Russia is still backing Iran, but there are limits:

Russia slams new sanctions against Iran

‎CNN – 22 November 2011
(CNN) — Russia called new sanctions against Iran “unacceptable,” saying the new punishments would hurt efforts to talk with Tehran.

US, Russia and UK Back Israel at Mideast Meeting

Fox News – 22 November 2011
AP VIENNA– In a boost to Israel, Russia joined the US and Britain on Tuesday in backing the Jewish state’s view that the Middle East cannot be turned into  a nuclear arms-free zone without progress on regional peace. The three nations — who are charged with registering new members to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty — also blunted Arab efforts to get them involved creating such a zone, telling an International Atomic Energy Agency meeting that was the sole responsibility of countries in the region…

Israel says Iran is the greatest threat to the region through its refusal to heed U.N. Security Council resolutions demanding it stop activities that could be used to make nuclear weapons and suspected research and development of such capabilities. Tehran denies any interest in such arms.Iran boycotted the meeting.

Russia is an ally of Iran, but not a particularly close one–Russia is a bit more pragmatic and does what it believes in its interest, and that can change with the right international pressure (as well as internal needs/wants).

Iran, though, often ignores outsiders, including even supporters, for its own objectives. Part of the reason is that the government of Iran believes it is destined (since the Iranian revolution) to cause enough military commotion that the Imam Mahdi of Shi’ite prophecy (similar to the King of the South) will have to rise up, and that is not something that Russia cares for.  Russia has issues with Muslims in several of the states that were once part of the old Soviet Union–Russia tries to toe a line between being supportive of Islamic countries, when it wants, while not encouraging Islamic uprisings in any of its lands (including some states that it wants that were part of the old Soviet Union).

Notice, though, a report on some timing factors that may influence decisions in Iran, based upon how Iran’s President Ahmadinejad and his boss view events:

As the Koran states the Mahdi will not return in an odd-numbered year, as world chaos is to precipitate his reappearance, as Ahmadinejad claims the Mahdi’s return will occur before his presidency ends in 2013, as a dying Khamenei claims the return will happen before his death, and as Iran stands on the brink of arming itself with nuclear weapons, Khamenei and Ahmadinejad view the planets as all falling into alignment for them.  From the vantage point of these two fanatics, 2012 may be shaping up as the year of the Mahdi’s return. (Zumwalt J.  Iran’s Dynamic Duo Dedicated to Global Destruction.  August 13, 2010. http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=38528)

Now,if Iran acts on this, this would push the arrival of the Imam Mahdi no earlier than November 2012, as the next even-numbered year on the Islamic calendar, year 1434 goes from November 15, 2012 to November 3, 2013.

It is possible that the government of Iran may provoke something that it hopes will trigger the rise of this leader very soon.  There is a video, which I viewed, that has clips of Iran’s President Ahmadinejad that essentially shows that Iran wishes to militarily take-over Jerusalem as a prelude to the Imam Mahdi rising up, and that it hopes that the rest of the Islamic world will follow Iran if it takes this step (see Iran’s Ahmadinejad to Conquer Jerusalem?).

Russia, who does not wish to support an Islamic leadership of the world, does not intend to support the appearance of an Islamic Mahdi.  And Iran knows that, thus it realizes that there are limits to Russia’s “friendship.”

Events are moving forward in the Middle East, Iran, and other parts of the world for the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Some of these events may happen in 2012.

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:37)
