The decline of US power?
July 10, 2015
Standing on the Washington Mall at the turn of the new millennium, it was impossible not to be struck by America’s power and global pre-eminence. …
Over the past 15 years, America’s fortunes have changed with dizzying speed.
First came the tremors: the dot-com bust and a disputed presidential election in 2000. Then came the massive convulsions: the destruction of the Twin Towers in 2001 and the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.
Long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have exacted an enormous blood price – the lives of 6,852 American military personnel – not to mention immense financial expense, estimated to be as high as $6 trillion (£3.9tn).
The detention centre at Guantanamo Bay has undermined American ideals, just as the NSA and Wikileaks spying scandals have undercut American diplomacy. …
Barack Obama, who campaigned in 2008 on a platform of extricating America from its unpopular and exhausting wars, has drawn criticism for disengaging too much. …
America’s global standing has been diminished.
Lost fear factor
Polls regularly show that Americans recognise that their country’s international standing has waned.
Among the young, this trendline has fallen sharply. Only 15% of 18-29-year-olds believe that America is the “greatest country in the world”, according to Pew, down from 27% in 2011.
Tellingly, however, there has been no great public outcry. …
No longer is there much appetite for America playing its long-standing role of global policeman, even in the face of the rise of the group calling itself Islamic State.
Obama, while continuing to trumpet “American exceptionalism”, regularly prefaces remarks on foreign affairs by acknowledging the limits of US power, again with little public outcry. …
The upshot is that the United States is no longer so keen to exert leadership in an increasingly messy world.
Yet one of the reasons why the world has become so disorderly is because America is no longer so active in imposing order. …
In recent months, two close allies, Britain and Australia, have defied the Obama administration by joining the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
By signing up to the AIIB, they are effectively endorsing Beijing’s effort to establish financial rivals to the Bretton Woods institutions, the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), which are dominated by America.
Ambiguous language
By seeking improved commercial and diplomatic relations with China, Britain and Australia are also hedging.
They suspect that America will not be the dominant Pacific military power indefinitely, nor the world’s foremost economic powerhouse. …
Like Israel, Saudi Arabia has been enraged by the prospective nuclear deal with the Iranians.
Riyadh also knows that America is no longer so dependent on its oil, the cornerstone of the relationship since the end of World War Two. …
Unexpected stats
More surprising has been its slippage in Africa, Obama’s ancestral home, and Asia, the focus of his much vaunted pivot.
In Asia, America’s median approval rating in 2014, as measured by Gallup, was 39%, a 6% drop since 2011.
In Africa, the median approval went down to 59%, the lowest since polling began, despite Obama hosting the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in Washington in August, last year.
It even dropped in Kenya, his father’s birthplace. …
Though America is contending with the rise of the rest – China, India, Brazil, Germany and Russia – it has not yet been overtaken by emergent rivals. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-33440287
Last night, for the first time in a while, I caught several minutes of Lou Dobbs Tonight. Lou Dobbs went into detail about the declines in the troop strength of the various branches of the US military. He also mentioned that the US Army plans to have less troops in two years than it had prior to the USA getting into World War II. He made a lot of comments about the USA being in decline and indicated that he did not hear enough from the current batch of presidential candidates to admit and deal with it.
Getting back to the BBC, the article also said that enemies of the USA like Syria and Iran no longer fear that the USA will use its military. This is consistent with the following prophecy:
19 I will break the pride of your power; I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. (Leviticus 26:19)
But, I have long felt that the above referred to more than military power, but to the USA’s love of its dollar. The BBC article did not directly go into the rise of USA debt, but that is a factor that will lead to its destruction:
6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him,
And a taunting riddle against him, and say,
‘Woe to him who increases
What is not his — how long?
And to him who loads himself with many pledges’?
7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly?
Will they not awaken who oppress you?
And you will become their booty.
8 Because you have plundered many nations,
All the remnant of the people shall plunder you,
Because of men’s blood
And the violence of the land and the city,
And of all who dwell in it. (Habakkuk 2:6-8)
The BBC article, as I cited, indicated that traditional USA allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia have been enraged by current USA policies related to Iran. A part of the article not cited by me above hinted that the USA essentially has betrayed Egypt–which it has done at least twice in the past several years.
The BBC comments about Kenya are interesting and correct. The Kenyans are more religious than many realize and they have not cared for several of the immoral policies promoted by Barack Obama. A book I wrote, titled Barack Obama, Prophecy, and the Destruction of the United States-Second Edition for Second Obama Term, has been popular with those in Kenya. The Continuing Church of God has more members in Kenya than any other nation on earth.
The fact that close allies such as Britain and Australia are taking other steps should let Americans realize that the USA is in decline and much of the rest of the world knows it. That being said, Britain and Australia will remain allies of the USA until probably sometime after the start of the Great Tribulation (see also hen Will the Great Tribulation Begin?), which could also be called World War III (see also rld War III: Steps in Progress).
The comment from the BBC that the various Gentile nations (China, India, Brazil, Germany and Russia) are rising is also something to comment on. The Bible tells of a Eurasian confederation in the time of the end that would seem to have to include China, India, and Russia (see also The Eurasian Union, the Kings of the East, and Bible Prophecy). The Bible also tells of a time when a German-dominated Europe will arise and it will destroy the USA and some of its Anglo-Saxon allies (Isaiah 10:5-11; see also Germany in Biblical and Catholic Prophecy). I have speculated that I believe there is a reasonable chance that Australia will end up under Chinese control.
Anyway, to answer the BBC question, yes the USA is in decline. More nations around the world are realizing this. Many are taking carnal steps to try to minimize the potential damage–though this will not really help nations like the UK and Australia much.
The real answer for the nations is the return of Jesus and the establishment of the kingdom of God. But you do not have to personally only wait for that, you can take steps to support it now (see also Real Conversion).
