Mitt Romney Supporting a Preemptive Strike By Israel on Iran, and to a Degree, so is the Obama Administration
Mitt Romney (Gage Skidmore, 2011)
Expected US Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is in Israel and an aid released some statements of military support:
29 July 2012
Wall Street Journal – By SARA MURRAY JERUSALEM—Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney would support Israel if it launched strikes on Iran to halt its nuclear program, a senior campaign adviser said Sunday as he accompanied the candidate on a swing through Israel…The Obama administration has presented its view on the matter slightly differently. It has said Israel has a right to defend itself, but it has discouraged the country from a unilateral strike.
And, it is not only Mitt Romney’s side. The Obama Administration is in news today for more privately providing support:
By AMY TEIBEL, Associated Press – 29 July 2012
JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli newspaper reported Sunday that the Obama administration’s top security official has briefed Israel on U.S. plans for a possible attack on Iran, seeking to reassure it that Washington is prepared to act militarily should diplomacy and sanctions fail to pressure Tehran to abandon its nuclear enrichment program.
Yet, if Israel attacks Iran it likely will also have to be engaged with Syria and probably at least part of Lebanon, and perhaps some of the Palestianians. The USA, presuming it gets involved, would have mess on its hands.
Of course, Iran and Syria need to have changes before certain biblical prophecies (e.g. Daniel 11:40) get fulfilled. And this may mean that destruction will happen in Syria, as its capital is prophesied to be destroyed (Isaiah 17:1), there will be regime changes, economic sanctions will help bankrupt them, and/or they will be substantially affected by internal and/or regional conflict.
But that does not mean that Israel and/or the USA will get away with little or no cost.
The reality is that the cost to Israel (and likely the USA) for a regional war involving Iran and/or Syria will be higher than many in the USA or Israel believe. Between terrorist acts, sustained resistance, chemical weapons, biological weapons, emp-type bombs, and/or even disruptions of the internet, Iran and/or Syria can inflict significant damage to their enemies.
Lives are likely to be lost in Israel, and possibly the USA. Just like the cost to the old Soviet Union for being involved in the occupation of Afghanistan was a factor that led to its dissolution, the cost to Israel and/or the USA for a regional war involving Iran and its allies may hurt both the USA and Israel. It may be a factor in the coming division of Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:2) and may be a factor in weakening the USA (which will happen during “the beginning of sorrows”).
Yet, the USA and the tiny of nation of Israel would not be “eliminated” by that–it will come later, by the King of the North (cf. Daniel 11:39) before he takes on the King of the South (Daniel 11:40). But since Iran will not be the King of the South and Syria apparently will support the King of the South, the situation in those countries will change–and this certainly could happen from an attack involving Israel and/or the USA.
