Church of God (Seventh Day): “Does God Have a Plan for Your Life?”

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

In the December 2007 issue of CG7’s Now What? (a CG7 online magazine) there is an article by J. Grant Swank, Jr. (pastor of Windham Church of the Nazarene in Windham, ME) titled Does God Have a Plan for Your Life?

Here are perhaps the most relevant aspects of the article including its conclusion:

Does God have a plan for your life?

No — not if you do not will it. He permits you free will. When you activate free will for sin, self, and stupidity, the good God allows that due to His high regard for free will.

Does God have a plan for your life?

Yes — if you submit your free will to that plan. When you do, then Romans 8:28 kicks in, but not before: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (NIV).

When you do, you will His will. You pray for God to return to Eden control for you. At that point He does, but only because you have activated that permission by your free will.

As long as you maintain that absolute submission, God’s will overlays your all…

However, faith in the good God still concludes that my house being swept away by a hurricane will work for the kingdom’s good and my good, because God will see to it — if my life is submitted to the ultimate scenario and if I have willed His will for my life.

The same goes for a bullet in the back of the head? Right. Ask John the Baptist who lost his by sword. Then move on to countless martyrs. They too banked on that when tied to the stake.

Next, ask Jesus on the cross. He also banked on that as He obediently died on the cross.

And you?

Comments by COGwriter

CG7 should be cautious about promoting articles written by Protestants (an article of possible interest may be Hope of Salvation: How the COGs differ from most Protestants).

Not only does the above article never really explain the plan of God for one’s life, it seems to sound a bit like how Islam (which means “submission”) would answer the question about God’s plan for one’s life.

God is love.  His plan is one of love and His commandments show love.

Those interested in God’s plan for them personally should read the article What is the Meaning of Life?

Roderick C. Meredith: 21st Century Will Not Be The “Chinese Century”

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

COGwriter

China is in the international news a lot lately.  It massive economic growth is increasing its influence and even given it the ability to be able to at least economically injure the debt ridden USA.

And while the 21st century will not remain USA dominated, all is not quite perfect in China.

Notice the following news report:

China’s phenomenal economic growth has created a generation of “emperors” and “empresses”, the now-adult children of China’s one-child policy, who often put their needs before anything and anyone else.

Experts say many of this generation are unable to sustain relationships, a result of being spoiled only children, doted on by parents and grandparents who catered to their every whim…

China launched the controversial one-child policy in the early 1980s to curb its population, now over 1.3 billion. The restrictions, which vary from city to countryside, caused a variety of social problems such as a fast-aging society and a breakdown of family values which used to be based on the traditional Confucian ideal of a large and close family.http://features.us.reuters.com/cover/news/PEK332307.html.

China enforces its one child policy through tremendous pressure for abortion–a biblically prohibited practice (please see the article Abortion, the Bible, and a Woman’s Right to Choose).  And this policy is setting China up for problems–I believe that part of why China will help supply manpower for the 200,000,000 man army of Revelation 9:16 is because this one child policy is resulting in an excessively high male to female birth ratio because of gender-driven abortions.Because of early Chinese symbols–which seem to indicate Chinese knowledge of some of the early events in the Book of Genesis–the Chinese should realize that abortion is prohibited and that the devil influences it (of course, even more so should Western nations who claim the Bible as their own, but they ignore much of what it teaches).

It may be of interest to note that a Chinese symbol for Prohibition is the combination of the symbols for two trees (mù) from the Garden of Eden and the symbol for command:

jìnjin líng sji
Prohibition
To Prohibit
= Tree + (Divine) Command

Notice that the Chinese symbol for Devil is composed of the characters for secret, person, and garden:

gui si eer tièn
Devil = Secret + Person + Garden

Hence, the Chinese seem to have retained knowledge that the devil encouraged sin from the beginning in the Garden of Eden.

But what about China’s current influence and prosperity?

Roderick C. Meredith of the Living Church of God, who recently visited the People’s Republic of China wrote:

Many publications have suggested that the 21st century will be “China’s century.” Even though the Chinese are fiercely moving forward, and their progress in developing their industries is obvious, these publications are dead wrong for two reasons. First, the inspired word of God describes specifically how a coming European Union will be the dominant force in this world—obviously within the next several years. Therefore, brethren, I would like to focus your mind on this matter so you can more intelligently “watch” world events along this line as they unfold before your very eyes. In the coming years, you will perhaps even see a revolt of the peasants in the outlying Chinese cities, who have lagged far behind the standard of living afforded those who have moved to Beijing and Shanghai. Plus, the tremendous pollution of the water, air and foodstuffs may bring about massive disease epidemics and other problems for the Chinese.

In addition, distracting wars and other events may— as God chooses to guide it—greatly undermine the material progress now being made by the Chinese. Meanwhile, you will soon see the European Union evolve into an absolutely powerful and dynamic force in the world— ultimately to become the “Beast” as revealed in Revelation 17 in your own Bible!

So the 21st century will not be the “Chinese century!” Rather it will appear to become the European century for a few years, until the magnificent return of Jesus Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. From then on, the 21st century will be, indeed, “Christ’s century!” And all of us who are able to understand the “Big Picture” of world events from God’s point of view should be preparing to help straighten out the appalling degree of suffering, starvation and misconduct we find on this earth today in virtually every nation (Meredith R.C. An Inspiring and Successful Trip. Living Church News. May-June 2007, p. 21).

It is important to note that the Bible says that all trading nations will have become wealthy trading with Babylon (the restored European Empire–not China) that really prospers in the beginning of the great tribulation:

For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury (Revelation 18:3, NKJV throughout).

Thus, merchandising China, as the world’s most populous nation, is prophesied to attain additional wealth from the coming restored European Empire, but it will not then be the most powerful nation in the world.

Church of God Winter Events in Kentucky, Vermont, and North Carolina

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Norman Edwards of Servant’s News and PABC sent the following in an email:

I would like to encourage brethren to attend the Winter Family Tournament December 21-25 in Lexington, Kentucky. According to Alan Ruth (theJournal.org & biblestudy.org), this is the largest non-denominational Sabbatarian gathering in the country. It is a wonderful place for young and old to meet, and a lot has been done to keep the costs of food and lodging low.

I will be attending with my family…

Winter Family Tournament
Lexington, Kentucky 2007
Sponsored by Church of God, Cincinnati, and Church of God, Lexington

Jim O’Brien originally began this event when he was in the United Church of God (UCG).  UCG had some objections after a couple of years, and a few years back this led to Jim O’Brien, and what is now being called “Church of God, Cincinnati, and Church of God, Lexington”, splitting from UCG.

So “non-denominational” is not really how I would term the O’Brien event–it is mainly an event for those in small groups and the non-aligned independents.

Anyway, UCG decided that it had to have its own “Winter Weekend” event at the same time that year (probably to attempt to reduce its losses).  And it has turned out to be a major event for both UCG and Jim O’Brien (though they are separate events now).

The United News reports:

Make plans to set aside Dec. 21 to 25 and join 2,000 of your closest family and friends for four days of education, fellowship, fun and games. We’re excited this year to once again offer affordable housing and excellent sporting venues for what promises to be another memorable Winter Family Weekend. It all begins with a Bible study on Friday evening (Dec. 21) at 7:30 followed by a dessert reception and it ends at midnight on Tuesday night (Dec. 25).

While the Living Church of God does not have a similar event, this year it has two events around the same time.  The following is from the latest LCG Weekly Update:

Fifteenth Anniversary Weekend: Online Registration

Take note: If you are planning to participate in the 15th Anniversary celebration in Charlotte, please take a moment to complete the on-line registration.  This registration replaces the hand count that was taken earlier to gauge attendance.  You may register inside of the MyLCG area of the www.cogl.orgwebsite.  An accurate count of how many people will be participating in each of the weekend’s activities is essential as we plan for this special occasion.  If you do not have Web access, please obtain assistance from someone in your congregation who can do it for you. Payment can be made online at the “donations” button on the MyLCG site. Important: In the “donation designation” box write “anniversary events.”

You will not receive a donation receipt for these payments since they are for goods and services. Payment can also be made by conventional check made out to Living Church of God and mailed to 2301 Crown Centre Drive, Charlotte, NC 28227.  Remember to write on the check “anniversary events.”

Marriage Seminar: The number of seats available for the marriage seminar has been increased.  If you attempted to register for the event and got a message that it was “full,” you may now go back and register…

Northeast Young Adults Ski Weekend

We are taking final registrants for the Northeast Young Adults Ski Weekend!  Take advantage of this opportunity to build bonds of friendship with other young adults, learn more about God’s way of life and simply have a great time! This year’s location is Ludlow, Vermont, located minutes away from Okemo Mountain, one of the top ski areas in the Northeast.  If you love to ski, this is the place to be.  If you just enjoy being around other young adults, then you are welcome as well! Arrival is on Friday afternoon/evening, December 21. Departure is on Wednesday, December 26. The program will begin with a relaxing Sabbath brunch in the morning and services in the afternoon. After the Sabbath, you may want to relax in our private lodge or walk through the quaint town of Ludlow. On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, we will have lectures in the morning, and skiing and fun in the afternoon!  The evenings will be open for more social activities. The lectures will be provided by Mr. Gerald Weston, Mr. Jonathan McNair, and other guest lecturers. Topics will be announced later. The closest airport is Albany, New York.  If you fly into Albany, we will be able to provide transportation to Ludlow.  The cost for accommodations, on-site meals, and lift tickets is $300.  If you don’t plan to ski, the cost is $250. Register now—space is limited.  To register, go to www.formdesk.com/mcnair/form1. For questions and more information, contact Jonathan McNair at jmcnair@lcg.org

Though it is fairly far from where we live (we are near the central coast of California) our oldest son might attend the ski weekend in Vermont.

LCG to Meet With UCG: There Will Be No Merger

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

My wife, youngest son, and I having a private lunch with Dr. and Mrs. Meredith during the Feast of Tabernacles in 2005. Dr. Meredith is the Presiding Evangelist of the Living Church of God.

In his latest update, LCG’s Dr. D. Winnail wrote:

Next Wednesday, Mr. Ames, Mr. Apartian and I will be visiting the UCG office in Cincinnati. About a year ago, when two representatives from UCG visited our office in Charlotte, they invited us to make a return visit. We found the visit last year was helpful to maintain lines of communication when issues arise of mutual concern.

The anti-COG AW site already posted the following about it:

Well, well. Which issue of “mutual concern” do you think might have arisen? Nothing about this on the COGwriter blog… puzzling because Bob has heaps to say when the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches hold a pow-wow (which, unlike this, is hardly “news of the Churches of God”). Could Bob’s reluctance be because he’s just made his annual unflattering comparison between LCG/UCG financial statements?

No, there is no reluctance to post about this at the COGwriter site.

I normally do not post the update until the day after the Sabbath in accordance with LCG policy.  Hence, there was no reason to comment prior to now.

And my comment?

The same as I emailed someone else earlier this morning who asked me about it:

There is absolutely no merger in the works.

UCG visited LCG a year ago and invited LCG to visit their HQ.  There are from time to time mutual issues (like warning about unstable individuals, people losing jobs for Holy Days/Sabbaths, not serving in the military, etc.) that cooperation can be helpful for.

And those who think otherwise are mistaken.  While both groups have sometimes lost members to each other, and this will undoubtedly continue to occur to some degree, there will be be no merger between the two groups.  Not now, nor in the future.

The two groups differ too much in priorities and doctrine.

Two articles of related interest may include:

Differences between the Living Church of God and United Church of God This article provides quotes information from the two largest groups which had their origins in WCG as well as commentary.

COGwriter Top Ten for November 2007

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

COGwriter

November 2007 was a very good month at the cogwriter website with unique visitors, number of visits, and page views all up.  And basically double compared to November 2006.

The ten most popular articles viewed were as follows:

  1. Read the Bible Christians should read the Bible. This article gives some rationale for regular bible reading.
  2. Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland claims to be one of the two witnesses. He has at least one other view that suggests that he is not part of the COG.
  3. Did Early Christians Celebrate Birthdays? Did biblical era Jews celebrate birthdays? Who originally celebrated birthdays? When did many that profess Christ begin birthday celebrations?
  4. The History of Early Christianity Are you aware that what most people believe is not what truly happened to the true Christian church?
  5. Why Not the Restored Church of God? This group, led by David Pack, claims to be the most faithful. The information in this article suggests otherwise.
  6. Some Similarities and Differences Between the Orthodox Church and the Churches of God Both groups have some amazing similarities and some major differences. Do you know what they are?
  7. Sola Scriptura or Prima Luther? What Did Martin Luther Really Believe About the Bible? Though he is known for his public sola Scriptura teaching, Martin Luther’s writings about the Bible suggest he felt that prima Luther was his ultimate authority.
  8. What Does the Catholic Church Teach About Christmas and the Holy Days? Do you know what the Catholic Church says were the original Christian holy days? Was Christmas among them?
  9. There are Many COGs: Why Support the Living Church of God? This is an article for those who wish to easily sort out the different COGs. It really should be a MUST READ for current and former WCG members or any interested in supporting the faithful church.
  10. Church of God, Seventh Day: History and Teachings Nearly all COG’s I am aware of trace their history through this group. Whaid Rose is the president of the largest CG7 group (Denver). Do you know much about them?

Number 11 for the month was the article on Polycarp of Smyrna.

I was pleasantly surprised that the short article Read the Bible was so popular (I do not recall it ever being in the top ten before).

The results and mix of articles viewed suggests, to me at least, that a people of various areas of interest are viewing this site, and more non-COGr’s are finding out about the COGs.
