Pope Francis removes Cardinal Mueller related to sex abuse matters

Cardinal George Pell is facing charges

Pope Francis is apparently in a type of clean-up mode as he just announced that he fired Cardinal Gerhard Mueller:

Pope removes German cardinal as sex abuse crisis catches up

July 1, 2017

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis sacked the head of the Vatican office that handles sex abuse cases Saturday, just days after he released another top Vatican cardinal to return home to stand trial for alleged sexual assault. The developments underscored how the Catholic Church’s sex abuse crisis has caught up with Francis, threatening to tarnish his legacy over a series of questionable appointments, decisions and oversights in his four-year papacy.Perhaps sensing a need to change course, Francis declined to renew the mandate of German Cardinal Gerhard Mueller as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican office that processes and evaluates all cases of priests accused of raping or molesting minors.

Francis named Mueller’s deputy, Monsignor Luis Ladaria Ferrer, a Spanish Jesuit, to run the powerful office instead.

During Mueller’s five-year term, the congregation amassed a 2,000-case backlog and came under blistering criticism from Irish abuse survivor Marie Collins, who had been tapped by Francis in 2014 to advise the church on caring for abuse victims and protecting children from pedophile priests.

Collins resigned from the papal commission in March, citing the “unacceptable” level of resistance from Mueller’s office to heeding the commission’s proposals. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/religion/pope-declines-to-renew-mandate-for-german-doctrine-chief/2017/07/01/bf0fa896-5e46-11e7-aa69-3964a7d55207_story.html?utm_term=.39f396ab0aa6

It would seem that this will greatly reduce Cardinal Gerhard Mueller’s chance of being the next pontiff.

Pope Francis faced criticism this week when Caridnal George Pell, the number 3 man in the Vatican, announced he would go to Australia to face sexual abuse charges (see Vatican’s #3 facing sex abuse charges; WND reports on lies and Islam). Francis has faced criticism that he has not moved fast enough on these matters, so this action signals that he is doing something.

The Church of Rome has long had pedophiles and other sexual abusers.

But now, more people are willing to go public about it–and this has cost the Roman Catholics a lot of money (e.g. ‘Audit of US Catholic church shows sharp spike in sex abuse reports’).

It seems that Pope Francis is realizing that changes in how this matter is dealt with are necessary. These scandals affect his plans for ecumenical and interfaith unity–so expect more actions from Rome about them.

Rome would have less of these issues if it simply allowed its priests and bishops to be married like the Bible endorses (Titus 1:5-7; 1 Timothy 3:1-5; 1 Corinthians 9:4-6; see also Was Celibacy Required for Early Bishops or Presbyters?).

Canada celebrates its 150th, but pushes internet and biblical censorship

Saturday, July 1st, 2017

COGwriter

On July 1, 1867, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain and a federation of four provinces: Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Ontario; and Quebec. The anniversary of this date was called Dominion Day until 1982.

Since 1983, July 1 has been officially known as Canada Day. Today is the 150th anniversary of Canada being granted its self-governing status, but not all, are celebrating:

1 July 2017

Celebrations are taking place across Canada as the country marks the 150th anniversary of its confederation.

The main events are taking place in the capital Ottawa, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to attend and a huge security operation in place.

They will be addressed by PM Justin Trudeau, as well as Prince Charles, whose mother, the Queen, is Canada’s head of state.

But some indigenous groups complain their treatment has been overlooked.

A teepee has been set up on Parliament Hill in Ottawa to protest against events, in what organisers called a “reoccupation”. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40468161

Here is some insight from Time as to why Canada became self-governing and some other details related to it:

After the Northern U.S. states won the American Civil War, there was a big concern in British North America and London that “the victorious Americans up North would take Canada, and much of the motivation [for uniting the provinces] was to have a stronger line of defense against the U.S.,” says Peter H. Russell, a political scientist who specializes in Canadian history. “The other thing was, the constitution-makers — we call them ‘Fathers of Confederation’ — were convinced that what led to the Civil War was a weak federation, so they tried to create a much stronger federal government than America has.” …

The name Canada wasn’t established in 1867, however; it’s derived from the Huron-Iroquois word “kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement” and had been in use since the 16th century, when locals pointed French explorer Jacques Cartier in the direction of the “village” now known as Québec City. That Canada became a “Dominion” is also a uniquely American story, Russell argues. The Confederation was originally to be named a “kingdom” of Canada until “the British foreign office said, ‘The Americans won’t like a kingdom on their border, call it something else, or we’re going to have bad relations with the Americans.'”

Leonard Tilley, one of the Fathers of Confederation, was inspired to suggest the word ‘dominion’ by Psalm 72:8, which states that Jesus Christ “shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.” (The Latin version, “A Mari Usque Ad Mare,” became the country’s national motto.) So that’s why Canada Day was originally known as “Dominion Day” when the July 1 national holiday was established in 1879. http://time.com/4828595/canada-day-150-years/

Basically, Canada was granted a self-governing status as the British were concerned that the USA might take it over. And it chose the term “dominion” based on the Bible.

But Canada does not accept the Bible at this time.  Since a court decision in 2002, Canada has restricted freedom to quote and cite the Bible (watch Canadian censoring of the Bible). It also passed a motion limiting giving one’s view of Islam (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-03-24/canada-passes-blasphemy-bill-silence-critics-islam).

Last month, local Canadian officials prohibited a Protestant school from being able to teach certain scriptures from the Bible. Here is an account of this from Canada:

Our Constitution has religion hard-wired into it — the word Catholic is in our Constitution four times, specifically to protect religious education. That’s part of the grand bargain of Canada, uniting French Canada and English Canada.

It’s shocking, but it’s not surprising. Christianity has been driven out of the public square everywhere in Canada. But surely this is a new low — Christianity is actually being banned in a Christian school.

Government bureaucrats would never dream of telling Muslim schools they couldn’t teach passages from the Koran — even ones that call for the murder of infidels and apostates. But banning the Bible is now official school board policy.

And, not surprisingly, the media and the political class are silent. Even supposedly Christian or conservative politicians are keeping their heads down — they don’t want to be attacked by the leftist mob at the CBC.

The school board is digging in. They’re closing ranks around Laurie Skori the chair. They’re bullying the school. David Eggen, the NDP education minister, he hates Christian schools, wants to shut them down, has taken steps to shut others down. He’s an anti-Christian bigot who doesn’t seem upset about this censorship in the slightest. 06/19/17 https://news.google.com/news/section?hl=en&ned=us&q=%22Battle+River+School+board%22

So, Canadian officials are often not acting in a manner consistent with what Canada was supposed to stand for.

If all that were not too much, a Canadian court decided this week that it has authority over internet around the world and in the USA:

Canada Says It Has Authority to Censor Internet in United States

June 29, 2017

This seems like a bad thing:

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled against Google on Wednesday in a closely-watched intellectual property case over whether judges can apply their own country’s laws to all of the Internet. In a 7-2 decision, the court agreed a British Columbia judge had the power to issue an injunction forcing Google to scrub search results about pirated products not just in Canada, but everywhere else in the world too. http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/06/canada-says-it-has-authority-to-censor-internet-in-united-states/

June 28, 2017

The Canadian Supreme Court today ruled the country has the authority to demand Google censor and remove links to certain web pages or online content.

The idea that governments can force Google to deindex links to pages is unfortunately not new (see the European Union’s “right to be forgotten“). What matters internationally in this case is the government is forcing Google to remove links from searches regardless of where the Internet user is. That is to say: Canada is demanding the authority to censor the internet outside of its physical borders and control what people who are not Canadian citizens can find online.

Today’s court ruling declares that because the Internet doesn’t have any borders, when Canada decides Google has to censor content it should be a global order: “The Internet has no borders — its natural habitat is global. The only way to ensure that the interlocutory injunction attained its objective was to have it apply where Google operates — globally.”  …

A closer examination highlights the potential for abuses. And claiming the authority to censor Google links everywhere in the world is a decision begging to be abused. http://reason.com/blog/2017/06/28/canada-claims-authority-to-censor-your-i

Regular readers of this COGwriter.com news page have been aware that things like this were coming. Notice, for example, something posted on this page back in 2011:

I have long expected government censorship (including the internet and perhaps other forms of social media) … I will again gone on record to declare that I believe that stopping/interfering some of us … to get out our message on the internet and/or other media is likely to be something that the USA and perhaps other governments will do as we get closer the the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7) (Thiel B. UK’s Cameron May Call Out the Troops and Restrict Social Media. COGwriter.com, August 11, 2011)

On October 2, 2016, we also put up a video titled Internet Control, Famine of the Word, and 666.

More and more, in Canada, as well as other lands (see yesterday’s post: Germany approves ‘same-sex marriage’ and sets fines for Facebook, etc. to crack down on ‘hate speech’) we are seeing governments taking steps to remove/control content on the internet.

This was partially because the prophet Amos was inspired to record the following:

11 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God,
“That I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread,
Nor a thirst for water,
But of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 They shall wander from sea to sea,
And from north to east;
They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord,
But shall not find it. (Amos 8:11-12)

Notice that the Bible tells of a time that will come when the word of God will not be found. I do not believe that this means that there will be no more Bibles–but that those wanting to better understand it will have trouble finding explanations.

Amos is referring to something as dramatic as having truth being scarce. In the 21st century that logically would point to it being taken off the internet. In the 21st century, the internet is accessed by people in every country, and thus some type of internet restriction/suspension/site removal is coming–more than what we have seen thus far.

We are getting closer to this time. More and more are starting to see that there are plans to censor speech from the internet.

That is part of why we in the Continuing Church of God are preparing for the ‘short work’ (Romans 9:28) and the coming ‘famine of the word.’

This censorship will one day be part of the coming famine of the word that the prophet Amos foretold.

Consider, however, that Jesus said:

4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. (John 9:4)

Philadelphian Christians want to respond to the doors that Christ opens to proclaim the gospel (2 Corinthians 2:12; 1 Corinthians 16:8-9; Colossians 4:2-4) and do the work. We will stand up for the truth, despite realizing that the ‘famine of the word’ that the prophet Amos referred to is coming. We must do the work and persevere to the end.

Jesus warned:

12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.  13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. (Matthew 24:12-13)

Officials in the Canadian and other governments around the world do not respect the laws of the Bible and push their own morality. Sadly, this has affected many–though the faithful who endure will be saved.

Currently, it is still time to:

1 Cry aloud, spare not;
Lift up your voice like a trumpet;
Tell My people their transgression,
And the house of Jacob their sins. (Isaiah 58:1)

Which is part of what we in the Continuing Church of God are doing. We have denounced, not only sins that the world sometimes seems to consider politically correct, but also sins that many claimed COGs will not do, because of their own concerns about their political fates (watch CCOG, a corporation sole, not a 501(c)(3)) and/or fates that could happen if they offended their financial supporters if they told the truth to truly fulfill Isaiah 58:1 (e.g. Are Violent Sports Evil?).

Furthermore, notice something that Jesus prophesied:

14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14)

We in the Continuing Church of God are diligently preaching the good news of the Kingdom of God. The time will come when this will be considered sufficiently “politically-incorrect” or “hate-speech” that some pretense to stop it from being proclaimed on the internet will be used by one or more governments. But since Jesus said that this Kingdom of God will preached to the world as a witness, that the type of witness God wants to have happen will come to pass–and then the end will come.  It will be after that witness that the ‘famine of the word’ that Amos spoke of will come to pass AND the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21) will begin.

Many in and out of the government have plans and are watching the internet with plans to deal with materials that they some day hope to silence. Sadly, the type of society that George Orwell wrote about is taking shape. Many realize it, but do not know what do to about it. But many can be called now (see What Did Christ Mean – Many Are Called, But Few Are Chosen?).

Yet, there is good news as Jesus will return and the Kingdom of God will come and replace the Beast’s controlling system (Revelation 13:16-18) that we see being put together today. And have no doubts, the type of Babylonian Beast society that the Bible warned about for the end times is truly taking shape. More and more government proposals are consistent with this.

Even from Canada.

We are getting closer to the end. An end that will not bode well for those in Canada (nor the USA, UK, Australia, and New Zealand for that matter).

This is the first part of a multi-part sermon series on the Gospel According to Mark. In it, Dr. Thiel addresses the view of ‘most scholars’ that Mark did not write this account. He also reads each and every verse in the first two chapters of Mark’s Gospel. He discusses prophecies, baptism, miracles, the work of God, the kingdom of God, church history, married bishops, and disbelief.
