The next pope—potentially terrifying? Does the Bible point to that?
Several have concerns about the one who will be the last, or perhaps the next, pope:
1000-year-old prophecy predicts the next pope but has terrifying warning for humanity
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday after suffering from ill health for a long period
22 April 2025
A supposed prophecy meant to be close to being millennium-old claims to predict the next pope and has a chilling warning for humanity. …
there’s a book known as the Prophecy of the Popes, which was claimed to have been written in the 1100s by an Irish chap called Saint Malachy, or just Malachy to his friends, as he was made a saint several decades after his death.
His alleged prophecy claims to list 112 popes, and we’ve almost entirely run through the list with just a reference to ‘Peter the Roman’ left and some prophetic doomsaying to follow.
The final entry says the last pope will be: “Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End.”
So that’s Rome getting destroyed and what sounds like the end of the world, and some interpretations of the Prophecy of the Popes reckon it tips the world to end in 2027 which is not far off. https://www.ladbible.com/news/world-news/pope-francis-death-next-catholic-church-leader-rules-298345-20250421
While the next pope may or may not be terrifying, the end will NOT come in 2027. Related to the Malachy list and the end supposedly coming in 2027, we put out the following video:
Malachy Prophecy, Francis, Doom in 2027?
Do you know who Malachy was? He was an Irish bishop and saint of the Roman Catholic church who put together a list about 900 years ago. This list has been a source of amazement and interest for centuries and at the same time it has also been a source of ridicule. Recently his list has been making headlines; the publication, Euronews has an article citing “Malachy’s List” and doom in 2027. The reason Malachy’s List is once again front-page news is because of what the list contains, as well as because of health concerns related to Pope Francis. It contains a prophecy of the number of popes until Jesus returns as well as a description of the characteristics of each pope. So, why does this matter? How many popes are on the list? What about the reign of the last pope? Are there any similarities between Malachy’s description of the last pope on his list and the prophecies in the Bible? Does the Antichrist fit in to Malachy’s list? Is it possible that Malachy’s list actually predicts the final judgment and the return of Christ in 2027? These questions are fascinating and provocative. Let Dr. Thiel shine the light of Bible prophecy on the answers to these questions. Answers from the verses of the Bible that bring prophecy to life.

The old Worldwide Church of God wrote the following related to the Malachy prophesies:
For your interest (or for whatever else it may be worth), an old Irish Catholic prophecy of the 12th Century predicts that there will be 265 popes before “the end of the world.” Pope John Paul I is number 263. The last, pope, according to this prophecy of “Malachy,” an old Irish bishop, is to take the name “Peter the Roman.” Time will have to judge the prophecy’s accuracy. (Hogberg G. A LOOK AT THE NEW ROMAN PONTIFF. Pastor General’s Report. August 29, 1978)
Gene Hogberg was off slightly. There were to be 266 pontiffs, not supposedly 265.
Technically, Pope Francis was 266 on that list–however, 1) it has long been held that there could be pontiffs between 265 and the final one and 2) because Benedict XVI was alive when Francis was voted in, some say he did not count.
Regarding the next pope matter, Michael Snyder posted the following:
What Should We Make Of The Rampant Speculation That The Next Pope Could Be The Last Pope?
The death of Pope Francis has created a firestorm of speculation about the next pope. There is no clear frontrunner, and all sorts of names are being thrown around. Many liberal Catholics are hoping for another liberal pope that will be able to continue the legacy of Francis, while many conservative Catholics are desperate for a conservative pope that will move the Vatican in a very different direction. Meanwhile, a controversial document that was discovered in the Vatican archives in the sixteenth century known as “the Prophecy of the Popes” is getting a ton of attention on social media. Many are suggesting that the pope that will soon be elected will actually be the last pope before the return of Christ. …
Francis publicly declared that all religions “are paths to God” during a visit to Singapore…
“All religions are paths to God. I will use an analogy, they are like different languages that express the divine,” Francis said during a September trip to Singapore. “But God is for everyone, and therefore, we are all God’s children.”
Francis broke with traditional Catholic teaching in many other areas as well. …
There are many that are speculating that one of the three candidates named “Peter” will win because that would fit “the Prophecy of the Popes”.
“The Prophecy of the Popes” was supposedly written by St. Malachy in the twelfth century, and it was supposedly “discovered” in the Vatican archives in the sixteenth century by a Benedictine monk named Arnold Wion…
The “Prophecy of the Popes” (Latin: Prophetia Sancti Malachiae Archiepiscopi, de Summis Pontificibus) was discovered in 1590 by Benedictine monk Arnold Wion and is kept in the Vatican Secret Archives. This work describes 112 cryptic mottos in Latin, each relating to succeeding popes, starting with Celestine II.
This list supposedly describes all of the popes that will reign until the return of Christ. …
What we do know is that we really are living in the end times, and so it is entirely possible that the next pope could be the last pope. 04/21/25 https://endoftheamericandream.com/what-should-we-make-of-the-rampant-speculation-that-the-next-pope-could-be-the-last-pope/
Here is something from my book The Last Pope: Do Biblical and Catholic Prophecies Point to Pope Francis? Amazon Book:
The Bible Identifies that the Antichrist Will Perform Signs and Lying Wonders
In the final end times, the Bible shows that there will be signs and lying wonders. These signs will be performed by the False Prophet and some may also appear to be performed by the Beast of the Sea of Revelation 13:1-9 (cf. Daniel 8:24).
Notice some passages that many theologians (Catholic or otherwise) believe are related to the final Antichrist:
8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thessalonians 2:8-12)
11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. (Revelation 13:11-17)
If Pope Francis I does not perform signs and wonders and never calls fire down from heaven, then he is not the final Antichrist and would not be the last Pontifex Maximus.
Could Francis’ successor be the last pope?
If he ends up doing various signs and lying wonders, yes. If not, no.
And if he does, yes, he will be terrifying.
The final pontiff will support the coming European Beast. He will be the two-horned beast of Revelation 13:
That will be terrifying as terror will be one of the weapons of the last pope.
