Islamic State persecuting those it considers to be ‘Nazarenes’

The Islamic State has been marking the homes of those it considers to be ‘Nazarenes’:

Islamic State soldiers go through communities and mark the homes of Christians with a large letter “N” to symbolize “Nazarene,” as in Jesus the Nazarene. It is reminiscent of some of the most barbaric campaigns of genocide in history, including that of Jews in Nazi Germany. …

“The question is: Why doesn’t the world react? There has been a tremendous focus on Israel when it defended itself, as any country would, when thousands of rockets were fired on it by terrorists, but not a word for the thousands of Christians in Iraq, Syria and the Middle East.” Part of that answer is that the Obama administration seldom speaks of religious persecution when discussing the need for military action in Iraq and Syria, even though the president took commendable action recently to rescue members of the Yazidi sect who were threatened with annihilation. This is certainly reminiscent of what happened to Jews in Germany and elsewhere during WWII.

While the Islamic State is marking the homes of the Greco-Romans in the areas they control, in the future, the Bible indicates that the Greco-Romans will themselves persecute those who hold original ‘Nazarene’ beliefs and practices (see Persecutions by Church and State).

Over five years ago, I started a small publishing company named Nazarene Books. While some now are calling themselves Nazarenes in solidarity with those being affected by the Islamic State, in the fourth and fifth centuries the term was derisively applied to those who kept Church of God doctrines such as the Sabbath and Holy Days.

Notice some of what the Greco-Roman saint Jerome wrote:

…God has given us the Law and the testimonies of scriptures.

…the believing Jews do well in observing the precepts of the law, i.e….keeping the Jewish Sabbath…there exists a sect among… the synagogues of the East, which is called the sect of the Minei, and is even now condemned by the Pharisees. The adherents to this sect are known commonly as Nazarenes; they believe in Christ the Son of God, born of, the Virgin Mary; and they say that He who suffered under Pontius Pilate and rose again, is the same as the one in whom we believe…a most pestilential heresy.

Perhaps it might be helpful to realize that Catholics do admit that the Nazarene Christians did observe the Feast of Tabernacles:

St. Jerome (PL 25, 1529 & 1536-7) speaking of how the Judaeo-Christians celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles…tells us that they gave the feast a millenarian significance (Bagatti, Bellarmino. Translated by Eugene Hoade. The Church from the Circumcision. Nihil obstat: Marcus Adinolfi. Imprimi potest: Herminius Roncari. Imprimatur: +Albertus Gori, die 26 Junii 1970. Franciscan Printing Press, Jerusalem, p.202).

Most Church of God groups with origins in the old WCG, like the Continuing Church of God, still observe the Feast of Tabernacles and have other practices kept by the faithful among the Nazarenes.

Notice an interesting, but highly important, observation by the Catholic priest Bagatti:

In conclusion, regarding the Nazarenes, both St. Epiphanius and St. Jerome have nothing to condemn them for except the observance of customs forbidden by the Councils.

And that is a major difference between the true Church of God and the Greco-Romans (and their Protestant offspring)— the Greco-Romans accept some of the Councils as authoritative (they are selective as some contradict others) and we in the true Church of God never have.

What the Islamic State is doing is wrong. Yet, the time will come when the Greco-Romans will implement massive persecution against the true saints (Daniel 7:25).

Yet, because most do not know the truth about church history, they will not realize that they will be persecuting the true Christians (check out also Continuing History of the Church of God and Where is the True Christian Church Today?).
