WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland will be a focus of European attention this week, with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki addressing the European Parliament and leaders at a European Union summit expected to grapple with a legal conundrum created by a recent ruling by Poland’s constitutional court.

Some opponents of Poland’s nationalist government fear that the court’s ruling has put the country on a path to a possible “Polexit,” or a departure from the 27-nation EU like Britain did with Brexit. The government denounces those spreading the idea, which it calls “fake news.” Here is a look at the differing views on the matter — and why Poland’s departure from the bloc is unlikely.

THE BACKSTORY

Poland’s government, which is led by the conservative Law and Justice party, has been in conflict with EU officials in Brussels since it took power in 2015. The dispute is largely over changes to the Polish judicial system which give the ruling party more power over the courts. Polish authorities say they seek to reform a corrupt and inefficient justice system. The European Commission believes the changes erode the country’s democratic system of checks and balances. …

This month Poland’s constitutional court challenged the notion that EU law supersedes the laws of its 27 member nations with a ruling saying that some EU laws are incompatible with the nation’s own constitution.

That decision — made by a court dominated by ruling party loyalists — gives the Polish government the justification it had sought to ignore directives from the European Union’s Court of Justice which it doesn’t like — particularly on matters of judicial independence.

The ruling marks another major test for the EU after years of managing its messy divorce from the U.K.

EU Weighing Options for Poland Response

The European Commission is considering potential legal and financial responses after Poland’s constitutional court challenged the supremacy of EU law, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Tuesday.

Speaking during a meeting of EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, von der Leyen said the Polish court’s ruling earlier this month was “a direct challenge to the unity of the EU.”

“We cannot and we will not allow our common values to be put at risk,” she said.

The judges for Poland’s highest court ruled that the national constitution had primacy over EU law.

The increased tensions between Poland the EU fed speculation that Poland, which joined the bloc in 2004, could move toward withdrawing.

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Tuesday that while his country will not be intimidated, it abides by EU treaties and expects a constructive dialogue on the issue. https://www.voanews.com/a/eu-weighing-options-for-poland-response-/6276487.html

Poland does not want to leave the European Union (see BBC: Mass protests in Poland amid EU exit fears) and the European Union does not want to lose Poland–which is one of the reasons it is “weighing options.”

Although many see the EU as basically an economic union, the EU sees itself as more than that.

But the USA has remained dismissive of it and tends to consider it somewhat of a legal distraction as the following points out:

The key to understanding the splits within the western global order represented by the new AUKUS Alliance between the U.S., Australia and the U.K. is the following:

The attitude of the USA has incensed the EU more than any Polish court. As far as AUKUS goes, watch: AUKUS sparking European military.

The EU wants to be an empire. On July 10, 2007, Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso, then, President of the European Commission Parliament, was asked by a journalist how he would characterise the European Union. Here is President Barroso’s answer:

“Sometimes I like to compare it to compare the European Union as a creation to the organisation of empires. We have the dimension of Empire but there is a great difference. Empires were usually made with force with a centre imposing diktat, a will on the others. Now what we have is the first non-Imperial empire. We have 27 countries that fully decided to work together and to pool their sovereignty. I believe it is a great construction and we should be proud of it. In order to do be an empire, it needs to be able to have legal and other controls over members states.

Because the EU has increased prosperity in Eastern Europe, it is popular among many.

Furthermore, the Bible shows that a power in Europe WILL bring about even more prosperity for a time (cf. Revelation 18),

That being said, as I mentioned before, the old WCG published the following in 1983 about the then Pope pushing for Poland to have its “proper place” in Europe. Gene Hogberg wrote:

Few comprehend the long-term objectives of Pope John Paul II with regard to Poland and all of Eastern-and Western-Europe.

THERE IS no doubt about it now. As a result of his dramatic trip to his Polish homeland last June, Pope John Paul II is firmly established as the most charismatic leader in the Western world.

The televised spectacle of his performance before millions of Poles over eight days elevated the Pope, said one American newsman, to the status of a “spiritual superpower.” Once again the Polish-born Pope showed his capacity to speak out with boldness — but with canny political caution at the same time.

At no time, despite criticism from Polish Communist authorities that his messages were becoming “too political,” did the Pope preach revolution. Yet the Pontiff was unmistakably clear in speaking out on what he felt were the “sovereign rights” of the Polish people.

On day two of his visit, the Pontiff told Prime Minister Wojciech Jaruzelski in Warsaw that Poland had a right to “her proper place among the nations of Europe, between the East and the West.” He reminded General Jaruzelski that Pope Paul VI had stated that “Poland has a right to sovereign existence.” …

Startling Long-range View

John Paul II is pursuing both short-term and long-term goals. Regarding the former, it is to elevate the status of the church to that of co-rulership in Poland, to fully participate in the political and economic spheres of the country to help relieve the dispirited people’s fortunes.

But the Pope’s long-range view is not confined to Poland alone. His vision of the future is much more all — encompassing — and startling.

“The pope,” wrote William Pfaff in the June 27 Los Angeles Times, “has undertaken the liberation of Eastern Europe. It is not too much to describe what he has begun with his second visit to Poland in those words. This audacious program involves serious risks, but also displays an intelligence, an understanding of history and a powerful will that are all but invisible among Western statesmen.”

John Paul II believes that the unity and fervor of Poland’s Catholics can provide, according to journalist Pfaff, “a first step in the moral reanimation of the other churches of the East, and then of the West.”

The Pope has been consistent in this theme. Only last year in Spain, he proclaimed the following, in what he called a “Declaration to Europe”:

“I, John Paul, son of the Polish nation which has always considered itself European by its origins, traditions, culture and vital relationships, Slavic among the Latins and Latin among the Slavs;… I, Bishop of Rome and Shepherd of the Universal Church, from Santiago, utter to you, Europe of the ages, a cry full of love: Find yourself again. Be yourself. Discover your origins, revive your roots.”

Poland, unlike other countries of Europe, has not lost its roots. It has been fervently Roman Catholic for more than 1,000 years. (Hogberg G. Behind the Pope’s SPIRITUAL OFFENSIVE In Eastern Europe. Plain Truth, October 1983)

Both the old WCG and the Vatican were correct that Poland would end up uniting with Europe.

At the beginning of this post there is a picture on Twitter about numerous nations potentially exiting from the European Union. While that is not impossible, the prophetic reality is that the Bible shows that the coming European Beast power will have trouble sticking together well:

41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold — the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure. (Daniel 2:41-45)

So, yes, despite adhesion issues, the final European Beast power will form.

While it will not last, because it will be replaced by the return of Jesus and the establishment of the millennial Kingdom of God, Europe will reorganize from where it now is and become more dictatorial:

12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Revelation 17:12-13)

36 “Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done. 37 He shall regard neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall exalt himself above them all. 38 But in their place he shall honor a god of fortresses; and a god which his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and pleasant things. (Daniel 11:36-38)

Based upon biblical prophecies, despite how the current spat between the EU and Poland ends, the time will come when Europe will be controlled by a dictatorial power known as the Beast.

That will be the outcome.

However, the good news remains that Jesus WILL return and establish the Kingdom of God.
