Zenit.org reported the following:

Pontiff Praises Ecumenical Study of St. Augustine

Urges Symposium to Find Points of Convergence

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy, SEPT. 3, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI has urged a symposium bringing together Orthodox and Catholic theologians to study St. Augustine to discover points of convergence between the two traditions. The Pope said this in a letter he sent today to Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, on the occasion of the 11th Inter-Christian Symposium, which began today in Rome.

The three-day meeting was organized by the Franciscan Institute of Spirituality of the Pontifical University Antonianum and the Aristotle Orthodox Theological Faculty of Thessalonica.

The Catholic-Orthodox symposiums, aimed at promoting unity, have taken place alternatively in locations with Catholic or Orthodox majorities since 1992.

But Catholics (especially American and British-descended ones) should be very concerned about these type of meetings for two reasons.

The first reason is that the Eastern Orthodox expect the Vatican to compromise doctrinally.

The Orthodox have long taught that the Church of Rome (known sometimes as Latins in their writings) will change several doctrines to those of the Orthodox.  A document known as the Anonymou Prophecy of 1053 refers to this as the “Deferring of the Latins to the error-free faith of the Orthodox”, it then claims “The Orthodox Faith will expand from East to West” (Tzima Otto, p. 116).

Here is an explanation from Orthodox scholar H. Tzima-Otto (bolding in original):

Many Catholic prophecies speak of the victory of the ‘true Catholic faith’, while Orthodox prophecies, although they agree on everything else, predict a victory of the ‘true Orthodox faith’…When we speak of the future Council, it is bound to be ecumenical…there will come a true re-unification of the Christian Churches…This Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church is not going to be Roman Catholic as understood today…

The error-free Orthodox faith…The Orthodox did not experience a Vatican II, they did not begin to rewrite Scriptures…Hence, error-free in the sense that it has not been contaminated by satan…(Tzima Otto, pp. 120-122)

Thus, the Orthodox expect Rome to change its doctrines, because they feel that the Roman Catholic Church adopted errors from satan.

Notice that according to another Byzantine prophet, the final (the Orthodox recognize seven previous ones) ecumenical council satisfies what “heretics” want:

Saint Nelios the Myrrh-Gusher (died 1592): During that time the Eighth and last Ecumenical Synod will take place, which will satisfy the contentions of the heretics…(Tzima Otto, p. 111).

By satisfying “heretics”, clearly this council compromises and changes the religion, which will be called “Catholic”.  If heretics are truly heretics, should their complaints be satisfied?

A prophecy by a Roman Catholic shows that after its church is changed (“reformed” below), the Orthodox will come back:

Roger Bacon (died 1294): There shall arise a…priest to reform the Church.  The Greeks will return (to the Church)…there will be one fold, one shepherd (Culleton, The Prophets and Our Times, p. 149).

All (Catholic or otherwise) should be careful, compare their teachings with the Bible, pray to God, and not accept doctrines that are unbiblical for the sake of this coming ecumenical unity.  For one example, I believe that Rome, and not the Orthodox, are correct about the “Filioque” teaching.

The second reason that unity is not desirable is that a leader is expected to rise up, change Catholicism to be more ecumenical, and destroy the American and British-descended nations (USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand).  Here are a few “private prophecies” that suggest that:

Werdin d’ Otrante (13th century): All the sects will vanish. The capital of the world will fall…The Great Monarch will come (Connor, Edward. Prophecy for Today. Imprimatur + A.J. Willinger, Bishop of Monterey-Fresno; Reprint: Tan Books and Publishers, Rockford (IL), 1984, p. 33).

Saint Cataldus of Tarentino (c. 500): “The Great Monarch will be in war till he is forty years of age….he will assemble great armies and expel tyrants from his empire. He will conquer England and other island empires” (Connor, p.30).

Mother Shipton (d. 1551) “The time will come when England shall tremble and quake…London shall be destroyed forever after . . . and then York shall be London and the Kingdom governed by three Lords appointed by a Royal Great monarch (Culleton, p. 163).

The “capital of the world” is apparently the USA.

Notice also the following (bolding in the original):

Our blessed Mother through Father Gobbi of the Marion Movement…provided several messages…

On November 15, 1990: Mary spoke about the great trial coming to the United States and for all humanity.  The Blessed Mother specifically mentions the United States will know the hour of weakness and of poverty as well as “the hour of suffering and defeat”.  The thunder of God’s justice will have arrived:

…”…Sins of impurity have become ever more widespread, and immorality has spread like a sea which has submerged all things. Homosexuality, a sin of impurity which is against nature, has been justified; recourse to the means of preventing life have become commonplace, while abortions,–these killings of innocent children–have spread and are performed in all areas of your homeland. The moment of divine justice and of great mercy has now arrived. You will know the hour of weakness and poverty; the hour of suffering and defeat; the purifying hour of the great chastisement…” America will know poverty and defeat! Those are strong statements made by the Virgin herself. Never before have we known something like this on a national scale (Flynn, Ted and Maureen. The Thunder of Justice. MaxKol Communications, Inc. Sterling (VA), 1993pp. 341,342).

Since I do not believe that Jesus’ mother Mary actually said the above (see Mary, the Mother of Jesus and the Apparitions), perhaps I should add that even the demons know that the Bible condemns homosexuality and abortion, as well as the fact that the USA is prophesied to be destroyed.

But I would like to emphasize for American and British Catholics that there are many private “Catholic” prophecies that tell of the rise of a militaristic leader who, along with a pope (an antipope) will change the Catholic religion and then destroy the American and British-descended peoples.

This, sadly, is where the ecumenical discussions of the past couple of decade are leading to.

No American Catholic that I have spoken with considers that either of the two outcomes (doctrinal compromise with the Orthodox or the destruction of the Anglo-nations) is a good thing.

Jerusalem

COGwriter

Jerusalem has now been shown to have been significant for longer than many had thought:

Massive Canaanite walls reveal Jerusalem’s might long before King David was crowned
Haaretz – Sept 3, 2009
Extensive fortifications recently discovered in the archaeological excavation in Silwan in East Jerusalem go back about 3,700 years, to the biblical period of the Patriarchs, revealing that Jerusalem at that time was significantly larger and stronger than previously believed.According to the director of the excavation, Prof. Ronny Reich, the fortifications – the largest ever discovered in this area – were meant to create a protected link between the fortress-city in the area, known as the City of David, and the Siloam Spring. The fact that the spring was located outside the city walls was a major weakness in the city’s ability to defend itself, Reich says.
“The construction of a protected passageway was a possible solution to the contradiction of the spring – the source of life for the inhabitants of the fortress in case of emergency – being located in the most inferior and vulnerable place in the area,” Reich, of the University of Haifa, explained. In later periods, too, Jerusalem’s rulers attempted to connect the spring to the city via walls and tunnels. No fortifications of this size have ever before been discovered from the time of the First Temple, considered the zenith of Jerusalem’s development in the biblical period. The next period of such massive construction would not be for another 1,700 years, during the time of King Herod in the Roman period.
The Canaanite walls the archaeologists discovered are about two meters apart, rise to a height of some eight meters in some places and are made of gigantic stones, three to four meters thick. About 24 meters have been exposed, but excavators say this is only one-third of their original length.
Excavation of the walls has been underway for about a year by the Israel Antiquities Authority, funded by Elad, the association that runs the nearby City of David antiquities site.
The walls have been dated by pottery to the period archaeologists call the Middle Bronze Age, better known as the “Period of the Patriarchs.” At that time, Jerusalem was a kind of city-state – a fortress surrounded by farming plots. The massive nature of the fortifications has convinced archaeologists that the city was apparently larger and stronger than they had previously believed.
“To move such large stones, you need know-how and you need power,” Reich says, “because a group of people doing the building needs a society to support them economically and a ruler to tell one group to work and the other group to support them.”

Passage Found, May Have Been Used by Abraham

Israel National News – Sept 2, 2009
A Jerusalem walkway from the times of the Patriarch Abraham, protected by a wall of large rocks, has been discovered, and will be displayed to the public…http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/133234

Skeptics have long raised bogus arguments against Jerusalem being as important as the Bible had indicated.  It is always nice when archaeology uncovers supporting truth on biblical matters.

Ukrainian Orthodox Officially Ask to be Independent of Russia

Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople

Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople

COGwriter

In a move that was not unexpected, a branch of the Eastern Orthodox in Ukraine officially have asked to become independent:

Ukraine splinter church seeks independence

By MARIA DANILOVA (AP) – 3 days ago

KIEV, Ukraine — A breakaway Orthodox Christian church in Ukraine is pressing its call for recognition as a legitimate entity independent of the Moscow-based church that dominates the faith in the former Soviet Union, officials said Monday.

The appeal comes weeks after the head of the Moscow-based Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, visited Ukraine and criticized splinter churches seeking independence.

The Ukrainian Autocephalous Church sent an official request last week to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, the spiritual leader of the 250 million world’s Orthodox Christians. It said the church “is ready and strives” to come under Constantinople’s jurisdiction as an independent group.

Spokesman Yevhen Zapletnyuk said the Ukrainian Autocephalous Church believes that winning recognition from Bartholomew would will help heal the rifts among Ukraine’s Orthodox believers, many of whom want to come out of Moscow’s shadow.

“We have extended a hand,” Zapletnyuk told The Associated Press. “We believe this is the way to salvation.”

Allegiance in Ukraine’s predominant Orthodox Christian faith is split among three major churches. The Ukrainian Autocephalous Church and the larger Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kiev Patriarchate have lobbied Constantinople for recognition as legitimate and independent of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate, which is subordinate to Patriarch Kirill…

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kiev Patriarchate, which broke away after the 1991 Soviet collapse, claims 14 million parishioners and some 3,000 priests, and opinion polls show it is gaining popularity. The Russian-affiliated Ukrainian Orthodox Church claims 28 million followers in Ukraine and more than 9,000 priests. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gaLTUHZM4yMTS3zCHs9wy94ZnvYwD9ADQFPG0

It is not totally clear how Patriarch Bartholomew will handle this.  If he accepts this, then it will likely cause a major rift between him and Patriarch Kirill of Russia.

And that is not something that I believe that Patriarch Bartholomew wants.  I believe that he is working towards unity within the Orthodox and ultimately with Rome as well.

I reported about a previous request from Ukraine in June of 2008 (see Ukraine Moving Away From Russia for details) for independence from the Russian Orthodox.

Since the official status of the Eastern Orthodox in the USA is still unclear after two centuries (and no official answer was finalized from the Ukrainian request last year), this might suggest that Patriarch Bartholomew will simply receive the request from the Ukrainians and neither accept nor officially deny the request.  He will likely try to work behind the scenes to attempt to minimize dissent between the Russians and the independently-minded Ukrainian splinter.

There was a 7.0 earthquake in Indonesia on Wednesday, September 2nd:

Indonesian Death Toll Reaches 44 Following 7.0-Magnitude Quake

By Yoga Rusmana and Aaron Sheldrick

Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) — A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the Indonesian island of Java yesterday, killing at least 44 people and destroying about 800 homes, disaster agencies and officials reported.

The quake hit at 2:55 p.m. Jakarta time at a depth of 50 kilometers (31 miles) off the south coast of Indonesia’s most populous island, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site. It’s the strongest since a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in India’s Andaman Islands on Aug. 10, according to USGS.

The quake rocked buildings in the capital, Jakarta, and forced evacuations of businesses and hotels.

“The impact of the quake was felt in Jakarta, Central Java and West Java,” said Arifin M. Hadi, head of disaster management at the Indonesian Red Cross. “The magnitude was high and the scope was wide so we are getting reports of damage from many towns. A university building in Tasikmalaya has also collapsed.”

West Java Governor Heryawan said at least 44 people were killed in that region, the Antara state news agency reported today. Most were buried in landslides or under collapsed houses, Antara said. The quake destroyed 795 homes, along with mosques and schools, Antara said. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aiiOlqCl8gTQ

Indonesia has suffered from many earthquakes in the past several years and has lost thousands of people to them.

But more are coming (Matthew 24:7; Luke 21:11).

The Bible warns of a time when there will be such a massive earthquake, that the islands will be no more.

Canada’s Shaky Situation

Canada has been a little shaky lately:

CANADA FX DEBT-C$ rattled by risk aversion and election talk

* Canada Liberals will vote against government

* C$ hit intraday low after Liberal leader spoke

* Bonds stronger as stocks weaken; eye on Friday jobs data (Updates to close)

By Ka Yan Ng and Frank Pingue

TORONTO, Sept 1 (Reuters) – Canada’s dollar ended lower for the third straight session on Tuesday as economic concerns sent investors into safe havens like the U.S. greenback while the threat of a federal election also dealt the currency a blow.

The move out of the Canadian dollar intensified during the second half of the North American session after the country’s official opposition Liberal Party said it would not support the minority Conservative government. [ID:nN01496127]

The news makes a fourth election in just over five years seem very likely and quickly sent the Canadian dollar to its lowest level of the day when it touched C$1.1068 to the U.S. dollar, or 90.35 U.S. cents.

Political uncertainty tends to put pressure on a country’s currency.

“Generally speaking the rule of thumb is that the Canadian dollar does tend to be a little more volatile during elections simply because of some uncertainty over policy,” said Doug Porter, deputy chief economist at BMO Capital Markets.

“But I think it’s important to point out the fact that the U.S. dollar is on a bit of tear today in any event, even before this announcement, and I think it just really compounds what had already been an ugly backdrop for the Canadian dollar.”

The Canadian dollar had been pinned lower for most of the first half of the session as investors concerned that stock prices have run too far ahead of the economic recovery opted to pocket recent gains and unload riskier assets, which helped boost the greenback’s safe haven appeal.

The Canadian dollar closed at C$1.1041 to the U.S. dollar, or 90.57 U.S. cents, down from C$1.0950, or 91.32 U.S. cents, at Monday’s close.

That was well off C$1.0910 to the U.S. dollar, or 91.66 U.S. cents, a level it reached after data that showed the U.S. manufacturing sector grew in August, boosting the appeal of riskier assets…

Friday’s key jobs report is expected to show Canada shed 10,000 jobs in August, while the unemployment rate is pegged to rise to 8.7 percent. U.S. jobs data is also due on Friday. http://www.reuters.com/article/usDollarRpt/idUSN0149895820090901

Now perhaps I should add that the first news item I saw this morning indicated that the C$ was stable this morning.  But there still are concerns in Canada about its dollar, economy, and upcoming election.

Despite having natural resources and many overseas international trading partners, because of its geographic location, its economic history, and what is recorded in biblical prophecy, Canada is tied in with the United States of America.

To a great degree, Canada is expected to share the fate of the USA, which ultimately will not be good.  But the end will not occur before 2012.

Living Church of God Hymnal
The Hymnal of the Living Church of God Consists Mainly of Psalms and Biblical Passages Set to Music

COGwriter

In his commentary this week, CEM’s Ronald Dart wrote the following:

Working my way through Psalm 81 this morning, I came to “selah” for the umpteeth time and looked again at the Hebrew and the usage in the psalms. I am increasingly aware of the musical nature of the psalms, and at the same time noticing it in a parallel study in Ezekiel. I am coming to the conclusion that one of the reasons we have trouble with some passages is that we are interpreting them as prose when they are written to be sung…

This goes with another thing I am seeing: The change in perspective. When you start noticing that a few verses are sung in the first person about God, and the next verses are sung in the first person singular as from God, the psalm begins to take on a new shape. At first, I just assumed this was like the mixed metaphor, merely a reflection of Hebrew thought. But then it dawned on me that if this was in performance, it might be done by two singers or a singer and a chorus…

Now add the element of vocal interpretation. I had a high school speech teacher who, when interscholastic speech competition came along, entered me in, of all things, poetry reading. It turned out to be one of the best things any speech teacher ever did for me. It was there I learned how much meaning could be developed in reading text aloud. Pacing, volume, pausing, and other vocal effects could completely change the way the listener received the text. Every musical artist knows that even with a mechanical device like a piano, there can be enormous differences in interpretation of a piece of music.

This is a good reason for families and churches to have oral readings of scripture.

Most of the songs sang by early Christians were Psalms.

The Book of James teaches:

Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms (James 5:13).

The Apostle Paul noted:

Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm (1 Corinthians 14:26).

Post-biblical writers also suggest that this was the practice of those who professed Christ in the second century as well.

PCG: French President Expects End to Dominance of USA Dollar

Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France
French President Sarkozy

COGwriter

Repeating his position in July (see Russia and France: New World Currency), PCG reports that France’s President Sarkozy again is looking past the time that the USA dollar dominates international trading:

French President Sees End of Dollar as Single Reserve Currency

August 31, 2009

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that the dollar cannot remain the world’s only reserve currency as America loses its global dominance.

“The political and economic reality of a multipolar world will have to find sooner or later a translation on the monetary level,” said Sarkozy to foreign ambassadors at a reception in Elysee Palace last Wednesday. “A multipolar world can’t count upon one currency only.”…

Last Tuesday, the U.S. government announced that the budget deficit would reach $9 trillion over the next 10 years—$2 trillion more than previous projections. “That’s going to be negative for the dollar,” said Adam Boyton, a currency analyst at Deutsche Bank AG. Seeing the U.S. borrow so much will not increase investors’ faith in the dollar.

It is against this backdrop that world leaders are increasingly discussing the end of the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. At the G-8 meeting in Italy last month, Sarkozy joined Russia and China in calling for the end of the dollar as the world’s reserve currency.

With France, Russia and China calling for the end of the dollar’s dominance, and India, a strong U.S. ally, joining the chorus, 25 percent of the G-8 countries and the two largest developing economies in the world are all trying to reduce the importance of the U.S. dollar. This kind of pressure can’t be ignored for long…

Alternatives are now presenting themselves, however. Russia, China, India and Brazil announced in June they would purchase imf bonds as an alternative to U.S. bonds. No doubt these same nations will eagerly look for more alternatives. A replacement for the debt-ridden dollar will appear soon.

The reality is that the USA has been sliding by on the excess production of its dollar for some time to artificially prop-up its standard of living.

When the nations of the world finally decide that they will no longer support the dollar, the USA will have significantly more economic problems.  And ultimately, this will result in problems beyond any that are ever seriously discussed in the mainstream media.
