North Korea has decided to make threats to show its disapproval of certain actions of the USA and South Korea:

North Korea on Saturday issued a fresh warning of an “all-out war”, urging the United States to stop military drills and what it described as “nuclear blackmail”.

In a thinly veiled threat to strike the United States, the North’s National Defence Commission (NDC), chaired by leader Kim Jong-Un, said the U.S. government must withdraw its policy of hostility against the North if it wants peace on both the Korean peninsula and the “U.S. mainland”.

“(The United States) must bear it in mind that reckless provocative acts would meet our retaliatory strikes and lead to an all-out war of jU.S.tice for a final showdown with the United States,” a spokesman of the NDC was quoted as saying in a statement carried by Pyongyang’s Korean Central News Agency.

“We emphasize again that the United States mU.S.t withdraw varioU.S. measures aimed to isolate and strangulate U.S.. Dependent upon this are… peace and security, not only on the Korean peninsula but the U.S. mainland as well.”

The comments come after a two-day joint naval drill between Japan, South Korea and the U.S., which included an American nuclear aircraft carrier, sparked a series of angry responses and threats from Pyongyang.  http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/world/2013/10/12/North-Korea-warns-of-all-out-war-.html

Many of the people in North Korea are suffering and hungry.  If North Korea would shift from being a militaristic nuclear power to more of a food and manufacturing producer, this should benefit them as well as ease tensions in the region.

The USA is vulnerable to terrorist attacks from North Korea, such as detonating a small nuclear bomb or “dirty bomb” (a conventional type of explosion with radioactive materials added to it), or an emp-bomb (electro-magnetic pulse bomb) attack.  But North Korea would not win an ‘all-out-war’ against the USA.

An emp attack by North Korea, however, could greatly affect the USA, or even South Korea or Japan.  Power transformers in the USA (and elsewhere) are at risk and this could cause major economic and other damage to the USA. Such emp weapons, however, have never been used large scale, so precisely what would happen is subject to debate. But the reality is that emp weapons, as well as solar flares which have similar potential, are threats to the USA, its defenses, and its economy.

Hopefully, for the USA and North Korea, the North Koreans will not do that.

According to the Bible, a type of confederation will happen with the ‘kings of the sunrise” (Revelation 16:12) will happen.  This means that there will be changes in North Korea.

Whether North Korea brings this change upon itself by striking out at others or it happens for economic or other reasons, the reality is that situation in North Korea will change.

As regular readers of this page know, the massive reunification that that David Pack, leader of the improperly named Restored Church of God (RCG) claimed should have happened on August 30, 2013 did not.  I repeatedly wrote that he would be wrong, and, of course, he was.

However, he has attempted to ‘spin’ what happened as well as to pick another date or so.

Last evening, RCG’s David Pack posted the following:

This will be my last announcement for some time. It brings additional aspects of the Haggai/Zechariah prophecy to completion…

I have been well aware for over 40 years in the ministry of Mr. Armstrong’s position on setting dates. But in the case of the Haggai prophecy, I and every minister at our Headquarters concluded that the prophecy came in a manner that was inseparable from timing—that timing was directly attached to it. Let me interject that most of the thinking RCG put out on Haggai and Zechariah this year, and not only a small part of it, was wrong. It is interesting that David Pack is trying to implicate people who felt pressured by him to agree and also blame them for his errors.

Also in that post, David Pack (I decided not to post all of it) basically blamed Herbert Armstrong for errors, essentially suggesting that there was no difference between 1972 and August 30, 2013. But years before 1972, Herbert Armstrong taught that it was not likely going to be the end then, whereas David Pack pushed his position until late August 2013.

Anyway, David Pack also wrote:

Originally we took the “sixth month” to be the sixth month of God’s sacred calendar, which is Elul. This was wrong. Upon closer examination, it became clear that the reference to the “sixth month” is simply to the sixth month and second year of King Darius’ reign from when it started…A series of clues point to Haggai 1:1 being in the SPRING of the year, NOT the fall.

Haggai 1:1 records the third overall date—the first day of the sixth month. This would be early March our time.

The fourth date is in Haggai 1:15—the 24th day of the sixth month. It describes the people coming to work in God’s House. Again, this would be about April 1 in our calendar.

The fifth date is in Haggai 2:1—the 21st day of the seventh month—and would be late in April. We originally thought this was the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, but it would be more like right after Passover.

The sixth date is in Haggai 2:10—the 24th day of the ninth month—and continues through Haggai 2. This would be the equivalent of late July…

We should now at least ask: Will God’s people keep the Passover and Days of Unleavened Bread together in 2014?—in 2015?—or later? The reader may draw his own conclusions…

The answer to the first and second question is, NO POSSIBLE WAY WILL ALL OF GOD’S PEOPLE BE UNIFIED IN 2014 OR 2015 AS DAVID PACK HAS INDICATED THAT MAY. I continue to conclude that David Pack is delusional and any who believe him are allowing themselves to be deceived in many ways.  As far as 2014 or 2015 Passover dates go, David Pack is somewhat reminding me of the Protestant John Hagee who has his own predictions related to those Passover dates that he ties in with ‘blood moons’ (see Blood Moons and Prophecy, there is a related YouTube video is also available: Blood Moons, Prophecy, 2014, and 2015.).

Back to his post, David Pack then at least admitted an error, but without real repentance:

None of this new understanding speaks to when the prophecy will be fulfilled. I will certainly never repeat such a mistake.

He then said that 5 of his 21 Feast of Tabernacles’ sites were up 19-29% in attendance, without giving total results or actual numbers. Sadly, this will help persuade many of the deluded to stay with them. That is a personal and spiritual mistake. And the reality is that he is pointing to other dates, so while he claims he will never be as insistent on future dates, he is pointing to other dates, and they will also be proven to be wrong.

David Pack  also had the following false statement:

A statement to all MINISTERS: God WILL reunite His people, and soon.

David Pack simply does not understand many aspects of biblical prophecy. The type of reunification that David Pack is purporting is not part of God’s plan for His Church in the end (cf. Revelation 2 & 3; Revelation 12:14-17).

Months ago, a reader told me that David Pack had made some outrageous claims in one or more of his sermons that he did not have in his weekly posts. Some notes from someone who listened to David Pack’s sermon were sent to me and details are in the post: RCG’s David Pack declares that ‘three shepherds’ will die on August 30, 2013. Is Bob Thiel one of them? Here are some of statements that a reader sent me that he said he heard David Pack make:

All Brethren United Soon Part 12

How could so many things happen in 24 hours?

Minute 26. Three men die- Elul 24, then everyone makes a decision that day.

Minute 29. Certain things about this prophesy is very complex, others are very simple.

Minute 30. No way everything could happen in one day.

Minute 32. Do you care most how the 3 Shephard’s die? In their sleep, by fire?

Do you care who they are?

If God tells us then I want to know otherwise it doesn’t matter.

You are going to find out how they die and who they are.

Minute 33. I know their names 100% sure. Don’t want the names out yet. Now I’m certain I know.

Do you care where it happens? I don’t know where it will happen.

I know how they die and who they are. I’m certain.

Minute 34. How about when they die? They die sooner then we thought.

Do they die together or separately. I know they die together.

Two culminating events. The death of these men is the first. The central point is God is going to bring his people back together/unify his people.

The ’24 hours’ was supposed to be August 30, 2013. None of that happened (cf. 2 Peter 2:1-3).

In RCG, and some other places, many confuse their own covetousness with faith. I have long believed that RCG has one of the biggest covetous issues of groups claiming to be COG (cf. 2 Peter 2:1-3). Those there really do need to anoint their eyes (Revelation 3:18) and see the truth.

David Pack seemed to believe that if he had a new headquarters’ building that this would be enough to get people to come to him and that this was God’s plan. But it was never God’s plan, but the imagination and vanity of David Pack and many of his followers. Can they see the real truth now or how many more false interpretations from David Pack will it take?

Notice also the following:

20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’ — 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him. (Deuteronomy 18:20-22)

Sadly, many are afraid of David Pack. Many do not understand how his bullying tactics affect them.

Why report about any of this?  Sadly, because as I have long written about him, David Pack is one who has helped fulfill the following:

1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. (2 Peter 2:1-3)

By improperly claiming to represent true COG Christianity, David Pack is causing the way of truth to be blasphemed.  However, just because he is wrong and again will be proven to be wrong, this does not change the fact that the Bible is true and that includes the biblical prophecies.

The problem is that the self-appointed ‘apostle’ David Pack is a false apostle.  But because of him and others like him, people will discount properly understood and taught prophecy by God’s real ministers.

Notice also the following:

12 But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.  (2 Corinthians 11:12-15)

We in the Continuing Church of God rely on the Bible and “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed” (2 Peter 1:19, KJV).  Those still following David Pack do not.  They also do not see the ‘handwriting on the wall,’ despite how obvious it should be.

Buboes of Bubonic Plague

The bubonic plague is becoming a problem in Madagascar:

October 11, 2013 JOHANNESBURG — The already troubled African island of Madagascar faces a new and terrifying threat:  bubonic plague. In recent years, the Indian Ocean nation has become the world’s top site for the storied disease, with hundreds of cases and scored of plague deaths last year. Aid officials are warning that things could get worse unless more is done to prevent and fight the spread of the often-deadly disease.

Madagascar is the world’s hotspot for this flea-borne disease. It first gained infamy in the 14th century for killing some 25 million people in Europe. That epidemic earned the disease its ominous nickname, Black Death.

Last year, Madagascar saw more cases of bubonic plague than anywhere in the world, with 256 cases and 60 deaths. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says that some 500 cases have been recorded on the island every year since 2009.

The ICRC this week announced a campaign with Malagasy authorities to eliminate flea-ridden disease-carrying rodents in a prison in the capital. Prisons in the nation are often overcrowded and dirty, making them ideal breeding grounds for disease.

Bubonic plague is rare in the modern era. But ICRC spokesman Jean-Yves Clémenzo says it persists in some pockets of the world, like Madagascar. He spoke to VOA from Geneva. “It’s not only Madagascar. You have still cases of plague in around 15 countries in the world, mainly the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and some South American countries,” he stated. “It’s mainly due to poor health conditions, poor infrastructure.”

Bubonic plague sounds terrifying because it is. Victims who are bitten by plague-infected fleas — carried on rats — often develop painful lymph-node swelling, flu-like symptoms and gangrene on their extremities. Without life-saving antibiotics, about two-thirds of those infected will die, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Medical officials say plague is not spread from person to person. But no vaccine is available.

Clémenzo said that it is vital to not hesitate if you are bitten by a flea and begin to experience symptoms. “So if you fear that you have plague, that you have bites on the body, what is important is to react very quickly, as the disease can spread and people can die in 24 hours. The plague historically devastated Europe and has caused a lot of problems.  Now, it looks like Madagascar is facing a potentially devastating outbreak.

Pestilences, like the plague, are warned about for the end times. Jesus taught:

7…And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:6-8)

8…And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows.  (Mark 13:8)

We seem to be in the time Jesus called “the beginning of sorrows.”  Speaking of sorrows and troubles, up to 60,000 head of cattle have died from storms in South Dakota this month (http://www.cattlenetwork.com/cattle-news/Up-to-60000-cattle-lost-in-SD-storm-aid-slow-to-materialize–226955821.html).  This certainly is troubling.

Getting back to the plague, interestingly, today the Russian press had the following information about how doctors used to dress to treat it in the Middle Ages:

The largest pandemic (Black Death) of 1348 – 1351 was brought to Europe by Genoese sailors from the East…It was believed that the mask with a beak that made doctors look like ancient Egyptian deities repelled the disease. The beak’s function was to protect the doctor from foul smell of the sick. The tip of the beak was filled with strong-smelling herbs that made breathing in the constant stench of plague easier.  Plague Doctors constantly chewed garlic for prevention, and the beak protected others from the garlic odor. In addition, doctors put incense on a special sponge and placed it in the nose and ears. To prevent suffocation from this bouquet of smells, the beak had two small vents. The mask also had a glass insert for eyes protection. A long waxed coat and leather or oiled clothes made ​​of thick fabric were required to avoid contact with infected patients. Often clothes were soaked with a mixture of camphor, oil and wax. So why mention bird beak masks?

Well, they were mainly used by “Catholic’ doctors in the Middle Ages, despite coming from ancient Egyptian deities.  Also, I have noticed that these bird beak masks are frequently associated with Mardi Gras, which supposedly is supposed to be tied in with Catholic holidays.

Christianity and the adoption of pagan religious customs should not mix.  But many who profess Christianity mix them any way.

That being said, we should all pray for those in Madagascar and consider how serious outbreaks of the plague can be.

Damage from Syrian Conflict

The situation in Syria has been difficult for those living there.  Notice also the following:

A prominent human rights group has accused Syrian rebels of committing crimes against humanity during a recent offensive on an area held by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

Human Rights Watch claims armed Syrian opposition forces killed at least 190 civilians and took over 200 hostages, mostly women and children, during the August attack on Latakia province.

The New York-based group’s report says at least 67 of the victims were executed or unlawfully killed during the attacks on 10 Alawite villages loyal to Assad. In some cases, the report said, entire families were gunned down.

The investigation found that 20 armed groups participated in the operation. It said five Islamist groups were the most involved, including Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. It is unknown whether or not the Western-backed Free Syrian Army participated.

Human Rights Watch’s acting Middle East director, Joe Stork, said the abuses were not just the actions of rogue fighters, but a “coordinated, planned attack on the civilian population.”

Rights groups have also documented repeated cases of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity by President Assad’s forces during the nearly three-year-long conflict, which has killed over 100,000 people.

In one of the deadliest such cases, hundreds were killed in August during a chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held suburb of Damascus. In a coordinated attack, numerous rebel groups fought off a small garrison of government troops and swept into the villages, killing 190 people, according to a Human Rights Watch report to be released on Friday. At least 67 of the dead appeared to have been shot or stabbed while unarmed or fleeing, including 48 women and 11 children, the report said. More than 200 civilians are still being held hostage.

“This is the first time that we have documented opposition forces actually systematically targeting civilians,” said Lama Fakih, the group’s deputy director in Beirut, Lebanon, who last month visited five of the villages, which the government had recaptured by Aug. 19. She also reviewed medical records and interviewed 19 witnesses as well as doctors, military officials and opposition members for the 113-page report.

As I mentioned before, partially because the USA ended up not bombing Syria, some of the USA’s so-called allies in the Syrian opposition have decided to support Al-Qaeda (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57604557/syria-rebel-factions-including-al-qaeda-linked-nusra-front-reject-authority-of-u.s.-backed-opposition-snc/). The situation in Syria still is unstable and will change.

Eventually Syria, and others in the Middle East and North Africa, will plot to eliminate the USA based upon the 83rd Psalm. Because Syria is expected to be part of the conspirators in Psalm 83, as well as a supporter of the future King of the South (Daniel 11:40-43) and aligned with Egypt per Ezekiel 30:1-9, I have been certain for quite some time that the situation in Syria would change. Either Syria’s President Bashar Assad will change, stop being president, die, or be exiled.

Between civil war, chemical weapons, murders, deaths, and war crimes, it is terrible what the people in Syria have had to endure.  They, along with all of us, need to pray “Thy kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10, KJV).

I have reported about some possible interest in the Eurasian Union by Georgia in the past (Eurasian Union growing: Even Georgian Prime Minister looking).  Georgia has a presidential election on October 27th and one or more candidates seems to have some interest in the Eurasian Union.

Because of past Russian incursions and interests associated with Georgia (e.g. Russia May Annex South Georgia and Sell Oil to the East), many in Georgia are concerned about becoming part of the Eurasian Union that Russia is leading.  Some in Georgia believe that they need to turn towards the West and the European Union.  Others have doubts that the European Union would want Georgia for a while and suspect that economically, the Eurasian Union is a much better interim solution.

A powerful union is rising up in Europe.  For a while, the world will cooperate with it, but it will fall (Revelation 18).  Part of the destruction of the Babylonian European power will come from forces associated with Russia (Jeremiah 50:41-43).  And Georgia, eventually, will likely align with Russia.

The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, John Boehner, says his Republican caucus has agreed to a short term extension of the federal debt ceiling, to avert a possible default next week. The political impasse has kept large parts of the U.S. government shut down for 10 days…

“Democrats are prepared to make sure that the government pays its bills,” said Hoyer. “But good policy, good economics and building confidence for the American people would be extending it for a substantial period of time so the markets will have the confidence of where we are going to be next week, next month and next year.”

WHITE HOUSE — President Barack Obama and Republican and Democratic congressional leaders are meeting in an attempt to resolve the U.S. government shutdown and debt limit stalemate.  Obama cautiously welcomed a Republican proposal for a temporary increase in the U.S. debt limit.

Before the White House talks began, House Speaker John Boehner and other Republican leaders announced their proposal to extend the debt limit for six weeks until November 22.

They assert this would open the way for “good faith negotiations” on broader budget issues…Press secretary Jay Carney said Obama is happy that “cooler heads” seem to be prevailing and that there seems to be a recognition that government default is not an option.

WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders are proposing a six-week increase in the nation’s $16.7 trillion debt ceiling as a way of avoiding a first-ever U.S. default on debts. The White House has indicated that it might be something President Obama could accept, depending on the details of the bill.

If there is enough support within the party, the House is expected to vote on the bill Friday. Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, proposed the plan to the full Republican conference Thursday morning. The plan would extend the debt ceiling to Nov. 22.

The decision to seek approval for a short-term increase is in part because Obama and congressional Democrats have declined to engage with Republicans in budget talks. Yellen, not much more than 5 feet tall, is a towering intellect who commands respect from those who understand the intricacies of monetary policy and can explain them to those of more modest intellectual gifts, a skill that will prove useful when she faces confirmation in the Senate.

She will also become the world’s most powerful woman.

Yellen is about to become the most powerful woman in US history.

How can we make such a claim? After all, Nancy Pelosi became the speaker of the US house in 2007, she was arguably the most-powerful woman ever elected in the US. And Hillary Clinton, Condoleeza Rice and Madeleine Albright ran the State Department. (The secretary of state is the highest-ranking member of the presidential cabinet.) Moreover, the US has had four women on the Supreme Court bench…

But this silver-haired, Brooklyn-born, Berkeley economist is about to top them all—assuming that her nomination is confirmed by the Senate, which is pretty much assured. The reason why has to do with the unique position of the Federal Reserve as an independent part of the federal government as well as the power of the chairman within that institution…In fact, in terms of institutional power, the chairmanship of the Fed might most resemble the chief justice of the Supreme Court.

As far as outgoing Chairman Bernanke goes, the mainstream media has mainly been singing his praises in the articles I saw about him today.  I will add that this is partially because relatively few journalists rely on or sufficiently believe the Bible.  If they did, they would realize that the debt accumulated via Ben Bernanke’s quantitative easing programs will help lead to the fulfillment of the following prophecies:

13 “Behold, therefore, I beat My fists at the dishonest profit which you have made, and at the bloodshed which has been in your midst. 14 Can your heart endure, or can your hands remain strong, in the days when I shall deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and will do it. 15 I will scatter you among the nations, disperse you throughout the countries, and remove your filthiness completely from you. (Ezekiel 22:13-15)

12…Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.” (Isaiah 3:12)

16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err, And those who are led by them are destroyed (Isaiah 9:16).

Quantitative easing is form of ‘money creation’ and is also sometimes called an “asset repurchasing” program. Yet, this is mainly a sham operation that debases the value of the U.S. dollar (mainly the government prints up money electronically and the “asset” purchased is a U.S. treasury note, not a real asset like, let’s say, an oil well; yes there are also some mortgages purchased which have ties to real assets, but there are problems there as well). Calling if counterfeiting is not too far off of a description of it. If Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke would have paid more attention to scripture, he would not have proposed it.

Quantitative easing will help destroy the USA dollar.  And as far as I have been able to tell, Janet Yellen shares a lot of Chairman Bernanke’s views.  Janet Yellen has served as the Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve for the past three years.

Partially because of what Chairman Bernanke and his colleagues like Janet Yellen have done (other political leaders and others have also assisted in the process and nations also have their own agendas), the USA has engaged in policies that are causing other nations to try to come up with a replacement currency or basket of currencies to replace the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency.  The following, from today’s news, is just one:

China launched a currency swap deal with the euro zone on Thursday, in the country’s latest push to transform the yuan into a major world currency…

“From the perspective of the euro system, the swap arrangement is intended to serve as a backstop liquidity facility and to reassure euro area banks of the continuous provision of Chinese yuan,” said the European Central Bank in a news release.

Benefits of FX swap agreements include improving liquidity for currencies outside the domestic market, helping ensure the stability of financial markets. Plus, there has been a strong growth in China-European trade and investment flows, with Europe as a whole accounting for 14 percent of China trade last year.

So, the above deal involves the Chinese renminbi yuan and the European Union’s euro for trade without needing to use USA dollars.  This deal will hurt the value of the USA dollar in the long wrong and is harmful to the economy of the USA.  Most people in the USA will not notice the above deal nor consider its economic or prophetic ramifications.

Janet Yellen will likely make moves that will also help lead to the elimination of the US dollar as the world’s primary reserve currency as well as to its ultimate worthlessness.

Here is some background information about her:

Yellen was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Anna (née Blumenthal) and Julius Yellen, a physician. She graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn.[5] She graduated summa cum laude from Brown University with a degree in economics in 1967, and received her Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in 1971. Yellen is Jewish and is married to George Akerlof, a Nobel prize-winning economist and professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. Her son, Robert Akerlof, is an assistant professor at the University of Warwick…

Yellen is considered by many on Wall Street to be a “dove” (more concerned with unemployment than with inflation) and as such to be less likely to advocate Federal Reserve interest rate hikes…(Janet Yellen.  Wikipedia, viewed 10/10/13)

The above suggests that she will be at least as willing as Ben Bernanke to inflating the money supply through currency debasing.  This is not something advocated in the Bible (Proverbs 25:4, Isaiah 1:22, 25).  But this seems to be something that the Obama Administration wants (as have various previous administrations).

As far as being the most powerful woman in US history or currently in the world (according to the secular news sources cited in the beginning of this post), this would suggest that Janet Yellen is helping fulfill the following prophecy:

As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths…(Isaiah 3:12)

I am not saying that if US President Obama nominated a man instead that he would necessarily do a better job.  But Janet Yellen’s apparent views on inflation are more dangerous than most in the USA seem to realize.  Her policies will help lead to hyperinflation.

WASHINGTON/BRUNEI — China has offered to improve ties with Southeast Asia, using a regional summit to compete for influence with the United States, whose President Barack Obama was notable for his absence.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with leaders of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Brunei on Wednesday, pledging to boost Chinese investment in the region.

Mr. Li also struck a conciliatory tone on long-running maritime disputes with ASEAN members. He said Beijing believes that “a peaceful South China Sea is a blessing for all” and that rival claims to the resource-rich waters should should be resolved through talks.

President Barack Obama had planned to meet with ASEAN leaders in Brunei but canceled his attendance to deal with domestic budgetary disputes that led to the partial shutdown of the U.S. federal government…

Hal Hill, a professor of Southeast Asian economies at the Australian National University, said Beijing partly did use a “divide and rule” strategy at last year’s summit. He said many Southeast Asian countries face a tough choice when dealing with China.

“The states adjoining China are very small, very poor countries next to a colossus, so they have to balance the importance of their relations with China, which is of course now the dominant economic and commercial power in the region, along with their attachment to ASEAN,” he said…

ASEAN members also were hoping to advance talks on a proposed free trade area spanning the entire Southeast Asian region, which is home to more than 600 million people. The countries of Asia face several dilemmas.  Most do not fully trust China, yet they are near China geographically while they also realize that the USA is not.  And that the USA can get preoccupied with other matters.

The USA has been hurting its credibility throughout 2013 in terms of how it has handled its numerous fiscal ‘crises’ and its so-called ‘debt-ceiling’ (which it keeps raising, despite complaints by some about doing so).

ASEAN itself is a geo-political and economic organisation of ten countries located in Southeast Asia.  It was formed on 8 August 1967 originally by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.  Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.  China is a major trading partner for most of the members of ASEAN.

Since China is a lender and not really a borrower, many are realizing that China’s influence will tend to increase as that of the USA will decrease.  Ultimately, many in Asia will cooperate militarily according to biblical prophecy (cf. Revelation 16:12).

Israel apparently would like the USA to supporting Egypt’s military-backed government more than it may have decided to:

JERUSALEM — Officials and experts in Israel responded on Wednesday with a mixture of disappointment and alarm to the news that the United States planned to reduce its military aid to Egypt in response to this summer’s brutal crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood and the continuing violence it has spawned.

Israel views the aid as part and parcel of its 1979 peace treaty with Egypt, and essential to the maintenance of stability in the region.

Israel has been involved in the Obama administration’s discussions on the cuts. Israeli officials refused to comment publicly on the matter on Wednesday, in part because there had been no official announcement yet from Washington.

But one Israeli official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the delicate diplomacy involved, warned that the implications of punitive cuts in Egypt’s aid could go far beyond the issue of Israeli-Egyptian relations. Although Egypt’s military government has driven the Muslim Brotherhood underground, the situation there is far from settled.

The biblical reality is that situation in the Middle East and North Africa must change. It is tense and battle lines are being drawn. Now, I am not saying that what will replace the interim government in Egypt will be better for the West than the current one. But what I am saying is that neither the interim government of Egypt will continue as they have been.

Now, earlier, Saudi Arabia basically said it would give Egypt more money than the US aid, so that should seem to make up for the loss.  However, as tourism continues to suffer in Egypt, its overall economy is not doing well and it probably feels it needs even more aid than Saudi Arabia, the USA, and others have given it.

The Muslim Brotherhood itself is a Sunni Muslim group. Most Arabs, including those in Egypt, are Sunni Muslims (countries such as Iran and Iraq are mainly Shi’ite Muslims; Syria has a Shi’ite Muslim leader, its President Assad, though the majority of Syrians are Sunnis).

The Muslim Brotherhood apparently wants as its top priority a pan-national Islamic caliphate ruled by an Islamic leader known as an Imam or Caliph. Many Muslims long for the rising up of a leader called the 12th Imam, often referred to as the Imam Mahdi. It will not end up with Spain if I understand certain aspects of Bible prophecy correctly, but the confederation of the final King of the South may go from around Western Sahara and/or Mauritania to Oman (with possible involvement and/or coordination with Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and/or Indonesia).

Notice a translation of what some, who have been part of it, write that the Muslim Brotherhood wants:

…the Islamic Ummah [nation] can regain its power and be liberated and assume its rightful position which was intended by Allah, as the most exalted nation among men, as the leaders of humanity…

To bring enough Arab nations together, I have felt that some type of “strongman” needed to rise up.  One who Arabs would tend to respect–who might use or not use the title Imam Mahdi.

Despite being made illegal by an Egyptian court, the goal of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is a confederation of states in North Africa and the Middle East, will come to pass (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:1-9).

USA funding, or lack thereof, will likely affect the balance of power in Egypt.
