CG7’s Calvin Burrell on Sabbath, Paul, and the Law

Friday, January 14th, 2011

COGwriter

In the Jan-Feb 2011 issues of CG7- Denver’s Bible Advocate, its former president Calvin Burrell wrote the following about the Sabbath:

It is true that our Lord rejected the typical Jewish rules of
His day for keeping Sabbath and made no effort to substitute
His own. It is also true that Scripture offers general guidelines
for Sabbath observance, including the example and teaching of
Jesus. They are . . .
Rest and Remember. As we cease the routine labor and commerce
of six workdays, our attention turns to celebrating God’s
glory in the created order and His image in the human family,
of which each seventh day is a memorial (Genesis 2:1-3; Exodus
20:8-11; Nehemiah 13:15-22; Mark 2:27, 28).
Adore and Aid. Sabbath is standard Bible time for assembly
with God’s people to gladly worship Him and rehearse His Word.
Christ’s works of mercy present Sabbath also as prime time for
good works toward hurting humanity (Leviticus 23:3a; Isaiah
58:13, 14; Luke 4:16; 6:1-10; Acts 13:14, 42-44; Matthew
12:12b).

CG7 had some problems (CG7 Gets Complaints About Sabbath Position) because of an article published in 2010 on the Sabbath (CG7 Allows Working on the Sabbath!).  Some verses that perhaps Calvin Burrell should have referred to in the this month’s article from the New Testament include the following:

Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.'” And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “And on the seventh day God rested from all his work.” And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.” It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience…There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience (Hebrews 4:3-6,9-11, NIV).

To address Paul and the law, Calvin Burrell wrote:

It is true that Paul can speak of law negatively,
stating what it cannot do. Many texts support the
gospel truth that law cannot justify (i.e., forgive,
acquit) folks from sinful states or actions (see Rom.
3:20a, 28; 4:15a; 5:20; 6:14, 15; 7:1-6, 8-11; 10:4;
2 Cor. 3:1-16; Gal. 2:15-21; 3:1-14; 4:22-31; 5:3, 4,
18; Eph. 2:4-9, 15; Phil. 3:3-14).
Paul’s theme in these texts is that law can never
be the ground for sinners to stand right before a holy
God. Indeed, it never had that purpose — not even
for Israel. From the need to find salvation by deeds of
the law, these verses say, we have been delivered by
the death and resurrection of Christ!
It is also true that Paul’s epistles contain positive
statements about God’s law with its righteous
commands for Christian life (see Rom. 2:13; 3:1,
20b; 7:7, 12; 8:4; 13:9; 1 Cor. 7:19; Eph. 2:10; 6:2; 1
Tim. 1:8-11; Titus 2:7, 14; 3:1, 8, 14).
These two lists of texts illustrate why Paul’s
teaching can be seen as contradictory. How can we
reconcile the apostle’s contrasting attitudes to the
deeds of the law?…

How can the law be both valid and invalid at the
same time? Simply because law may be conceived
as having more than one function. As a way to earn
God’s eternal favor, it is never valid! As a definition
for sin and standard for righteousness, it is always
valid!
Treating Paul’s competing statements in this
manner, we avoid “contradiction” and allow both
sets of texts to convey important truths. Those truths
both release us from the law’s penalty (our jail, or
death) and provide much incentive to avoid repeat
offenses.

Many, especially those who claim a certain type of Protestantism, misunderstand most of the truth about the law.  The truth is that while obeying it does not bring salvation (which only comes through Jesus Christ), intentionally disobeying can demonstrate lack of conversion.

United States of Europe Conference

12 Star Flag of Europe
EU Flag

COGwriter

A United States of Europe conference is happening this week.  Here is some information about it and what at least one of the attendees believes:

Joschka Fischer: European states must “combine interests” for common good

European Parliament – Jan 13, 2011

Joschka Fischer, former German Foreign Minister and leading Green politician was at the European Parliament Wednesday (12 January) to take part in a conference entitled “The United States of Europe – Towards a Transnational Society?” An avowed federalist on European matters, Mr Fischer used the conference to call for greater European unity and for Europe to “combine our interests” to weather the economic storm. We caught up with him and asked his views on the current state of Europe…

What should the Europe of the future resemble?

It’s very simple. Every day we are losing part of our sovereignty to the emerging powers. Yet we still wonder if we should abandon our sovereignty (in favour of the EU) or not. We are losing that sovereignty anyway! It’s just that it is going to non-European powers in the East (like China). We are losing importance and losing our position. The world is changing dramatically and the question that Europeans must answer is what will be the place of Europe in ten years.

Europe must be strong. This will only be possible if we combine our interests. It’s laborious but it is possible if we exercise our sovereignty in a common manner. The aim would be to enter the “United States of Europe“, a true association of democratic states that pool their sovereignty. But our national identities continue to exist and the United Nations will continue therefore to play a strong role.

Many within the EU believe that it has no choice but to move forward.

And for Europe to be “strong” it will no doubt decide that it must have stronger military abilities.  Abilities that I suspect that many in Europe are currently working on.

It may interesting to realize that when Europe was still recovering from being devasted in World War II, in the December 1948 issue of The Plain Truth Herbert W. Armstrong predicted a coming “United States of Europe” (Armstrong HW. Now It Can Be Told…The Plain Truth,December 1948, p. 5).   Additionally in October 2002, French politician Valery Giscard d’Estaing suggested that the name of the European Community should be changed to United States of Europe–and while that precise name is not necessary, it does show that the Church of God’s basic view has long been correct. We in the Living Church of God, of course, continue to warn about this emerging European Beast power in our telecasts and literature.

The “beast-power” is being formed in the 21st century–the final King of the North will soon rise up and be revealed–in Europe.

Some articles of possibly related interest may include:

Who is the King of the North? Is there one? Do biblical and Roman Catholic prophecies point to the same leader? Should he be followed? Who will be the King of the North discussed in Daniel 11? Is a nuclear attack prophesied to happen to the English-speaking peoples of the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand? When do the 1335 days, 1290 days, and 1260 days (the time, times, and half a time) of Daniel 12 begin? When does the Bible show that economic collapse will affect the United States?
Might German Baron Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg become the King of the North? Is the German Defense Minister one to watch? What do Catholic, Byzantine, and biblical prophecies suggest?
Is Russia the King of the North? Some claim it is. But what does the Bible teach?
Europa, the Beast, and Revelation Where did Europe get its name? What might Europe have to do with the Book of Revelation? What about “the Beast”? Is an emerging European power “the daughter of Babylon”? What is ahead for Europe?

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made some comments to Arab leaders today:

Clinton issues stark warning to Arab leaders

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday delivered a stark warning to Arab leaders that they will face growing unrest, extremism and even rebellion unless they quickly address depleting oil and water reserves and enact real economic and political reform.

“In too many places, in too many ways, the region’s foundations are sinking into the sand,” she told officials at the Forum for the Future conference. “The new and dynamic Middle East … needs firmer ground if it is to take root and grow everywhere.”

Clinton made her comments after visiting the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen and Qatar. During her trip, civil unrest continued unabated in Tunisia and Algeria, Egypt remained tense after disputed elections and a political crisis hit Lebanon, underscoring what Clinton said where deep concerns about trends in the Middle East…”While some countries have made great strides in governance, in many others, people have grown tired of corrupt institutions and a stagnant political order,” she said.  http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2011-01-13-clinton-warns-leaders_N.htm

While I do not doubt that she feels she had good intentions, the reality is that the Arabs are not likely to move towards the type of government and government social programs that Mrs. Clinton probably hopes for.

The civil unrest in Tunisia and Algeria are ultimately likely to spread across much of the Arab world.  The historical Arab answer to this is to turn to a strong leader who will rise up, not simply to deal with graft.

The Bible warns that a strong leader, called the King of the South in Daniel 11, will rise up once again in what appears to be heavily Arabic-populated lands.  The situation that Mrs. Clinton was commenting upon seems to be part of what may be needed for this leader to arise.

Australian and Brazilian Disasters

The situations in Australia and Brazil have to be very difficult for people affected by the rains and flooding:

Deaths from Brazil floods, landslides at 361

RIO DE JANEIRO | Thu Jan 13, 2011 6:20am EST

RIO DE JANEIRO Jan 13 (Reuters) – The death toll from floods and landslides that devastated a mountainous region near Rio de Janeiro rose to 348 on Thursday, according to authorities in the three worst-affected Brazilian towns.

Heavy rains earlier in the week killed 13 people in Sao Paulo state, raising the death toll in southern Brazil to 361.

Hillsides and riverbanks in the picturesque Serrana region north of Rio collapsed after the equivalent of a month’s rain fell in 24 hours, destroying houses and killing many people as they slept early on Wednesday.  http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1326052920110113

Flood-hit Brisbane faces slow recovery

Queensland premier expects rebuilding job of ‘postwar proportions’

Last Updated: Thursday, January 13, 2011

Floodwaters are slowly receding in Australia’s third-largest city, but the people of Brisbane and other flood-ravaged Queensland communities were warned Thursday that they face a recovery of “postwar proportions.”

Floodwaters poured into more than 30,000 properties in the Brisbane area before the water level peaked early in the morning.

The swollen Brisbane River, which peaked at a lower level than expected, had already begun to recede by the afternoon, though water levels were expected to stay high for several days.

An LCG elder sent the following email:

Hi Everyone
Here is a link to some photos of the devastating floods in Queensland. This disaster has been labelled by the Queensland Premier Mrs Anna Bligh as “The most devastating natural disaster in Queensland’s history”. The photos on this link tell the heartbreaking story.

Dayrell Tanner

Many in these areas probably need our prayers.

Jesus warned about a time of troubles called the beginning of sorrows:

8 … And there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

We may be at this prophetic point as all the floods and other problems that have happened in the past year could be considered as “troubles”.

CEM Having Issues

Laodicea
Laodicea has many ineffective structures

COGwriter

Ronald Dart’s Chrisitian Education Ministries (CEM) has faced problems as Ronald Dart has had health problems for some time.  I learned the most of the following while out of the USA and have now gotten around to posting something:

As many of you know, I’ve been associated with CEM since 1999.  However, Ron and I have been friends and have worked together since 1980.  This past year was different and difficult, but I will not go into that on this Forum.  Let’s just say that it is time for me to hand the reigns over to someone else, and assist them any way Ron and tendered my resignation to him and Allie on Monday…Skip

Dear CEM forum members,

Under other circumstances, the resignation of board members would not be any cause for comment at all. CEM’s board members are selected and elected by the existing board members, and it is not unusual for a board member to resign. But at this time, CEM faces circumstances which it has not since Ron Dart started this organization in 1995. That is, Ron Dart is not able to personally direct the organization, or to provide his wisdom and insight to the board. All of you are aware of this important fact, and it makes these recent resignations seem more significant than perhaps they really are.

Let me reassure everyone o f one th y and intimately aware of Ron’s vision for CEM and his plans to fulfill CEM’s goals into the future. Ron’s vision for CEM will continue to guide our policies, and his plans for CEM’s future goals will be our blueprint going forward. I have never been one to seek the limelight. My name is not on the founding documents for CEM. I never wanted my name to be there. Do not let that fool you into believing that the concept for CEM was not a development of Ron and me prayerfully seeking God’s will for our lives and his will for our service to him.

We are working now to plan a glorious and uplifting Feast of Tabernacles in Sevierville, TN for 2011. The beautiful Smokey Mountains will be an inspiring setting in October. And the area offers many family-oriented attractions, from National Parks to amusement parks to museums and shows. We are developing a new format for the weekly Sabbath service that was being live-streamed from the headqu arters b e. We will not permit such a vital service to be abandoned, so we will go back to live streaming as soon as we have everything in place. Our radio programs continue uninterrupted, inspiring the lives of unknown numbers of people who have never attended a Sabbath church service, as well as many veterans of our tradition. The calls to our call center have not slowed down a bit, as people continue to order free CDs of the radio program, or place their orders for Born to Win series.

So, you see, nothing has changed at all. I am committed to keeping Ron’s vision alive. Everything you can do to help will be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Allie Dart

So, CEM is having more problems.  It looks like it will try to continue, and it may.

Deadly Rains Hit Brazil

Australia is not the only area being affected by rain and flooding:

(Reuters) – Floods and landslides devastated mountain towns near Rio de Janeiro, killing 147 people and bringing the death toll on Wednesday from heavy rains in southern Brazil to at least 160.

At least 122 people were killed in Teresopolis, about 62 miles north of Rio, town officials said, after hillsides and riverbanks buckled under the equivalent of a month’s rainfall in 24 hours, sending water and mud surging through communities.

At least 25 people were killed in two other towns in the region, local officials said.

The rains sweeping southeastern Brazil also killed 13 people in Sao Paulo state on Tuesday and snarled transport in the country’s financial capital.

About 50 people were believed missing just in Teresopolis, the city’s mayor, Jorge Mario, told Globo television.  http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70B5AM20110112

Food Costs Rising

U.S. crop stockpile thins as weather and demand drive prices
Reuters – Jan 12, 2011

The United States, long the breadbasket to the world, is expected to confirm on Wednesday that its grain stockpiles are the lowest in years, darkening hopes for any quick relief from surging global food prices. The U.S. Department of Agriculture was expected to show in its monthly crop report a further deterioration in supplies at home, and to forecast how severe weather was hurting harvests from such powerhouses at Argentina and Australia.

World grain markets have been surging on bad weather and rising demand. With this backdrop, governments around the world are increasingly worried about food inflation after the UN Food and Agriculture Organization recently said international food prices have topped the previous record set in 2008. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70B1BL20110112?feedType=RSS&feedName=domesticNews

Australia floods: Food prices ‘to rise 30%’
BBC – Jan 11, 2011

Food prices in Australia could rise by as much as 30% in the coming months as a result of the Queensland floods, it has been warned.

The investment bank JP Morgan says it expects food prices to spike, which will also push up headline inflation.

The bank’s chief economist in Australia said 50% of crops had been affected by the floods, with 20% wiped out…

But he warned of the impact that could be felt outside Australia.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12162952

France says concerned by surging global food prices

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70A2G320110111

Of course, food shortages are prophesied. Jesus warned that “famines” would be part of the “beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:7-8). In the Book of Revelation, food price inflation is predicted with the ride of the third horseman (Revelation 6:6).

Related to the third horseman of Revelation, Evangelist Richard Ames wrote:

The third seal presents a rider on a black horse, representing the scarcity of food and the resulting famine…Cynics say there have always been wars, famines and pestilences. But, as time goes on, we will see the four horsemen of the apocalypse intensify their ride, with increasing global consequences. (Ames R. The Middle East in Prophecy. Living Church of God, 2006, p. 24)

While we are not yet to the final intensified ride of that horseman, part of the “beginning of sorrows” that Jesus referred to could have started. Food shortages will affect Americans more than most here believe.

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)

Food prices are something to watch.

Laodicea
Laodicea has many ineffective structures

COGwriter

The Church of God, a Worldwide Association (COGWA, a recent UCG break-away group) reported the following today at its website:

January 10, 2011 – Mike Hanisko, president of the temporary Board of Directors opened the meetings at 8:30 a.m. by asking Tom Diaz to lead the group in prayer.

The first order of business was to ballot upon two proposals for selecting the Interim Governance Team…

The committee recommends that each congregation establish a bank account with an Employer Identification Number (EIN). We do not encourage areas to collect tithes locally, but at this point that remains a local option…

As for credentialing elders, Mr. Johnson said that electronic forms will soon be sent to all elders, but the exact process of credentialing must yet be determined by the Interim Governance Team. New ordination certificates will be issued as soon as the credentialing is completed…

Bruce Gore, Chairman of the long-term governance committee, updated everyone on the work of this committee. He thanked everyone for the input that has been given, including over 60 papers on this subject that have come from members and ministers. He noted that the papers represented the widest possible range of ideas.

He shared with everyone that the committee plans to offer several options for governance to the organization. If possible, we want to avoid mistakes of the past. Answering the question, “Can you guarantee that this won’t happen again?” he said, “No. But we all want to reduce politics and the turnover of administrators. We also want to minimize the amount of balloting.”…

the men who served on the Temporary Leadership Team and those who served on the Temporary Board now become the Interim Governance Team. Those serving on the Interim Leadership Team are Jim Franks, Doug Horchak, Clyde Kilough, David Register and Richard Thompson. Those serving on the Interim Board are George Evans, Ken Giese, Mike Hanisko, Greg Sargent and Roger West. Richard Pinelli next addressed the care of congregations. Mr. Pinelli reported that we have 54 pastors and administrators from the United States plus 14 international pastors who have resigned or been fired from our previous organization…

Mr. Franks then shared a document establishing our commitment to doctrinal integrity. This includes the following principles:

  1. We commit our support for the 20 fundamental beliefs as developed and approved by the elders in 1995.
  2. We commit to establishing a doctrinal review process for all publications that contain doctrinal material, whether posted on the Internet or printed. This process must involve levels of review and include senior ministers known for their doctrinal integrity.
  3. We commit to establishing a committee for doctrinal oversight, entrusted with the responsibility of resolving doctrinal conflict and answering doctrinal questions from within the organization, among the elders and among the membership.
  4. We commit to providing a process by which any elder or member may submit doctrinal questions and/or material for doctrinal review. This process will provide for several levels of review by senior ministers.

Ken Treybig then gave a presentation on preaching the gospel. We want to assure everyone that we are committed to doing this he said. Continuing, he noted that we must fulfill the commission Christ gave the Church. How we can do this with a smaller group? Perhaps it will have to be done in a measured way, most likely with an Internet focus, but also with print…

Balloting for the name of the new organization was then conducted by Jon Pinelli, who outlined the five choices and explained how the list had been narrowed to that number.

The above was not there yesterday, and for some reason, the COGWA website dropped off what it reported about January 11, 2011 (which was at the website last night, and only last night as far as I can tell).  Of course, technical problems happen with start-ups so that is understandable.

Since the leaders of COGWA have been used to having such a large portion of church income used for matters other than proclaiming the gospel it does not seem likely that they would truly change in approach. Another reason I believe this is that proclaiming the gospel was the lowest of 6 priorities that COGA (whose leaders now seemingly have affiliation with COGWA) established.  Using the internet is a less expensive way to reach people and may be what COGWA will hope will work as its primary means to try to accomplish Matthew 24:14.

In all that I have read about WHY the 150 or so ministers/elders left UCG in the past year, none whose resignation letters I recall reading have seemed to give lack of focus on proclaiming the gospel as the main reason for leaving UCG (United Church of God).

If you are or were part of UCG and are confused about what to do, please pray, fast, and study the Bible about this. Decide if you wish to follow the lukewarm or those that Jesus Christ has truly been using to do the work–those who have had the same basic governing principles for over 40 years.

I realize that neither I, Dr. Meredith, nor others in LCG are perfect. But hopefully we are trying to do the work that the Bible indicates that the church most faithful to the words of Jesus would do.

Those affected by this crisis who wish to support a more effective gospel-proclaiming organization should, despite our flaws, consider checking out LCG, as it has stood for proper church governance and the work since its foundation (which preceded its formation).

It’s decision time for those who have been affiliated with UCG. Most of those part of the COGWA and UCG leadership have already demonstrated, to me at least, that neither group intends to be Philadelphian. But that the choice of LCG still remains.

Gerald Flurry of the Philadelphia Church of God
Gerald Flurry

COGwriter

PCG’s Stephen Flurry, son of its self-declared prophet and apostle Gerald Flurry, reported the following:

Worldwide attendance stands at about 5,500. Serving those brethren, we have 72 ordained ministers—41 of them employed by the Church. Counting ministers and employees, 115 people work for the Church full-time. Another 60 are on payroll as part-timers. We’ve added 55 employees just since 2006, when the college first started turning out four-year graduates. Our total worldwide income in 2010 amounted to $20.6 million—a solid 5 percent increase over 2009. Seventy-two percent of that revenue is donated by members of the Philadelphia Church of God. The other 28 percent comes from co-workers and donors who voluntarily offer their financial support.

The above confirms what I have long reported, and that is that PCG (the so-called “Philadelphia Church of God”) was the third largest group in terms of attendees of the groups that came out of the old WCG (now, because of the splits in UCG, this could change).

Of course, I do not consider any of those who have declared themselves apostles this century are true apostles. And Paul warned that there would be false apostles.

The Apostle Paul wrote:

12 But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. (2 Corinthians 11:12-13, NKJV)

And I consider that Gerald Flurry is a false apostle and not God’s prophet.  Nor have I ever considered that PCG is Philadelphian.  But Stephen Flurry’s report confirms something I had heard a while back and that is that PCG had apparently lost some attendees, and thus far seems a little smaller than it was about ten years ago.

Teachings Unique to the Philadelphia Church of God Simply calling oneself ‘Philadelphia’ does not make one so (see Revelation 3:7-9), nor does Gerald Flurry calling himself “that prophet” or a variety of other titles make it so. Australia Flooding Getting More Dangerous

The flooding in Australia seems to be getting more dangerous:

The flood’s coming… flee for your lives: 40,000 homes in danger as deadly surge heads towards the centre of Brisbane

Tens of thousands of people have been told to flee Australia’s third largest city as catastrophic floods loom.

At least 40,000 homes are at risk from the waters expected to hit the centre of Brisbane today and tomorrow.

As an Anglo-descended nation, Australia is subject to the same blessings and cursings that the other Anglo-nations are also subject to.

Additionally, Jesus, of course, warned about a time with such issues that Australia is facing:

8 … And there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

We may be at this prophetic point as all the floods and other problems that have happened in the past year could be considered as “troubles”.  Notice something from LCG:

2010—A Deadly Year. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency reports that “Earthquakes, heat waves, floods, volcanoes, super typhoons, blizzards, landslides and droughts killed at least a quarter million people in 2010—the deadliest year in more than a generation. More people were killed worldwide by natural disasters this year than have been killed in terrorism attacks in the past 40 years combined.” FEMA head Craig Fugate said, “It just seemed like it was back-to-back and it came in waves” (www.apnews.myway.com, December 19, 2010). This year FEMA handled a record number of disasters. Many of the disasters of 2010 were natural, while others occurred because of poor construction and building homes in flood plains. Experts anticipate the scale of disasters in 2010 may continue in the years ahead. What many today do not realize is that Jesus Christ prophesied that increasing worldwide catastrophes would precede His second coming and are referred to as “the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:3-8). In the years just ahead, we will see more deadly disasters. However, the Bible also indicates that when Christ returns, He will bring peace to the earth and end the suffering caused by such catastrophes (Isaiah 35:1-6; Amos 9:13-15). For more information on what lies ahead, review our free booklet, Fourteen Signs Announcing Christ’s Return.

Without national repentance, Australia, and not just the USA, is doomed.
