA or anything but an enemy to Israel. Iran’s top leader clearly has also indicated that (see After deal, Iran’s Khamenei calls USA ‘arrogant’ and ‘the real terrorists;’ he also says Iran will not change its policies in Middle East).

So, what will happen with Iran? What does it really want?

Iran wants to takeover Jerusalem and lead the Islamic world. It then wants to takeover the world.

It hopes that the West will let it get far enough in its military plans to make that a possibility.

The time may well come when Iran ‘overplays its hand.’ We in the Continuing Church of God do not believe that Iran will be the final King of the South of Bible prophecy (cf. Daniel 11:4-43). Because of that, I have tended to believe that Iran may somehow get “neutralized” before this final king rises up. And it may be that provoking some type of conflict with Israel (through an attack or through simply possessing nuclear bombs) and/or the USA, etc. Since no later than May of 2010, I have been writing that since Iran cannot be the final King of the South, Iran may be neutralized (see Iran Slams Russia). If it overplays its hand, it may well be neutralized.

This nuclear deal, including its access to funds, and Iran’s overall ambitions make Iran dangerous. Iran may well damage Israel (Isaiah 22:1-14) and even the USA. But that will not end well for Iran (cf. Jeremiah 49:34-38).

But although it does provide support to various Islamic causes now, and probably will in the future, Iran will not be the power that the Bible teaches will be the coming King of the South. And if it is discovered not properly handling its latest nuclear agreement, its neutralization could come soon from outside sources.

US President Obama may well get his way on the deal with Iran, but that does not make a bad deal a good one. As far as the USA goes, presidential candidates have their own view of the deal:

Some 2016 presidential hopefuls have already outlined an agenda of what they would do on their first day in the White House — and many have set their sights on the Iran nuclear agreement. The controversial deal on Wednesday secured the pledged support from Democrats in Congress it needed to prevent Republicans from scuttling the agreement.

Other candidates’ day one agendas, meanwhile, include actions as varied as repealing Obama administration executive orders to hosting a pig roast on the White House lawn.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says that if he were elected president, the U.S. would halt negotiations with Iran and pull the nuclear deal.

“As president, on my very first day going forward, I would pull back — I would terminate that bad deal with Iran completely on day one,” Walker said on Fox News hours before the landmark deal was announced in June. “I would then put in place crippling economic sanctions against Iran, and I’d convince our allies that this is not a country we should be doing business with.” http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/02/politics/iran-nuclear-deal-2016-day-one-promises/

The Republican candidates are basically opposed to the deal, whereas the Democratic candidates are basically in favor. Whether or not a Republican president would actually be able to stop the deal once taking office is dubious. Trying to stop it in 2017 may trigger conflict.

While a temporary peace will come to the Middle East (cf. Daniel 9:27, see also The ‘Peace Deal’ of Daniel 9:27), as I have said before, this nuclear deal with Iran is not that one. But this deal is one to watch (cf. Mark 13:37).
