EU Votes for New Military

Soldiers from Old Roman Empire

COGwriter

Well, it is no surprise but the following is another potentially prophetic milestone:

MEPs promote a strong and effective foreign, security and defence policy

European Parliament – Feb 19, 2009

MEPs point out that the European Union needs to develop its strategic autonomy. This strategic autonomy will help the EU to promote peace and international security, to defend its interests in the world, to protect the security of its own citizens, to contribute to effective multilateralism, to advance respect for human rights and democratic values worldwide and to safeguard world peace. The report was adopted with 482 votes in favour, 111 against with 55 abstentions.

The Parliament recognises the need for the EU to develop its strategic autonomy through multilateral cooperation in international organisations, above all the United Nations, and through partnerships with other key actors, according to the report on the European Security Strategy (ESS) and European security and defence policy (ESDP), drafted by Karl Von Wogau (EPP-ED, DE)…
SAFE” – Synchronised Armed Forces Europe

The cooperation between national armed forces should increasingly synchronised and called “SAFE” – Synchronised Armed Forces Europe. The European Parliament notes that a common defence policy in Europe requires an integrated European Armed Force which needs to be equipped with common weapon systems so as to guarantee commonality and interoperability.

European Security Strategy

MEPs note that the 2003 ESS highlights the main threats faced by the European Union: terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, regional conflicts, state failure and organised crime.

Otherwise, according to MEPs, the security interests of the Union also include the protection of its citizens and its interests inside the EU as well as abroad, the security of its neighbourhood and the protection of its external borders and critical infrastructure. Furthermore, it includes the improvement of its cyber security, the security of energy supply and sea lanes, the protection of its space assets and protection against the consequences of climate change.

Parliament stresses that the European Union gives priority to crisis prevention in the ESDP. It suggests that the ESS should be reviewed every five years at the beginning of a new EU legislative period.

MEPs strongly request that the European Union and its Member States focus their efforts on common capabilities which can be used for both defence and security purposes. In this context, they consider satellite-based intelligence, surveillance and warning equipment, unmanned air vehicles, helicopters and telecommunication equipment and air and sea transport to be crucial. MEPs also demand a common technical standard for protected telecommunications and ways of protecting critical infrastructure.

Civilian and military operations

MEPs also call for further initiatives concerning common training for personnel who are to work together in civilian and military operations. They ask for increased interaction between the armed forces and civilian personnel of EU Member States, coordination of crisis-related training, exchange programmes among armed forces in Europe and the opening-up of armies to citizens of other EU Member States.

Ultimately, the BIble shows that the emerging Beast power in Europe will be a highly effective war-making machine.  It is expected to essentially be a modern version of the old Roman Empire.

Notice the following:

4 So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” (Revelation 13:3-4)

Having a European military structure in place prior to the arising of the future King of the North, who will lead the European beast power, would seem to be another step in the fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

When do the 1335 days, 1290 days, and 1260 days (the time, times, and half a time) of Daniel 12 begin? When does the Bible show that economic collapse will affect the United States?

Martin Luther’s Legacy

Protestant Reformer Martin Luther

COGwriter

Dr. Jim West, who seems to be a Southern Baptist, had the following at his blog this morning:

I’m not quite sure how I forgot this yesterday, but the 18th of February is the anniversary of Martin Luther’s death (in 1546).  Love him or hate him, no one in their right mind can deny 1) his tremendous influence in the development of Protestant theology; 2) his fantastic theological insight; and 3) his erroneous interpretation of the Lord’s Supper.  It’s a crying shame that our own times cannot boast a Luther or a Zwingli or a Calvin.  We are the poorer for it and the 16th century the richer (and so far as I’m concerned, the richest century for Christian theology since the first).

If someone like Martin Luther or Huldrych Zwingli or John Calvin arose today and did what those people did, they would be exposed as frauds and not true Christians.

All of those Protestants were guilty of murder of people that they had killed as part of their religious persecutions.

Their legacies are a disgrace to the name Christian.

Since Dr. Luther was the primary one that Dr. West mentioned, let’s show some of why he was not a faithful Christian, but instead a horrible persecutor as he wrote:

I, Martin Luther, slew all the peasants in the rebellion, for I said that they should be slain; all their blood is upon my head. But I cast it on the Lord God, who commanded me to speak this way (Werke, Erl. Edition, lix, p. 284 ‘Table Talk’ as quoted in Stoddard JL. Rebuilding a Lost Faith, 1922, p.96).

It is reported that 100,000 perished at that time.

He also did not care for Jews as he also wrote to persecute them:

…to burn down Jewish schools and synagogues, and to throw pitch and sulphur into the flames; to destroy their homes; to confiscate their ready money in gold and silver; to take from them their sacred books, even the whole Bible; and if that did not help matters, to hunt them of the country like mad dogs (Luther’s Works, vol. Xx, pp. 2230-2632 as quoted in Stoddard JL. Rebuilding a Lost Faith, 1922, p.99).

Accordingly, it must and dare not be considered a trifling matter but a most serious one to seek counsel against this and to save our souls from the Jews, that is, from the devil and from eternal death. My advice, as I said earlier, is: First, that their synagogues be burned down, and that all who are able toss in sulphur and pitch (Martin Luther (1483-1546): On the Jews and Their Lies, 1543 as quoted from Luther’s Works, Volume 47: The Christian in Society IV, (Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1971). pp 268293).

I, for one, can deny that Martin Luther had “tremendous theological insight”.  He was ego driven to a great degree and never actually believed in his rallying cry of Sola Scriptura.

Actually, he believed that he was essentially above the Bible.  He added to it, took away from it, and discounted many books in it.  Yet he is considered some type of hero by most Protestants.

Martin Luther specifically changed or diminished the importance of at least 18 books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Esther, Job, Ecclesiastes, Jonah, Matthew, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation.

Perhaps none of Martin Luther’s writings about books of the Bible are as harsh as what he wrote about the book which refers to itself as “The Revelation of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 1:1). Specifically Martin Luther wrote,

About this book of the Revelation of John, I leave everyone free to hold his own opinions. I would not have anyone bound to my opinion or judgment. I say what I feel. I miss more than one thing in this book, and it makes me consider it to be neither apostolic nor prophetic…I can in no way detect that the Holy Spirit produced it. Moreover he seems to me to be going much too far when he commends his own book so highly-indeed, more than any of the other sacred books do, though they are much more important-and threatens that if anyone takes away anything from it, God will take away from him, etc. Again, they are supposed to be blessed who keep what is written in this book; and yet no one knows what that is, to say nothing of keeping it. This is just the same as if we did not have the book at all. And there are many far better books available for us to keep…My spirit cannot accommodate itself to this book. For me this is reason enough not to think highly of it: Christ is neither taught nor known in it. But to teach Christ, this is the thing which an apostle is bound above all else to do; as Christ says in Acts 1, ‘You shall be my witnesses.’ Therefore I stick to the books which present Christ to me clearly and purely (Luther, M. Preface to the Revelation of St. John; first appearing in the September Testament of 1522).

Martin Luther seems to be teaching that since he has a hard time understanding this book that it is not inspired, that John made inaccurate statements in it, that the sayings from Jesus in this book are false (as he wrote the ‘Christ is neither taught or known in it’).

Martin Luther’s legacy seems to be that “Christians” can ignore much of the Bible, engage in anti-biblical practices such as persecution and military warfare, can accept pagan holiday traditions while professing Christ, and ignore much of Bible prophecy.

If Protestants really wish to believe in Sola Scriptura then they would change their practices, truly strive to live as Jesus lived, and not at all venerate such people as the murderous ones like Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, or John Calvin.

Please, if you profess Christ and are not in the Living Church of God, look more into what happened in your church.

Also you owe it to yourself to at least review the The History of Early Christianity page as it can be a great starting point to show you that there truly is a faithful church, that was often persecuted, but that did not change its doctrines for political and other compromising reasons.

Was the true Church supposed to be the persecuted or the persecutors?

According to Jesus, the true Church would be persecuted and maligned (Matthew 5:11-12).

Notice also what the Apostle John wrote:

11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God (3 John 11).

Being a persecutor is evil. Real Christians never would do that.

Germany, Europe, & Asia Problems

All World Currencies Can Have Problems

COGwriter

Germany looks like it might nationalize some of its banks, and other parts of Europe and Asia are also having financial problems:

Bank woes forces Germany into nationalisation law

Reuters – Feb 18, 2009

The German cabinet approved a law on Wednesday letting it nationalise banks, setting aside a reluctance to seize private property in the latest government intervention worldwide to tackle the financial crisis. Germany said it was not planning to extend the role of the state through the bill, which it described as a last resort and could lead to the forced nationalisation of struggling German lender Hypo Real Estate.

But it nonetheless set aside a postwar commitment to respect private property, becoming the latest government to edge away from free market policies, instead using state support to prop up flagging banks and industries.

President Barack Obama on Tuesday signed into law a $787 billion package of spending and tax cuts, the biggest initiative of its kind in U.S. history. He said the stimulus package would ‘mark the beginning of the end’ of the ills facing the economy.

But with new problems emerging all the time from a twin collapse in asset prices and availability of credit, financial markets remained jittery about the outlook…

Obama was also expected on Wednesday to unveil a plan to stabilise the housing market, using roughly $50 billion of government subsidies to lenders to prevent foreclosures.

GERMANY AGONISES

In Germany, the new law was presented as last resort to stabilise Hypo Real Estate, which has received 102 billion euros ($129 billion) in state guarantees.

The law leaves open the possibility of an expropriation of Hypo’s shareholders, which includes U.S. private equity investor JC Flowers with nearly a quarter of Hypo’s shares.

Other countries, including Britain and Ireland, have already seized control of banks, justifying this by pointing to the nature of the crisis and the need to protect taxpayers.

But Germany has agonised over ‘Enteignung’ (expropriation) of shareholders, a loaded term linked in the minds of many to Nazi seizures of Jewish property in the 1930s.

In France, President Nicolas Sarkozy was trying to assuage labour unrest over his handling of the economic crisis which included a 26 billion euro ($33 billion) stimulus package that targets investment rather than directly helping consumers.

He was due to meet unions later to discuss their demands for measures to protect jobs and wages, though his room for manoeuvre was limited by budgetary constraints.

The latest welter of government intervention has done little to reassure financial markets. Global share prices, as measured by MSCI’s world equity index, were down on Wednesday reflecting hefty falls in Asia overnight…

Overall, investors were still heading into safe assets such as gold as worries spread the recession could drag down economies which had so far resisted the worst of the crisis.

INSTABILITY IN CHINA

In China — which many had hoped might be able to power the global economy out of the worst downturn since the Great Depression — a trade union official warned against ‘hostile forces’ stirring up trouble among newly unemployed workers.

The Communist Party leadership has already expressed concerns about idle rural workers gathered in struggling export hubs. About 20 million jobs have been lost in southern China’s manufacturing hub of Guangdong alone.

Beijing said it would increasingly use its foreign exchange reserves to support domestic growth and finance Chinese companies overseas. But it denied a magazine report quoting a senior official as saying its slowing economy meant the yuan might weaken to as low as 6.95 to 7 per dollar.

The news across Asia has been almost uniformly bad.

Japan is reeling from its worst downturn in a generation. In Taiwan, a source close to the government said GDP fell 8.36 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008.http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/18022009/323/topwrap-4-bank-woes-forces-germany-nationalisation-law.html

Some feel that the USA will be nationalizing many more of its banks this year (see US Debt and British Banking).

We in the Living Church of God have repeatedly stated that China would not truly be the economic force of the world because of Bible prophecy and its own internal issues (some quotes related to that are in the article Asia in Prophecy)–but that does not mean that all the economic news for China will be bad–the Bible suggests prosperity, at least for a short while (Revelation 18:9-15).

The economic situation in the world is precarious, but Bible prophecy is fairly clear that the Europeans will eventually gain the upper hand for the world economy (though they may have a lot of problems before they are there).

As Jesus said, “Watch” (Matthew 24:42; 25:13; Mark 13:33-37; Luke 21:36).

Obama Announces “Beginning of the End”

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

COGwriter

President Obama signed a new plan yesterday which will greatly increase USA debt and made an odd declaration:

Stimulus deal the beginning of the end: Obama

Australian Broadcasting Corporation – Feb 18, 2009

US President Barack Obama has signed his $US787 billion ($1.2 trillion) economic stimulus package into law.

The stimulus package, with its combination of new infrastructure spending and tax breaks, is aimed at pulling the US economy out of recession and saving or creating up to 4 million jobs.

Mr Obama has staked his own political viability on the package, saying its success will determine his own.

At the signing ceremony in Denver this morning, Mr Obama said the package would lay the groundwork for “real and lasting change for generations to come“.

“The American Recovery and Investment Act that I will sign today is the most sweeping economic recovery package in our history,” he said.

“I don’t want to pretend that today marks the end of our economic problems, nor does it constitute all of what we have to do to turn the economy around,” he added.

But today does mark the beginning of the end…” http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/02/18/2494186.htm?section=business

Now President Obama meant the beginning of the end of various economic problems.  However, he is apparently continuing a change that previous USA administrations began regarding greatly increasing USA debt.  A change that will essentially eliminate the USA as an independent nation perhaps some time next decade.

The fact is that the Bible prophesied this type of debt and, partially because of his lack of prophetic understanding, the new USA president is helping fulfill the following as it will occur at the end times:

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…
6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases
What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you (Habakkuk 2:3,6-8).

The above prophecy will be fulfilled at the time of the end.  And since the USA has gone from being the largest creditor nation the world has ever known, to the greatest debtor nation that the world has ever known.

The increase of debt is not only a sign that the end is getting nearer, it is also a sign that the USA is losing God’s blessings as being in debt to foreigners (the ones that will greatly finance this latest round of debt, as well as many of the future rounds that are expected under the Obama administration) is one of the curses that the Bible forecasts:

43 The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. 45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 And they shall be upon you for a sign and a wonder, and on your descendants forever.

47 “Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you (Deuteronomy 28:42-51).

We are in the time of the end, but the end (meaning the beginning of the great tribulation) is not yet.  But it may not be too many years from now.

The increase of USA debt, without national repentance, will surely mean that the USA will fail economically, and many other ways as well as those scriptures make clear.

Eight More Reasons Why Barak Obama is NOT the Antichrist

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

COGwriter

While I have long written that Barack Obama is not the Antichrist (e.g. Barack Obama is Not the Antichrist), within the ranks of American “evangelicals” some clearly seem to feel that he is.

Here are some reasons/claims I have been sent (by various different ones) explaining why they feel that Barack Obama is the final Antichrist, followed by my comments, briefly explaining why they are in error (note the claims come mainly from emails I have received and I numbered them sequentially for this post):

1. Charismatic Speaker Worshipped By The Masses.  The Book of Daniel says the Beast will arise in a country made up of “diverse” people from “all kingdoms” [which could describe the USA].  The Beast “shall speak great words …and think to change times and laws.”  The Beast will have “understanding [of] dark sentences,” “shall magnify himself in his heart,” and will talk of peace “and by peace shall destroy many.”  Daniel 7:23-25; 8:23-25.  The worldwide masses will worship the charismatic Beast/Antichrist who will have a “mouth speaking great things.”  Revelation 13:3-8.

The charismatic Barack is conceited and a great orator who speaks of change and peace.  He is worshipped throughout the world including in the European Union — the successor to the Roman Empire.  Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine wrote in July 2008: “He wants to lay claim to become the president of the world.”

Indeed, in Berlin, Obama stated to the crowd that he was leading a movement to “remake the world.”

Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi said Obama has been “hailed by world public opinion as the arrival of a messiah.”

The Beast is NOT the final Antichrist (see SDA/LCG Differences: Two Horned Beast of Revelation and 666).  And the Beast will be the King of the North, and be a European. The United States is NOT the heir to the ancient Roman Empire, Europe is (for more information, please see Europa, the Beast, and the Book of Revelation).

2. False Prophets.  The advent of the Antichrist will be heralded by false prophets.  Jeremiah Wright and Father Pfleger, who claim to be in the prophetic tradition, compared Barack to Jesus.  Louis Farrakhan called Barack “the Messiah” to whom the youth will listen.

Actually, the Bible teaches that one called the false prophet will do miracles and cause people to worship the image of the Beast Revelation 16:13-14; 13:12-15).  Neither Jeremiah Wright not the other two mentioned above has thus far qualified according to the Bible.

3. 666.  Revelation 13:18 says “the number of the Beast … is the number of a man and his number is six hundred threescore and six.”  6+6+6=18, the number of letters in Barack Hussein Obama, whose Chicago power base includes the 60606 zip code.

On November 5 — the day after the election — in Obama’s home state of Illinois — the evening pick 3 lottery number was 6-6-6.

The Bible says that the number is six hundred sixty and six, hence none of the above qualifies (see also Is Barack Obama 666?).

4. Satanic Palindrome.  Sasha is only the nickname of Obama’s oldest daughter.  Her legal name is NATASHA — the reverse of AH SATAN.

Natasha is the Russian version of the name Natalie.  It is a female given name: from a Latin word meaning “birthday.”  And even though we in the Living Church of God do not celebrate birthdays (nor did early Christians, see Did Early Christians Celebrate Birthdays?), those who claim that his daughter’s name and putting it backwards has something to do with Antichrist have sunk to a new low.

5. 2012.  According to Revelation 13:5, the Beast/Antichrist will rule for 42 months of relative peace and prosperity before all…starts to break loose in the middle of the fourth year of his reign, culminating in the Battle of Armageddon.

The fourth year of Barack’s presidency will be 2012, the year the Mayan calendar comes to an end, the year of a rare planetary alignment, and a year that scholars say Nostradamus foresaw as tumultuous.

While Barack Obama should be USA president in 2012, according to the Bible the world will NOT be destroyed by a flood as some believe that the Mayan 2012 prophecies show.  Most have misunderstood the real significance of the Mayan and possible Nostradamus prophecies related to 2012–which are discussed in some detail, including Barak Obama’s possible role, in the article End of Mayan Calendar 2012–Might 2012 Mean Something?

6. Shiite Islamic Prophecy Of “A Tall Black Man” Running The West.  According to a 17th Century prophetic text of the Shiite branch of Islam, the return of the Mahdi, the Islamic messiah, in the End of Times will be preceded by “a tall black man” running “government in the West” and commanding “the strongest army on earth.”  The black “promised warrior” will carry a “clear sign” from Hussein ibn Ali (the third imam) and will assist the Mahdi in converting the world to Islam.  The Iranian media have identified Obama as the “promised warrior.”

The Shi’ite prophecy might be referring to Barack Obama, but it shows that the leader assists in the rise of the Islamic Madhi–who is highly likely to be the King of the South.  The Bible clearly shows, however, that the King of the South is defeated by King of the North (Daniel 11:40-43), thus Islam is NOT the religion of the final Antichrist.  Hence the idea that Barack Obama will help the world become Islamic is not correct–but there is likely some truth in the idea that Barack Obama might enable the one who will become the final King of the South (as well as the King of the North)–see also Barack Obama in Islamic Prophecy?

7. New Nostradamus Quatrains Scholars for the Smithsonian Institute have uncovered new interpretations that may relate to Barack Obama, the Illinois senator vying to become the next US president.

Professor Eugene Randell, Deputy Director of the Smithsonian Institution Archives has released information pertaining to the up and coming US elections. The Institute which holds some very rare Nostradamus manuscripts, believes that some of the quatrains written by the 16th century soothsayer are very close to describing the fight for the White House that is happening now…

243 The great empire will be torn from limb, The all-powerful one for more than four hundred years: Great power given to the dark one from slaves come, The Aryana will not be satisfied thereby.

However, the above story (though popular on the internet) is a hoax.  There does not appear to have ever been a Professor Eugene Randell who was Deputy Director of the Smithsonian Institution Archives; nor this new quatrain 243.  The publisher of the above also would not verify its story even after I made two requests (see Obama Nostradamus Hoax).

However, there are one or two other prophecies of Nostradamus that might apply (Prophecies of Barack Obama? ), but they do not have Barack Obama as the Antichrist.

8. Fulfilled Daniel 9:27. Very early in the morning, on Thanksgiving Day, I could not get back to sleep. This is unusual for me, but the Lord has been urging me to listen for his voice when this happens…I was very, very confident that the Lord was giving me a BRAND NEW REVELATION, further confirmation that on OCT. 29, 2008, OBAMA CONFIRMED THE COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27, thrusting the world into the Final Seven Years…The Lord had called me to be a watchman many years ago…We have in circulation almost 10,000,000 tracts….2520 days (360 days X 7 Jewish years), after the 30 MINUTES OF SILENCE IN HEAVEN on Oct. 29, 2008, is Feast of Atonement. This is by divine design, not happenstance, or coincidence. On Feast of Atonement, especially in 2015, when the armies of the world will be surrounding the Jews in Israel preparing for the Battle of Armageddon, the Jews will be setting up animal sacrifices, attempting to ATONE for their sins for the past year…There may be a peace treaty with Israel and the Antichrist in the near future, but it will NOT be 7 years in length and it will NOT be the fulfillment of Daniel 9:27. THE FULFILLMENT OF DANIEL 9:27 HAS ALREADY HAPPENED ON OCT. 29, 2008, WITH THE CONFIRMING OF THE COVENANT. TRY CONVINCING ALL OF THAT AWESTRUCK AUDIENCE IN HEAVEN, WHO WERE COMPLETELY SILENT FOR EXACTLY 30 MINUTES AS OBAMA GAVE HIS HISTORIC SPEECH that this was not the confirming of the covenant of Daniel 9:27…Ron Reese

Contrary to claims and visions, the deal in Daniel 9;27 has not been made.  The deal will be made by a European, not an American, as even most Protestant commentators recognize.  This deal still needs to be made (for details, see Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2009, 2010, or 2011?).

Of course, as I wrote much earlier, the final Antichrist is primarily a religious and NOT a political figure according to the Bible (see Barack Obama is Not the Antichrist), thus Barack Obama is NOT the final Antichrist.

However, his charistmatic style may very well be copied by the future final Beast leader of Revelation 13, who is the final King of the North of Daniel 11.  And Barack Obama may help enable the rise of him as well as the future King of the South.  Also, because his policies of increasing USA debt, he may very well lead the destruction of the United States (see Anglo – America in Prophecy).

Those interested in learning how Barack Obama may fit into various prophecies should begin with the first article below and then perhaps the ones that follow:

Prophecies of Barack Obama? Are there biblical and non-biblical prophecies about Barack Obama. Did Nostradamus predict Barack Obama dealing with the Antichrist?  Might Barack Obama set the stage for the kings of the North and South as his timing and at least one Shiite prophecy suggests?  This is the longest and most detailed of the articles here at COGwriter related to prophecy and Barack Obama.
Barack Obama, Prophecy, and the Destruction of the United States Some claim that Barack Obama is the prophesied “son of Kenya”. Might Bible prophecy be fulfilled since he is to be the USA president?
Kenya Rejoices as Obama Wins This is a follow-up to the Barack Obama, Prophecy, and the Destruction of the United States news item and contains additional information about him, prophecies, and his background.  And when the United States and its Anglo-allies may be destroyed.
Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel Are the Americans, Canadians, British, Scottish, Welsh, Australians, Anglo-Southern Africans, and New Zealanders descendants of Joseph? Where are the lost ten-tribes of Israel? Who are the lost tribes of Israel? Will God punish the U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, and other Anglo nations? Why might God allow them to be punished first?
Barack Obama Carries Hindu Monkey God Although there are some strange and false stories about Barack Obama, this one seems to be true.
Barack Obama is Not the Antichrist Some have suggested that he may be, but he cannot be.  Find out why.

End of Mayan Calendar 2012–Might 2012 Mean Something? There is a Mayan calendar prediction for change in 2012. 2012 changes were also centuries ago predicted by the Hopi Native Americans (the Hindus may have some predictions for the next decade as well). Do these Mayan/Hindu/Hopi prophecies have any value? Why might Satan have inspired this date? Does the Dresden codex show destruction of the earth by flood? Can the great tribulation start before 2012?

Newsweek and PCG both have reported problems in South Africa.  Here is what Newsweek reported:

Fleeing From South Africa

Fourteen years after apartheid,
why are the best and the brightest leaving Africa’s most successful state?
Newsweek – Feb 14, 2009
From the magazine issue dated Feb 23, 2009

No one should be surprised to read that Zimbabwe has suffered massive emigration in recent years, especially among its white minority. But much less expected is the fact that next-door South Africa, the continent’s wealthiest and most developed country, is suffering a brain drain of its own (if on a smaller scale).

The South African government doesn’t keep reliable emigration statistics. But even as the global financial crisis has caused emigration from most other countries to slow, a number of recent independent studies show that mass departures from South Africa are ongoing and are sapping the nation of its skilled and best-educated young citizens. The most dramatic figures can be found among South African whites, who are leaving at a pace consistent with the advent of “widespread disease, mass natural disasters or large-scale civil conflict,” according to a report by the South African Institute on Race Relations.

Some 800,000 out of a total white population of 4 million have left since 1995, by one count. But they’re hardly alone. Blacks, coloreds (as people of mixed race are known in South Africa) and Indians are also expressing the desire to leave. In the last 12 years, the number of blacks graduating in South Africa with advanced degrees has grown from 361,000 to 1.4 million a year. But in that time the number of those expressing high hopes to emigrate has doubled…

The primary driver for emigration among all groups, but especially whites, who still retain the majority of South Africa’s wealth, is fear of crime. With more than 50 killings a day, South Africa has one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world. The same goes for rape—ranking the country alongside conflict zones such as Sierra Leone, Colombia and Afghanistan.

Another largely unnoticed problem is the growing number of attacks on South Africa’s white farmers. As in neighboring Zimbabwe, some of the attacks appear to be racially motivated. Others seem simply opportunistic, but the result is that white farmers’ numbers continue to decrease, leading to fears that despite the government’s good intentions, a Zimbabwe-style crisis—where the flight of skilled farmers led to an agricultural collapse—is possible here too.

Then there’s the problem of affirmative action, which many whites feel limits their opportunities for advancement and which keeps many émigrés from returning. “You can attract people home, but there are still the same concerns when they get here,” Chen says. “Crime and lack of job opportunities if you’re not the right color.”

Still another factor driving out citizens of all races is the country’s political crisis. National elections are due in April, and the likely next president, Jacob Zuma, faces a battery of serious corruption charges and accusations of autocratic behavior. Zuma’s ruling ANC party has been split by a rebellion of former loyalists, and increasing numbers of South Africans express concern with the health of their young democracy. The leadership vacuum has also distracted attention from pressing national concerns like energy. Last spring the country was engulfed in rolling “brownouts” as the electric grid ground to a halt because of mismanagement.

For all these reasons, even the global economic slowdown hasn’t been enough to keep qualified South Africans at home. Of the country’s 25,000 registered accountants, fully a quarter now live overseas. Engineers, doctors, nurses and accountants are all in increasingly short supply. In February, Health Minister Barbara Hogan said South Africa’s doctors are “constantly being poached” by places like Canada, Australia and the United States—among the most popular destinations for wealthy white émigrés.

Banks and investment companies are forced to look for talent overseas, and Eskom, the disgraced national electricity provider, has recently begun scrambling to attract electrical engineers back home, but with little success.

The long-term effects of this exodus are already being felt in other critical ways. The vast majority of South Africa’s emigrants are also the country’s best and brightest. Compounding the problem is the fact that while South Africa has lenient policies toward admitting refugees from elsewhere in Africa, the import of skilled labor is still quite onerous—meaning that as more and more trained workers leave, there are fewer and fewer replacements. Pretoria needs new policies to balance these flows, says Debbie Milner of Future Fact. “Africa has a huge amount of skilled people in it, and many other African countries have better education systems than our own.”

To succeed, post-racial South Africa also needs to move nonwhite professionals quickly up the ranks in all sectors of its economy, and the government’s black-empowerment plan centers on ensuring that more of its citizens get advanced degrees. But as growing numbers of these graduates express a desire to follow their white colleagues out the door, the prospects for continued economic empowerment are dimming.

“We were dumbfounded by the incredibly high numbers of people who claim they’re seriously considering leaving South Africa,” Milner says. While unemployment for whites has increased more than 100 percent since the end of apartheid, it remains as low as an average European country, between 7 percent and 8 percent. Joblessness among blacks, on the other hand, is hovering at around 50 percent. “If the qualified nonwhites are leaving too, that is pretty dire for black economic empowerment,” Milner says.

To be fair, not all the signs point in one direction. The global economic downturn has led to anecdotal reports of South Africans returning from the once hot economies of Europe and North America. Others who were recently on the verge of leaving have now decided to stay put, in some cases when their offers were rescinded at the last moment. http://www.newsweek.com/id/184783

Here is what PCG reported:

South Africa: The Next Zimbabwe…

Fourteen years after the end of apartheid, some people are longing to return to its relative prosperity. For millions of South Africans, the Mandela “rainbow” revolution has become a gloomy cloud. Segregation laws are no more, but conditions are much worse.

An astounding 40 percent of South Africans now live beneath the poverty line. And according to the Southern African Regional Poverty Network, since the official end of apartheid, “households living in poverty have sunk deeper into poverty and the gap between rich and poor has widened.”

The exact unemployment rate is contentious. Unions place it at around 40 percent, while official government statistics say it is “only” around 23 percent. Either way, it is horrendous. Unemployment in the U.S. during the Great Depression peaked at around 25 percent.

And, although government ministers claim that South Africa is still growing and will avoid “recession,” conditions on the ground indicate that “official” recession has already arrived. Investment bank Barclays warns that the economy is currently contracting. Over 200,000 jobs were lost during the last quarter of 2008—a very large number for a country with a population of only 44 million. The U.S. equivalent would be akin to losing 1.4 million jobs over that time frame.

“The growth picture has soured radically,” warns absa Capital economist Ian Marsberg, “we are in for a rough ride next year.”…

Violence runs unchecked throughout much of the country. It was estimated, according to 2006 figures, that a woman is raped in South Africa once every 26 seconds. During that year, less than 1 percent of rapes led to a conviction.

Murderers run free too. About 19,000 people were murdered last year—more than 50 per day.

Rule of law has become the rule of organized crime. Just yesterday, 500 police in South Africa’s crime-ridden commercial capital, Johannesburg, went on strike, accusing authorities of failing to bring senior officers to task over corruption.

Last Friday, the government disbanded the country’s elite anti-crime investigating unit, known as the Scorpions. Why, especially when the Scorpions had a much better track record than the police at solving crime? According to Agence France Presse, it was because they fell afoul of the ruling African National Congress party for their corruption investigation of anc leader Jacob Zuma. Zuma is expected to become the country’s next president when elections are held, probably in April.

But as bad as conditions are in South Africa, they may be about to get dramatically worse.

South Africa’s government has shifted radically to the left, according to the Sunday Times. In a move to placate angry voters and cement power, the ruling anc party’s Jacob Zuma is pushing a manifesto largely dictated by the country’s Communist party. Zuma’s election promises, if adopted, could easily bankrupt the country.

The anc already promises a free allowance of water and electricity to all people and has introduced “the largest welfare state ever seen in a developing country,” according to the Times. More than 40 percent of the population currently receive state handouts.

But the state handouts are only beginning.

The possibly soon-to-be-published new state manifesto is said to call for universal health insurance, free education, increased child allowances, new maternity grants, wage subsidies, an old age savings scheme, subsidized housing for farm workers and military veterans, and free food handouts to all poor families.

But perhaps the bigger shock is the manifesto’s proposal to transform “the private sector through the development of cooperative financial institutions.” In other words, nationalize and communize the economy.

Zuma’s program also calls for the state to take over the South African central bank.

Economists are astounded.

Greta Steyn, a leading South African financial analyst, says that the markets are being set up for a massive crash and are “in denial.” Servaas van der Berg, professor of economics at Stellenbosch University, said that just the proposal for a basic income grant of R100 (us$10) would force up marginal income tax rates from 40 percent to 66 percent.

So where will South Africa get the money to finance all these reforms?

Jacob Zuma, whom the Times describes as knowing relatively little about economics, seems unconcerned.

But here is a hint: Zuma will get the money he needs the same way his pal Robert Mugabe gets the money he needs.

Lest we forget, Zimbabwe used to be even more prosperous than South Africa was at its peak. But then Robert Mugabe set off on his post-colonial reforms, his social programs, his government handouts, and the land grabs. And how did Mugabe pay for it all? First, he redistributed the land in order to fill his coffers and buy favors. When that wasn’t enough, he started nationalizing other sectors of the economy, including some of the world’s richest mines. But that wasn’t enough either. So eventually, he was forced to nationalize and assert complete control over the nation’s reserve bank—that way he could print whatever money he wanted to pay the bills. Unfortunately, that destroyed the value of Zimbabwe’s currency—completely wiping out what little savings his people had left. But Mugabe and his cronies got filthy rich in the process, moving assets offshore, or converting their devaluing dollars into gold or other currencies.

The anc’s supposed desire to nationalize South Africa’s central bank should be a clear indicator of what is headed in South Africa’s direction: Zimbabwe economics. And that means a Zimbabwe standard of living for the vast majority.

Things are about to get much tougher in South Africa.

Africa’s modern history is a continent filled with nation-states in various stages of post-colonial collapse. South Africa was a notable exception to this rule for several decades after becoming an independent republic. But now, that is changing—and rapidly. The true cause for South Africa’s wealth, and the reason it is now disappearing, is rooted in the nation’s historical connection to the British Empire. Biblical prophecy outlines the curses South Africa increasingly finds itself under, curses that are destined to grow worse in the time ahead.

When my wife and I visited South Africa over 20 years ago, we met a woman from Rhodesia (renamed Zimbawe) at church who told us that she felt that the fleeing that had began in Rhodesia in her time would be repeated in South Africa.  And to a degree, she has been correct.

Essentially, although there are supposed to be laws to protect the farmers in South Africa, sometimes for political reasons, those laws are ignored.  Hence, food production is now also problem and many seem to feel that they are subject to losing everything if they remain there.

As South Africa essentially in made up of those of upper African and European, including Anglo, heritage, the following three articles may give some clues about its future:

Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel Are the Americans, Canadians, British, Scottish, Welsh, Australians, Anglo-Southern Africans, and New Zealanders descendants of Joseph? Where are the lost ten-tribes of Israel? Who are the lost tribes of Israel? Will God punish the U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, and other Anglo nations? Why might God allow them to be punished first?
Europa, the Beast, and Revelation Where did Europe get its name? What might Europe have to do with the Book of Revelation? What about “the Beast”? What is ahead for Europe?
Africa: Its Biblical Past and Prophesied Future What does the Bible teach about Africa and its future? Did the early Church reach Africa? Will God call all the Africans?

Armageddon Portfolio

“Orthodox” 16th Century Representation of the “Apocalypse”

COGwriter

The Times of London had an interesting article yesterday:

The armageddon portfolio comes

The Sunday Times, London – Feb 15, 2009
by William Kay

Is armageddon round the corner? Not quite, but it may not be too soon to start planning for it.

Frontrunner for the Cassandra of the month award is Ed Balls, the schools secretary, for his prediction that this could be the worst financial shock for more than a century.

He has hit a nerve. Attempts by Margaret Beckett and Baroness Vadera to hint at green shoots have been dismissed. Last month’s rises in consumer spending and house prices are regarded as no more than blips.

Bank of England governor Mervyn King is talking of a collapse in confidence and admitting that the Bank has little idea of what is going to happen. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/money/investment/article5732533.ece

The author is correct that the mainstream did not expect this financial problem.  However, regular readers of the COGwriter page have been being warned about this for quite some time.

And while not relying on the government is certainly wise, the Bible warns against trusting ones self as God is the one who can only be trusted in these times:

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the LORD and depart from evil.
8 It will be health to your flesh,
And strength to your bones.

9 Honor the LORD with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10 So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine. (Proverbs 3:5-10)

So God says to trust in Him and give to Him.  That is a different approach than the secular author has taken.  And while many will listen to the secular author, only those that will live the way of give and trust in God can truly have the strength to their bones during these times (see also Tithing Questions and Some Answers).

Furthermore, while physical preparation is a good idea (see Physical Preparation Scriptures for Christians), the idea that wealth will truly really work in the end times is simply a contradiction to the Bible.

Notice:

1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. (James 5:1-3).

19’They will throw their silver into the streets, And their gold will be like refuse; Their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them
In the day of the wrath of the LORD; They will not satisfy their souls, Nor fill their stomachs, Because it became their stumbling block of iniquity. (Ezekiel 7:19)

Now that does not mean that having additional cash, metals (see Norman Edwards: Silver) , foods (see Physical Preparation Scriptures for Christians), certain investments, etc. cannot have any value, but the Bible is warning against trusting in riches in these end times.

Carnal “solutions” in this age simply will not go to the ROOT of the problem. The ROOT is NOT the Federal Reserve, international bankers, corporations, the United Nations, plans for a “one-world order”, sub-prime mortgages, etc.

The ROOT is SIN that is the result of humankind cutting itself off from God and following their ways as influenced by Satan.

And while the solution for society’s problems would be repentance now, since that is unlikely, the ultimate solution is the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His kingdom on the earth. That is the good news.

But what about you now and your personal “armageddon portfolio” (to borrow that expression)?

Notice what Jesus taught:

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:37-40)

Notice, specifically, what the first two things that people really need to do according to the Apostle Peter:

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.”  (Acts 2:38-40)

Also notice:

1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. (Hebrews 6:1-2)

The world’s systems and ways are dead works.  They are something that true Christians need to repent of.

Then they can go on to perfection and support the work of proclaiming the good news of Christ’s coming kingdom to this earth.

Focus on repentance, fully serving and trusting God, and loving your neighbor.  That is the only “armageddon porfolio” that can truly work.

Legacy: Myanmar to Stop Home Churches?

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

COGwriter

Last night, the latest newsletter from Legacy Institute’s Leon Sexton (who is based in northern Thailand) arrived.  It ended with the following chilling item:

I just received information that the Myanmar (Burma) government will no longer permit people to gather in homes or apartments for worship services; and the building of new church buildings will only be permitted by government approval. This adversely affects almost all of our brethren in Myanmar.

We have no time to waste. Dark clouds are massing over us here in Southeast Asia. Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Myanmar. Pray God protects them and provides wise congregational leadership to see them through the dark times ahead.

The Living Church of God, as well as some other groups, have people in Myanmar.  It has always been difficult for Christians there, and now it appears that it may be getting worse.

As one who has had church in his family’s home for more than 12 years, anytime anyone tries to restrict meeting in homes it sets off concerns.

In addition for praying for people in Myanmar, the Bible also states that we need to pray for government leaders:

1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, 7 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle–I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying–a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting (1 Timothy 2:1-8).

And “everywhere” includes praying for the leaders in your country, as well.

Some seem to want to ignore the fact that persecutions are coming.  And they will begin in some places before others.

The following article may be of interest one:

Persecutions by Church and State This article documents some that have occurred against those associated with the COGs and some prophesied to occur.

The Pride of the Power” of the USA will be broken per Leviticus 26:19

COGwriter

There has been a lot of negative news about the US & British economic systems this week.  Here are four stories that suggest problems in that respect:

Obama: Stimulus bill marks a ‘major milestone’

President savors victory in Congress in weekly radio and Internet address

Associated Press, updated 7:50 a.m. PT, Sat., Feb. 14, 2009

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama, savoring his first major victory in Congress, said Saturday that newly passed $787 billion economic stimulus legislation marks a “major milestone on our road to recovery.”

Speaking in his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama said, “I will sign this legislation into law shortly, and we’ll begin making the immediate investments necessary to put people back to work doing the work America needs done.”

At the same time, he cautioned, “This historic step won’t be the end of what we do to turn our economy around, but rather the beginning. The problems that led us into this crisis are deep and widespread, and our response must be equal to the task.” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29193762/

Britain: Lloyds Banking Group rocked by shock losses
The Times – Feb 14, 2009

Taxpayers could have to spend billions bailing out the banks again after massive and unexpected losses were disclosed by Britain’s new superbank.

Shares in Lloyds Banking Group fell 32 per cent to 61.4p yesterday after it reported losses of £10 billion in HBOS, making it worth far less than thought when it was taken over in November.

The news, a huge embarrassment for Gordon Brown, who helped to broker the deal, triggered speculation that the bank will have to come back to the Government for more capital. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/banking_and_finance/article5728797.ece

Federal obligations exceed world GDP

Does $65.5 trillion terrify anyone yet?
WND – Feb 13, 2009

As the Obama administration pushes through Congress its $800 billion deficit-spending economic stimulus plan, the American public is largely unaware that the true deficit of the federal government already is measured in trillions of dollars, and in fact its $65.5 trillion in total obligations exceeds the gross domestic product of the world.

The total U.S. obligations, including Social Security and Medicare benefits to be paid in the future, effectively have placed the U.S. government in bankruptcy, even before new continuing social welfare obligation embedded in the massive spending plan are taken into account.

The real 2008 federal budget deficit was $5.1 trillion, not the $455 billion previously reported by the Congressional Budget Office, according to the “2008 Financial Report of the United States Government” as released by the U.S. Department of Treasury.

The difference between the $455 billion “official” budget deficit numbers and the $5.1 trillion budget deficit cited by “2008 Financial Report of the United States Government” is that the official budget deficit is calculated on a cash basis, where all tax receipts, including Social Security tax receipts, are used to pay government liabilities as they occur.

But the numbers in the 2008 report are calculated on a GAAP basis (“Generally Accepted Accounting Practices”) that include year-for-year changes in the net present value of unfunded liabilities in social insurance programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

Under cash accounting, the government makes no provision for future Social Security and Medicare benefits in the year in which those benefits accrue. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=88851

Nationalization by autumn, bank on it

Reuters – Feb 13, 2009

James Saft is a Reuters columnist. The opinions expressed are his own.

Like it or not the United States will be forced to nationalize large swathes of its banking system by the time the leaves fall from the trees in Washington.

The tragedy is that we will have to wait that long and that the costs will mount.

The plan to rescue the banks, or, er, the people, as enunciated by Treasury Secretary Geithner, is no plan, only an apparent set of contradictory principles: an ideological one not to nationalize and a political one not to subsidize too obviously.

The plan will fail unless the administration comes out in favor of either subsidy or seizure of failing banks. Either the United States will be forced to nationalize when that becomes apparent or perhaps it is waiting until that failure makes nationalization more politically palatable.

In either event, it is a terrible mistake and the cost will only grow, both in direct terms for taxpayers and more broadly for the growing number of people with too little income to pay tax…

Those two points form the crux of the issue; for the banking system to work without widespread failure and nationalization we either have to hand out huge subsidies to banks directly, in the form of cheap capital, or indirectly, by giving a subsidy to investors who will pass on part of it to banks as a condition of getting their share. The first is unfair, the second unfair and inefficient…

And in fairness we don’t know how the stress tests will work or if it is possible to fail one. But President Obama did tell ABC News that nationalization “wouldn’t make sense” because of the scale and complexity of the U.S. economy and capital markets would make it too tough to manage and oversee. He’s right and government will do a terrible job of managing banks, but it will be forced to and may as well get on with it. They seem now to be hoping that the economy turns and bails them and the banks out of their pickle, but that is a dangerous bet.

By the time we figure out that it’s not working, when whatever capital we have injected is swamped by falls in asset prices — and remember deleveraging and asset price falls go hand in hand — things will be that much bleaker and the United States will have less room to maneuver…

And Obama is not FDR coming in after a depression was already entrenched, he is leading a country which is only beginning to wake up and to suffer. It is just possible, though not likely, that the administration realizes it will have to take more drastic steps but needs more time to prepare the ground and make that politically possible.

One factor which may come into play is international pressure not to nationalise. What is just about possible in the United States would be far harder in economies such as Britain’s with larger banking systems relative to their size and borrowing power. http://blogs.reuters.com/great-debate/2009/02/13/nationalisation-by-autumn-bank-on-it/

Now although I have a degree in accounting (along with others in other fields) and dislike how the US government handles its books, it needs to be pointed out that the obligations in the third article are future ones, and ones that rely on future workers to pay taxes–so in that respect that article may be slightly overly dramatic–but the USA still has too much debt.  And, while the USA might not take over all its banks, it did take over several more yesterday (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aDvuCGKfCGeM&refer=home).

The economic power of the USA in the world is truly being shaken.  At a point, probably next decade, the economic influence of the USA and Britain will be no more.

CEM’s Ron Dart on Governance

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

COGwriter

CEM’s Ronald Dart wrote the following as his 1 February 2009 announcement:

With the stench of political corruption filling the air, is it fair to ask how we got to this miserable place? It isn’t hard to see the picture at the immediate level. Power corrupts. Money is merely one form of power. It is as simple as that, and there is nothing especially new about it. I think the founders of our society understood this from history, and perhaps even from the Bible. Power destroys freedom, and it must necessarily be so.

Let me tell you, as simply and succinctly as I can, exactly how it works. Once upon a time, there was a people who lived free. Their government was a theocracy. God was their King. But God held, as a fundamental value, maximum freedom for the individual. To that end, he had delivered these people out of slavery. He gave them what came to be called “The Law of Liberty.” There was very little in this law about enforcement. Only when one man’s actions affected the liberty of others did judges come into play.

Their government, apart from God, was decentralized. Based on the ancient tribal system of family and blood kin, elders governed cities, towns, and communities. There was no central federal government.

But the people quickly learned that freedom had a price. There were bandits who had to be controlled. There were other organized governments that had to be fought off. Yes, God fought for them, but not while they sat at home. They had to go out in the field and fight for their freedom. As long as they stayed faithful to God, life worked. It wasn’t easy, but there is no way to make life easy while maintaining freedom.

That is one of the most important lessons you will ever learn, so let me repeat it. There is no way to make life easy while maintaining freedom. Freedom carries with it a burden, and in the process of time, mostly due to their own failures, freedom for these people was becoming a burden too heavy to bear.

So, a delegation of elders came to God’s man with a request. His name was Samuel. He was getting old, and his sons were starting to abuse their power, taking bribes and perverting justice. So they came to Samuel and asked for a king, like all the surrounding nations.

Be sure you grasp this. They had lived under a theocracy. God had been their only King since they left Egypt. And it wasn’t that he governed with a heavy hand. Far from it. As Jesus would later say, “My yoke is easy and my burden light.”

Let’s be sure we understand what was about to happen. God was going to give them the best man who could be found for the job. He would start out humble, little in his own eyes, even though he was a very tall, handsome man. What Samuel was to tell the elders was the inevitable result of giving this kind of power to a single man.

The prediction handed down by Samuel reads almost like a description of the government we live under today, even though we have a president, a Congress, and a Supreme Court, not a king. The problem is the underlying power structure. When you centralize power in man, you get corruption. Only under the rulership of God is there freedom.

It is a long and painful story, but it has to be told again to this generation.

Although he got a couple of points correct, like nearly all once part of the old WCG, but not part of the Living Church of God, Ronald Dart has rejected various aspects of proper church governance. And he also made a variety of biblically improper assertions that he apparently believes.

Although a bit longer (with certain improper points edited out), here is how I would have suggested that he worded his announcement instead:

With the stench of political corruption filling the air, is it fair to ask how we got to this miserable place? It isn’t hard to see the picture at the immediate level. Lust and vanity corrupt. And even money itself can be one form of lust (1 Timothy 6:10). It is as simple as that, and there is nothing especially new about it. I think the founders of American society understood this from history, and perhaps even from the Bible.  Greed destroys real freedom.

Let me tell you, as simply and succinctly as I can, exactly how it works. Once upon a time, there was a people who lived free. Their government was a theocracy. God was their King. But God held, as a fundamental value, that people were to love Him (Deuteronomy 6:4-5) and live by His way of life (Deuteronomy 4:4-8). To that end, he had delivered these people out of slavery. He gave them what came to be called “The Law of Liberty” (James 1:25;2:12).

Their government, contrary to the assertions of some, was not truly decentralized. Based on a biblical tribal system, appointed elders governed cities, towns, and communities. There were judges in the localities of all these tribes who in turn were under the authority of higher leaders, who were under the authority of the top human leader, who was under the authority of God, who also made His ways known through His written word (in a sense the “constitution” of the entire nation of ancient Israel).  Notice that this is clear from the Bible:

19 Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God. 20 And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do. 21 Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all times. Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you. 23 If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their place in peace.”

24 So Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26 So they judged the people at all times; the hard cases they brought to Moses, but they judged every small case themselves (Exodus 18:19-26).

9 The LORD your God will make you abound in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your land for good. For the LORD will again rejoice over you for good as He rejoiced over your fathers, 10 if you obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul (Deuteronomy 30:9-10).

But the people quickly learned that God’s form of government involved allowing them to be tested (Exodus 20:20; Judges 3:1-4). There were also bandits who had to be controlled. There were other organized governments that had to be fought off. Yes, God fought for them back then, but they were to obey Him fully.

If they would have remained faithful, they would not have had the enemies that they had, but they failed to fully do what He told them (Judges 1:21-36).  When they returned and became more faithful to God, life worked.  It wasn’t always easy, and they often strayed from it (Judges 2:10-23).

That is one of the most important lessons you will ever learn, so let me state it another way for emphasis. Living God’s way of life is hostile to the carnal mind (Romans 8:7).  Spiritual freedom carries with it difficulties in this life (John 16:33).  And few will find and stick with it in this age (Matthew 7:14).  Mostly due to their own failures, as influenced by Satan (e.g. Revelation 12:9) and the world’s society (e.g. 1 John 2:15-17), spiritual freedom for most people is a burden that many wrongly conclude is a burden too heavy to bear (cf. Matthew 11:28-30).

And while the ancient nation of Israel had many enemies remain because they failed to obey God (Judges 2:10-23, when a particular enemy arose (1 Samuel 12:12), they decided to do something that they had not done before.  They decided that they wanted a different form of governance.  They no longer had faith in God’s governance, even though God had his judges deliver them in the past:

11 “And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you dwelt in safety. 12 And when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the LORD your God was your king. (1 Samuel 12:11-12)

Thus, a delegation of elders came to God’s man with a request. His name was Samuel. He was getting old, and his sons were starting to abuse their power, taking bribes and perverting justice.  The people of Israel therefore felt that they had a pretty good reason for their request (1 Samuel 8:1-5). So they came to Samuel and asked for a king, like all the surrounding nations.

Be sure you grasp this. They had lived under a theocracy. God had been their only King since they left Egypt. And it wasn’t that he governed with a heavy hand. Far from it. As Jesus would later say, “My yoke is easy and my burden light” (Matthew 11:30).  But they did not have faith that the God that delivered them throughout their history was the one that they should trust any longer.

Let’s be sure we understand what was about to happen. They saw some corruption and believed that they had a better government plan.  And God was going to give them what they asked for.  What Samuel was first to do was to tell the elders was the inevitable result of rejecting God’s form of governance.  It was not because the king would have power (Moses and Joshua, for example, probably had vastly more power personally), but because the nation of Israel, like Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:6-7;1 Timothy 2:13-14), rejected what God said because of their own lusts and understandings.

Hear is what God told Samuel to tell them and what they responded with:

10 So Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who asked him for a king. 11 And he said, “This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. 12 He will appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. 16 And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. 18 And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the LORD will not hear you in that day.”

19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us, 20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” (1 Samuel 8:10-20)

The prediction handed down by Samuel reads almost like a description of the government we live under today, even though we have a president, a Congress, and a Supreme Court, not a king. The problem is the belief that humans know more about their governance than God does–humans often do not have faith to wait on God (cf. Galatians 5:5; Philippians 3:20).

When humans reject God’s governance, they get something worse. Only under the rulership of God is there freedom from the slavery of sin (Romans 6:17-18).

It is a long and painful story, but it has to be told again to this generation.

Now some think that the problem in ancient Israel was giving one human too much power, but that is not the actual problem as Moses had more power than Saul (the king that God had Samuel appoint) ever had.  The problem is that rejecting God’s form of governance means that people will also reject other laws and statutes.  Those that do simply do not have the faith that God wants His people to have.

Despite the fact that the nation of ancient Israel rejected proper biblical governance, notice that God said that He could (the warnings that He gave through Samuel prior, still being applicable though) bless the people:

13 …And take note, the LORD has set a king over you. 14 If you fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice, and do not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then both you and the king who reigns over you will continue following the LORD your God. 15 However, if you do not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD will be against you, as it was against your fathers. (1 Samuel 12:13-15)

Hence, it should be clear that hierarchical governance is not what God objects to,  but the rebelling against obeying His laws, statutes, and commands.

Thus, God will also bless those spiritually who live under human governments, including so-called democracies, monarchies, and dictatorships, if they will obey Him.

The fact that the vast majority of people in the United States have rejected God’s laws, statutes, and commands, we face the dire situation that the corruption in apparently all levels of American government will ultimately lead to the destruction of this nation.

But, individually, if willing and called of God, you can repent.  You can faithfully accept Christ, His ways, His form of governance within the true Church, and not be part of those who reject Him.

In the Book of Revelation Jesus warned those who were part of the Church of the Laodiceans to repent (Revelation 3:14-19) (those interested in learning more about church eras, may wish to read The Churches of Revelation 2 & 3).  Most do not realize that the Greek term Laodicea is made up of two words that essentially mean “people decide” or “judgment of the people” (see also The Laodicean Church Era).

In the 21st century, most who claim to be part of the true Church of God have rejected biblical hierarchical governance and have decided for themselves which form of governance and what work that God wants them to be part of, instead of being faithful to the form of governance and the work that He has instilled in the Philadelphia portion of the Church of God, which today is represented by the Living Church of God.

Now, this week I received emails from at least three former WCG members who like the information on the cogwriter.com website, but who complained that I am sometimes report negatively about others who were once part of WCG that have different beliefs.  The truth is that I often point out from scripture where other groups doctrines/practices/priorities are in error–whether or not that group claims to be part of the COG.  None of those critics responded with anything specific that indicated I was in error with what I pointed out–they just seem to think that they can pick and choose and decide for themselves what is right.  And as far as my writings about other groups, they seem to prefer “smooth things”, which is not biblically appropriate for me to do (cf. Isaiah 30:10).  Those who prefer to believe others may wish to read the article Why Be Concerned About False and Heretical Leaders?

Many seem to forget that Jesus repeatedly pointed out the errors in doctrine/practices/priorities with the religious leaders of His day (e.g.  Matthew 23:13-36).  Although imperfectly, I am trying to follow Christ in that (cf. 1 Corinthians 11:1; Jude 3).

Furthermore, Jesus was the one who warned the Christians of Laodicean to repent (Revelation 3:19) and the Philadelphians to hold fast (Revelation 3:11).  I try to advise the same thing.

The doctrine of proper church governance is the one that truly has been rejected by nearly all who are not supportive of LCG (there are some who may be confused, while nearly all others have clearly rejected it)–but we in LCG do hold fast to it.

Herbert W. Armstrong was quite correct when he repeatedly taught that is was primarily the rejection of biblical governance that cause most people to leave the Philadelphia portion of the true Church of God in his latter years.

I will also state that this seems to be the case today in the 21st century.  But that does not mean that you need to be among those who decide rejecting proper biblical governance.
