Pope Benedict Says the Dragon Uses Terror & Violence Against the Defenseless

                                  Pope Benedict XVI

The following news item was of doctrinal interest:

Consumerism, hedonism will be defeated by God’s love, pope says

Catholic News Service – August 15, 2007

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy (CNS) — The seemingly invincible ideologies of consumerism and hedonism and the reign of violence and terror will all be defeated by God’s love, Pope Benedict XVI said…

Giving his homily without using a text or notes, the pope said that according to St. Augustine, human history has been driven by a struggle between two kinds of love: love for God in which one “loses oneself and gives oneself” totally to him and loving oneself to “the point of disparaging God and hating others.”Pope Benedict said this selfish love versus true love can be seen in the two images present in the feast day’s first reading from the Book of Revelation, an account of the encounter between the powerful dragon and the defenseless woman. The dragon, he said, represents “power without mercy, without love, of absolute selfishness, terror, violence” as well as all “materialistic dictatorships” throughout history, including the Nazi and Stalinist regimes.“Even today the dragon exists in new and different ways,” he said…But, “nonetheless, we know that in the end the defenseless woman won” the battle against the dragon, signaling the victory of God’s love, he said. The woman clothed with the sun and with the moon under her feet represents the Mary “living totally in God … penetrated by the light of God” and conquering death, said the pope.

Throughout history, who has been defenseless and who has acted like a dragon/beast?  The Roman Catholic Church who has been the persecutor or the Church of God who has been among the persecuted?

Perhaps it should be noted that while the Roman Catholic Church understands that early Christians did not participate in military service, the Roman Catholic Church now holds a different position on that (and other matters).

The forces of evil will be defeated by Jesus Christ who will come as King of Kings and Lord of Lords and will reign for 1,000 years and then will reign forever.

Jehovah’s Witnesses: Jesus is Michael

Building

COGwriter

After posting about COG and Jehovah’s Witnesses Doctrinal Similarities, some wrote me to tell me that there were a lot of dissimilarities between the COGs and the JWs.  And this I knew as many were documented then (and now) in the article Similarities and Differences Between the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Churches of God.

However, perhaps the biggest difference that these people brought up to tell me (as they had not read my article Similarities and Differences Between the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Churches of God ) was that the Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that the angel Michael is the one who became Jesus the Christ.

Here are some excerpts from my article Similarities and Differences Between the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Churches of God:

Jehovah’s Witnesses Teach Jesus is Michael and Not God

The Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that

Michael is a name given to Jesus in his role as a heavenly Ruler (Pay Attention. p. 289).

The COGs believe that Michael is simply an archangel.

Here is more about what they teach about Michael:

The foremost angel, both in power and authority, is the archangel, Jesus Christ, also called Michael. (1 Thessalonians 4:16; Jude 9) Under his authority are seraphs, cherubs, and angels. (The Truth About Angels. Jehovah’s Witnesses Official Web Site. Appeared in The Watchtower November 1, 1995. http://www.watchtower.org/library/w/1995/11/1/article_02.htm 07/09/07)

The Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe that Jesus is God, but the COG does.

Here is one “proof” from the Jehovah’s Witnesses that they use to support their unitarian view of the Godhead:

John said that he had written his Gospel so that readers might come to believe that “Jesus is the Christ the Son of God”—not that he was God. (John 20:31) (WHO IS“the Only True God”? Awake! April 22, 2005).

Having read various writings from official Jehovah’s Witnesses sources, I have concluded that the Jehovah’s Witnesses’s correctly understand that the Father and Son are separate persons, but that they do not teach that Jesus is God or part of the Godhead.

Notice the following from one of their official websites:

Rather than proclaim himself to be God’s Son, Jesus allowed others to reach that conclusion…

Yet, some argue that Jesus is not simply the Son of God but that he is actually God himself. They say that he and his Father are both Almighty God. Are they correct? Is Jesus somehow part of God? Is that what Jesus, or any of the Bible writers, said? Really, who is the only true God? Who did Jesus say He is?…

(Acts 17:24, 31) Here the apostle Paul described Jesus as “a man”—yes, lesser than God—whom God had restored to life in heaven. The apostle John too described Jesus as subordinate to God. John said that he had written his Gospel so that readers might come to believe that “Jesus is the Christ the Son of God”—not that he was God. (John 20:31) (Is Jesus Christ God? http://www.watchtower.org/e/20050422/article_01.htm 070707).

Their belief that Jesus is not God seems to be tied to a couple of verses in John 17 which they mention and explain as follows:

In prayer with his apostles—only hours before his death—Jesus petitioned: “Father, the hour has come; glorify your son, that your son may glorify you. This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.”—John 17:1, 3.

Notice that Jesus prays to One whom he calls “the only true God.” He points to God’s superior position when he continues: “So now you, Father, glorify me alongside yourself with the glory that I had alongside you before the world was.” (John 17:5) Since Jesus prayed to God requesting to be alongside God, how could Jesus at the same time be “the only true God”? (WHO IS “the Only True God”? Awake!  April 22, 2005).

This, however, at most may suggest that Jesus was not fully God while on earth, which He was not. The Bible teaches that Jesus emptied Himself of His divinity while on earth (see Philippians 2:7), hence He had to have been divine before coming on earth (this is discussed in more detail in the article on binitarianism), and would be again after His resurrection. The above in no way is proof of unitarianism.

Legacy Starts 6th Year

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Lat night I received a letter from Leon Sexton of Legacy Institute.  He announced:

The school year at Legacy Institute has started again!  This is our SIXTH year!  I just can’t believe it. How time flies!

Legacy Institute is a small private school in Thailand.  Leon Sexton used to accompany Herbert W. Armstrong on trips to that part of the world, though Leon Sexton has at least two key doctrinal differences from HWA.

PCG: German Banks Severe Ties With Iran

Monday, August 13th, 2007

At its website, PCG reported:

German Banks Terminate Business With Iran

Germany severed major financial ties with Iran when Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank ended all contracts with Iran, reports Forbes.com…

Regardless of the reason, the banks’ pullout will probably affect Berlin’s trade relationship with Tehran in a big way. Germany had been one of Iran’s main trading partners. Without banks to finance such trade, the forecast for Iranian-German relationships in this sector is bleak.

Though the waters might have gotten too hot for German banks, Asian financiers are not so queasy. Chinese investors are eager to fill the void left by European banks, and some analysts believe this recent move will give China the upper hand in the future.

Germany distancing itself from Iran is only a precursor to the relations these two nations will have in the near future. To learn more about Iran and Germany, read our booklet. The King of the South.

PCG teaches, incorrectly, that Iran is the future King of the South.

Living University to Begin This Week

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

COGwriter

Living University is to begin this week.

LCG’s Dr. D. Winnail reported:

…more than 150 students are enrolled in Living University classes…

The first Living University classes will begin on Wednesday, August 15.  For those who still intend to register, please do so as soon as you can.

One hundred and fifty students is a fair amount for a brand-new university.

The website for Living University states:

  • Online orientation is August 13-14, 2007. Classes begin August 15. Registration and orientation may be completed online.

  • Late Registration is August 15-17. No additional registrations may be made after August 17.

I suspect that other Church groups may decide to try to follow LCG’s lead in this area.  I believe that what LCG is doing is innovative, bold, and highly cost-effective–for both the students and the Church.

LDS President Dies

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints reported:

President James E. Faust, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at his home early Friday morning surrounded by his family.

President Faust, 87, had served in the First Presidency since 1995 and as a General Authority of the Church for 35 years. A Church statement today said that President Faust had died of “causes incident to age.”

The funeral will be held on Tuesday in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Temple Square.

President Faust was appointed second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 12 March 1995. The First Presidency is the highest presiding body in the government of the Church…

He served as a member of the Utah Legislature from 1949 to 1951, as an advisor to the American Bar Journal, and president of the Utah Bar Association in 1962-1963…President John F. Kennedy appointed him to the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in 1962.

While this is not COG news per se, I noticed that many in the COGs have questions about the Mormons.

WCG Announces 35 Beliefs Book

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

TRANSFORMED FROM TRUTHWorldwide Church of God Transformed from Truth to Fairy Tales

My son Michael thought that the above picture could capture in humor what I believe has happened to the WCG. My wife Joyce coined the expression “Transformed from Truth” many years ago when she first heard of the book improperly titled “Transformed by Truth” by Joseph Tkach (Jr.).

Late yesterday in an email, the Worldwide Church of God (WCG) reported (my comments will remain in italics) the following:

2007 Conference of Elders – Comments From Participants – Interviews with men and women attending the international gathering of elders in Indian Wells, CA…

At the conference, elders received a book titled 35 Beliefs of the Worldwide Church of God. There is nothing new in the book—it is a compilation of articles on our website. If you would like this book as a book, you may download the files:

The documents title page states:

Thirty-Five Beliefs of the Worldwide Church of God

Edited by J. Michael Feazell, Michael Morrison, and Joseph Tkach

Copyright © 2007 Worldwide Church of God.

And the first few beliefs are:

1. The Triune God…
2. God the Father…
3. God the Son…
4. God the Holy Spirit…

Regarding Jesus, WCG made such statements as:

Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, fully God and fully human…

Our salvation depends on Jesus being both human and divine. But how can this be? How can someone infinite become finite? How can the holy Son of God become a human, in the likeness of sinful flesh? Our question comes mainly because the only humanity that we can see now is woefully corrupt…

No, the question does not come because the only humanity we see is woefully corrupt.  The question comes because the statement that Jesus was fully human and fully God at the same time is a logical impossibility. The fact is that although most mainstream groups that profess Christ cling to such false concepts of God, in order to do so, groups like WCG have to ignore scripture. The Bible teaches that Jesus EMPTIED HIMSELF of His divinity to be born of Mary.  And that AFTER the resurrection He was again fully God.

Binitarianism: One God, Two Beings Before the Beginning This is a shorter article than the Binitarian View article, but has a little more information on binitarianism.

Furthermore, here was another WCG belief:

19. The Christian Sabbath…

The Christian Sabbath is life in Jesus Christ, in whom every believer finds true rest. The weekly seventh-day Sabbath, which was enjoined upon Israel in the Ten Commandments, was a shadow that prefigured the true Reality to whom it pointed—our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…

The Sabbath commandment, along with all of the Mosaic law, ended with Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. To embrace it, or to try to reapply it in the form of a Sunday Sabbath, is to diminish God’s revelation of Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of his promises.

To believe that God commands Sabbath-keeping for Christians is to deprive ourselves of the full joy God wants us to have in Christ…

Sabbatarian theology works against the grace of God in Jesus Christ and the plain teaching of the Bible. The law of Moses, including the Sabbath commandment, was given to Israel and not to the church. Although Christians should feel free to gather for worship on any day of the week, we must not make the mistake of thinking there is any biblical reason for choosing Saturday above any other day.

Yes, WCG actually posted the above.  Essentially, they are teaching that somehow the Jews who kept the Sabbath were being pointed to the reality of life in Jesus when they kept it, so no one else ever needs to.  They also teach, improperly, that the Sabbath deprives us of the joy God wants us to have (ignoring that the Bible teaches that the Sabbath is a blessing for those to whom salvation comes, see Isaiah 56:1-2).

Furthermore, this misunderstanding of Colossians 2:16-17 and Hebrews 4 has been dealt with by various COGs (UCG did a decent job of it in ones of its most recent booklets).  I have also attempted to deal with it in an article that discusses some of WCG’s improper logic in the articles:

Is There “An Annual Worship Calendar” In the Bible? This paper provides a biblical and historical critique of several articles such as one by WCG which states that this should be a local decision.
The Sabbath in the Early Church and Abroad Was the seventh-day (Saturday) Sabbath observed by the apostolic and post-apostolic Church?

Another belief was:

24. Baptism…

It is not our practice to baptize infants or children too young to express faith for themselves, since we understand baptism to be an expression of faith, and no one can be saved by their parents’ faith. We do not, however, condemn as unchristian those who do practice infant baptism.

Also WCG admits that baptism is an expression of faith that infants are to young to express, yet baptizing them any way is not unchristian.  This is another obvious instance where attempting to fit in with the world’s churches has once again overridden truth and logic.  An article of possibly related interest may be Baptism and the Early Church.

The above, though, is consistent with several “beliefs” in the booklet–WCG on many matters takes two sides (or more specifically refuses to take one side or the other) .

Notice from beliefs 32,33,34, and 35:

32…The Bible teaches that unrepentant sinners will suffer the second death in the lake of fire, but it does not make absolutely clear whether this means annihilation or conscious spiritual alienation from God…

33…In a vision, John saw God’s presence eventually coming to earth—not the present earth, but a “new earth” (Revelation 21:3). Whether we “go” to heaven, or it “comes” to us, is of no consequence…

34…Some passages suggest a conscious intermediate state, and others an unconscious state. The Worldwide Church of God believes both views should be respected…

35…Two views of the millenium

F

or many Christians, the millennium is a very important doctrine, a wonderful message of good news. But we do not stress the millennium. Why? Because we base our teachings on the Bible, and the Bible is not as clear on this topic as some people think it is.

Those interested in more clarity on that last topic may wish to read the article Did The Early Church Millenarianism?

In a major departure from Church of God (COG) teachings,  the WCG book essentially admits that Roman Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox represented the true Christian Church.

How?

It calls three documents that they came up with “Historical Documents of the Christian Church”.  Here are some of their comments on three of them:

At the request of Emperor Constantine, Christian bishops from across the Roman Empire met at the town of Nicea in 325 to discuss the matter. They wrote their consensus in the form of a creed, called the Creed of Nicea. In 381 another major council was held at Constantinople at which the Creed of Nicea was slightly revised to include a few more doctrines. The resulting Creed is called the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, or more commonly, the Nicene Creed.

In the next century, church leaders met in the city of Chalcedon to discuss, among other things, questions about the divine and human natures of Jesus Christ. The result was a Definition of Faith they believed to be true to the gospel, true to apostolic teaching, and true to the Scriptures. This statement is called the Definition of Chalcedon or the Faith of Chalcedon…

Church fathers Tertullian, Augustine, and other leaders had slightly different versions of the Apostles’ Creed, but the text of Pirminius in A.D. 750 was eventually accepted as the standard form.

WCG then, in essence, is admitting what the Roman Catholics teach, which is that the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox were the true Christian Church in the fourth through eighth centuries (and by implication, beyond that).  Since WCG admits that, it really has little excuse for not being part of them.

Those interested in the truth about early Christianity, where the Church was, and a lot of what it believed, should read, pray about, and study the following articles:

History of Early Christianity Are you aware that what most people believe is not what truly happened to the true Christian church?

Do you know which group is most faithful to the teachings of the apostolic church? This documented article answers those questions.
Some Similarities and Differences Between the Orthodox Church and the Churches of God Both groups have some amazing similarities and some major differences. Do you know what they are?

Not every belief in WCG’s new book was wrong.  Some that they mention are held by both mainstream and COG groups.

However, another belief (#31) was:

31…It is the belief of the Worldwide Church of God that in Christ the Lord makes gracious and just provision for all, even for those who at death appear not to have believed the gospel.

Finally, WCG has held on to at least one belief that most Roman Catholics and Protestants do not share–it is actually a belief that is condemned by most Catholics and Protestants.

Yet, this is a belief that is essentially a COG belief, as well to a lessor degree, a belief of the Eastern Orthodox.  And it is an extremely important belief.

It is the belief that, in my opinion, best explains how God is a God of love and how come His plan is one of love.

Hope of Salvation: How the COGs differ from most Protestants How the COGs differ from mainstream Protestants, is perhaps the question I am asked most by those without a COG background.

Anyway, WCG’s new book simply is a relatively easy way to see that it is not a COG, that it often prefers mainstream as opposed to biblical doctrines, and that it essentially believes that the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox did, in fact, represent the Christian Church from the time of Constantine until at least the early 8th century (and by inference, beyond that timeframe).

Perhaps I should point out that the new WCG book does not explain some of the first changes that WCG made.  An article of related interest may be Did You Know What the First Changes the Tkach Administration Made in WCG?

Orthodox Must Reject Unity with the Roman Catholics

Friday, August 10th, 2007

It is in the news again.  The current Pontiff Benedict XVI is trying to become closer with the Orthodox:

Meeting between Pope Benedict and Patriarch Alexy becoming more likely – Vatican official

Interfax – August 7, 2007

Moscow – A meeting between Pope Benedict XVI and Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II is becoming evermore likely, Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and Vice-Dean of the College of Cardinals said after a meeting with the Patriarch…

Orthodox believers and Catholics should hold a profound dialogue and the meeting between the Pope and Alexy II should express the profoundness of these relations, he said.Alexy II recognizes that many efforts have been made to improve interaction between the two Churches, he said.

The relations between the two Churches have become warmer, yet they have never been cold. Personal relations with the Patriarch are a good example for interaction between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, he said.

Patriarch Alexy’s address to the PACE session in Strasbourg scheduled for autumn will address the whole of Europe, he said. http://www.interfax-religion.com/?act=news&div=3442

While many applaud this, I believe that this closeness is dangerous.  The Vatican’s goal is dominance.

John Paul II

John Paul II stated that the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church were the “two lungs” of the Church.

The June-July 2007 edition of The Journal: News of the Churches of God contains an edited version of the following article:

Orthodox Should Reject Unity With Roman Catholics

By COGwriter

Most people in the Churches of God (COGs) know relatively little about the Eastern Orthodox Church (Orthodox).  Because the similarities of some of its practices with those of the Roman Catholic Church, recent pontiffs have attempted to take steps to attempt to restore unity between the two groups.  Yet few realize that the Orthodox have many teachings that have similarities to COG doctrines.

The Great Schism

In 1054, there was a separation of the Orthodox churches from the Roman Church.  Although many historians feel that political considerations played the deciding role, two main doctrinal reasons are cited for this separation, which the Orthodox refer to as “the great schism”.

The first was the authority of Roman bishop.  Essentially the Orthodox position was (and remains) that there were “five churches that comprised the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church before the Great Schism”.  These five were the Orthodox Churches of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem (the other Orthodox churches, like the Russian, Serbian, etc. all hold similar doctrinal positions, but simply are not considered to have the prestige of “original Apostolic authority” ), plus the Roman Catholic Church.

After Roman Pontiff Leo IX exceeded what the Orthodox considered to be his jurisdiction (he excommunicated Cerularius, the Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople, who in turn excommunicated Leo IX), the Orthodox felt that the Church of Rome separated from their communion and the two groups have been officially separated ever since.  This is something that recent pontiffs have attempted to change.

The second issue had to do with the “filioque clause” of the so-called Apostle’s Creed.  The Orthodox position is that the Romans changed the Creed to include the statement that the Holy Spirit proceeds “from the Father and the Son“, whereas it originally stated that the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father previously according to the Orthodox.

It may be interesting to note that Catholic scholars have claimed that the Orthodox have had no saints since the Great Schism.  Notice:

The Greek Church once brilliant with many saints produced no more saints after the schism…learned Greeks fled to western Europe bringing with them the culture of the decadent schismatic church and caused a partial return to paganism in the Renaissance period…The final result of the Greek Schism appears in Communism, which is a complete return to unbelief and barbarism (Kramer, Herman Bernard. The Book of Destiny. Nihil Obstat: J.S. Considine, O.P., Censor Deputatus. Imprimatur: +Joseph M. Mueller, D.D., Bishop of Sioux City, Iowa, January 26, 1956. Reprint TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1975, pp. 52-53).

It should be noted that the Greek Orthodox Church does not agree with the above and tend to be aghast when they learn of it.  Similarly, notice how the same Roman source indicates that the “scourge” of called Wormwood in Revelation 7:10-11 has to do with the Greek schism:

Verses 19 and 11

The scourge announced by the third trumpet…the idea if “WORMWOOD” indicates that the Third Scourge to be the GREEK SCHISM…It has carried away from Christendom approximately one third of the membership of the true Church.  Schism is not heresy but…As disobedience, it perverts the source of spiritual life into sources of spiritual death…

The description in the Apocalypse fits the Greek Schism in every detail (Kramer, Herman Bernard. The Book of Destiny. Nihil Obstat: J.S. Considine, O.P., Censor Deputatus. Imprimatur: +Joseph M. Mueller, D.D., Bishop of Sioux City, Iowa, January 26, 1956. Reprint TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1975, pp. 201,203,205).

The Orthodox do not believe that the schism carried their people away from Christendom.  But that is historically how many Catholic leaders have viewed the situation.

But What About the Church of God?

Possibly because the Orthodox tend to rely more on Greek writings (the New Testament and nearly all of the early Christian writings were in Greek) and not Latin, plus the fact that its leading Patriarchate (Constantinople) is in Asia Minor, the Orthodox have many doctrines that the Roman Catholic Church does not teach, but that the COGs generally do teach.

What are the differences between the Orthodox and the Catholics?  What are the similarities between the Living Church of God and the Orthodox?

Here are twelve such doctrines:

1. The Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, reject the Roman Catholic notion of purgatory.

2. The Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, number the ten commandments as they originally were and not as the Roman Catholics number them.

3. Many (though not all) of the Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, believe that God has a plan of salvation that can occur at the time of the final judgment.  Yet, the Roman Church rejects the idea that salvation can be available after the first death.

4. The Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, do not believe that God’s plan will result in most being lost or that it is a plan of terrorism.  This differs from the Roman Catholic view of eternal torment.

5. The Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, believe in baptism by immersion.  The Roman Catholics usually employ sprinkling.

6. The Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, believe in “the responsible use of contraception within marriage”.  The Roman Catholic position is far more limiting.

7. The Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, reject “the dogma of the immaculate conception of the Virgin”.  That is a Roman Catholic dogma.

8. The Eastern Orthodox, like many in the Church of God, agree that “the final goal at which every Christian must attain: to become god”.  The Roman Catholic teaching in this area is less than clear.

9. The Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, teach that presbyters (which they call “priests” but the COG calls “elders”) can be married.  The Roman Church requires celibacy for all presbyters, even though that was not its original position.

10. The Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, teach that “Christians must always be ‘People of the Book’ “.  Yet, throughout history, the Church of Rome has tended to place more emphasis on non-biblical sources for much of its doctrines.

11. The Eastern Orthodox, like the Church of God, do not observe Ash Wednesday.  The Church of Rome added this observance in the Middle Ages from non-biblical sources.

12. Neither the Living Church of God nor the Orthodox believe that the jurisdiction of Rome has any real bearing on apostolic succession.Yet, the Roman Church has officially claimed that apostolic succession was lost by the Orthodox and others when they stopped accepting the jurisdiction of Rome:

Regarding the Greek Church, it is sufficient to note that it lost Apostolic succession by withdrawing from the jurisdiction of the lawful successors of St. Peter in the See of Rome. The same is to be said of the Anglican claims to continuity (O’Reilly, Thomas. “Apostolicity.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 1. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1907).

While there are certain ceremonial similarities (as well as differences) between the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, if the Orthodox really wish to become “the people of the book” they need to reject all non-biblical doctrines and not enter into greater unity with Rome.  There are too many differences in doctrine between the Catholics and the Orthodox for unity without major compromise.

The Romans Now Want the Orthodox

The current Roman Pontiff (Benedict XVI) has repeatedly stated that he wants unification with the Orthodox Churches (e.g. Pope tells Cypriot Orthodox leader he holds ‘firm hope’ for Christian unity. Associated Press – June 16, 2007) and certain Orthodox leaders seem to favor it (e.g. Alexy II Favors Ecumenical Ties: Says Orthodox-Catholic Partnership Is Important. Zenit – June 15, 2007).  The previous pontiff (John-Paul II) referred to the Romans and the Orthodox as the “two lungs” of the church.

However, the Orthodox may wish to be aware of a Catholic prophecy concerning this.  Around 1202 the Catholic Abbott Joachim prophesied:

A remarkable Pope will be seated on the pontifical throne, under special protection of the angels. Holy and full of gentleness, he shall undo all wrong, he shall recover the states of the Church, and reunite the exiled temporal powers. As the only Pastor, he shall reunite the Eastern to the Western Church…This holy Pope shall be both pastor and reformer. Through him the East and West shall be in ever lasting concord. The city of Babylon shall then be the head and guide of the world.

Rome, weakened in temporal power, shall forever preserve her spiritual dominion, and shall enjoy great peace…(Cited in Connor, Edward. Prophecy for Today. Imprimatur + A.J. Willinger, Bishop of Manterey-Fresno. Tan Books and Publishers, Rockford (IL), 1984, pp. 31-32).

Biblical prophecy states that there will be a major unifying religion that it calls “Babylon the Great” (Revelation 17:5)–but one that the Bible warns against.Catholic-Orthodox unity will not be good for either group.

The Orthodox (and all others) need to heed the Bible and:

“Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.  For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities” (Revelation 18:4-5).

The Orthodox, individually, need to reject unity with Rome.  Orthodox-Catholic unity will not be a good thing.

The plain truth is that if those in the Orthodox churches will study their Bibles, they will find a lot more doctrines that the Bible and the COGs hold in common than they will in the Bible and the Roman Church.  On the unification issue, nearly all of the American and South African Orthodox members I have had contact with oppose unity with Rome.  Yet, much of the Orthodox clergy in other areas seem to support it.

The fact that the COGs and the Orthodox trace their histories through cities other than Rome is also something that the two groups have in common.

Furthermore, if they look into their roots, the Orthodox will also find that the VAST MAJORITY of professing Christians in Asia Minor (an area where the Orthodox also trace their history) did not even accept the Trinitarian doctrine until the latter half of the fourth century, because they held a Semi-Arian view of the Godhead (the view that the Father and Son are both God, but that the Holy Spirit is not) similar to that held by most COGs.

Why It Matters

Truth is important. And sadly, many will be misled in the future with what the Bible calls signs and lying wonders.

Notice what one Orthodox writer has wisely warned against:

Peter Jackson (20th century): To which Mary are Muslims and Protestants being drawn?… Rome began to see her more and more as a “goddess,” a fourth Hypostasis of the Trinity…Today, as heterodox Christians become more and more ecumenist and work toward creating a “One World Church,” the search has begun for a Mary of universal recognition, one who will appeal not only to those who bear the name Christian, but apparently to Muslims and others as well, just as attempts are likewise being made to identify the “new Christ” with the Muslim concept of their coming Mahdi and with the Messiah still awaited by the Jews. This, of course, will be no Christ at all but the antichrist (Jackson P. ORTHODOX LIFE., No. I, 1997., Brotherhood of Saint Job of Pochaev at Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville, N.Y. pp. 18-22.  http://fr-d-serfes.org/orthodox/theotokos.htm viewed 05/04/09).

The time of Antichrist is near (please see Does God Have a 6,000 Year Plan? What Year Does the 6,000 Years End?).  Neither the Orthodox nor the Catholics of Rome should follow apparitions that claim to be Mary (see Mary, the Mother of Jesus and the Apparitions) for false unity.

While most of us in the COGs recognize that there will be massive religious unity with some form of Catholicism at the time of the end, we need to be getting the warning message out to as many who will listen.  And that certainly should include trying to reach as many of the 250,000,000 people who claim ties to the Orthodox churches.By recognizing that there actually are some doctrinal and historical similarities between the groups, I believe that those of us in the COGs will be better able to explain our positions in a manner that people like the Orthodox will better be able to relate to. Since the recent overtures by the Roman Pontiffs will give some within the Orthodox churches reason to consider their affiliation, I believe this is an excellent time to try to reach them.

Perhaps I should also mention that the Orthodox, like the Churches of God, do not accept the Protestant teaching about being “born-again” nor eternal tormenting.

CEM and the Iraq War

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

In his latest commentary, CEM’s Ronald Dart posted:

A report appeared in the Associated Press this week that gave a pretty fair summary of the situation in Iraq, but at the same time, it underlines a very common fault of modern journalism: It blurs the line between news and opinion.  Nevertheless, the author acknowledges what I have long suspected:

<>“The idea, after all, is not to kill or capture every terrorist and insurgent. That can’t be done. The idea is to create a security environment more favorable to political action by the government, to provide breathing space for leaders of rival factions to work out a peaceful way to share power. The U.S. military, partnering in many instances with Iraqi forces, is now creating that security cushion—not everywhere, but in much of the north, the west and most importantly in key areas of Baghdad. “

This seems to be overlooked in a lot of commentary on the war. Complaining that the Iraqi government hasn’t made any progress is the current tack of the anti-war left. But given enough time to improve security, the military may give the Iraqis breathing room to make the political compromises they are going to have to make.

What Ron Dart wrote may well be correct.

However, I believe that what is most likely to happen is something that is more consistent with a position by the late John Ogwyn (of LCG). Several years back, he stated in a commentary titled What Lies Ahead for Iraq?:

You see, Iraq has three roughly defined regions developing on their own paths. The south is under the sway of Shiite Muslim clerics, many of whom want to form an Islamic state. The Sunni Muslims in the center are increasingly influenced by members of the former regime—many of them Arab nationalists. And in the north there is the desire for Kurdish autonomy at the very least—and, most likely, Kurdish independence. In fact, the longer an effective central government is delayed, the longer the country’s three regions will continue on their diverging trajectories. Some have called this “the calm before the storm.”
Now, my friends, did you realize this is actually mentioned in Bible prophecy? It’s interesting when you look in the book of Revelation, chapter 9, as well as Revelation chapter 16, and you find that the Euphrates River plays a major part in future prophecies. Anciently, the Euphrates River was the boundary between the Parthian Empire to the east and the Roman Empire to the west. That was the state of things in the first century when John was writing. Today, if you look at a map, the Euphrates River isn’t a boundary between anything. It just sort of goes down through the middle of Iraq. Yet in Revelation 9:14, we are told that when the sixth trumpet blows, the angels that have been bound in the great River Euphrates are loosed. And in Revelation 16, we find that when the sixth vial is poured out, the River Euphrates is dried up and the kings of the east move across—indicating that the Euphrates is a boundary between east and west.
My friends, if you look at a map and you look these three ethnic groups, you realize that as Iraq moves toward disintegration into three major components, you will find that the Euphrates River is going to emerge as a boundary. That is the natural boundary there, and very likely we are going to see, in the time ahead, the disintegration of Iraq—and ultimately the emergence of the Euphrates River as a prominent boundary just as indicated in the book of Revelation.
What’s going on in today’s world news is setting the stage for the final fulfillment of Bible prophecy.

And I believe that events will prove John Ogwyn correct.

China threatens ‘nuclear option’ of dollar sales

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

Last Updated: 9:54am BST 08/08/2007

The Chinese government has begun a concerted campaign of economic threats against the United States, hinting that it may liquidate its vast holding of US treasuries if Washington imposes trade sanctions to force a yuan revaluation.

  • Blog – Dollar to collapse?
  • Two officials at leading Communist Party bodies have given interviews in recent days warning – for the first time – that Beijing may use its $1.33 trillion (£658bn) of foreign reserves as a political weapon to counter pressure from the US Congress.

Shifts in Chinese policy are often announced through key think tanks and academies.

Described as China’s “nuclear option” in the state media, such action could trigger a dollar crash at a time when the US currency is already breaking down through historic support levels.

It would also cause a spike in US bond yields, hammering the US housing market and perhaps tipping the economy into recession. It is estimated that China holds over $900bn in a mix of US bonds.

Xia Bin, finance chief at the Development Research Centre (which has cabinet rank), kicked off what now appears to be government policy with a comment last week that Beijing’s foreign reserves should be used as a “bargaining chip” in talks with the US…

Simon Derrick, a currency strategist at the Bank of New York Mellon, said the comments were a message to the US Senate as Capitol Hill prepares legislation for the Autumn session.

“The words are alarming and unambiguous. This carries a clear political threat and could have very serious consequences at a time when the credit markets are already afraid of contagion from the subprime troubles,” he said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2007/08/07/bcnchina107a.xml

While I do not believe that China will dump its dollar holdings at this time, I have long felt that China’s US dollar reserves will be a factor in its goal of having closer unity with Taiwan.

Irrespective of the role that China may play in the future regarding the US dollar, eventually, if my understanding of Old Testament prophecy in this area is correct, the US dollar will collapse.

Here are two scriptures that support this view from Habakkuk 2:

6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him,
And a taunting riddle against him, and say,
    ‘Woe to him who increases
    What is not his–how long?
And to him who loads himself with many pledges’?
7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly?
Will they not awaken who oppress you?
And you will become their booty.
