Abstinence Programs Work

It appears that some in the mainstream media is starting to wake up to the fact that abstinence programs work:

Abstinence-only programs might work, study says

I would add that pre-marital abstinence eliminates sexually-transmitted diseases, reduces heart-ache, eliminates unmarried pregnancies, is in accordance with the Bible, and leads to a better overall life.

The Bible specifically teaches:

14 “You shall not commit adultery.  (Exodus 20:14)

18 Flee sexual immorality. 19 Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. (1 Corinthians 6:18-19)

4 Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
(Hebrews 13:4)

Recent infamous incidents such as those involving John Edwards (see Commentary: Adultery, deceit and duplicity), Tiger Woods, and others suggest that they would have been much better off too to heed the instructions in the Bible.  The sexual teachings in the Bible are not just for teenagers.

The Next Contagion: Rising Interest Rates?

A reader sent me a link to the following that came out today:

The Next Contagion

by Martin D. Weiss, Ph.D. 02-01-10

The next contagion is beginning to spread around the globe.

It is …

The Collapse of Sovereign Government Bonds

http://www.moneyandmarkets.com/the-next-contagion-2-37578

While there may be a major physical contagion prior to this (like a bacteria, fungus, virus, or other epidemic), regular readers at the COGwriter page are aware that I have warned that increases in interest rates are likely to prove devastating to the US economy (and would also affect the world economy in a variety of ways).

And although rising 60% would increase US debt and have major consequences, I am ultimately expecting for much more than 60% rise from current rates.

Increased borrowing tends to lead to increased interest rates, as does a reduction in the confidence of a particular currency.  Printing up more dollars tends to reduce confidence in them.

The consequences of a massive rise in interest rates will be worse than most people in the USA probably have ever imagined.

February and Valentine’s Day

Monday, February 1st, 2010

COGwriter

Valentine’s Day is observed by many in February.  One survey suggests that Americans will spend 6% less this year for this holiday than last year.  Yet, despite the economic downturn, I noticed that the falsely labeled Christianity Today is again compromising from biblical principles in order to attempt economic gain as it is promoting some jewelry purchases on its “Valentine’s Day” page.

Actually, compromise with pagan traditions for membership and/or economic factors is essentially one of the major areas that separates those truly in Christ’s Church from those who think that they are part of it.  Furthermore, those in Christ’s Church try to live their lives in accordance with the law of God as Jesus did.  Days that were compromises with paganism were not endorsed by Jesus or His early followers.

And just because people use the name of Christ and call themselves Christian does not mean that they are faithful.

Notice what Jesus taught:

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ (Matthew 7:21-23)

Jesus did not observe Valentine’s Day or anything close to it.

Valentine’s Day is not a biblical holiday.

It is essentially based upon lawlessness and does not edify Christ.  11 years ago, an article in Christianity Today stated:

There are more tales of the “origins” of Valentine’s Day than arrows in Cupid’s quiver. As expected, most have something to do with pagan ritual (pretty much every holiday—from Christmas to Mother’s Day—has something to do with pagan ritual). Four centuries before Christ, Romans had a day called Lupercalia. Without going too much into it, I’ll sum it up as a sexual lottery. Pull names out of a box at random and couple with a young member of the opposite sex. After a year, you get to pick another name (Olsen T. Then Again Maybe Don’t Be My Valentine. Christianity Today. February 12, 1999).

So, Valentine’s Day was originally a sexual lottery according to Christianity Today. Yet, despite knowing that much of the truth, in 2010 (like it did in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009) Christianity Today still promotes and tries to sell gifts for Valentine’s Day.

Notice what the Roman Catholics teach,

The roots of St. Valentine’s Day lie in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on Feb. 15. For 800 years the Romans had dedicated this day to the god Lupercus. On Lupercalia, a young man would draw the name of a young woman in a lottery and would then keep the woman as a sexual companion for the year (The Origins of St. Valentine’s Day. http://www.americancatholic.org/Features/ValentinesDay/, January 31, 2004).

It is of interest to note that the same Catholic source states,

The Catholic Church no longer officially honors St. Valentine, but the holiday has both Roman and Catholic roots.

It is good that the Church of Rome no longer officially honors Valentine or the holiday.  None who profess Christ should observe this February “holiday”.

Bible Manuscript Older Than Critics Thought

In its latest update, LCG reported:

Newly Discovered Bible Text Supports Bible Understanding. “Scientists have discovered the earliest known Hebrew writing—an inscription dating from the 10th century B.C., during the period of King David’s reign… ‘It indicates that the Kingdom of Israel already existed in the 10th century BCE and that at least some of the biblical texts were written hundreds of years before the dates presented in current research,’ said Gershon Galil, a professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Haifa in Israel, who deciphered the ancient text.” To this point, most Hebrew scholars believed that most of the Old Testament originated in about the 6th century B.C. This new research suggests a date of at least 400 years earlier (LiveScience.com [Yahoo], January 15, 2010). Skeptics often criticize the Bible as being a collection of myths compiled by relatively recent writers. However, as time goes on and more credible research surfaces, it becomes increasingly evident that the Bible is indeed a source more ancient than “experts” traditionally have thought. Christ noted “…For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known” (Matthew 10:26). Could it be that, at the end of the age, God’s Truth will be evident to all, and that in order to continue to deny it, one will have to “ignore” widely known facts?

The fact is that many critics of the Bible cannot stand the fact that many prophecies contained in it have come to pass.  Thus, they tend to like to claim that it was written after certain prophecies were fulfilled.  But of course, since there is a real God who inspired the Bible, what it teaches has come to pass and will come to pass.

What the Bible teaches will affect you.
