COGs, Military Service, and Veteran’s Day

Monday, November 12th, 2007

There were riots in Rome yesterday over a soccer incident–violence seems not to know any boundaries.

By COGwriter

Today is a day off for most Americans.  It is called Veteran’s Day–a day to remember those who served in the military.

FWIW, I happen to be a veteran myself as I served four years in the US military.

The historical position of the true Christian Church is that its members do not become part of the military, and if they are in for some reason, that they “do violence to no man” (Luke 3:14, KJV).

However, since the break-up of the old WCG, some relative few affiliated with the COGs have changed and believe it is acceptable for true Christians to be part of the military and kill others.

Furthermore, some of these few are somewhat vocal.  And some seem to wish to poke fun at those of us who hold to the original Christian teachings on this matter.

The Journal: New of the Churches of God sent out an email today with a listing of some articles that came out in its last issue (which was about two or so months ago).  The headline of one was:

Are there CO hawks in the Churches of God?

By Wes White

The satirical article basically hints that many in the COGs advocate military intervention, but we hold to a pacifist position because we are afraid that we or our children may be hurt in war.  The term “hypocrite” seems to be used to describe those that Wes White feels are “chicken hawks” (those who favor military intervention, but are afraid to participate in the military).

While there are hypocrites pretty much everywhere, those of us who hold to actual Christian teachings know full well that we hold to them because we believe that the Bible teaches them.  The fact that many in the COGs understand why governments will intervene militarily neither makes us “hawks” (war-mongers) nor “chickens” (pacifists due to cowardice).

Actually, while those unrepentant who break the commandment against killing will not be in the Kingdom of God (Revelation 22:15), neither will the “cowardly” (Revelation 21:8).

It is not cowardice to stand up for true Christian teachings–even if people call us names that imply it.

As far as Veteran’s Day itself, we in the COGs, even though we are pacifists, do respect the fact that many have made the ultimate physical sacrifice for their own ideas of duty or some other calling.  But we do not advocate carnal warfare and do not believe that true Christians should be part of the military in this age as Jesus taught in John 18:36.

Legacy, the Feast, and Burma

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Though the 2007 Feast of Tabernacles is long past, the October 2007 letter from Legacy Institute arrived two nights ago (it always takes a while).  I had intended to post something about the situation in Myan Mar (formerly Burma) before, so thought this would be a good time to post something now.  In his letter, Leon Sexton wrote:

The Feast of Tabernacles 2007 was over way too soon! I commented in my sermon on the Last Great Day that we wish we could extend it an extra week! In Chiang Mai we had over 50 attendees from Burma, Laos, Thailand, Canada, Australia, USA, and even two of our former volunteer Legacy teachers.

Just before the Feast started, the Burmese military government, without any warning, raised the price of oil and gas to over 4 times what it was. The people in the main cities were unable to use the buses to get to work because the bus companies couldn’t afford the fuel to operate! This draconian move by the ruling junta created an unacceptable strain on people who were already under incredible financial stress. The people were forced over the boiling point and they hit the streets in massive protests…

the military government became very concerned. They reacted by sending in the army and police who began beating and shooting Buddhist clergy and lay persons alike!

Even a famous Japanese journalist was shot dead point blank!

How many died or were arrested and hauled away – there can be no clear tally. The international community is talking a lot but will do very little to punish the actions of this rogue government.

As far as we can know, our COG brethren are safe. Communications via email and telephone were cut off for a few days during the height of the street protests. Now communication is back to normal. Most of our COG brethren live in the countryside away from the large cities, so they were not as affected by the protests and the subsequent government crackdown as much as those who live in Rangoon. However, all ARE affected by the fuel price hikes. Prices for food and other commodities have doubled.

Travel costs have doubled and even tripled! This will only create added financial burden on people who are already struggling just for daily bread.

Related to Myan Mar, LCG earlier reported:

The Feast in Myanmar

We are happy to report that brethren in the Living Church of God in Myanmar were able to keep the Feast without disruption, despite the violence occurring there during the Feast this year.  As our minister from Myanmar, Thomas Tial Hoe, wrote, the 75 brethren “rejoiced before God keeping His Feast for eight joyous days, dwelt together, ate together in unity and love and experienced a foretaste of Tomorrow’s World.  It was an inspiring, encouraging spiritual Feast as well as fine physical food and powerful sermons from Headquarters leaders.  Our heartfelt thanks to you all who help us to enjoy the Feast successfully.  We need your prayers…”

Comments by COGwriter

Myan Mar is one of the more difficult countries to live in in Asia (Cambodia and Laos are as well).  COG members there do need our prayers.  I believe that all 75 at the LCG Feast of Tabernacles site were Burmese.

LCG also has members in Haiti, which is probably the most difficult country in the Western hemisphere to live in (they just had a deadly storm there, see this week’s update from D. Winnail).

 They also need our prayers.

Barnabas: Visits Up

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

Barnabas Ministries, essentially an independent website not directly affiliated with a particular COG, announced:

On November 4th God blessed BibleStudy.org with its
two millionth visitor of the year!

God willing, the site will exceed 2006’s popularity in
less than two weeks.

2007 will mark BibleStudy.org’s  twelfth consecutive
year of increased popularity and ability to reach
the world with God’s truth.

Comments By COGwriter

Barnabas Ministries is ran by Alan Ruth who, personally, spent relatively little time in WCG.  Essentially the site is a collaborative effort of a dozen individuals who tend to oppose church governance.

It also has a lot of non-COG writings at the site (it latest announcement was of another non-COG book that would be available there).  Its internet presence is high by COG standards, though its effectiveness in terms of baptisms, for example, is limited.

FWIW, this is the 11th year for the COGwriter website and it has grown each year.  Visitors are up almost 50% this calendar year.

The websites of various COG groups can be found at the COGlinks page.

Ambassador Auditorium in the News

Friday, November 9th, 2007

Although it is no longer owned by any COG, those who were once affiliated with the old WCG were familiar with Ambassador Auditorium.  It was in the news today and actually has an event tomorrow:

Ambassador West needs new builder

Whittier Daily News, CA – Nov 9, 2007

PASADENA – Standard Pacific Homes has pulled out of the Ambassador West project, leaving developers Dorn Platz looking for another builder for 70 condominiums planned for the prime 19.72-acre site.

Dorn Platz President Greg Galletly was out of the office Thursday, but he confirmed through a spokeswoman that Standard Pacific has left the project and that the firm is looking for a replacement.

Ted McKibbin, president of Standard Pacific Homes in Orange County, did not return two calls for comment on why the company left the project.

Dorn Platz is the third developer in eight years to propose a project on part of the former Ambassador College campus.

The major feature of the complicated project, which was approved by the City Council in April, will be a six-story, 440,000-

square-foot Sunrise Senior Living complex, now the subject of an ongoing lawsuit filed by Harvest Rock Church.

The church, which owns and operates from the Ambassador Auditorium, claimed in its May 4 lawsuit that Dorn Platz illegally received city permission to build the 248 senior- and assisted-living units adjoining the Ambassador Auditorium because it encroached on church property. Both parties were involved in mediation in June, but did not reach agreement. Standard Pacific’s withdrawal from Ambassador West will have no effect on the project’s planning entitlements, said Darrell Cozen, senior planner with the city.  http://www.whittierdailynews.com/news/ci_7410548

Also notice:

Dvorák in America Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. CalPhil and Maestro Victor Vener perform with cellist Dennis Karmazyn. The California Philharmonic begins its 2007-2008 season concerts of classical music in Pasadena’s Ambassador Auditorium with an evening dedicated to the music Dvorák composed while living in the United States. The concert will include his most popular work, Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” and his Cello Concerto. Cal Phil’s principal cellist, Dennis Karmazyn will be the soloist. The concert is conducted by Victor Vener, Cal Phil’s music director.Tickets are $30 to $95. http://www.lacanadaonline.com/articles/2007/11/08/entertainment/lent-around1108.txt

Ambassador Auditorium is still a nice location for concerts.  It was sold off by the new WCG and the funds seemed to be used to help fund pension programs for those part of the new WCG.

COGaIC: Scholars Changing Perspective on Early Christian History

History of Early Christianity

Two days ago, COGaIC’s Peter Nathan posted the following:

The Context of Jesus Christ and His Followers

Dramatic Change in Perspective

“One of the biggest changes that’s happened in the scholarly world since I was introduced to it back in the 1970’s is the way that Judaism . . . is seen as the context of Christianity rather than as its contrast.” 44:18 Paula Fredriksen, “Sin: The Early History of the Idea: Lecture 1: God, Blood, and the Temple” October 9, 2007 — Spencer Trask Lecture, cosponsored by Princeton University Press.

Comments by COGwriter

The fact is that any interested in the truth of early Christianity need to realize that the early Christians were considered to have been a Jewish sect and had many practices that those who are associated with what passes for mainstream Christianity today would consider to be Jewish.

But it is true that, recently, some scholars have become more open-minded and are realizing this.  Sadly, I do not expect this to have much in the way of positive impact on the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, or Protestant churches.

But, since Paul taught, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phil 2:12), individuals can benefit from the truth about early Christianity.

PCG: Non-Contact Policy & Gerald Flurry Marking

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

COGwriter

Many have asked me about PCG’s cold harsh policy about contact with those that it considers to be Laodicean.

I received an email from from one who asked stated, for the purpose of this post, “identify me as Adrian D., a deacon with a young family that served the Milton, Ontario congregation”.  He provided me his last name at my request and I have not posted it at his request.  He is not with LCG and considers himself to be “independent” at this time.

He titled his report “Reign of Error”.  Since I am more concerned about the policy issue (as opposed to how PCG internally handles dissenting views of its members) and Adrian reported quite a bit, I am posting below his opinions of what happened from some of his Prologue, a July 2007 letter, and part of his resignation letter today as follows:

Prologue:

In December, 2005, Gerald Flurry, Pastor General of the Philadelphia Church of God (PCG), issued a surprising edict to all PCG members (see appendix) – they must immediately cut off relationships with all friends and family members who are or were members of the PCG’s parent church, the Worldwide Church of God (WCG), but who have not become members of the PCG. (The WCG was founded by the late Herbert W. Armstrong.) Gerald Flurry labels these people “Laodicean” based on his interpretation of Revelation 3:14-21…

My original study, dated December 2006, was submitted to the local minister, Fred Dattolo. In formulating a response, he sought the assistance of the Regional Director, Wayne Turgeon. Wayne Turgeon, in turn, sought the assistance of a number of other unidentified ministers and/or students to assist in the PCG’s official response. Their response was finally presented to me at the end of May, 2007. The reasoning presented in their official response was unsound and unscriptural. As the Regional Director was unable to provide an adequate answer to my question, in July 2007, I wrote directly to Gerald Flurry pointing out the problems in the reasoning and asking for clarification. I was told by Wayne Turgeon that I had “jumped the order” and that he would redirect my letter back down to Fred Dattolo and if he could not address it, only then would Wayne Turgeon forward it to Gerald Flurry. I reminded him that this was the same question I originally asked in December 2006, which both he and the local minister were unable to adequately answer. Within a week of submitting this letter requesting clarification, I was publicly suspended. (Suspension is supposed to be a private matter to allow an individual to sort through a personal problem without his or her reputation being tarnished.) Shortly after my public suspension, I was told …

I would not be permitted to attend the Feast of Tabernacles (an annual festival which all Church of God members attend in accordance with Leviticus 23:34)…

During the nine-month long process of trying to get an answer from the PCG ministry to a very simple question, I kept my question in the strictest confidence. I told no member in the PCG of these letters or the issue I had with Gerald Flurry’s ruling. On August 11th, 2007, I was publicly suspended for the question I raised. I interpret this public action as the PCG’s willingness to allow our conversation to continue in the public arena.

Sincerely,

Adrian D.

Clarification letter of July 7, 2007:

Mr. Gerald Flurry
Pastor General
Philadelphia Church of God

Dear Mr. Flurry:

Re: Policy to Cut Off Laodicean Parents

I am writing directly to you as it is clear to me that in responding to my Bible study, dated December 2006, strenuous efforts were made by the multiple authors to maintain anonymity. I am aware that, even though: i) the response was on blank paper rather than Philadelphia Church of God (PCG) letterhead; ii) the response was not signed by anyone; and iii) the response never references anyone by name; no correspondence of this nature would be released without your direct knowledge, participation and approval. I shall respect the desire for anonymity throughout this letter by referring to “the authors of the letter”, “one of the authors of the letter” and/or “the local minister”.

Based upon my review of your letter and my discussion with the local minister on May 30th,2007, I understand the Church’s official response to my question regarding your policy and the 5th commandment to be:

1. “Mr. Armstrong’s April 1980 Good News article entitled ‘When One is Disfellowshipped, Which Family Comes First’ is the bedrock of the policy not Matthew 10”.

2. “The key to the ruling is that Laodiceans have chosen to disfellowship themselves from the one true Church”;

3. “All Laodicean brethren choose not to fellowship with the PCG, consequently, they are demonstrating that
a. they don’t care about the truth and/or
b. they have a fundamental disagreement with the PCG”;

4. “If they are not supporting God’s man, they are in rebellion against God’s government”;

5. “Parents are not exempt from the decision to cut off people in rebellion against God’s government”;

6. The policy, “while it may cause pain, does not cause harm” and therefore does not violate God’s direction in Matthew 10:16 to be as harmless as a dove;

7. “The goal of the policy is not to coerce people into the PCG but to protect God’s sheep from Laodiceans”;

8. “Mr. Flurry has more of the Spirit than anyone else and thousands of people are praying for him. Therefore, we should have the faith to trust God’s government to do what is right”;

9. “Logic is subject to interpretation and so cannot be relied upon.”

10. I should “see the possibility that this might be right and just obey it”…

I am still open to being shown, from the scriptures with sound reasoning, how this policy does not violate God’s Law.

In Christian love and with all due respect,

Adrian D.

Resignation letter of 9/11/07:

Mr. Gerald Flurry
Pastor General
Philadelphia Church of God
PO Box 3700
Edmond, Oklahoma
USA 73083

Dear Mr. Flurry:

Re: Resignation from PCG

It has been one month since my suspension on August 11th, and it is clear to me from Mr. Fred Dattolo’s September 7th email barring me and my family from attending the upcoming Holy Day services, that my suspension is of an indefinite duration. I am also aware that local ministers do not have the authority to make such decisions. Suspending me for asking a question that you and your ministers are unable and/or unwilling to answer and then preventing me and my young family from attending the upcoming Holy Day services as a result of your inability is beyond hypocritical, it is indefensible…

I know it is discomforting for you that I will not accept intimidation or sloppy, unscriptural reasoning from you or your ministers…

As a deacon, I have worked closely enough with the ministry over the years to be fully aware that…he is paid to defend your opinions. In this email, he stated that I “disagree on a fundamental doctrine of the PCG, with its leader and with the brethren—a doctrine that has been thoroughly vetted and substantiated from the Scriptures.”

Clearly, he is confused. First, your policy is not a fundamental doctrine. The foundational doctrines of the PCG were established prior to your security crackdown. Second, it has not been thoroughly vetted and substantiated from the scriptures. That’s the whole point of the exchange we’ve had and that you have struggled with for the past nine months. You have been unable to substantiate your position with God’s word…

You are troubling the church by reigning with the error of Jeroboam and forcing God’s people to forsake His law. You have said repeatedly that we must test our leaders. Through this nine month process, I have tested you and found you wanting. You are long on coercion and short on scriptural reason…

In conclusion, to suspend me for asking a legitimate question, which you and your ministers struggle to answer, is beyond the pale. It reveals an underlying attitude of complete disrespect for God’s word and God’s people. As a result of this nine-month process, I am deeply disappointed in you and I have lost respect for you.

Rom 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

In accordance with Rom 16:17, it is my unfortunate duty to mark you as one which causes divisions (dichostasia) and offences contrary to the doctrine which I have learned. Please remove me from your membership list and all your subscription lists (i.e., The Philadelphia Trumpet, The Philadelphia News and the Royal Vision). I want nothing to do with the corruption that I have witnessed firsthand. I leave you with a final thought from Sir Winston Churchill:

“The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.”

Sincerely,

Adrian D.

Comments by COGwriter:

I could have told Adrian that he would ultimately be suspended by PCG for doing what he did as there is not proper scriptural justification for PCG’s harsh policy.  But of course, if he would have contacted me prior to his departure from PCG they may have put him out for that.

I do not know all the details about what happened.  I did contact Fred Dattalo who, while confirming the basic information (Adrian had problems with a PCG doctrine, objected to it, did not agree with how it was handled, and left PCG), he did not agree with how Adrian portrayed the specifics (he essentially seems to believe that PCG exercised proper concern, discretion, and governance in handling this and that Adrian has not).

For the record, Fred Dattalo told me the following concerning Adrian D’s Reign of Error packet (which I forwarded to him):

I’m not surprised by how you’ve chosen to portray Adrian’s submission and my response. However, since I spent an inordinate amount of time explaining this to you in detail, I would think, that in the interest of “accuracy,” since you are mentioning that you contacted me, you could at least add a couple very basic things…

Almost every time he quotes me, my words, as I said before, are distorted, twisted or recast in a different context. Consequently, a different understanding emerges—one that is dishonest. And by the way, I’m not saying he does all of this with malice aforethought…

And by the way, he was not suspended for asking questions about the Laodicean policy. As he himself admitted, he first submitted his questions eight months before he was suspended. So, how “accurate” and fair-minded are you going to be?

In response to Fred Dattalo’s comments to me, Adrian D. responded with the following:

I find it amusing that Fred Dattolo got permission from the highest levels in the PCG to break their own ruling and spend an ‘inordinate amount of time” conversing with you in detail. They are obviously running scared now that they’ve been exposed.  During my exchange with him, he never said anything was twisted or dishonest…

If they are so concerned about being quoted in context and “accuracy”, they should publish the anonymous letter, authored by multiple people, that Fred Dattolo read to me, but would not allow me to keep or take ‘verbatim’ notes on. That way, everything will be ‘in context’ and everyone can judge for themselves. To do otherwise is disingenuous.

More Comments by COGwriter:

Irrespective of the details in handling this particular case, the fact is that I believe that PCG often abuses authority and has many teachings that are beyond (and in several cases in contradiction) of what the Bible teaches or even allows.

I, of course, do not believe that PCG is part of the Philadelphia portion of the Church of God (an article of related interest may include Are the Laodiceans the Modern Sadducees and Pharisees?).

I do, however, specifically agree with Adrian that PCG’s non-contact policy is unbiblical, is in contradiction to the teachings of the old WCG, and is simply not nice.  However, as Adrian has learned, explaining this to PCG’s leadership will not change their position.

The following seem to be the main points in Adrian’s “Reign of Error”document (contact him directly if you want the document itself and PCG if you wish to hear their side):

1. What PCG’s policy actually is (the announced policy is available as a pdf link to PCG’s Non-Contact policy ).

2. That PCG’s policy is wrong.

3. That Adrian told PCG why he thought the policy was wrong.

4. PCG offered no real biblical proof that Adrian was wrong.

5. PCG suspended Adrian basically because they had no scriptural response.

6. PCG still feels that their policy is right.

7. PCG still has offered no legitimate biblical explanation for their policy.

Those who wish to see a pdf of PCG’s original December 2005 announcement of this odd policy can click on the following PCG’s Non-Contact Policy from its Pastor General’s Report.

While I believe that PCG’s policy has hurt PCG and made some of its non-biblical doctrines apparent to those within it that were unable to see it before, at this time I see no indication that PCG leaders view it that way.  The PCG approach to this and many other doctrines is simply opposed to biblical COG teachings.

Those truly interested in the truth about PCG’s teachings should see the pdf link to PCG’s Non-Contact policy as well as read the article Teachings Unique to the Philadelphia Church of God.

LCG: USA Playing a Dangerous Game with the Dollar

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Euro the Wind in Athens

The photo above is of an ancient carving of Euro who is supposed to be the southeast wind.  And now economic winds seem to be changing.

Yesterday, in his latest commentary titled Has the U.S. become a bad investment?, LCG’s Wallace Smith stated:

The U.S. has been playing a dangerous game with the dollar for quite some time. While constantly giving lip service to a belief in the benefit of a “strong dollar,” the U.S. has been allowing the dollar to slide further and further in value for its own benefit: making our goods cheaper for other countries to buy and making the debts we owe less painful to our balance sheets. We have been assuming for some time that the confidence of other nations in America as a good investment will keep our gamble on the safe side of disaster, allowing us to fiddle with the dollar as well.

As a nation, the United States has been counting on the utter desperation of other nations who want to see their heavy investment in America succeed to motivate them to continually prop us up in a vicious circle. Other nations do not want to see their enormous investment in the U.S.fail, so they continue to prop it up with – what else? – additional investments. As acclaimed author on economics, Gabor Steingart, puts in his book World War for Wealth:

“Dollars are bought so they don’t have to be sold. The dollar is strong because that’s the only thing that can prevent it from growing weak. Reality is ignored because only by ignoring it can the dream come true.”

However, just as Mr. Steingart warns, it is not inconceivable that a time will come when those other nations see the downside of propping up their investment fantasy as outweighing the upside, and they will cut their losses and run – especially if an option more viable that the U.S. comes along. Is the news today about a flight of foreign investors away from U.S. investments a sign that that unavoidable moment is around the corner? Time will tell.

America’s foolhardy willingness to rely on being propped up by faithful foreign “lovers” should remind us of the prophetic admonishment of Jeremiah 30:14, “All your lovers have forgotten you; they do not seek you; for I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of your iniquities, because your sins have increased.”

Actually, even if a return to a sound economy can be salvaged out of this thickening financial quagmire, there will come a time when “they will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be like refuse; their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord” (Ezekiel 7:19). Regardless of whether or not the U.S. is able to win this round of the dangerous game it is currently playing with its dollar and its foreign lovers, ultimately the solution is all about repentance from sin, not a strong dollar.  Click here to read more.

Nov 6, 2007 “The euro rose as high as $1.4571 against the dollar, according to Reuters data, its highest level since its 1999 launch.”  – Reuters

Comments by COGwriter

It is not just the Euro that is rising relative to the US dollar.

Gold is something like $830 US per ounce, silver about $15.50 an ounce, and oil around $95 per barrel, hence in some respects the value of the dollar has dropped close to 30% since the first of January.

Yesterday, the US Federal Reserve dropped interest rates again in an apparent attempt to prevent a collapse of the housing market, discourage imports, and encourage exports.  And while this dangerous move may help in the short run, it appears that since August 2007 that the USA has taken a lot of steps which are inflationary (which most likely will ultimately result in further reduction in the value/purchasing power of the US dollar).

We in the COGs tend to believe that the European Union, even though it will have various problems (some severe), will become the dominant economic force in the world and that the USA will collapse economically then be overtaken militarily.

Bible

By COGwriter

Do you really believe the Bible or traditions of men

If you are Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, etc. do you believe Jesus?

Notice what the Bible shows that Jesus taught:

28 “Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; 29 but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation” (Mark 3:28-29 NKJV).

What does this mean?  How does your church explain “all sins will be forgiven the sons of men“?

Two large chapter by chapter Protestant commentaries I checked with  (Matthew Henry’s and Wycliffe) say nothing about it at all.  The Annotations (commentary) to the Original Rheims’ New Testament (the Catholic accepted translation into English) also says nothing about it (nor the related verse in Matthew 12:31 at all).

However, when he was still called Joseph Ratzinger, the current Pope Benedict XVI taught that there is no salvation, hence no true forgiveness of sin, in the age to come (for documentation see the article Did The Early Church Millenarianism?).

The Protestant commentaries, however, make a limited comment that Jesus’ sacrifice is sufficient for nearly all sins (blaspheming the Holy Spirit, which they also do not seem to truly understand, excepted) when they discuss the same account in Matthew where Jesus is quoted as follows:

31 Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come (Matthew 12:31-32).

But again the Protestant commentators do seem to realize what Jesus is teaching.

However, did YOU notice that Jesus is actually teaching “every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men…in the age to come” (Matthew 12:31,32).

This is a teaching of the Church of God and to a lessor degree the Eastern Orthodox Church.  The Church of God teaches that this is associated with the Great White Throne Judgment for those who truly repent and accept Christ, while the Eastern Orthodox Church teach that it may or may not happen then.

Again, what does your church on this?  What should it teach on this?

Do you believe Jesus and the Bible?

CG7: Jesus and New Testament Leadership

Monday, November 5th, 2007

In the latest issue of its Bible Advocate magazine (October 2007), CG7’s Jason Overman wrote:

Becoming children

Jesus’ view of discipleship involved this very principle. His followers, like us, understood the politics of power according to the conventional wisdom: Power is the measure of status and wealth; it is the luxury and domain of the strong. But against the traditional view, the politics of Jesus points the other way. “The kingdom and the power” that He embodied and bid us enter, and for whose fullness we pray, is the habitation of little children (Matthew 18:1-4).

The desire to be greatest is a temptation common to pride, but Jesus did not say that disciples must forgo all thought of authority. Rather, He challenged the nature of that power. Typically, the heathen kings exercised power by dominating their subjects, but King Jesus inverted that policy. He was committed to the counter-cultural idea that the greatest in His kingdom is the younger that serves (Luke 22:24-27). Powerlessness reveals God’s true power.

The New Testament emphasis on power in weakness should not surprise anyone nursed on the stories of Israel. The accounts of Moses and Pharaoh, Joshua and Jericho, Gideon’s three hundred, David and Goliath, Daniel and the lions den, the fiery furnace — and so many more — give weight to the prophetic maxim “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6)…

For it is not strength or status or position or wealth that rightly reveals true power, but humble service that locates greatness in the costly gift of Christ crucified.

Let us confess with the apostle Paul, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes. . . .” It is the “exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe” (Romans 1:16; Ephesians 1:19). Amen.

And while I do not believe that CG7 itself truly understands governance, I do agree that church leaders need to follow after the teachings that Jesus established for them in the New Testament.

More comments by COGwriter:

I met with Dr. Germano (now President of Living University) last January when we were both in Charlotte and he was laying out the details on how LCG could have its own university.

I believe that he, his wife Brenda, and others associated with this project have done a fantastic job of making that dream a reality.  Especially in such a short time frame and with limited staff, etc.  And yes, there have been some of the normal “glitches” (I seem to run into my own computer glitches probably a couple of times a week and I have had the COGwriter website for over a decade now).

I believe that Living University will help fulfill the prayer that Jesus told us about when He taught us:

The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest (Matthew 9:37-38).

Which ones?

Well biblically it would appear to be those that:

… grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18 NKJV).

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV).

I strongly believe that shortly before the King of the North invades the United States and United Kingdom (and then or soon afterwards, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand), we in LCG will have been so successful in helping fulfill Matthew 24:14, that many of those who have studied at Living University will be used of God to assist those who have heard our message.  And that includes both men and women (regarding women, an article of possible interest may be Women and the New Testament Church ).

Do you wish to become part of those who may be laborers for Christs harvest?  If so, you may wish to consider Living University.
