The Fourth of July and the USA

The US Bill of Rights

Today is the fourth of July. It is considered to be ‘independence day’ for the USA as its Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

Typically, on this day, many in the USA will have barbeques, watch parades, and/or view fireworks.

Yet, those who live in the USA may wish to re-read its Declaration of Independence as its current government not only seems to have a disdain for more of the law of God, it also is probably more guilty than the old British rule for committing many acts that caused the colonists to revolt in the first place.

A few years ago, I read my family much of the Declaration and commented upon how the current USA federal, state, and local governments had committed most of the same actions that the USA’s revolutionary leaders objected to from the British king against our family (directly and/or indirectly) within that year or so.

In order to try to further protect the rights of the citizens of its new nation, the Bill of Rights came into effect as Constitutional Amendments on December 15, 1791.

People such as Edward Snowden, despite whatever flaws he may have, have pointed out some of how the USA violated portions of the Bill of Rights, such as the 4th-6th amendment rights. So, he has been in hiding for that. Here is what those amendments were supposed to protect (some of which have been mishandled related to him personally by the US government):

  • Fourth Amendment – Protection from unreasonable search and seizure.
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
  • Fifth Amendment – due process, double jeopardy, self-incrimination, eminent domain.
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
  • Sixth Amendment – Trial by jury and rights of the accused; Confrontation Clause, speedy trial, public trial, right to counsel
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

The ramifications of the Snowden leaks are that those in the USA have realized that their government tends to ignore or pretend to reason around its Constitution, while the international community is outraged by the amount of spying that the USA has engaged in. The Obama Administration claimed it would be the most transparent administration in recent USA history, and instead it has repeatedly been caught for espionage and trying to cover various matters up.  The international community has called the USA hypocritical on all of this.  Many in Europe and elsewhere are getting upset with the USA for what it has been doing.

Even today, it was announced that the USA has been caught infiltrating Germany:

BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s spokesman said Friday that she had been informed of the arrest of a German man who, according to media reports, is an intelligence service employee accused of spying for the United States.

Federal prosecutors said a 31-year-old German man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of spying for foreign intelligence services. They did not identify the suspect or the intelligence services.

“The Chancellor was also informed of this case yesterday,” Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters in Berlin.

He declined to comment on reports by Der Spiegel magazine and the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung that the man worked for Germany’s foreign intelligence service, known by its German acronym BND.  http://www.chron.com/news/crime/article/Report-German-intel-worker-suspected-of-US-spying-5599848.php

Germany was already incensed by revelations that came from Edward Snowden, and today’s matter will incense them more.  The Bible tells of a time that a power based in central Europe will come against “an hypocritical nation” which it will end up destroying (Isaiah 10:5-11, KJV).

As far as the early foundations of the USA go, if it was written today and adopted, I suspect that the USA Supreme Court would probably rule the Declaration unconstitutional as it starts out with the following statements:

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

And the Declaration ends with the following statement:

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

Also, the Bill of Rights has tended to be viewed as intending to provide citizens minimalist protection by the US Supreme Court, which is in violation of its intent. July 4, 2014 does not truly find a court system or a country that is particularly keen on keeping the government out of most peoples’ lives.

Let’s look at some of the grievances that the colonists had against King George and his government, from the Declaration:

The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

Let’s stop here for a moment. The current US President, Barack Obama, refused to assent to the the Defense of Marriage Act (cf. Obama Announces He Wants to Repeal Defense of Marriage Act and Increase Debt), and the US Supreme Court, nullified that law (which was passed by Congress and signed by then President Bill Clinton) and basically also a proposition against homosexual marriage in California which had been approved by the voters there. Back in 1973, the US Supreme Court decided that State prohibition against abortions would not stand and that unborn babies could be killed. Did the government of King George do worse?

Here is more from the Declaration:

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

The US Courts have told US States that they do not have the right to enforce various immigration laws and now plan (if certain immigration bills pass) to tell the States that they will have to recognize various foreigners in violation of existing laws and historical practices.

Here is more from the Declaration:

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

There are enough scandals from Washington, including those involving the current Attorney General Holder and various others that suggest that various ones in the USA government have done this, including ones associated with the Internal Revenue Service.

The Declaration also states:

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

The Bush Administration got Congress to approve the so-called ‘Patriot Act’ and establish the Homeland Security Administration and other offices. The Obama Administration has added other offices as well and when its healthcare law goes more into effect, it will also create a lot more New Offices, etc. The Internal Revenue scandal also shows that various officers were harassing people for years.

The Declaration also states:

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

Many US presidents have signed agreements with the United Nations and others that, in theory, are similar to what the colonists revolted against.

The Declaration also states:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

The above happens all the time, but because it is done through administrative fees and/or with some legislative intent, this is considered acceptable to many. Yet, the amount of taxes raised, in terms of percentage of income, is MANY times higher than when the colonists revolted.

The Declaration also states:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:

Essentially the so-called Patriot Act and other measures supposedly designed to fight terrorism and/or drug-trafficking have resulted in the US government doing this probably much more than the representatives of King George ever would have considered, let alone done.

The Declaration also states:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

The US federal government, including through various of its courts, has effectively done the above many times.

The Declaration also states:

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

This is more subtle. The USA government treats its citizens as potential terrorists and criminals. It engages in massive espionage on its citizens, etc. Additionally, as the Snowden matter brought out, pretty much all communications that the US government can monitor by its citizens is subject to being monitored.

The Declaration also states:

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

Because it tends to consider itself the world’s policeman, the government of the USA has been engaged in almost non-stop warfare, in one foreign country or other, since the early 1950s.

In 2014, the US Supreme Court issued a couple of rulings indicating that it feels that the Obama Administration exceeded its constitutional authority (such as with the ‘Hobby Lobby’ case related to paying for abortive forms of birth control).  But those rulings have not reversed the trend of the US government growing in power and taking away rights that the founders of the USA wanted its citizens to keep.

And while simply restoring practices consistent with the Declaration of Independence will NOT stop the USA from going down the path that will lead it to destruction (nor am I advocating violent revolt), ignoring God as well as documents like the Bible and the ten commandments will insure the destruction of the USA.

National repentance is the only way to prevent it, and that does not look likely. The advocacy of homosexuality and abortion, and increased indebtedness and acceptance of various forms of pornography that we have seen in 2013 suggests that national repentance is about the furthest thing on the minds of the national political leaders and most of the mainstream media in the USA.

Personal repentance, however, is still possible. If you are an American, your personal future can still be much brighter than that of your country.

Caliph of Islamic State wants to conquer Rome

The leader of the self-proclaimed caliphate in Iraq, called the Islamic State, has vowed to take Rome:

The leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has reportedly set his sights on Rome.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who has been deemed by his fighters to be the first Caliph since the Ottoman empire, aims to extend an ‘Islamic State’ into Europe…

“Rush O Muslims to your state. It is your state. Syria is not for Syrians and Iraq is not for Iraqis. The land is for the Muslims, all Muslims. … This is my advice to you. If you hold to it you will conquer Rome and own the world, if Allah wills,” al-Baghdadi said in an audio recording released online… Wednesday…  http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/jul/2/islamic-state-vows-conquest-rome-soldiers-islamic-/#ixzz36Q5ZI5FF 

Various Islamic writings suggest that an Islamic empire will conquer the world and specifically Rome.  Notice:

“Are they waiting for anything except the Hour to come to them suddenly? But its Signs have already come!” (Al-Quran, 47:18)

As one of these signs, Imam Ahmad reports in his Musnad that Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-’As (ra) mentioned: “Whilst we were around the Prophet (saw) writing he was asked, ‘Which of the two cities will be opened first, Constantinople or Rome?’ He (the Prophet Muhammad) answered, ‘The city of Heraclius will be opened first!’”

The Great Ottoman, Sultan Muhammad Fatih (rh) fulfilled the first part of this prophecy by conquering Constantinople. Thus, remains the second part. Having been forced out of Andalusia, and more recently, dispersed across the Balkan states, the city of Gaius Julius Caesar (Rome) remains. Apparently this is what Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi wants to make happen.

There are other Islamic writings that talk about a peace deal with the Roman Catholics, that the Catholics will break and then destroy an Islamic empire.  However, unless Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi makes some changes, he will not be the leader that the majority of Sunni Arabs will follow and hence not become the King of the South of biblical prophecy.  It is also not clear to me that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has the proper Islamic lineage to rule as prophesied caliph (he would need to be a descendant of Muhammad through his daughter Fatima; see also The Prophesied ‘Islamic’ Confederation)–although that is not strictly needed from a biblical perspective, it may be that enough Sunnis would not follow someone without that.

The Bible itself tells that a European leader and an Arabic leader (both referred to as kings below) will make a lying deal together:

27 Both these kings’ hearts shall be bent on evil, and they shall speak lies at the same table; but it shall not prosper, for the end will still be at the appointed time. (Daniel 11:27)

Information showing that this involves a European leader is included in the articles and.  Information showing that this is involves an Arabic leader is in the article .

There will be a deal that a European leader will confirm for seven years that involves the Middle East, that he will break:

27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate (Daniel 9:27)

And the Bible shows that the European leader will takeover the Arabic leader and his confederation (watch also the video War is Coming Between Europeans and Arabs).

Islamic prophecies also speak of something that resembles this deal and that the Europeans/Romans will break it:

Rasaullah [Muhammed] said: “There will be four peace agreements between you and the Romans [Christians].  The fourth agreement will be mediated through a person who will be the progeny of Hadrat Haroon [Honorable Aaron — Moses’ brother] and will be upheld for seven years (Richardson J. Antichrist: Islam’s Awaited Messiah. Pleasant Word, 2006, p. 48)

5 General anarchy and bloodshed, that no Arab household will be spared from it
6 Then a life of peace as a result of a peace agreement between you and the Banil Asfaar
(Romans) which they will break and attack you with a force consisting of eighty flags and under each flag will be an army of twelve thousand men.” (Hadith: Sahih Bukhari). Catholic prophecies tell of a time of war that will affect Rome as well as representatives of Islam:

Blessed Anna Maria Taigi (died 1837): “described to me the great ordeal ahead. Rome would be battered by revolutions…Millions of men would die by the sword in war and civil strife, other millions would perish in unforeseen death. Then entire nations would return to the unity of the Church, and many Turks, Pagans and Jews would be converted and their fervour cover with confusion the original Christians. In one word she told me that our Lord was intending to cleanse the world and His Church…” (Bessieres A. Wife, Mother and Mystic (Blessed Anna Maria Taigi). Nihil Obstat: Carlos Davis, S.T.L. Imprimatur: E Morrough Bernard, Westmonasteri, die Februari, 1952. Reprint TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1982, p. 166).

Old Saxon Prophecy. “The seven-headed city, now more admirable than Jerusalem, shall be a place more desolate than Jerusalem. The Dog shall enter Germany but shall afterwards forsake his master and choose for himself a new man, whereby Scripture shall be fulfilled. This Dog shall signify the Turk which shall forsake his Mohammed and choose unto him the name Christian…But after all these things the end of the world shall approach, and there shall be heavey and pitiful days.”

Comment: The seven-headed city is probably Rome…(the comment is from Dupont personally, Dupont, Yves. Catholic Prophecy: The Coming Chastisement. TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1973, pp.23-24)

Sister Ludmilla of Prague (cir. 1250): Hardly three generations will pass after the world war, when one will also endeavor to prevent the Pope from exercising his sacred office, which will be a sign that the fall of Rome and the end of the world is near (Culleton, Reign of Antichrist, p. 131).

Anna-Katarina Emmerick (19th century): I saw again a new and odd-looking Church which they were trying to build. There was nothing holy about it…(Dupont, p. 116).

Yves Dupont {Catholic writer interpreting A. Emmerick}: They wanted to make a new Church, a Church of human manufacture, but God had other designs…The Holy Father shall have to leave Rome, and he shall die a cruel death. An anti-pope shall be set up in Rome (Dupont, p. 116).

Yves Dupont (20th century): Civil wars rage in Western Europe…the Pope leaves Rome and dies in exile; an anti-pope is installed in Rome…The Mohammedans invade Europe and commit innumerable atrocities. In the West, however, Christians rally around an unexpected leader… (Dupont, p. 1).

The Bible tells of conflict between a European power who will have ties with the City of Seven Hills (Rome) and a power primarily composed of Arabic, Nubian, and Turkish peoples.  War will come (watch also the video War is Coming Between Europeans and Arabs).

Rome and other cities in Europe are bound to be affected.  I have long expected civil war, civil unrest, and war with the Arabs coming to Europe.

As far as the destruction of Rome, both biblical and Roman Catholic prophecies indicate that this will come after the coming war between the Europeans and the Arabs.

Notice something about this in my book, The Last Pope:

[T]here seem to be several similarities between the prophecy of Bishop Malachy and the last pope and statements in the chapter 17 of the Book of Revelation (also known as the Apocalypse).

First, let us look at the entire prediction of the final pope by Bishop Malachy as reported in The Catholic Encyclopedia again:

“In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations, after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End.”

Now let us notice that the Bible warns about something happening in the end time that is consistent with parts of the Malachy prophecy.

1 And there came one of the seven angels, who had the seven vials, and spoke with me, saying: Come, I will shew thee the condemnation of the great harlot, who sitteth upon many waters, 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication; and they who inhabit the earth, have been made drunk with the whine of her whoredom.

3 And he took me away in spirit into the desert. And I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.  4 And the woman was clothed round about with purple and scarlet, and gilt with gold, and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of the abomination and filthiness of her fornication.  5 And on her forehead a name was written: A mystery; Babylon the great, the mother of the fornications, and the abominations of the earth.  6 And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And I wondered, when I had seen her, with great admiration.

7 And the angel said to me: Why dost thou wonder? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast which carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.  8 The beast, which thou sawest, was, and is not, and shall come up out of the bottomless pit, and go into destruction: and the inhabitants on the earth (whose names are not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world) shall wonder, seeing the beast that was, and is not.

9 And here is the understanding that hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, upon which the woman sitteth, and they are seven kings:  10 Five are fallen, one is, and the other is not yet come: and when he is come, he must remain a short time.  11 And the beast which was, and is not: the same also is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into destruction.

12 And the ten horns which thou sawest, are ten kings, who have not yet received a kingdom, but shall receive power as kings one hour after the beast.  13 These have one design: and their strength and power they shall deliver to the beast.  14 These shall fight with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them, because he is Lord of lords, and King of kings, and they that are with him are called, and elect, and faithful.

15 And he said to me: The waters which thou sawest, where the harlot sitteth, are peoples, and nations, and tongues.  16 And the ten horns which thou sawest in the beast: these shall hate the harlot, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and shall burn her with fire.  17 For God hath given into their hearts to do that which pleaseth him: that they give their kingdom to the beast, till the words of God be fulfilled.

18 And the woman which thou sawest, is the great city, which hath kingdom over the kings of the earth.  (Revelation 17:1-18, DRB)

In both Malachy’s list and the Book of Revelation we see:

  1. Reference to the city of seven hills/mountains.
  2. The destruction of the city of seven hills/ mountains.
  3. The end of a power in Rome.
  4. Persecution.
  5. Troubles/tribulations on the earth.
  6. A type of judgment.
  7. Events for the end time.

The persecution that the Bible tells of is of the truly faithful (Revelation 17:6 and seemingly others per 17:16-17).  And the judgment that the Bible shows happens, will also come from God (Revelation 17:1,14; cf. 6:10; 18:10).

Rome will be destroyed according to biblical and Catholic sources.  Though an Islamic force may damage it first, the final destruction of Rome will not come until later according to the :more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed” (2 Peter 1:19, KJV), the Bible.

Israel bombed Gaza today and Gaza apparently bombed Israel yesterday:

Israeli jets struck targets in Gaza Thursday while militants continued sending rockets into southern Israel, amid mounting tension over the killing of an Arab teenager in east Jerusalem.

The Israeli military said its jets targeted 15 “Hamas terror sites” in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian officials say 10 civilians were wounded…

Israeli officials say the strikes were in response to over 20 rockets fired at Israel since Wednesday. Most of the rockets were intercepted, but at least two struck houses in the border town of Sderot. No injuries were reported…

Meanwhile, Israeli authorities continue investigating the death of 17-year-old Mohammed Abu Khudair, who was kidnapped and whose body was found in a Jerusalem forest on Wednesday.

Palestinian officials blame Israeli settlers for the alleged attack, saying it is revenge for the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens who were buried this week. Israel blames that attack on Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip. It denies the charge…

UN condemns violence flare-up

The U.N. human rights chief condemned both Palestinians and Israelis for the  flare up of violence across the Israel-Gaza border.

“From a human rights point of view, I utterly condemn these rocket attacks and more especially I condemn Israel’s excessive acts of retaliation,” U.N. Violence continues in many places throughout the world. We need to pray, “Thy Kingdom Come!”

The situation in the Middle East will change. A multi-national Arab/Turkish confederation will form and will turn against Israel (Psalm 83).

A Palestinian jihadi group calling itself “Supporters of the Islamic State in Jerusalem” claimed responsibility for the abduction and killing of the three Israeli students in Hebron, whose bodies were found on Monday evening in a shallow grave.

The statement was posted on an open access jihadist website supportive of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis), the Sunni militant group which is waging war in Iraq and has declared a caliphate straddling Iraq and Syria. This is a group claiming ties to the recently declared Sunni ‘Islamic State’ in Iraq which has claimed responsibility (and they are also believed to have ties with Gaza).  Although some type of caliphate/confederation will form in North Africa and the Middle East, the new “Islamic State” would need to change its approach if it expects enough of the Muslims to support it to fulfill various biblical and Islamic prophecies (see also The Prophesied ‘Islamic’ Confederation).

As far as the Middle East goes, as I have written for some time, it will likely take some type of regional war for the apparent peace deal of Daniel 9:27 to take place (see also The ‘Peace Deal’ of Daniel 9:27). The current actions between Israel and Hamas will likely be a factor. At minimum, the actions are enraging much of the Arab world.

At some point in time, the Bible shows that the nations of North Africa and the Middle East will form a confederation, involving Egypt (Ezekiel 30:1-9), under the leadership of one the Bible refers to as the final King of the South (Daniel 11:40-43). The dislike that many of the Arab states have for each other is sometimes less than the hatred that they (or their people) tend to have for the nation of Israel.

Thus, conflicts like this (as well as what is going on now in Iraq and Syria) that lead to destruction (cf. Isaiah 17:1) may be the motivating force for both a “peace deal” as well directly or indirectly for the formation of the North African/Middle East confederation that the Bible shows will happen in the end time (cf. Daniel 11:40-43).

India and the Apostle Thomas

July 3rd is held to be the ‘day’ for Thomas the apostle. He is believed to have been stabbed with a spear c.72 in while in prayer on a hill in Mylapur, India.

Thomas is mentioned various times in the Bible. In Matthew 10:3, Mark 3:18, and Luke 6:15 his name is listed next to the Apostle Matthew.

He seemed to have a certain bravery, was willing to ask questions, and apparently was a twin or perhaps resembled someone else well:

12 Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.” 13 However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.

14 Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.”

16 Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.” (John 11:12-16)

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” (John 14:1-5)

1 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. (John 21:1-4)

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. (Acts 1:12-14)

He is probably best known for the following:

24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:24-29)

Yet, if the legends about him later are true, he traveled farther than any other apostle. Some believe that he reached Malaysia and perhaps even the edges of China itself. But he seems best known for apparently reaching India.

In the early third century, Hippolytus wrote about Bartholomew and Thomas:

Bartholomew, again, preached to the Indians, to whom he also gave the Gospel according to Matthew, and was crucified with his head downward, and was buried in Allanum, a town of the great Armenia…

And Thomas preached to the Parthians, Medes, Persians, Hyrcanians, Bactrians, and Margians, and was thrust through in the four members of his body with a pine spears at Calamene, the city of India, and was buried there (Hippolytus. On The Twelve Apostles).

This may be the earliest reference to any form of Christianity coming to India.

One legend, that was written down in the late 1800s, but has been questioned, concerns Thomas:

The Rabban Song, which has been passed down orally by generations of Indian Christians, recounts Thomas’ career in India in some detail. It states that the apostle arrived in India in late A.D. 49, stayed briefly then went to China. This generally agrees with Indian traditions. Such a trip would have occurred shortly after Thomas’s arrival in South India. Farquhar and Garitte believe that it is unlikely that Thomas actually went to China proper–certainly not Peking–within the short space of perhaps a year alotted by the Indian narratives. They believe that he did evangelize in what are now Burma and Malaysia for a short time before returning to South India. According to the Rabban Song, between A.D. 52 and 59 Thomas founded seven churches and baptized one king…In A.D. 69, Thomas settled permanently in Mylapore…According to most Indian traditions, Thomas died of stab wounds on July 3, A.D. 72. The Braham priests of Mylapore feared that Christianity would eclipse Hinduism (Ruffin C.B. The Twelve: The Lives of the Apostles After Calvary. Our Sunday Visitor, Huntington (IN), 1997, pp. 132-134).

“St. Thomas Christians” are claimed to be an ancient body of professing Christians on the east and west coasts of India. They claim spiritual descent from the Apostle Thomas and also claim various versions of the Ramban Pattu (Rabban Song). While none that I am aware of still keep the same faith that the Apostle Thomas kept, as they eventually accepted Roman dominance, it is probable that the Apostle Thomas was there and that there have been Christians in India since the times of the apostles (it should also be noted that there is, however, a congregation in the South-east coastal region of India in the area of Bhimavaram that does practice true Christianity–it is just that they do not refer to themselves as “St. Thomas Christians”.

The Catholic Encyclopedia mentions this about the “St. Thomas Christians”:

St. Thomas Christians An ancient body of Christians on the east and west coasts of India, claiming spiritual descent from the Apostle St. Thomas…

Theophilus (surnamed the Indian) — an Arian, sent by Emperor Constantius (about 354) on a mission to Arabia Felix and Abyssinia — is one of the earliest, if not the first, who draws our attention to them…The people referred to were the Christians known as a body who had their liturgy in the Syriac language and inhabited the west coast of India, i.e. Malabar…

Gregory of Tours (Glor. Mart.), before 590, reports that Theodore, a pilgrim who had gone to Gaul, told him that in that part of India where the corpus (bones) of Thomas the Apostle had first rested (Mylapur on the east or the Coromandel Coast of India) there stood a monastery and a church of striking dimensions and elaboratedly adorned, adding: “After a long interval of time these remains had been removed thence to the city of Edessa.” The location of the first tomb of the Apostle in India is proof both of his martyrdom and of its Apostolate in India. The evidence of Theodore is that of an eyewitness who had visited both tombs — the first in India, while the second was at Edessa. The primitive Christians, therefore, found on both coasts, east and west, witness to and locate the tomb at Mylapur, “St. Thomas”, a little to the south of Madras; no other place in India lays any claim to possess the tomb, nor does any other country. On these facts is based their claim to be known as St. Thomas Christians…

There is one incident of the long period of isolation of the St. Thomas Christians from the rest of the Christian world which they are never tired of relating, and it is one of considerable importance to them for the civil status it conferred and secured to them in the country. This is the narrative of the arrival of a Syrian merchant on their shores, a certain Mar Thoma Cana — the Portuguese have named him Cananeo and styled him an Armenian, which he was not. He arrived by ship on the coast and entered the port of Cranganore. The King of Malabar, Cheruman Perumal, was in the vicinity, and receiving information of his arrival sent for him and admitted him to his presence…

It was only after the conversion of Sulaka in 1552 that the Chaldeans in part returned to the unity of faith. The truth is that the Malabar Church remained from A.D. 496 up till then in heresy….

During the centuries that these Christians were isolated from the rest of Christendom, their sole intercourse was limited to Mesopotamia…But from the close of the thirteenth century Western travellers, chiefly missionaries sent out by the popes, sent to the West occasional news of their existence (Medlycott, A.E. Whether or not Thomas Cana was completely Syrian or part Armenian, the religion that his followers embraced was not one that allowed them to accept the authority of the Roman Church. Thomas Cana is believed to have died around 346 A.D. But eventually (after 1552) the bulk of the “St. Thomas Christians” accepted Roman authority–hence would no longer have some of the characteristics of the early Christian church.

The reality, as real scholars will admit, the professing Christian world was NOT dominated by nor led by the Church of Rome in the first couple of centuries after Jesus’ resurrection. Church of God doctrines were found in many places including India, Asia Minor, various parts of Europe, and the British Isles.

Japan’s understanding of its Constitution just changed and some are concerned what they may mean:

Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister, has started a process to reinterpret a critical part of the country’s constitution. The result of this reinterpretation is that it will allow the Japanese military to help friendly countries under attack, a development that has caused anxiety in East Asian countries that were once at the receiving end of Japan’s armed aggression. Not all reactions have been negative. The reinterpretation has been welcomed by Japan’s most important ally, US…

(CNN) — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s timing was impeccable: July 1 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces (SDF)…

Abe’s Cabinet has approved a defense policy that takes a liberal view of the constitution, allowing for Japanese involvement in the defense of its allies. Previously, the SDF could only act if Japan itself was directly threatened.

Abe, speaking at a press conference Tuesday. said that the “basic idea” of the constitution “remains unchanged,” and that any involvement in military action must be taken in a “minimal way.”

He said that Japan’s security policy has evolved throughout the postwar period, and that the SDF activities in peacekeeping missions are appreciated around the world. With the reinterpretation, “Japan will contribute even more than in the past.”

With regional concerns, such as North Korea’s missile program and China’s increasing belligerence in regional territorial claims occupying the Prime Minister’s mind, he will see a more relaxed interpretation of the document as critical to maintaining Japan’s influence, both within the East Asian sphere but also internationally.

Japan took a historic step away from its post-war pacifism on Tuesday by ending a ban that has kept the military from fighting abroad since 1945, a victory for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe but a move that has riled China and worries many Japanese voters.

The change, the most dramatic policy shift since Japan set up its post-war armed forces 60 years ago, will widen Japan’s military options by ending the ban on exercising “collective self-defense”, or aiding a friendly country under attack…

Some voters worry about entanglement in foreign wars and others are angry at what they see as a gutting of Article 9 by ignoring formal amendment procedures. The charter has never been revised since it was adopted after Japan’s 1945 defeat.

On Sunday, a man set himself on fire near a busy Tokyo intersection – a rare form of protest in Japan – after speaking out against Abe’s re-interpretation of Article 9…

Precisely how the change might work in practice remains unclear, although it is likely to ease the path to joint military exercises with countries other than the United States. New Komeito, the junior partner in Abe’s governing coalition, says the scope of revision is limited.

Japan wants to act like a superpower.  And Japan’s leaders have now allowed it to be more aggressive militarily.  The USA, which is the nation that originally had the Japanese Constitution written more restrictively has encouraged this change for some time.  Notice:

On paper, Japan is a pacifist nation. It ranks 6th on the Global Peace Index, a list tabulated by peace activists at Vision of Humanity. Japan’s constitution makes illegal a traditional standing army. But a recently published defense white paper shows the extent to which the country has one of the most well-equipped “invisible” armies in the world…

Japan will produce more of its weapons.  It has less trust in the USA than it once had and now is going to more openly arm itself.  North Korea and China will not like that.  Japan took over Korea, much of China, and many of the islands in that part of the Pacific during WWII.  There was a reason that the USA had earlier forced that Constitutional restriction upon Japan.

But now with the USA getting more and more in debt, the Japanese are concluding that they need to be more proactive militarily.  The time will come when they will use this military in the future (cf. Daniel 11:44-45; Revelation 16:12).

A government-contracted security force threatened to arrest doctors and nurses if they divulged any information about the contagion threat at a refugee camp housing illegal alien children at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, sources say.

In spite of the threat, several former camp workers broke their confidentiality agreements and shared exclusive details with me about the dangerous conditions at the camp. They said taxpayers deserve to know about the contagious diseases and the risks the children pose to Americans. I have agreed to not to disclose their identities because they fear retaliation and prosecution…

Both the counselor and the nurse said their superiors tried to cover up the extent of the illnesses.

“When they found out the kids had scabies, the charge nurse was adamant – ‘Don’t mention that. Don’t say scabies,’” the nurse recounted. “But everybody knew they had scabies. Some of the workers were very concerned about touching things and picking things up. They asked if they should be concerned, but they were told don’t worry about it.”

The nurse said the lice issue was epidemic – but everything was kept “hush-hush.”

“Everyone was paranoid,” she said. “The children had more rights than the workers.”

I am calling this “Infection-gate” as it seems to be the latest federal government-related cover-up in the USA (the federal government has declared that immigration is a federal issue, and apparently it does not want certain problems associated with certain immigrants publicized).

Emerging Pathogens & Public Health

We live in a global world where most people outside of North America are likely to die from an infectious disease – something the average US citizen doesn’t worry about, and hasn’t had to since the mid 20th century.  TB, dengue, HIV, influenza, malaria, food-borne illnesses, and environmental (mosquitoes, worms, other insect vectors) threats pose daily risks to most people worldwide, especially the poor, which suggests immigrants from South America, parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia can import their illnesses as they immigrate or travel within our borders.

By May of 2014 the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS, or MERS CoV) arrived in the United States. For many of you, this is a new virus, and another threat emanating out of the Middle East, in case terrorism and energy insecurity weren’t enough! The World Health Organization (WHO) alerted the international community about MERS after identifying the new pathogen from two men who became ill in Jordan in 2012. Early in the MERS lifespan, cases were sporadic. A few cases were in clusters around health care workers and close contacts. Lately the numbers are growing seemingly exponentially…

The US faces an onslaught of threats and challenges, not the least are several which will impact the health of our nation…June 2014 through another safety breach, the CDC allowed ~ 84 workers to be exposed to anthrax. Should we take some solace that the CDC is telling us the public is not at risk? Many do not realize the seriousness of these infections and apparently it is not always politically-correct’  to tell the truth about them.

The movie Contagion (poster shown at the beginning this post) warned about threats that most act like are minor and attempted to show how serious a threat infections can be.

Humankind is at risk. And modern travel, which was prophesied (Daniel 12:4) and other practices are placing humanity at even greater risk, as are genetically-modified foods. Pestilences are a real risk.

Jesus warned:

11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. (Luke 21:11)

Of course, pestilences are prophesied in the Bible. Jesus warned that “pestilences” would be part of the “beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:7-8). In the Book of Revelation, death and disease pestilences are predicted with the ride of the fourth horseman:

7 When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” 8 So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth. (Revelation 6:7-8)

The ride of the pale horseman of death will result in deaths from war, famine, and pestilence.

Tougher times are coming. And for some parts of the world these tougher time may be here now. People who can prepare, should. Both spiritually and physically.

The “contagion” of pestilence will bring much more than fear, the fourth horseman will bring massive amounts of actual deaths.

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:37)

“The Federal Reserve believes that it is managing a reversible process… [but] it is mistaken.”

More than anyone I know, Jim Rickards has thought about what the death of the dollar might look like. Jim literally wrote the book on it…

Jim explains (with more thought and detail than anyone before him) exactly how the U.S. dollar could ultimately collapse, and what that collapse will look like.

It all starts innocently enough, with what I’ve been calling the Bernanke Asset Bubble…

The Bernanke Asset Bubble began when the Federal Reserve cut interest rates to zero and started printing trillions of dollars to prop up the U.S. economy and prevent prices from falling (deflation).

“The fact that central banks are pursuing inflation [by printing money], and cannot achieve it, is a gauge of the persistence of the underlying deflation,” Rickards says.

The Fed “believes that deflation can turn into inflation,” Rickards explains in his book. But it’s a delicate balance – and this is where the trouble can start: “Money printing in the cause of defeating deflation may result in a loss of confidence in the fiat currency system.”

Once the confidence is lost, Rickards explains, “there is no way to reconstitute it; an entirely new system must rise in its place… Very likely, a new system will be needed, with a new foundation that can engender confidence.”

What path will the demise of the dollar take?

Rickards says “the dollar’s demise will take one of three paths”…

1.   World money
2.   A gold standard
3.   Social disorder

Yes, social disorder and the Great Tribulation will come.

As far as debt goes, the Bible teaches that debt will lead to destruction of a major debtor in the time of the end:

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man… 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you. Because of men’s blood And the violence of the land and the city, And of all who dwell in it. (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8).

The largest debtor nation of all-time in human history is the USA.

As far as world money goes, many nations are working towards a world currency and the end of the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency.  The USA dollar ultimately will be destroyed.

Newsletter writer Porter Stansberry reported earlier this year that he felt that July 1, 2014 was the beginning of the end of the USA dollar.  Here is part of his message:

On this date, U.S. House of Representatives Bill “H.R. 2847” goes into effect. It will usher in the true collapse of the U.S. dollar, and will make millions of Americans poorer, overnight.

While FATCA is not good for the economy of the USA, it of itself, is not enough to usher in the collapse of the USA dollar. FATCA (along with debt as well as fallout from the Edward Snowden leaks) may be helping set up a system that will allow the coming European Beast power to fulfill the following:

16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. (Revelation 13:16-17)

FATCA is a major step towards being able to control buying and selling. Porter Stansberry did not touch on that. Yet, he sees real problems in the fiscal situation in the USA.

The admitted US federal debt (not counting the money created through the quantitative easing programs) is so large that if interest rates rise to the place that they were in the USA in the early 1980s, the USA will have difficulty even paying the interest on the debt it has been accumulating. This will tend to cause interest rates to further rise and contribute to hyperinflation.

The Bible teaches the following:

13 “Behold, therefore, I beat My fists at the dishonest profit which you have made, and at the bloodshed which has been in your midst. 14 Can your heart endure, or can your hands remain strong, in the days when I shall deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and will do it. 15 I will scatter you among the nations, disperse you throughout the countries, and remove your filthiness completely from you. 16 You shall defile yourself in the sight of the nations; then you shall know that I am the Lord. (Ezekiel 22:13-16)

43 The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. 45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you…47 “Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you. 52 They shall besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you at all your gates throughout all your land which the LORD your God has given you (Deuteronomy 28:42-45,47-52)

It is the the United States and its Anglo-allies that have loaded pledges of debt in these end times that they really do not expect to pay back. In that respect they have recently plundered many nations. And while much is owed to nations such as China, Japan, and the Arab World, the Europeans have trillions of dollars invested in the USA–money they may be disappointed to have devalued. Enough so that they may divide the land among themselves and other creditors (cf. Daniel 11:39; Habakkuk 2:6-8).

Many will dismiss this and conclude that since the USA has been able to increase its debts that this will be able to go on forever, despite what the Bible says. Those who doubt the Bible will be proven wrong.

The main Spanish language website for the  Continuing Church of God is CDLIDD.ES La Continuación de la Iglesia de Dios.

La Continuación de la Iglesia de Dios (that is the translated title of CCOG) produces a lot of materials in the Spanish language.

Approximately 414 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it second only to Mandarin Chinese in terms of its number of native speakers worldwide.  There are more than 500 million Spanish speakers as a first or second language, and 20 million students of Spanish as a foreign language.Spanish is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and it is used as an official language by the European Union and Mercosur.

This is a door (Revelation 3:7-9; ) that the Continuing Church of God continues to go through. And we are pleased to offer as much material in the Spanish language as we do.  (We also produce materials in Mandarin Chinese, Tagalog, and Kishawili, and have information in some other languages also available).

Since CCOG has no externally-paid full-time staff and only a small budget, how can it be as successful as it has been?

Many critics scoff, but it is by God’s power that the work of proclaiming the gospel (Matthew 24:14) will be completed:

5 “Look among the nations and watch —
Be utterly astounded!
For I will work a work in your days
Which you would not believe, though it were told you. (Habakkuk 1:5)

6 So he answered and said to me:

“This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel:
‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’
Says the Lord of hosts.
7 ‘Who are you, O great mountain?
Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!
And he shall bring forth the capstone
With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!”‘”

8 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

9 “The hands of Zerubbabel
Have laid the foundation of this temple;
His hands shall also finish it.
Then you will know
That the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you.
10 For who has despised the day of small things? (Zechariah 4:6-10)

It will be those who are part of the Philadelphia remnant of the Church of God that will do this. And specifically, those currently supporting, as well as those who will later support, the Continuing Church of God.

‘Caliph’ calls for Muslims to move to his ‘Islamic State’

The leader of the proclaimed caliphate in Iraq has called for other Muslims to come to his claimed Islamic State:

The leader of jihadist militant group Isis has called on Muslims to travel to Iraq and Syria to help build an Islamic state, in an audio message.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi called on Muslims to immigrate to the “Islamic State”, saying it was a duty.

He made a “special call” for judges, doctors, engineers and people with military and administrative expertise.

Isis says it is forming an Islamic state, or caliphate, on the territories it controls in Iraq and Syria.

In an earlier audio recording this week, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) proclaimed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as caliph and “leader for Muslims everywhere”…

The group says its Islamic state will extend from Aleppo in northern Syria to Diyala province in eastern Iraq.

Setting up a state governed under strict Islamic law has long been a goal of many jihadists…

“Rush O Muslims to your state. Yes, it is your state. Rush, because Syria is not for the Syrians, and Iraq is not for the Iraqis,” al-Baghdadi said in a new audio message on Tuesday.

“O Muslims everywhere, whoever is capable of performing hijrah (emigration) to the Islamic State, then let him do so, because hijrah to the land of Islam is obligatory,” he added.

He also called on jihadist fighters to escalate fighting during the holy month of Ramadan, which began on Sunday.

“There is no deed in this virtuous month or in any other month better than jihad in the path of Allah, so take advantage of this opportunity and walk the path of you righteous predecessors,” he said in the 19-minute audio message.

Little is known about the Isis chief, nicknamed “the invisible sheikh”, who unlike al-Qaeda leaders such as Osama Bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, does not appear in video messages.  http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-28116846

Praise be to Allah, the Mighty a nd Strong. And may peace and blessing s be upon the one sent with the sword as a mercy to all creation. As for what follows: Allah (the Exalted) said: {Allah has promised t hose who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that – then those are the defiantly disobedient} [An-N ū r: 55]. Succession, establishment, and safety – a promise fr om Allah reserved for the Muslims, but with a condition. {They worship me [Allah] and do not associate anything with me} [An-N ū r: 55]. Having faith in Allah, keeping far from the gateways to shirk ( polytheism) and its various shades, along with submitting to Allah’s command in everything bi g and small, and giving Him the level of obedience that makes your lusts, inclinations, and desires to be in compliance with what the Prophet (peace be upon him) came with – only after this condition is met will the promise be fulfilled. For by fulfilling this condition comes the ability to build, reform, remove oppression, spread justice, and bring about safety and tranquility. Only by meeting this condition, will there be the succession, which Allah informed the angels about. Without this condition being met, authority become s nothing more than kingship, dominance and rule, accompanied with destruction, corruption, oppression, subjugation, fear, and the decadence of the human being and his descent to the level of animals. That is the reality of succession, which Allah created us for. It is not simply kingship, subjugation, dominance, and rule. Rather, succession is to utilize all that for the purpose of compelling the people to do what the Sharia (Allah’s law) requires of them concerning their interests in the hereafter and worldly life, which can only be achieved by carrying out the command of Allah, establishing His religion, and referring to His law for judgment. This succession, along with the aforementioned reality, is the purpose for which Allah sent His messengers and revealed His scriptures, and for which the swords of jihad were unsheathed…

Here the flag of the Islamic State, the flag of tawh ī d (monotheism), rises and flutters. Its shade covers land from Aleppo to Diyala. Beneath it, the walls of the taw ā gh ī t (rulers claiming the rights of Allah) have been demolished, their flags have fallen, and their borde rs have been destroyed. Th eir soldiers are either killed, imprisoned, or defeated. The Muslims are honored. The kuff ā r (infidels) are disgraced. Ahlus- Sunnah (the Sunnis) are masters and are esteemed. The people of bid’ah (heresy) are humiliated. The hud ū d (Sharia penalties) are implemented – the hud ū d of Allah – all of them. The frontlines are defended. Crosses and graves are demolished. …

It is a dream that lives in the depths of every Muslim believer. It is a hope that flutters in the heart of every muj ā hid muwahhid (monotheist). It is the khil ā fah (caliphate). It is the khil ā fah – the abandoned obligation of the era. …

Know that your leaders will not find any arguments to keep you away from the jam ā ’ah (the body of Muslims united behind a Muslim leader), the khil ā fah, and this great good, except for two false and weak excuses. ..

So let those leaders be ruined. And let that “ummah” they want to unite be ruined – an “ummah” of secularists, democrats, and nationalists… an “ummah” of murji’ah (a sect that excludes deeds from faith), ikhw ā n (the “Muslim Brotherhood” party), and sur ū riyyah (a sect influenced by the ikhw ā n claiming to be Salaf ī ). {Satan promises them and arouses desire in them.

But Satan does not promise them except delusion} [An- Nis ā ’: 120].

Basically this document says that part of the purpose of being a Muslim is to participate in jihad in order to establish an Islamic state and hence eliminate corruption.  Yet, perhaps it should be mentioned that the last ‘caliphate’ (which ended officially in 1924) was known for some of its corruption.  It also states that the Sunnis are now in charge as they supposed were intended to be.  It also denounces other groups with similar goals, like the Muslim Brotherhood, so it does not seem like this ‘caliphate’ in Iraq will be the final one unless it can learn to get along better with other Sunni groups.

As I mentioned before, this is not the first time this century that a caliphate has been declared to start. When the Ennahda party won in Tunisia in 2011, its leader declared the start of the the sixth caliphate (see Tunisia’s Expected Prime Minister Claims to be part of the Sixth Caliphate). But that really did not happen. Also, when the Muslim Brotherhood won in elections in Egypt and gained its presidency in 2012, many thought this was a start of the sixth caliphate, but that government was overthrown last Summer.  But with those two, no one really declared themselves as the expected caliph.  The group in Iraq is different, but in some ways, not too different.

Officially, the Islamic state, or khilafa, only disappeared less than a century ago when Mustafa Kamal Ataturk started his modernization program in Turkey after centuries of stagnation and corruption brought about by the Ottoman’s khilafa. So what golden age Muslims are talking about?

When Muslims think of an ideal Islamic state, they have something else in mind. They think of Islam as was implemented by what they like to call the four Rightly Guided Caliphs, Abu Bakr, Omar, Uthman and Ali who ruled after Mohammed. The four Caliphs were all close friends of Mohammed, who testified for them to have guaranteed places in paradise. Sunni Muslims do not fault those Caliphs and believe all of them truly followed the footsteps of Mohammed and consider their time, which only lasted thirty-one years, as the golden era of Islam.

The only problem is: Muslims do not read their history very well! For a start, with the exception of Abu Bakr, who died of natural causes, all the other three Caliphs were murdered in the most cruel and inhuman manner. Just imagine, if a country’s leaders are murdered in two thirds of the time!

Now, let us have a closer look at those thirty-one years of what Muslims describe as the glorious history of Islam. My main reference is Ibn Saad’s Al-Tabakat Alkubra, but other history books generally agree on the described events. It is also worth noting that the article only presents the Sunni point of view….

The group in Iraq, like some of the groups it denounces, wants a multinational Islamic empire, a caliphate led by someone with an Islamic title.

Nearly three and one-half years ago, I wrote:

Whether he is called the Imam Mahdi or Caliph (or both), a Muslim leader is going to get power.

While I am not convinced that Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim Ali al-Badri al-Samarrai (Arabic: ابراهيم عواد ابراهيم علي البدري السامرائي‎), commonly known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (أبو بكر البغدادي), is that leader, he may well be setting the stage for that leader to rise up.

We will see if he and/or his ‘caliphate’ survives and ultimately expands as he is urging now.

That being said, some type of caliphate/confederation of Arabic/Nubian/Turkish peoples will form according to the Bible (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:1-8).

The goal of an Islamic state or caliphate is found in both Shi’ite and Sunni Muslim literature. The group in Iraq is Sunni as is the group called the Muslim Brotherhood, which it denounces.

The situation in Iraq will change.

Ultimately, a confederation of Arabs, Nubians, and Turks will form for a time and cause damage (cf. Psalm 83:4-8; Daniel 11:40).  Yet, it will not last nor turn out well for most of the participants (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:1-8). What is happening in Iraq will not end well for Iraq and many others.
