Negotiators at the the UN climate summit in Madrid agreed Sunday to a deal aimed at averting a global warming disaster, though one that pushed key decisions to a future date.
The marathon talks went into overtime, extending more than 36 hours past the expected conclusion date and making COP25 the longest UN climate conference to date.
The final agreement was far from the bold call to action that climate-protection proponents had hoped for. Many of the delegates expressed disappointment over the outcome of the conference.
What happened?
- The final draft acknowledged the “significant gap” between existing pledges and temperature goals set forth in the 2015 Paris climate agreement.
- Countries failed to establish market rules for trading carbon credits, considered one of the most contentious issues at the conference.
- Another big miss was figuring out how to fund poorer countries to mitigate damage caused by climate change.

The UN Climate Summit (COP25) ended this Sunday in Madrid with a modest agreement, postponing until next year a key decision on global carbon markets.
Delegates from almost 200 nations passed declarations calling for greater ambition in cutting planet-heating greenhouse gases and in helping poor countries suffering the effects of climate change.
But despite holding the longest climate talks ever in 25 nearly annual editions, they left one of the thorniest issues, carbon markets, for the next summit in Glasgow in a year’s time. …
European Union countries and others have said they would prefer not to finalise rules on international carbon markets rather than to approve ones that could undermine efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Economists say allowing companies and rich countries to invest in carbon-cutting measures such as forest protection in poor countries could become a vital tool for lowering emissions, provided the markets are transparent and there is no double counting.
“We are all looking for a compromise,” Frans Timmermans, the European Commission’s top official in charge of climate issues, said earlier on Friday. “But there is no way, no way, we could accept a compromise that jeopardises environmental integrity. Just no way.” …
In 2013, countries agreed on a tentative system to channel such aid, known as the Warsaw International Mechanism. But some rich countries, particularly the United States, have resisted attempts to hold them formally accountable for the impact their greenhouse gas emissions have on the climate, prompting criticism from developing nations. …

After the COP 25 climate talks on the Paris climate agreement went into overtime Friday night amid a stalled agreement on wealthy countries’ contributions to greatly reducing their climate-warming carbon emissions, civil society groups and climate scientists were shocked by the weak language that emerged from the late-night talks on Saturday.
The latest text includes an “invitation” for countries to communicate their mid-term and long-term climate plans, and the majority of delegations, which attempted to push countries including the U.S. towards ambitious climate targets, were unable Saturday to sway the U.S. away from language regarding carbon markets. …
The U.S. is also reportedly still objecting to provisions that would hold it liable for the destruction the climate crisis has already wreaked in island nations.
The deal as it stands would “condemn those on the frontlines of the climate crisis, while hiding the crimes of polluters,” said the groups. “And it would lead to increased inequality with no increase in ambition, no real emissions reductions, and no pathway to 1.5 [degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.]” …
“This is nothing less than a breakdown in the Paris Agreement. This is not climate leadership, this is a betrayal of humanity and future generations,” tweeted climate scientist Eric Holthaus.
“What’s happening today at COP 25 is a clear and present threat to civilization itself,” Holthaus added. “The Trump administration and its fossil fuel allies around the world have sabotaged the Paris Agreement—the only global treaty we have to fight climate change. This has happened. And the US is increasingly being considered an international outlier as well as being considered an obstacle to a better world. The nations of the world, and particularly in Europe, will not forgive the USA for its positions on these matters–even if someone replaces Donald Trump in 2021.

The States of the world gathered at the United Nations for the one-day Climate Action Summit on September 23. …
On Sept. 20 hundreds of thousands of young people peacefully protested climate change and the World Council of Churches walked alongside them in cities such as New York, Hamburg, Oslo, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Melbourne
Lining up with the WCC are the ACT Alliance and the Lutheran World Federation, which together represent 580 million Christians globally.
“As we focus on the interconnectedness of God’s creation, our churches are urging governments worldwide to take stronger measures and present concrete plans to address climate change – now,” the WCC said in a statement.

Yes, many of the world’s churches are involved in this. The head of the World Council of Churches basically (and wrongly) equated not supporting the climate change agenda as the unpardonable sin.

Pope Francis has endorsed the UN agenda. He attempted to assist with it by making an encyclical titled Laudato Si. While it is not clear if he pushed the UN to accept his views or the UN got him to accept its views, but the reality is that both sides came up with the same views. And these views had a lot to do with economic and societal control and not a huge amount of pollution-related actions.
Pope Francis lamented that there was not the political will to implement his climate change agenda. He also sent a letter to the COP25 conference:

A little more than four years after Pope Francis published one of his most provocative documents, not to mention perhaps his most political, in the form of his eco-encyclical Laudato Si’, the Pontiff appears increasingly disappointed in the way the environmental manifesto been received.
In two separate messages published this week, Francis appeared to suggest that the global resolve to combat climate change and other ecological threats his encyclical hoped to produce is failing, due a lack of commitment from the parties involved.
In a December 4 message to the UN Climate Change Conference summit in Madrid, he said: “We must seriously ask ourselves if there is the political will to allocate with honesty, responsibility and courage, more human, financial and technological resources to mitigate the negative effects of climate change.”
Running from December 2-13, the summit, known as COP25, was intended to be a venue in which the UN identifies concrete strategies for the implementation of the so-called Paris Agreement of 2015, which provided a framework of climate action adopted in hopes of reducing greenhouse gas emissions enough to keep global temperatures from rising to a perilous degree. …
However, he lamented that conflicts bubbled up after Laudato Si’ and the Paris agreement, saying “compromises” were made between “what was assumed and the purse, the economic interests of some countries”.
He pointedly added that “some countries have withdrawn” from the agreement. Though he did not name names, it’s hard not to read the comment as a reference to US President Donald Trump, who is currently the only global leader who has announced plans to withdraw from the Paris Climate accord. …
In remarks to the 48 Jesuits present for the conversation in Thailand, the text of which was published on the Italian Jesuit-run newspaper La Civilta Cattolica, Francis said … “we must continue to work so that the fundamental message that Laudato Si’ intends to communicate is shared worldwide.” https://www.irishcatholic.com/pope-vents-frustration-over-lack-of-political-will-to-implement-laudato-si/
Consider that Pope Francis’ questioning “if there is the political will to” implement his worldwide plan looks to be a call for a reorganization of society to do that. And that is also something that his Laudato Si encyclical pushed for. The Bible shows that Europe will reorganize (Revelation 17:12-13; see also Must the Ten Kings of Revelation 17:12 Rule over Ten Currently Existing Nations?) and most of the world will go along with it in worship (cf. Revelation 13:1-10).
Pope Francis, the WCC’s Olav Fykse Tveit, and others have been pushing a false gospel. We also made a video about that:
A Different False Gospel
While there have been a variety of false gospels since at least the time of Simon Magus and the Gnostics, there is a relatively new one being pushed by major leaders of the world’s churches. Essentially, leaders are teaching that ‘climate change’ is related to salvation, the unpardonable sin, and something called the ‘social gospel.’ This is being pushed by leaders including Pope Francis of the Church of Rome, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and Olav Tveit of the World Council of Churches. Is this a false gospel consistent with Galatians 1:6-11? Are these angels of light or something else (cf. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 )? While it is good to not pollute, will the ecumenical climate change agenda work according to the Bible? Dr. Thiel address these issues and more.

This false gospel is one that does not involve repentance towards God, does not require accepting Jesus as the only name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12), nor does it embrace “the faith once delivered to the saints.”
Pope Francis and others are promoting a worldly view that without repentance, but through international cooperation of unconverted leaders, the world will be able to improve itself and solve its problems.
The Bible says that will not work.
Twice the Bible warns:
There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. (Proverbs 14:12, 16:25)
Instead of humans fixing the world’s problems, Jesus warned:
21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. (Matthew 24:21-22)
The Bible teaches:
1 Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; (Psalm 127:1)
While the WORLD’S churches are involved in “Climate Action,” they, most often, have not have sought to go about it God’s way. They are laboring in vain. This does not mean that humans should waste resources or pollute, and some steps should be taken, but the thrust of the agenda is not to be proper biblical stewards of the earth. Instead, the details tend to focus on various controlling methods that are often not consistent with biblical morals.
Christians should try to pollute less and waste less. We should not litter. We should pick up after ourselves. We should try to insure our plastic trash does not blow into waterways or on the land. We should try to avoid, or minimize, the use of synthetic chemicals where it is feasible. And yes, we can separate trash for recycling, as well as try to reuse items instead of throwing them away and replacing them. We should live as Christian pacifists–human wars have long been a factor in pollution and destruction and this will get worse. We should live as Jesus and strive not to sin, while we look forward to, and teach, about the coming Kingdom of God.
Despite UN and other goals on the environment, the Bible shows that the ecological system will get much worse as higher heat is coming:
8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory. (Revelation 16:8-9)
Note, however, the above prophecy is for several years into the future–we are not too near that yet.
Dealing with rising temperatures is NOT “A race we can win,” without repentance, as an earlier UN Climate Action Summit slogan claims.
But with international efforts to push towards globalism, often now without the USA, the world will try to create something claimed to fulfill the vision of Pope Francis, Europe, and the UN. Yet, it will not bring lasting peace–it will end in death and destruction.
The Bible is clear that a new world will then come. But that will be the millennial Kingdom of God, not from the UN Climate Action Summit, pressure from the WCC, or the Vatican’s Laudato Si.
While humans should strive to pollute less, the meetings and conferences do not seem to have had much impact on that.
God can truly fix the disaster that humans are causing through sin. Something that many in the UN, WCC, and Vatican do not believe or understand.
