France, NATO, and the Invasion of the USA

Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France
French President Nicolas Sarkozy

COGwriter

It was recently reported that France may join NATO and that a NATO command post with Europeans may be based in the USA.  Here are two related stories:

France eyeing NATO post in US

Associated Press – Feb 5, 2009
France is in talks to take control of two NATO command posts, including a prestigious one in the U.S. that has never been led by a foreign commander, defense officials in Europe said Thursday.Such a move could also be accompanied by the injection of hundreds more French troops into NATO, a European defense official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because no deal has been finalized.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been looking to tighten France’s links with NATO, particularly ahead of its April summit that will celebrate the alliance’s 60th anniversary.

The European official and a French military official said France is in talks to put a French general in charge of two command posts: one in Norfolk, Virginia, responsible for laying out the long-term vision of the Atlantic alliance; the other an operational command based in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

The French official also spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are still under way.

The Norfolk command, known as the Allied Command Transformation, is particularly prestigious. It is responsible for helping lay out the alliance’s doctrine and for training and preparing for future scenarios, among other duties.

The U.S. and U.K. Must Oppose French Plans to Weaken NATO

Heritage Foundation – Feb 10, 2009

The Obama Administration has announced it will back the full reintegration of France into the NATO command structure, with French officers reportedly in line to take two senior Alliance command positions: Allied Command Transformation (one of NATO’s two supreme commands, based in Norfolk, Virginia) and Joint Command Lisbon (one of NATO’s three main operations headquarters, which also commands the NATO Rapid Reaction Force).[1]

This is a highly significant development that would put France at the heart of NATO military planning and reform proposals and represents an ill-thought-out and risky concession by Washington to the Sarkozy administration.

In a major speech at the Munich Security Conference on February 7,[2] Vice President Joe Biden welcomed France’s decision “to fully participate in NATO structures” and also made it clear that the United States will “support the further strengthening of European defense, an increased role for the European Union in preserving peace and security, [and] a fundamentally stronger NATO-EU partnership.” Biden’s remarks echoed the views of British Defence Secretary John Hutton, who recklessly backed French plans for a European Union army last October…

America Has Little to Gain–and a Lot to Lose

It is likely that the Obama Administration will regard France’s reintegration into NATO as a diplomatic masterstroke. The Administration will claim that it has rebuilt the Franco-American relationship in a mutually beneficial way, and Sarkozy will in turn claim that it tangibly demonstrates France’s commitment to standing alongside America.

However, the Administration must ask itself what the U.S. actually gains from such a quid pro quo…

French reintegration into NATO command structures offers little additional value to Washington but gives immense momentum to French ambitions for an autonomous EU foreign and defense policy. When French presidents talk about European foreign policy, they more often than not mean French foreign policy. Equally, when Sarkozy talks about increasing European security capabilities, he means decreasing American involvement in Europe…

Simply Unacceptable

It is difficult to see how a greater EU defense capability will actually strengthen the NATO mission or the broader transatlantic alliance. Indeed, encouraging a bigger military role for the EU can only make NATO’s task more complicated. http://www.heritage.org/Research/Europe/wm2285.cfm.

The USA has a lot more to lose than most news analysts will consider.

It has been my personal belief for over two decades that when the Europeans ultimately invade the USA, they will do it by surprise and likely under the pretext of conducting joint military exercises with the USA on USA soil.

And while that scenario might not come to pass, the recent news suggests that this is a certainly plausible speculation.

The USA is on shaky grounds and ultimately is likely to rely on some (like the Euroopeans) that will turn upon it.  And I believe that the USA will be taken off guard by this invasion (which I also suspect will be supported by ground troops likely based in Mexico).

The stage for the destruction of the USA is being set more and more lately.

CT, UCG, and Valentine’s Day

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

COGwriter

Each year that I have been paying attention to its site, the falsely named Christianity Today has promoted the non-Christian holiday called Valentine’s Day as well as often gifts related it.

The latest CT article, in a sense, is an all-time low as it not only does not hint that Valentine’s might be wrong, it ties God to something that He should not be tied to.  Anyway, here are some quotes from the CT article:

Valentines from Heaven

How God reminded nine singles of his love for them on Valentine’s Day

Since I’m single, I spent February 14 trying to concentrate on the fact that God is my valentine…

When I came home after a long day of work and school on Valentine’s Day, there was a package of cookies and a card from my parents waiting outside my door…

Being single can sometimes stink on Valentine’s Day, and to be honest, I was kind of expecting it to again this year. However, God had something else in mind…When I got back to my home, I received a phone call from a friend wishing me a happy Valentine’s Day…Something happened in my spirit and in my soul on Valentines Day.

I never look forward to Valentine’s Day, and I felt like I was being tortured all day as I had to sit and listen to everyone else’s plans for the evening while I had none. One way for me to cope is to do nice things for others, so the Sunday before Valentine’s Day I gave my students candy and sent them cards. But after work on Valentine’s Day I felt a little restless, so I went to the mall. I asked God if I could get something for myself. Of course, I was surrounded by last-minute shoppers buying gifts for their loved ones. I felt like such a geek! Here I was buying a Valentine’s Day gift for myself. But I went ahead and bought a bracelet. I figure I’ll never have anything nice if I’m always waiting for someone else to do the buying…

I’m surrounded by couples, and on Valentine’s Day it becomes even more obvious…

The night before Valentine’s Day, I attended my church’s Wednesday night service. In his closing prayer, our pastor asked God to bless and comfort those of us who are single and who might struggle with loneliness on Valentine’s Day…

The day before Valentine’s Day, I was driving home from work and suddenly heard a loud CRACK. I knew that I’d taken my first rock and would probably have a horrible scratch on my vehicle. When I looked for the damage I found it on the windshield, just left and well below my field of vision. When I studied the hit, I realized it was in a heart-shaped design. What others may see as a fault is now an awesome sign to me—a reminder of my Savior’s love.

Do not the editors at Christianity Today realize that more and more, their form of Protestantism is closer and closer to secular and pagan views?

Those who do not claim to know Christ treat Valentine’s Day pretty much the same as those in that CT article–except that they do not take, directly nor indirectly, the blasphemous position that God is somehow their Valentine or that the day is of particular importance to Him.

This situation with CT pretty much reminds me of the situation in the Apostle Paul’s day:

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles (1 Cor 5:1).

The difference is that there were at least many true Christians in Corinth at that time, but this could not be the case with CT.

Valentine’s day is a renamed pagan holiday that encouraged sexual immortality.  Christians can love God any day of the year, but to suggest that God is their Valentine or uses the day to encourage the observance of Valentine’s day is totally inappropriate.

UCG today sent out an email stating:

Valentine’s Day may be acceptable to millions of people, but not to God. It substitutes human reasoning for God’s truth. It focuses the attention of people on infatuation, not a deep abiding love, on “getting love,” not giving or sacrificing for others.

God warns all who claim to represent Him, who claim to be Christians, to avoid the ways of the ancient pagans and their counterfeit holidays and feasts: “Observe and obey all these words which I command you, that it may go well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

“When the Lord your God cuts off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you displace them and dwell in their land, take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’

“You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods . . . Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it” (Deuteronomy 12:28-32, emphasis added).

In fact, God told the Israelites to eradicate all elements of pagan worship among them (see verses 1-4).

And that is correct–though Valentine’s is popular, it is pagan.  Thus, Valentine’s Day is not an observance for those who pay attention to the Bible.

Perhaps I should quote something about the origins of Valentine’s Day from the old World Book Encyclopedia (Valentine’s Day. Volume 19. 1966, pp.205-206):

…the customs of the day have nothing to do with the lives of the saints. They probably come from an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia which took place every February 15. The festival honored Juno, the Roman goddess of women and marriage, and Pan, the god of nature…The Romans celebrated their feast of Lupercalia as a lovers’ festival for young people. Young men and women chose partners for the festival by drawing names from a box…After the spread of Christianity, churchmen tried to give Christian meaning to the pagan festival. In 496, Pope Gelasius changed the Lupercalia festival of February 15 to Saint Valentine’s Day February 14. But the sentimental meaning of the old festival has remained to the present time. Historians disagree about the identity of St. Valentine”.

Furthermore it also states,

LUPERCALIA…was celebrated on February 15 in honor of Faunus, a rural Italian god. Faunus was later identified with Pan, the god of herds and fertility…Priests…ran around striking all the women the met (Lupercalia. Volume 12. 1966, p.456).

Notice what the Roman Catholics teach,

The Catholic Church no longer officially honors St. Valentine, but the holiday has both Roman and Catholic roots…

The roots of St. Valentine’s Day lie in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on Feb. 15. For 800 years the Romans had dedicated this day to the god Lupercus. On Lupercalia, a young man would draw the name of a young woman in a lottery and would then keep the woman as a sexual companion for the year (The Origins of St. Valentine’s Day. http://www.americancatholic.org/Features/ValentinesDay/, January 31, 2004).

Valentine’s Day is not a real Christian Holy Day.  Those who fall into it are, in essence, not different than the pagan Gentiles who observed the Lupercalia during Paul’s day.

Please notice something that the Apostle John wrote:

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever (1 John 2:15-17).

And longing to be part of the world’s Valentine’s Day culture certainly would seem to be loving the world and the things in it.

Drought, Wheat, & China

Wheat

COGwriter

Two weeks ago I reported about drought in Argentina and its effect on wheat production there (see Argentina, Drought, & Wheat), but there is a potentially bigger situation that could dramatically impact the USA: China’s drought:

Drought threatens China’s wheat crop

The region that produces 95 percent of the country’s wheat is facing its worst drought in 50 years.
Christian Science Monitor – Feb 11, 2009

Liu Shanni yanks a yellowed seedling from her plot of wheat, brushes the dusty soil from its withered roots, and tosses it away disdainfully.

“Dead,” she spits. “If it doesn’t rain soon, I’ll have no harvest at all.”

Nor will millions of other peasant farmers in the drought-stricken belt of northern China that normally produces 95 percent of the country’s winter wheat. “Winter crops are entering a critical period,” the head of China’s drought-relief efforts, Er Jingping, said on Tuesday. “If it does not rain in the next 15 days, we will face an even more daunting task.”

The most prolonged drought for half a century has parched fields and stunted crops in this remote village at a particularly difficult time. Many of the residents who normally migrate to the cities, and send money home, have lost their jobs as China’s economic growth slows. Suddenly, the wheat harvest here in Zhaogou matters again as a question of subsistence. http://features.csmonitor.com/environment/2009/02/11/drought-threatens-china%E2%80%99s-wheat-crop/

The Geopolitics of Food Scarcity

In some countries social order has already begun to break down in the face of soaring food prices and spreading hunger. Could the worldwide food crisis portend the collapse of global civilization?
Spiegel – Feb 11, 2009

One of the toughest things for us to do is to anticipate discontinuity. Whether on a personal level or on a global economic level, we typically project the future by extrapolating from the past. Most of the time this works well, but occasionally we experience a discontinuity that we failed to anticipate. The collapse of civilization is such a case. It is no surprise that many past civilizations failed to grasp the forces and recognize signs that heralded their undoing. More than once it was shrinking food supplies that brought about their downfall.

Does our civilization face a similar fate? Until recently it did not seem possible, but our failure to deal with the environmental trends that are undermining the world food economy — most importantly falling water tables, eroding soils, and rising temperatures — forces the conclusion that such a collapse is possible.

These trends are taking a significant toll on food production: In six of the last eight years world grain production has fallen short of consumption, forcing a steady drawdown in stocks. World carryover stocks of grain (the amount remaining from the previous harvest when the new harvest begins) have dropped to only 60 days of consumption, a near record low. Meanwhile, in 2008 world grain prices have climbed to the highest level ever…

No country is immune to the effects of tightening food supplies, not even the United States.

If China turns to the world market for massive quantities of grain, as it recently has done for soybeans, it will undoubtedly look to the United States, which dominates world grain exports. For US consumers, the prospect of competing for the US grain harvest with 1.3 billion Chinese consumers with fast-rising incomes is a nightmare scenario. It would be tempting for the United States to restrict exports, but this is not an option with China which now holds well over one trillion US dollars. Like it or not, US consumers will share their grain with Chinese consumers regardless of how high food prices rise.

If the food crisis worsens, national restrictions on grain exports coupled with various bilateral arrangements could tie down much of the exportable supply of grain, making it increasingly difficult if not impossible for weaker, less affluent countries to find grain to import. Many countries heavily dependent on imports could be left out, and the result would be hundreds of millions of desperate people. Desperate people do desperate things: They riot, they fight over food, they overthrow governments, and they mass migrate to more food-secure countries.

In many countries the social order has already begun to break down in the face of soaring food prices and spreading hunger. Deadly food riots broke out in a number of countries in 2008. In Egypt several people died in fights in government-subsidized bread lines. Food riots in Yemen turned deadly, taking at least a dozen lives. In Cameroon the food riot death toll was twice as high. http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,606937,00.html

One of the many problems of going into debt is that the creditors expect to be paid back.

The more wheat that China buys, the higher the cost to American consumers.  Furthermore, China has the potential to buy up all the wheat that the USA produces–and while politically I do not believe this will be allowed to happen–if it did, we could have starvation in the USA.  And if the politicians stop China from making those purchases, the entire USA economy could massively collapse if China dumped its USA dollar (including treasury bills and even stocks) holdings in retaliation.

The USA has embarked on slippery and very dangerous path with its borrow our way out of this crisis mentality.  And while I believe it may work for a while, it is setting the USA up for sudden destruction.

Some Better Economic News for Israel

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Jerusalem

COGwriter

The economic news in most parts of the world has been somewhat dismal lately, but there is some better news today for the nation of Israel:

Huge Israeli Gas Find Even More Massive Than Expected

Israel National News – Feb 11, 2009

A massive natural gas find off the coast of Haifa which was lauded as capable of fueling all of Israel for 15 years is actually more than 60 percent larger than originally estimated, according to the American partner in the drill, Noble Energy Inc.

Israeli companies Isramco Negev 2, Delek Drilling, Avner Oil Exploration, and Dor Gas Exploration had the majority of the stake on the dig – named Tamar-1 – which is estimated at a potential of 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That estimate is up from January, at which time the partners believed the well contained 3 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The team will keep their drilling rig in the area for two more wells they believe may be present as well.

“The implications of this discovery to Israel cannot be overstated,” said Noble Energy Chief Executive Officer Charles Davidson, in a statement issued after following the revision of the estimate. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/129893

Good news is nice, especially when there has been so much negative economic news.

All World Currencies Can Have Problems

COGwriter

Last night on MSNBC I saw a chilling interview that explained how close the world economy came to dying in September 2008.  Here are three related stories (including the link to the video) that were also in the news late yesterday:

Paul Kanjorski: Financial Crisis of 2008 (Video)

By Maggie M. Thorton

Representative Paul Kanjorski (D-PA) appeared on C-Span on January 27, 2009 and told an astonishing story of how the financial crisis started…

The bottom line, according to Kanjorski, is that on September 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. some $550 billion dollars disappeared from America’s money market accounts – all within a one to two hour time frame.

The U.S. Treasury poured $105 billion dollars into the system and realized they couldn’t stop the drain. They closed down all accounts. Without doing so, they estimated by that afternoon, $5.5 trillion dollars would have been drawndown, resulting in the collapse of our political and financial system – and not just the U.S. but around the world. http://www.rightpundits.com/?p=2863

The day the global economy almost died

It’s Paul Kanjorski, no stranger to blabbing about unpleasant truths, regaling C-SPAN last month with the economic equivalent of the Stanislav Petrov story. Remember the reports that trickled out in mid-September about a harrowing briefing Paulson and Bernanke had given to Congress? The specifics were never revealed, but whatever they said scared the…attendees:

“When you listened to him describe it you gulped,” said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York.

As Senator Christopher J. Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut and chairman of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, put it Friday morning on the ABC program “Good Morning America,” the congressional leaders were told “that we’re literally maybe days away from a complete meltdown of our financial system, with all the implications here at home and globally.”

Mr. Schumer added, “History was sort of hanging over it, like this was a moment.”

When Mr. Schumer described the meeting as “somber,” Mr. Dodd cut in. “Somber doesn’t begin to justify the words,” he said. “We have never heard language like this.”

Take a drink of something hard and watch from 2:20 to 3:45. Now you know the specifics. This Journal story from that week described the financial turmoil through Wednesday afternoon, at which point \$144.5 billion had already been yanked out of money markets, and then skipped ahead to Paulson and Bernanke meeting with Congress on Thursday night without a mention of what happened in between. That’s how closely guarded this secret must have been. http://community2.myfoxdfw.com/_The-day-the-global-economy-almost-died/BLOG/182501/78592.html

KANJORSKI: On Thursday at about 11 o’clock in the morning the Federal Reserve noticed a tremendous drawdown of money market accounts in the United States, to the tune of $550 billion was being drawn out in a matter of an hour or two.  The Treasury opened up its window to help.  It pumped $105 billion in the system and quickly realized that they could not stem the tide; we were having an electronic run on the banks.  They decided to close the operation, close down the money accounts and announce a guarantee of $250,000 per account so there wouldn’t be further panic out there.

If they had not done that, their estimation was that by two o’clock that afternoon, five-and-a-half trillion dollars would have been drawn out of the money market system of the United States, would have collapsed the entire economy of the United States, and within 24 hours the world economy would have collapsed.  It would have been the end of our economic system and our political system as we know it.  We’re really no better off today than we were three months ago because we’ve had a decrease in the equity positions of banks because other assets are going sour by the moment.

(The video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD8viQ_DhS4)

While humans will take credit for stopping this disaster, the fact is that God is not ready for the Europeans to lead their New World Order.  This order is not some United Nations based group (though it is of little doubt that the UN will support it), but will be a revived Roman Empire based out of Europe.

The time is almost here for the United States to completely lose its position as the economic engine of the entire world.

In order to try to keep that position, the US Senate yesterday passed a bill to increase USA debt by another 800 plus billion dollars.  USA President Obama has stated that trillion dollar deficits are expected now for several years.

As I have mentioned before, this is setting the USA and its Anglo-Allies up for a prophesied destruction.

Notice this warning in Isaiah 30:12-13:

12 Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel:

“Because you despise this word, And trust in oppression and perversity, And rely on them,  13 Therefore this iniquity shall be to you Like a breach ready to fall, A bulge in a high wall, Whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant.

Of course, more and more, the Anglo-American nations are trusting in policies that encourage perversity. While there is oppression in these nations (especially racial), the Hebrew word for it can also be translated “unjust gain”.  This can include not just the historical exploitation of of various peoples, but can probably also include the fact that the economies of the Anglo-American nations for the past few decades has been benefiting from the gains of foreigners loaning money to it.

Habakkuk 2:3,6,7, which is consistent with Isaiah 30:12-13, also teaches that the destruction will be sudden. And that it will occur at the end times–and it will happen to a nation in great debt:

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…
6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases
What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you (Habakkuk 2:3,6-8).

The above prophecy will be fulfilled at the time of the end–and this prophecy will impact the USA and its Anglo-allies. It makes little sense that it would be directed towards the modern nation of Israel as it does not have enemy creditors. It must be a nation or group of nations with some prominence.

It is the the United States and its Anglo-allies that have loaded pledges of debt in these end times that they really do not expect to pay back. In that respect they have recently plundered many nations.

And once the creditors finally get fed up, notice that it will happen suddenly and the world order will change.  The USA and its Anglo-Allies will not only not be economic powers, they will no longer be their own nations any more.

The world almost had the collapse of the USA based economy in September 2008, and its collapse would have been sudden.  And now the USA seems determined to set itself up for sudden destruction (cf. also 1 Thessalonians 5:3).  But, as certain prophetic events have still not taken place, the end is not yet–but probably sometime next decade, the end of the United States and its Anglo-allies will come.

The good news, however, is that the 3 1/2 years later, the real new world order will be established as Jesus will return and set up His millennial kingdom.  And while many now scoff and ridicule this truth, the fact is that this is the position of the Bible and was the majority position of those who professed Christ in the first few centuries after Jesus’ death (for details, see Did The Early Church Teach Millenarianism?).

Until that time, the economies of almost all nations may be in for a wild ride.

Japan Contracting

Despite high savings rates and extensive industrial capacity, Japan is having its own problems with the economy:

Japan faces ‘unimaginable’ contraction

Financial Times – Feb 9, 2009

Japan’s economy faces an “unimaginable” contraction, the chief economist of its central bank warned on Monday, as figures revealed surging bankruptcies and a big fall in machinery orders.

The warning from Kazuo Momma, head of the Bank of Japan’s research and statistics department, underscored the gloom surrounding the world’s second-largest economy as export orders dry up, companies shut down production lines and consumers stop spending.

Japan, where industrial output plunged a record 9.6 per cent month on month in December, is due to announce fourth-quarter gross domestic product data next week. Polls of economists suggest GDP will have fallen more than 3 per cent compared with the previous quarter – an annualised decline of more than 10 per cent.

“From October to December the scale of negative growth [in GDP] may have been unimaginable – and we have to consider the possibility that there could be even greater decline between January and March,” Mr Momma said in a speech on Monday.

His remarks came as a private research company reported a 16 per cent year-on-year rise in the number of bankruptcies among Japanese companies to 1,360 in January, the highest level for six years. Total debts left by failed companies rose 44 per cent from a year earlier to Y839bn ($9.2bn), Tokyo Shoko Research said…

The Japanese gloom was replicated in Taiwan, Asia’s sixth-largest economy. In January exports fell by 44.1 per cent from a year ago, the biggest decline since government records began in 1972. It was the fifth consecutive month that exports have shrunk.http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/97ad993c-f6b9-11dd-8a1f-0000779fd2ac.html

There are prophecies in the Old and New Testament that seem to refer to the nation of Japan.

Because of them, It appears likely that ultimately Japam will likely ally militarily with Taiwan, China, and other nations in Asia.  But prior to that, it will likely shift its export emphasis to Europe.

New Nordic Military for Civil Unrest?

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Northern Shore of Reykjavík, Iceland

The Nordic nations appear to want to improve military cooperation under a new plan in order to deal with civil unrest as was reported today:

Report Calls for Common Nordic Task Force

Norway’s former Defense and Foreign Minister Thorvald Stoltenberg has proposed a 13-point plan for military and civilian cooperation between the five Nordic countries.

Spiegel – Feb 9, 2009

One of the Nordic region’s grey eminences, former Norwegian Defence and Foreign Minister Thorvald Stoltenberg, has presented his report on potential Nordic cooperation in foreign and security policy, including proposals for a joint military and civilian force that could help stabilise countries in the throes of national unrest.

Commissioned by the Nordic foreign ministers, Stoltenberg’s 13-point plan includes proposals for a Nordic Stabilisation Task Force to address some of the new security challenges facing the UN and the international community that would be deployed to states affected by major internal unrest…

Of the five Nordic countries, Denmark, Iceland and Norway are members of NATO; Denmark, Sweden and Finland are members of the European Union. Although Denmark has an opt-out on defence cooperation, none are members of the African Union and all are members of the United Nations and the OSCE.

The proposals, presented to the five Nordic foreign ministers in Oslo Monday, also suggest that the Nordic countries should take on part of the responsibility for air surveillance and air patrolling in Icelandic air space, initially deploying personnel to the Keflavik base. Iceland has no military of its own…

The Nordic countries are Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden and include representation for the Aaland Islands (Finland), Greenland (Denmark) and the Faroe Islands (Denmark). http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,606505,00.html

I have mentioned unrest in Iceland (Situations Worse in Iceland & South Africa) and Europe (Civil Unrest in Europe) in the past couple of weeks.  There is little doubt that the unrest in Iceland is a factor in today’s news.

What many throughout the world do not seem to realize is that there are quite a few private Catholic prophecies that have long predicted that there would be civil unrest in Europe and that this will lead to the rise of one some call the Great Monarch (see also Civil Unrest in Europe).  This Great Monarch seems to be the same person that the Bible warns against as the final King of the North and the Beast leader.

Australia Fires & Ron Weinland

The fires in Australia are a concern:

By MERAIAH FOLEY

Published: February 8, 2009

SYDNEY, Australia — A series of wildfires that tore across the southern state of Victoria over the weekend killed at least 131 people, the state police said Monday, making it the country’s deadliest firestorm.

Two entire towns were destroyed and at least 750 homes were leveled, along with more than 770 square miles of forest and farmland. Hot winds of more than 62 miles per hour and temperatures that peaked at 117 degrees in Melbourne on Saturday fanned the blazes, some of which the police suspected were set deliberately…

Fires are common during Australia’s hot, dry summers, when the oil-rich eucalyptus forests become especially vulnerable during lightning strikes or sparks thrown from farm equipment. But a prolonged drought and the weekend’s searing temperatures made recent conditions particularly bad…

The deadliest previous blazes were the “Ash Wednesday” fires of 1983, when 75 people were killed and hundreds of homes were destroyed across southern Australia. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/09/world/asia/09australia.html?_r=1&partner=rssemc=rss

LCG announced the following about them:

Bruce Tyler reports: We are having a hot spell in the weather in this part of the world.  Adelaide reached a high of 114.26 Fahrenheit on January 28. Melbourne is also very similar.  Train lines have buckled, throwing things into chaos as well. The big worry right now is the potential for bush fires.  Everything is so dry. Here is a bit of the news covering the subject:

SOUTH Australia will suffer six consecutive days of 40C-plus temperatures [104F-115F] in the hottest such stretch in a century—and yesterday the mercury has topped 45C [114.26F]. Not since 1908 has Adelaide recorded such a long run of temperatures over the 40C [104F] mark. The stretch includes Tuesday’s top of 43.2C [109.76F] and Wednesday’s excruciating temperature of 45.7C at 3:31pm. So far, today is the third-hottest day ever recorded in Adelaide. The other two were in January, 1939—when the mercury reached the all-time of 46.1C [115F]…. This year, the worst six days come in the middle of an official heat wave (temperatures of 35C [95F] or above) of at least nine days. Forecasters are so far unable to predict when the heat will ease…

I was not going to mention Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God today, but notice what the Don’t Drink the Flavor Aid site reported about his latest sermon:

False Prophet Ronald Weinland was in Bloomington IL this weekend. He read a letter from his Australian evangelist Wayne Matthews which proof-texted the 3rd thunder describing the drought in Australia.

Ronald Weinland has attempted to prove much of his error from scripture and take twist news items to fit his changing scenarios.  But basically, Ronald Weinland almost always tends to say that his writings and his interpretations are right no matter what the Bible says and no matter that he has repeatedly been proven wrong.

The fact is that the world is in for some perilous times, and it is sad that Ronald Weinland gets some to follow him because of that.

Notice what Ronald Weinland taught in a sermon given March 29, 2008:

If by Pentecost I’m just going to make this real clear to everyone. If by Pentecost it is not powerfully and abundantly clear that there has been a great deal of destruction that will clearly encompass a third of all plant life in the US and at least the clear results of this mingled with blood the death of very much animal life and the beginning of large numbers of human life then I will stop preaching. Just so all the critics and everyone out there will understand. I am true to my word in these things. OK? And for all the critics if by the end of July and for most likely around Pentecost if nothing has clearly caused great destruction and death I will make it very clear that I was a false prophet. I will do exactly what I said I would do on all of those interviews that I have held; to do less, aah well, would be quite insane. (Weinland R. Three More Weeks–quote from near the 1 hour 28 minute point from the CGPFK website version. Sermon given March 29, 2008).

Since Pentecost in 2008 was June 8th, by mid-June Ronald Weinland was to stop preaching according to his own words.

And by mid-July 2008 apologize and publicly admit his error.

Instead on April 19th, he pronounced curses on his critics (see Ronald Weinland Again Calls for Death) and by April 26th, he changed one date. And by late June 2008, he changed his dates. And in August 2008, he declared his ideas about critics to be the “50th truth” he restored to the church.

So, while the situation in Australia is a concern, Ronald Weinland’s interpretations of them should not be trusted.  They are not part of the third thunder as Ronald Weinland is now apparently claiming.

He has made many false claims.  Ronald Weinland is NOT one of the two witnesses.  Nor did the Great Tribulation begin last year as he is still claiming that it did (for some details, see the older item The 1260 Days Did Not Start This Month Ronald Weinland).

Several articles of possibly related interest include:

Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland falsely claims to be one of the two witnesses God is raising up and that the end will come in 2008. Is he a false prophet? He has at least one other view that suggests that he is not part of the COG.

Should Christians Exchange Valentine’s Cards?

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

COGwriter

Valentine’s Day is a Roman holiday that many will observe next Saturday.  Here is a question and answer on whether or not it is appropriate for Christians to exchange cards on that day from the Living Church of God:

Question:
Is it proper for Christians to exchange cards on Valentine’s Day, February 14? I have been told that it is a Christian holiday, named after a saint.

Answer:

Most people take for granted the idea of Valentine’s Day as the “lover’s holiday.” It is quite common for young children in school to exchange cards on this occasion, and for lovers to exchange gifts such as candy or flowers.

But what is the real origin of this popular holiday, and why is it known as “Saint” Valentine’s Day?

Many reference works trace the name of the holiday to a third-century Roman Catholic martyr by the name of Valentine. Note, however, what the Encyclopaedia Britannica says on the subject: “St. Valentine’s Day as a lovers’ festival and the modern tradition of sending valentine cards have no relation to the saints but, rather, seem to be connected either with the Roman [sexual] fertility festival of the Lupercalia (February 15) or with the mating season of birds” (15th ed., vol. 10, p. 336).

In this “Lupercalia… the names of young women were put into a box and drawn out by men as chance directed” (Encyclopedia Americana, “St. Valentine’s Day”). This pairing off was, of course, linked with sexual immorality. That is where the phrase “Be my valentine” originated!

But where did the Lupercalia itself come from? It was celebrated in honor of the god Pan! In fact, “the name seems to be borrowed from the Greek name of Pan, Lycaeus, from lukos, a wolf… because Pan, as god of shepherds, protected sheep from the rapacity of wolves” (Lempdere’s Classical Dictonary, p. 339).

Who was Pan? “The worship, and the different functions of Pan, are derived from the mythology of the ancient Egyptians…. He was worshipped with the greatest solemnity over all Egypt.… He was the emblem of [fertility]” (Lempdere’s, p. 439). The legend of Pan as the hunter of wolves and protector of the flocks originates in the ancient biblical account of Nimrod, the “mighty hunter” against God (Genesis 10:9) and builder of the Tower of Babel (cf. Alexander Hislop, The Two Babylons, 1917).

This wicked ruler Nimrod was the original lupercus (“wolf hunter”) and valentine (“strong man”). He is the same figure worshiped by the Phoenecians as Baal, and appears elsewhere in Scripture under the name Tammuz (Ezekiel 8:14). This Nimrod was no saint—he was a licentious man, and an enemy of God, who came to be worshiped by the pagans after his death. He is more accurately a symbol of lust and violence, rather than love.

In 496ad, Pope Gelasius “Christianized” the pagan Lupercalia by changing its name. He also shifted its day of observance from February 15 on the sunset-to-sunset calendar, to February 14 on the Roman calendar—thus keeping in place the timing of the old Lupercalia’s evening celebration.

The early Roman Catholic Church, seeking the allegiance of the pagan populace, attempted to “Christianize” the Roman Lupercalia festival along with other popular pagan celebrations. Purged of their most heinous elements and given new “Christian” names, celebrations popular from pagan antiquity continued among the people.

Was it right to do this? No! God instructs His people to take a far different approach: “Learn not the way of the heathen” (Jeremiah 10:2, KJV; cf. Deuteronomy 12:29–32). Instead of involving ourselves in commercialized holidays that are simply sanitized versions of ancient pagan sex rites, let us follow the ways of our Creator.

Valentine’s Day is a pagan, not Christian, holiday. It is essentially based upon lust/lawlessness and even though many of the practices once associated with it have been toned down, it still does not edify Christ.

CCG Takes A Couple of Shots at Me and Binitarianism

History of Early Christianity

COGwriter

Was the early Church binitarian, unitarian, or trinitarian? CCG’s Wade Cox of Australia insists that it was unitarian.

Well, despite claims to the contrary, scholars of all sorts have seen that those who professed Christ shortly after the death of the Apostle John made statements supportive of a Binitarian View of the Godhead.

Interestingly, in his message yesterday, CCG’s Wade Cox gave me a new title when he wrote:

…the LCG Binitarian “Oracle” on all things Bob Thiel…

While I found that a bit amusing, I then noticed that in an earlier post, Wade Cox’s website also stated:

B. Thiel, Ph.D. …writes as an independent writer and claims membership of the Living Church of God, has written two articles seeking to claim that the early Church was Binitarian. The articles are titled:
“Binitarianism: One God, Two Beings Before the Beginning” at:
https://www.cogwriter.com/binitarian.htm and
Unitarianism:  Is it Taught in the Bible And Was it the Position of the True Church?” at:
https://www.cogwriter.com/unitarian.htm

We have re-issued the paper Binitarianism and Trinitarianism (No. 76) to deal with this fiction of the WCG offshoots. It is a complete fabrication to assert that the early Church was Binitarian and an examination of the papers will demonstrate that fact.

Well, let’s see if he is correct that the idea that early Christians were binitarian is a “complete fabrication”.  I decided to glace at Wade Cox’s paper, but noticed that he ignored the earliest historical writings from the second and third centuries on the Godhead.  Instead he seems to prefer to take shots against Herbert W. Armstrong and me (his writings also show that he has reached inaccurate conclusions about my amount of formal theological training, which is substantially higher than he indicates) instead of showing the earliest historical evidence of the belief on the Godhead.

For example, he ignored quoting from the document known as  “the oldest complete Christian sermon that has survived” (Holmes M.W. The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations, 2nd ed. Baker Books, Grand Rapids, 2004, p. 102)–outside those in the Bible–sometimes erroneously referred to as Second Letter of Clement.  Perhaps he ignored it because it supports binitarianism?

It was given perhaps with a year or so of John’s death (thus may be towards the end of the time of Ephesus), begins with the following:

Brothers, we ought so to think of Jesus Christ, as of God, as “Judge of the living and the dead (An Ancient Christian Sermon (2 Clement), 1:1. In Holmes M.W. The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations, 2nd ed. Baker Books, Grand Rapids, 2004, p. 107)

So then, brothers, if we do the will of God our Father…(An Ancient Christian Sermon (2 Clement), 14:1. In Holmes M.W. The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations, 2nd ed. Baker Books, Grand Rapids, 2004, p.121).

Now the church, being spiritual was revealed in the flesh of Christ, thereby showing us that if any of us guard her in the flesh and do not corrupt her, he will receive her back again in the Holy Spirit. For this flesh is a copy of the Spirit. No one, therefore, who corrupts the copy, will share in the original. This, therefore, is what he means, brothers: guard the flesh, in order that you may receive of the Spirit. Now if we say that the flesh is the church and the Spirit is Christ, then the one who abuses the flesh hath abuses the church. Consequently such a person will not receive the Spirit, which is Christ. So great is the life and immortality which this flesh is able to receive, if the Holy Spirit is closely joined with it, that no one is able to proclaim or to tell “what things the Lord hath prepared” for his chosen ones (An Ancient Christian Sermon (2 Clement), 14:3-5. In Holmes M.W. The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations, 2nd ed. Baker Books, Grand Rapids, 2004, p.121).

Thus, the oldest preserved sermon (which can be found in its entirety at Ancient “Christian” Sermon) says to think of Jesus as God and that the Father is God, but it never indicates that the Holy Spirit is God. This is consistent with the binitarian, not unitarian, view.

Polycarp was known as the Bishop of Smyrna and probably the first physical head (under Jesus Christ) of the era when Smyrna dominated (beginning in the second century).  He was neither trinitarian nor unitarian according to various historical documents. The following quote attributed to him (circa 135 A.D.) shows that he (and thus by inference the rest of Smyrna) was not unitarian,

Now may the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the eternal High-priest Himself, the [Son of] God Jesus Christ, build you up in faith and truth, and in all gentleness and in all avoidance of wrath and in forbearance and long suffering and in patient endurance and in purity; and may He grant unto you a lot and portion among His saints, and to us with you, and to all that are under heaven, who shall believe on our Lord and God Jesus Christ and on His Father (The Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians in APOSTOLIC FATHERS (as translated by J.B. LIGHTFOOT) 12:6,7).

It probably should be noted that Dr. Lightfoot left out “Son of” in his translation, which is in the Latin. It should also be pointed out that I am aware of another translation of this section by Roberts and Donaldson in Ante-Nicene Fathers, Vol, 1 which omitted the term “God” before Jesus Christ, but I verified that the term “deum” is in the Latin version of this epistle {the original Greek versions did not survive pass chapter 10}. Dr. Lightfoot’s translation “our Lord and God Jesus Christ” is a literal translation of the Latin “dominum nostrum et deum Iesum Christum”. The University of Notre Dame Latin Dictionary and Grammar Aid states “deus -i m. [a god , deity]”. The term “deum” is the masculine accusatory form of the word “deus”.  Since traditional unitarians do not call Jesus God, it appears clear that Polycarp clearly was not one of them. Furthermore, he did not ever call the Holy Spirit God.

Also, Ignatius, who was known by Polycarp (and praised in this same Polycarp Letter), wrote around 108-120 A.D.,

For our God, Jesus Christ, was conceived by Mary in accord with God’s plan: of the seed of David, it is true, but also of the Holy Spirit. He was born and baptized so that by His submission He might purify the water (Ignatius of Antioch, Letters to the Ephesians 18,2–note this is translated the same by at least three separate translations as done by Dr. Lightfoot, J.H. Srawley, and Roberts & Donaldson).

…God appeared in human form to bring newness of eternal life (Ignatius. Letter the Ephesians, 19,3. In Holmes: The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations. Baker Books, Grand Rapids (MI), 2004, p. 149).

Hence, Ignatius (who apparently lived in the times dominated by both the Ephesus and Smyrna eras of the Church), who received Polycarp’s praise, also recognized Jesus as God, and thus could not have been a traditional unitarian.

Ignatius also stated:

Ignatius, who is also Theophorus, unto her which hath been blessed in greatness through the plentitude of God the Father; which hath been foreordained before the ages to be for ever unto abiding and unchangeable glory, united and elect in a true passion, by the will of the Father and of Jesus Christ our God; even unto the church which is in Ephesus [of Asia], worthy of all felicitation: abundant greeting in Christ Jesus and in blameless joy (Ignatius’ Letter to the Ephesians, Verse 0. In Apostolic Fathers. Lightfoot & Harmer, 1891 translation).

He also stated something similar to the Smyrnaeans:

Ignatius, who is also Theophorus, to the church of God the Father and of Jesus Christ the Beloved, which hath been mercifully endowed with every grace, being filled with faith and love and lacking in no grace, most reverend and bearing holy treasures; to the church which is in Smyrna of Asia, in a blameless spirit and in the word of God abundant greeting. I give glory to Jesus Christ the God who bestowed such wisdom upon you” (Ignatius’ Letter to the Symrnaeans, Verses 0-1.1. In Apostolic Fathers. Lightfoot & Harmer, 1891 translation).

It is important to note that Ignatius referred to both the Father and the Son as God in both places (and I verified that it is in the original Greek), but he never called the Holy Spirit ‘God’.

A second century apologist named Athenagoras wrote the following:

And, the Son being in the Father and the Father in the Son, in oneness and power of spirit, the understanding and reason (nous kai logos) of the Father is the Son of God…The Holy Spirit…which operates in the prophets, we assert to be an effluence of God, flowing from Him, and returning back again like a beam of the sun…Who, then, would not be astonished to hear men who speak of God the Father, and of God the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Athenagoras. A Plea for the Christians, Chapter X. Translated by B.P. Pratten. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 2. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

Thus Athenagoras explained that the Father and the Son are God, have a oneness of power and spirit, and that the Holy Spirit is the effluence of God. He never called the Holy Spirit God. And he stated that both, the Father and the Son (the term in English refers to two), are both united and distinct–this is a binitarian view.

Near the end of the second century, Melito of Sardis (whom Catholics and others consider to be a saint) wrote

No eye can see Him, nor thought apprehend Him, nor language describe Him; and those who love Him speak of Him thus: `Father, and God of Truth” (Melito. A Discourse Which Was in the Presence of Antoninus Caesar).

Melito also wrote, “For the deeds done by Christ after His baptism, and especially His miracles, gave indication and assurance to the world of the Deity hidden in His flesh. For, being at once both God and perfect man likewise…He concealed the signs of His Deity, although He was the true God existing before all ages” (Melito. On the Nature of Christ. From Roberts and Donaldson).

This clearly shows that Melito considered Christ to be God (though with part of His deity concealed), as well as the Father. There is no indication in any of the surviving writings of Melito that he considered that the Holy Spirit was also God, hence he seemed to hold a binitarian view. Actually, like most binitarians, his writings suggest that the Holy Spirit was simply the power of God as he wrote:

The finger of the Lord-the Holy Spirit, by whose operation the tables of the law in Exodus are said to have been written (Melito. From the Oration on Our Lord’s Passion. Online version copyright © 2001 Peter Kirby. http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/melito.html 9/10/05).

Also near the end of the second century (Circa 180), Irenaeus (who is also considered to have been a saint by the Roman Catholics) wrote this in his famous paper against heresies:

…there is none other called God by the Scriptures except the Father of all, and the Son, and those who possess the adoption (Irenaeus. Adversus haereses, Book IV, Preface, Verse 4. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

Notice that Irenaeus states that only the Father, the Son, and those who possess the adoption (Christians) are God. This is a binitarian, not a trinitarian nor unitarian view.

Christianity Today (a Protestant publication) records this piece of Church history involving the Catholic Origen:

The great third-century theologian Origen, for example, pressed a bishop named Heraclides to define the relationship of Christ to God the Father. After much careful questioning, Heraclides admitted to believing in two Gods but clarified that “the power is one.” Origen reminded Heraclides that some Christians would “take offense at the statement that there are two Gods. We must express the doctrine carefully to show in what sense they are two, and in what sense the two are one God.” (Did You Know? Unusual facts about the Council of Nicea. Church History 2005. Christianity Today. http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/2005/001/4.2.html).

Hence even the Catholic and Protestant scholars must know that binitarianism was the earliest prevailing position among those who professed Christ.

Interestingly, Tertullian (often referred to as “the father of Latin theology”), around 213 A.D. wrote:

Well then, you reply, if He was God who spoke, and He was also God who created, at this rate, one God spoke and another created; (and thus) two Gods are declared (Against Praxeas 13:1).

Tertullian also wrote:

The simple…are constantly throwing out against us that we are preachers of two gods and three gods…

Now, from this one passage of the epistle of the inspired apostle, we have been already able to show that the Father and the Son are two separate Persons, not only by the mention of their separate names as Father and the Son, but also by the fact that He who delivered up the kingdom, and He to whom it is delivered up — and in like manner, He who subjected (all things), and He to whom they were subjected — must necessarily be two different Beings. But since they will have the Two to be but One, so that the Father shall be deemed to be the same as the Son…For the Father is the entire substance, but the Son is a derivation and portion of the whole, as He Himself acknowledges: “My Father is greater than I.” In the Psalm His inferiority is described as being “a little lower than the angels.” Thus the Father is distinct from the Son, being greater than the Son (Tertullian. Against Praxeas, Chapters 3,4-5,9. Translated by Peter Holmes. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 3. Edited by Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

Around the same time Hippolytus (who, according to The Catholic Encyclopedia “was the most important theologian and the most prolific religious writer of the Roman Church in the pre-Constantinian era”) wrote:

These things then, brethren, are declared by the Scriptures. And the blessed John, in the testimony of his Gospel, gives us an account of this economy (disposition) and acknowledges this Word as God, when he says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” If, then, the Word was with God, and was also God, what follows? Would one say that he speaks of two Gods? I shall not indeed speak of two Gods, but of one; of two Persons however, and of a third economy (disposition), viz., the grace of the Holy Ghost. For the Father indeed is One, but there are two Persons, because there is also the Son (Hippolytus. Against Noetus, Chapter 14. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 5. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1886. Online Edition Copyright © 2005 by K. Knight).

Thus from Ignatius, Polycarp, Melito, Irenaeus, Tertullian (although he himself did not hold a binitarian view), Origen and Hippolytus, we have strong indication that some sort of binitarian view was held during the time of Smyrna (the second, third, and early fourth centuries).

Furthermore, it perhaps should be mentioned that the sacra nomina (generally two-letter abbreviations, perhaps intended to identify the documents as “Christian”) found on early documents associated Christianity is also believed to support the position that those that professed Christ in the second century were binitarian.  Dr. Larry Hurtado observed:

The Christian nomina sacra…differ in form from any Jewish scribal devices…Most significantly, the four earliest Christian nomina sacra are the two key words for God (Theos and Kyrios) and key designations for Jesus (Iēosus, Christos, and Kyrios).  If therefore, as is usually believed, the nomina sacra practice represents an expression of piety and reverence, it is a striking departure from pre-Christian Jewish scribal practice to extend to these designations of Jesus the same scribal treatment given to key designations for God.  That is, the four earliest Christian nomina sacra collectively manifest one noteworthy expression of what I have called the “binitarian shape” of earliest Christian piety and devotion (Hurtado LW.  The Earliest Christian Artifacts.  William B. Eerdmans Publishing, Grand Rapids (MI), 2006, pp. 105-106).

How can Wade Cox claim it “is a complete fabrication to assert that the early Church was Binitarian”?  The “fabrication” is him denying the documented facts and making false assertions to the contrary.

All real scholars who are truthful with the facts admit it, including many trinitarian ones!

Perhaps I should mention that, Ronald Weinland, who I do not consider to be any type of scholar, like Wade Cox, also prefers to believe in unitarianism, even though he should know better as a former minister in UCG.

One trinitarian leaning scholar, Professor Hurtado, has  specifically acknowledged:

…the “binitarian” pattern of devotion in which both God (the “Father”) and Jesus are objects of such reverence goes back to the earliest observable stages of the movement that became Christianity…The central place given to Jesus…and…their concern to avoid ditheism by reverencing Jesus rather consistently with reference to “the Father”, combine to shape the proto-orthodox “binitarian” pattern of devotion. Jesus truly is reverenced as divine” (Ibid, pp. 605, 618).

Regarding the New Testament, another trinitarian scholar has admitted:

The binitarian formulas are found in Rom. 8:11, 2 Cor. 4:14, Gal. 1:1, Eph. 1:20, 1 Tim 1:2, 1 Pet. 1:21, and 2 John 1:13…No doctrine of the Trinity in the Nicene sense is present in the New Testament…There is no doctrine of the Trinity in the strict sense in the Apostolic Fathers…(Rusch W.G. The Trinitarian Controversy. Fortress Press, Phil., 1980, pp. 2-3).

A non-Church of God scholar, M. Barnes, explains the binitarian belief this way:

The word “binitarian” is typically used by scholars and theologians as a contrast to a trinitarian theology: a theology of “two” in God rather than a theology of “three”… it is accurate to offer the judgment that most commonly when someone speaks of a Christian “binitarian” theology the “two” in God are the Father and the Son…A substantial amount of recent scholarship has been devoted to exploring the implications of the fact that Jesus was ”worshipped” by those first Jewish Christians, since in Judaism “worship” was limited to the worship of God (Barnes M. Early Christian Binitarianism: the Father and the Holy Spirit. Early Christian Binitarianism – as read at NAPS 2001).

Much of the recent scholarship that M. Barnes refers to has been the result of the translations of the Nag Hammadi and other ancient manuscripts which were not available many decades ago.

Sadly, people such as Wade Cox seem to wish to ignore the ancient writings, as well as modern scholars, who admit to the fact that binitarianism was the belief of those who originally professed Christ.

And, it is still what those in the true Church should do today.
