Islamic State militants kidnapped at least 90 people from Assyrian Christian villages during raids in northeastern Syria, activists said Tuesday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors violence in Syria, said the militants abducted people after seizing Tal Shamiram and other Assyrian villages in Hassakeh province.

The kidnappings follow clashes in the area Monday between Kurdish fighters and the Islamic State group.

The Kurds launched an offensive in the region near the Iraqi border on Sunday with support from the U.S.-led coalition conducting airstrikes against the militants.

The U.S. military said 11 airstrikes Sunday in Hassakeh hit Islamic State tactical units, vehicles and a militant bunker.

The Kurdish fighters have led ground fighting against the Islamic State group in several parts of northern Syria. In another effort backed by airstrikes, the Kurds retook control of the town of Kobani from Islamic State fighters last month.

Nuri Kino, the head of the activist group A Demand For Action — that focuses on religious minorities in the Middle East — said the militants took between 70 and 100 Assyrians captive. Kino said his organization based its information on conversations with villagers who fled the onslaught and their relatives.

Kino added that some 3,000 people managed to flee the onslaught and have sought refuge in the cities of Hassakeh and the provincial capital of Qamishli.

Both activist groups said that most of the captives come from the village of Tal Shamiram, located some 50 miles southwest of Qamishli.

An Assyrian woman from Tal Shamiram who now lives in Beirut said she has been scrambling to find out what has become of her parents as well as her brother and his wife and kids.

“Land lines have been cut, their mobiles are closed,” she told The Associated Press. “Have they been slaughtered? Are they still alive? We’re searching for any news.”

She spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of endangering relatives believed to be held by the militants.

“My family visited me last month and returned to Syria. There were clashes but it was normal, nothing exceptional. I feel so helpless, I cannot do anything for them but pray,” she said by telephone, her voice breaking.

ISIS’ online radio station, al-Bayan, said in a report Tuesday that ISIS fighters had detained “tens of crusaders” and seized 10 villages around Tal Tamr after clashes with Kurdish militiamen. ISIS frequently refers to Christians as “crusaders.” Syria’s official SANA news agency reported that ISIS overran seven villages during an attack on Monday.

The term ‘crusaders’ refers to those who use the cross as part of their religion. Although the Islamic State considers that this is a ‘Christian’ icon, the reality is that this is not something that the true Christian church ever adopted, though the Greco-Roman derived ones have (see What is the Origin of the Cross as a ‘Christian’ Symbol?).

Getting back to the Islamic State itself, it is horrible that it is kidnapping, pillaging, etc. Those affected by them are in my prayers.

The Bible predicts a confederation of peoples in the Middle East and North Africa will get together (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:2-8). This confederation will not be truly united (cf. Daniel 11:41), and will be betrayed by some of its members (Daniel 11:27), but it will unite for a time.

Because of the outrageous acts of the Islamic State (see, for example UN suspects Islamic State is taking and selling human organs to fund terrorism and Islamic State’s horrifying answers about Non-Muslim females), various ones have called for a version of this confederation to form (Egypt calls for ‘King of the South’ military and Obama Administration Pushing for an Islamic Empire?). And biblically, we know that it must.

The actions by the Islamic State and other Islamic terrorist groups seem to be accelerating the time when the final King of the South will rise up. What is happening now is horrific.
