Revelation shows the destruction of the world’s military

“Orthodox” 16th Century Representation of the “Apocalypse”

COGwriter

A reader that I know  sent me the following in an email:

Some day you may want to write about GOD’s destruction of the World’s Military in the Book of Revelation.
Most view Revelation from the perspective of the civil population, when in fact its a “rescue mission” that
primarily destroys man’s military operations.
Sample…
Meteors first…these halt ground troop, supply movements, destroy satellites, air force, navy, army equipment.
(stars fall, every mountain, island moved, all seek shelter, Rev 6:13-16)
Hail kills troops out in the open, lightning caused fires…massive storms strike.
Storms primarily strike Air Force and Navy. Military equipment destroyed by hail, lightning, fires,
(matches Exodus 9:24-25, Rev 8:7, 16:2)
Asteroid strikes earththird of ships (nuclear submarines, Navy ships) destroyed.  (Rev 8:8-9, 16:3).
Sea water desalinization equipment contaminated via “red algae”.
Comet strikes earthfresh water supplies for troops contaminated, kills many.  (Rev 8:11, 16:4)
Solar flares…Remaining Military satellites destroyed, radio communication equipment, GPS rendered useless
due to electromagnetic interference. (Rev 8:12, 16:8)
Volcanoes, earthquakes…Headquarters of the Beast struck with darkness. Halts air force, ground equipment,
Satellite communications.
Christ returns, Armageddon…destroys world’s military directly.
(Rev 16:14, 21, 19:19, Zechariah 14 entire chapter).

So, instead of writing much myself, I thought his quotes were a good foundation, to which I would add a few scriptural quotes:

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, “Come and gather together for the supper of the great God,  18 that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great.”   19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh.  (Revelation 19:17-21, NKJV)

7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. 9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. (Revelation 20:7-10)

2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”   (Revelation 21:2-5)

The world as we know it will be changed.  And changed for the better.

UCG Losses Now at 147+; COGWA Announces Services, Committees, etc.

Laodicea
Laodicea has many ineffective structures

COGwriter

The AC (“Abigail Cartwright”) site reported four more UCG ministerial losses, bringing its list to 147 ministers and elders that UCG lost in this crisis. Here are four more since my last detailed report:

  • Mr. Maurice Ledet (Local Elder), January 7, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. David Witt, (Local Elder, Minneapolis, MN), January 6, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. Charles May (Local Elder, Bentonville AR), December 31, 2010, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. James Capo, January 3, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • I met James Capo some time ago; the others are not familiar names to me.  The reason my headline says 147+ is that I thought there were one or two names missing from the above, and the names of the South Africans who apparently left do not seem to be on the list of 146 that I looked at, plus I learned of one other last night who is not yet on the list.

COGWA (the place that apparently many are now associating with–I presume COGWA will  soon be more forthcoming about who is with it) posted the following:

    Sabbath Service Webcast – January 8, 2011

Join us for a live webcast on the Sabbath of January 8 from Louisville, Kentucky. The service begins at 2:30 P.M. Eastern time and is available for both congregations and individual members. The webcast will be available in both English and Spanish.

I presume that COGWA intends to get its side of the crisis out to those who left UCG or who may be considering leaving UCG.  The Spanish translation announcement suggests that those who broke away from UCG in Latin America may be related to it.

Since I originally wrote this earlier today, COGWA made a few other news announcements.  It reported that a Bruce Gore is currently chairman of its “long-term governance committee”, with its “interim governance committee” chaired by a Dave Baker.  Andre Van Belkum of New Zealand gave the closing address to its “pre-conference leadership team” today.  A Dave Johnson is chairing its “immediate administrative needs committee”.

UCG was always into committees and COGWA may be as well.

    COGWA also reported:

January 7, 2011 – Today Feast Coordinators, camp directors and youth corps administrators met to consider the needs of the members of the Church of God, a Worldwide Association in these respective areas…

The mission statement of the long-term governance committee is: “Our mission is to recommend a structure founded upon biblical principles by which this new organization will be administered and to propose to the elders this structure for their consideration.”

The steps taken are close to what UCG did when it formed and confirms to me, at least, that COGWA’s top priority will not be public proclamation of the gospel.  Nor do I believe that it intends to look close enough at biblical governance to adopt the form that the Bible repeatedly endorses.

As I have repeatedly stated, I do not believe that the governmental structure of UCG ever would be effective in proclaiming the gospel to fulfill Matthew 24:14–nor do I believe that those who broke off and will become part of COGWA or other such groups will as well.

If you are or were part of UCG and are confused about what to do, please pray, fast, and study the Bible about this. Decide if you wish to follow the lukewarm or those that Jesus Christ has truly been using to do the work–those who have had the same basic governing principles for over 40 years.

It is my view that those affected by this crisis who wish to support a more effective gospel-proclaiming organization will consider checking out LCG, as it has stood for proper church governance and the work since its foundation (which preceded its formation). It’s decision time for those who have been affiliated with UCG.  The COGWA leadership has already demonstrated, to me at least, that it is not intending to be Philadelphian.

    Russian Orthodox Christmas Today

    Friday, January 7th, 2011

    Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev

    President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev

    COGwriter

Today, many Orthodox observe Christmas.  The President of Russia made the following comments:

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has offered Christmas greetings to Orthodox Christians, and to all Russian citizens.

He points out in his message that Christmas turns people to the values of good and love.

“These values have for centuries served to boost moral principles, to strengthen the cohesion of the Russian people and helped Russia to stand any trial”, Dmitry Medvedev writes in his message.

Festive liturgies were conducted in all Orthodox churches of Russia and almost 60 countries on all continents.

According to the Julian calendar, Christmas is also celebrated on January 7th by the Serbian, Jerusalem and the Georgian Churches, just as by many Eastern Rite Catholic Communities.  http://english.ruvr.ru/2011/01/07/38966578.html

The top political leaders of Russia have made it pretty clear in the past couple of years that the formerly atheistic Russians now officially endorse various aspects of the Russian Orthodox Church.  Today’s announcement is another signal in that direction.

Because of the growing ties between the Orthodox and Roman Catholics, this will likely lead to a temporary alliance between Russia and the coming European Beast power for a time.  But over time, Russia will realize that the ecumenical religion that will call itself “Catholic” will not be what it proclaims itself to be.  Until then, though, it does appear that Russia plans to more and more endorse at least the faith of the “Russian Orthodox” church.

Perhaps it should be mentioned that there is no evidence that early Christians celebrated the birth of Jesus.  There is no scriptural basis for celebrating it at all, and even less for picking January 7th (a mid-winter date is inconsistent with the practices of shepherds in Bethlehem at the time spending all night with flocks).

Here is why, according to Wikipedia today, that January 7th is used by some, though not all, Orthodox:

Eastern Orthodox national churches, including those of Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and the Greek Patriarchate of Jerusalem mark feasts using the older Julian Calendar. December 25 on that calendar currently corresponds to January 7 on the more widely used Gregorian calendar. However, other Orthodox Christians, such as the churches of Greece, Antioch, Alexandria, Albania, Finland and the Orthodox Church in America, among others, began using the Revised Julian Calendar in the early 20th century, which corresponds exactly to the Gregorian Calendar.

Basically, January 7th corresponds to the birthday of the sun-god Mithras (December 25th) on the old calendar, and that is why it is observed.  It is not a biblical date.  But those that observe it tend to minimize the ramifications of that.

LCG, Popes, the Patriarch of Constantinople, and the Image of Daniel 2

    Friday, January 7th, 2011

    Pope Benedict XVI

    COGwriter

We in the Living Church of God believe that the two legs of the image of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2 represent the old Eastern and Western legs of the Roman Empire.  We also believe that the feet of that image represent a power that is now developing in Europe.  A power that will be partly strong and partly fragile as it will not truly ever be cohesive.

Here is what the Daniel wrote:

31 “You, O king, were watching; and behold, a great image! This great image, whose splendor was excellent, stood before you; and its form was awesome. 32 This image’s head was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay.  34 You watched while a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

36 “This is the dream. Now we will tell the interpretation of it before the king. 37 You, O king, are a king of kings. For the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory; 38 and wherever the children of men dwell, or the beasts of the field and the birds of the heaven, He has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all — you are this head of gold. 39 But after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to yours; then another, a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others. 41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold — the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.”  (Daniel 2:31-45, NKJV)

So what does this mean for modern times?

The late Pope John-Paul II once publicly stated that the Roman and Orthodox Churches were the two lungs of the church, which suggests that they mutually are supportive, as two legs are. Hence Pope John-Paul II has acknowledged that the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches are two parts of the same body. They apparently make up the two legs and somewhat the two feet (with ten toes) of the image of the Beast warned against in Daniel 2:33.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, interestingly wrote of Europe (the Mediterranean continent) and the image in Daniel 2:

In the process of replacing boundaries, the conceptual continuity with the preceding Mediterranean continent…was assured by a theological interpretation of history: in connection with the Book of Daniel, the Roman Empire—renewed and transformed by the Christian faith—was considered to be the final and permanent kingdom in the history of the world in general, and therefore the association of peoples and states that was taking shape was defined as the permanent Sacrum Imperium Romanum [Holy Roman Empire]. (Raztinger J. Europe today and tomorrow: addressing the fundamental issues. Translated by Michael Miller. Ignatius Press, 2007, p. 13)

We can consider the rise of the Carolingian Empire, on the one hand, and the continuation of the Roman empire in Byzantium and its mission to the Slavic people, on the other, as the true and proper birth of the continent of Europe…(ibid, p. 17)

Greco-Christian, European culture of Byzantium…one of the two wings of Europe (ibid, p. 18).

    Latin [that is, Western] Europe…(ibid, p. 19)

    …the Christian idea of empire…the sacred foundation for history…(ibid, p. 20)

The two halves of the old Europe, before the modern era, had known essentially only one opponent that it had to confront in a life-or-death battle, namely, the Islamic world. (ibid, p. 22)

Believing Christians should…contribute to Europe’s recovery of the best of its heritiage and thus to the service of all mankind. (ibid, p. 34)

Dexter Wakefield, of the Living Church of God, made the following insightful comments about Cardinal Ratzinger’s writings in that book:

His analysis, of course, does not express the full meaning of this imagery. Yet in referring to the two iron legs of the Daniel 2 statue, the current pope shows that even the Roman Catholic Church has in the past recognized that the Roman Empire and its successor, the so-called “Holy Roman Empire,” are pictured in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. (Wakefield D. Will Islam Transform Europe? Tomorrow’s World magazine, November-December 2010, p. 17)

So, even the current pope realizes that the “Holy Roman Empire” is part of the image in Daniel 2 and that one leg/wing represents the Roman/Latin Catholic west with the other the Eastern/Greco/Byzantine east. Cardinal Ratzinger also seems to be teaching that the “Holy Roman Empire” is the last part of the image of Daniel 2 and that it is a good thing. Yet, he seems not to realize that in the end, God intentionally destroys the image, by attacking the last part (striking the feet it stands upon in vs. 34) which implies that God was not pleased with this image or its “sacred foundation”. Since the Bible is clear that God will destroy the final formation of that empire (Daniel 2:40-44), the development of a unified Europe to fulfill this is not something that should be encouraged.

Pope John Paul II (the pontiff prior to Pope Benedict XVI) stated:

By rediscovering the great cultural treasures of the Christian East, in a new dialogue of communion, we will also allow Christian witness to breathe at this level, with two “lungs“, making our rightful contribution to humanity’s future (Pope John Paul II. CHRISTIANITY HAS DEEPLY MARKED CULTURE OF PEOPLES. Angelus, 1 September 1996. Taken from: L’Osservatore Romano, Weekly Edition in English, 4 September 1996, “L’Osservatore Romano is the newspaper of the Holy See”. http://www.ewtn.com/library/PAPALDOC/JP960901.HTM viewed 11/16/07).

The Orthodox apparently agreed that they were and are one of the lungs as the Orthodox Metropolitan John of Pergamon stated to John Paul II:

As Your Holiness has aptly put it some years ago, East and West are the two lungs by which the Church breaths; their unity is essential to the healthy life of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church (Speeches of Pope John Paul II and Metropolitan John of Pergamon. Made in private audience following a Mass to celebrate the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. Rome, 28 June 1998. http://www.orthodoxresearchinstitute.org/articles/ecumenical/john_pergamon_john_paul2.htm viewed 11/16/07).

It should also be noted that the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I (whose “official title” is His All Holiness, Bartholomew I, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch) wrote:

Today, then, it is our obligation more than ever to reclaim the Christian roots of Europe and the spiritual, sacramental and doctrinal unity that it enjoyed prior to the schism of our two Churches. The re-evangelization of our peoples is “today, more so than ever before, timely and necessary, even within traditional Christian lands,” as we admitted and confessed in common here exactly one year ago.

Thus, we believe that Western and Eastern Europe must cease regarding themselves as foreign to one another…

Elder Rome has the foremost St. Peter as its apostle and patron. New Rome, Constantinople, has the brother of St. Peter, the first-called of the apostles, Andrew. Both invite us to the fraternal unity that they shared with each other and that can only be acquired when the cross becomes our point of reference and experience of approach.

Let us, therefore, beseech these two brothers and greatest of apostles that they may grant peace to the world and lead everyone to unity. (Bartholomew I’s Letter to Vatican Delegation. Zenit. December 5, 2007 http://www.zenit.org/article-21198?l=english).

The Patriarch of Constantinople is generally considered the first among equals within the Eastern Orthodox “sees”. Even if this unity with the Romans occur, individually the Orthodox Must Reject Unity with the Roman Catholics as unifying will make them part of Babylon (according to both biblical and Roman Catholic prophecy).

I strongly believe the Orthodox Must Reject Unity with the Roman Catholics and have had this published in 2007 on the internet and in The Journal: News of the Churches of God. Futhermore, many ecumenical meetings and pronouncements have been coming from those groups (for documented details see Ecumenism Advancing).

Sadly, history records that the Orthodox and the Roman Catholics were part of the old Roman Empire, that they both have had efforts to persecute the true Church of God (please see the article Persecutions by Church and State), and the Bible indicates that together they (with others) will accept a changed version of their religion and fulfill prophecies related to Babylon.  And for those who consider that remote at best, please consider that there are both Catholic and Orthodox prophecies looking for a re-establishment of Babylon.

But the Bible warns against the emergence of the final beast and tells of the destruction of the image of the beast as well as the end time Babylon.  Yet, this is what many are encouraging to be formed in Europe even today.  And we are getting closer to the time that this European power will suddenly rise up to rule again.

Was Part of Pergamos in Britain, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland?

    Ancient Pergamos

    COGwriter

It appears possible that some of the Pergamos era lived in Scotland, Ireland, and other parts of the British Isles.

Some have speculated that the Apostle Paul went to Britain, and this is possible.  However, whether Paul actually got there is not recorded in scripture.  Historical evidence, however, does seem to show that somehow early Christianity made it into the British Isles.

Here is one early 20th century claim by J.L. Gamble and C.H. Greene:

That Christianity was established in Britain between the years A.D. 51 and A.D. 61, either by the Apostle Paul himself or by converts made by him during his Roman imprisonment, is the testimony of many credible historians. Gildas the earliest British writer of history, born A. D. 520, says of the introduction of Christianity into the islands: “Meanwhile these islands, stiff with cold and frost, and in a distant region of the world, remote from the visible sun, received the beams of light, that is, the holy precepts of Christ – who is the true Sun, and who shows to the whole world his splendor, nor only from the temporal firmament, but from the height of heaven, which surpasses everything temporal – at the latter part, as we know, of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, by whom his religion was propagated without impediment.” Comparing this with the previous passage, the events mentioned appear to be limited by the ‘meanwhile’ to a period between the defeat of Boadicea, A.D. 61, on the one hand, and on the other to events not far distant – such as the defeat of Caractacus, A.D. 51. Therefore the testimony of Gildas is to the effect that the gospel was preached in Britain before the year 61. (Yeowell, p. 22.).[i]

Hippolytus, in the early third century, seems to have claimed that one of the seventy that Jesus sent out to preach (although no names are mentioned in the biblical account in Luke 10:1-20), ended up in Britain:

These two belonged to the seventy disciples who were scattered…

    Aristobulus, bishop of Britain.[ii]

If that is so, Aristobulus could have been placed in charge by one of the apostles as the seventy (Luke 10:1,17) had to have known the original apostles.

It is clear that by the early third century, some version of Christianity had made it into the British Isles. And as others have also indicated, this could have occurred earlier.  Eusebius, for one example, wrote that Jesus’ disciples reached the British Isles:

His disciples…to preach to all the Name of Jesus, to teach about His marvelous deeds in country and town, that some of them should take possession of the Roman Empire, and the Queen of Cities itself, and others the Persian, others the Armenian, that others should go to the Parthian race, and yet others to the Scythian, that some already should have reached the very ends of the world, should have reached the land of the Indians, and some have crossed the Ocean and reached the Isles of Britain.[iii]

    A team of writers wrote:

…the Celtic Church circumvented the Church of Rome and functioned as a repository for elements of Nazarean tradition transmitted from Egypt, Syria, and Asia Minor.[iv]

One researcher noted in the fifth and sixth centuries:

The Celtic church of this period often termed itself the Church of God.  How many of its members were really converted Christians, however, is difficult to determine. In some respects this group was similar to the church in the wilderness described by Stephen in Acts 7:38.[v]

According to 19th research by William Dawson, notice what the Celts/Kelts claimed in the late 6th/early 7th century:

The Keltic Churches of Ireland, of Galloway, and of Iona were at one with the British Church. These claimed, like Southern Gaul and Spain, to have drawn their faith from the Apostolic See of Ephesus. Their liturgies, or such fragments as have come down to us, bear marks of belonging to the Oriental family of liturgies.[vi]

Here is a report related to the period 549-1049, by Philip Schaff:

The term Culdee has been improperly applied to the whole Keltic church, and a superior purity has been claimed for it.

There is no doubt that the Columban or the Keltic church of Scotland, as well as the early Irish and the early British churches, differed in many points from the mediaeval and modern church of Rome, and represent a simpler and yet a very active missionary type of Christianity.

The leading peculiarities of the ancient Keltic church, as distinct from the Roman, are:

    1. Independence of the Pope. Iona was its Rome, and the Abbot of Iona, and afterwards of Dunkeld, though a mere Presbyter, ruled all Scotland.

    2. Monasticism ruling supreme, but mixed with secular life, and not bound by vows of celibacy; while in the Roman church the monastic system was subordinated to the hierarchy of the secular clergy.

    3. Bishops without dioceses and jurisdiction and succession.

    4. Celebration of the time of Easter.

    5. Form of the tonsure.

It has also been asserted, that the Kelts or Culdees were opposed to auricular confession, the worship of saints, and images, purgatory, transubstantiation, the seven sacraments…[vii]

Thus, it should be clear that, the true church was not limited to Asia Minor, but spread throughout many lands. It should be noted that it was the time of Passover (and not Easter), that was always supposed to be the issue. Also, the original church did not have the idea of seven sacraments, nor did the early church in the British, Irish, or Scottish regions.  Later, however, changes occurred and basically took over in this region.

The Catholic monk and historian Bede in the eighth century wrote about a group of churches and related leaders in Britain who did not agree with Augustine:

They do not keep Easter Sunday at the proper time, but from the fourteenth…They did other things too which were not in keeping with the unity of the Church. After a long dispute they were unwilling, in spite of the prayers, exhortations, and rebukes of Augustine and his companions to give their assent, preferring their own traditions to those which all the churches throughout the world agree in Christ.[viii]

In other words, from the time of Augustine (late fourth/early fifth century) it was clear that there were those in Britain who kept the Passover on the 14th and who held to practices that the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox confederation of churches did not hold.

Where did this church into the British Isles come from?

Well, it logically, did not come from Rome, but from the Smyrnaeans, that is, the prior Church era in Asia Minor and Palestine. Dr. T.V. Moore noted:

“The type of Christianity which first was favored, then raised to leadership by Constantine was that of the Roman Papacy. But this was not the type of Christianity that first penetrated Syria, northern Italy, southern France, and Great Britain. The ancient records of the first believers in Christ in those parts, disclose a Christianity which is not Roman but apostolic. These lands were first penetrated by missionaries, not from Rome, but from Palestine and Asia Minor. And the Greek New Testament, the Received Text, they brought with them, or its translation, was of the type from which the Protestant Bibles, as the King James in the English, and the Lutheran in German, were translated.” — Dr. T. V. Moore, The Culdee Church, chapters 3 and 4, and Wilkinson, Our Authorized Bible Vindicated, pp. 25, 26.[ix]

There were those small groups of the true church in many lands.  However, the fact that those in the Celtic regions observed Passover on the 14th, before the Roman Catholic got there, absolutely should be seen as proof that the early non-Jewish church did not keep Passover on Sunday.

Even Catholic scholars acknowledge that the Celts kept Passover on a different day than the Roman Catholics did.  Notice the following report by Catholic theologian R. McBrien:

Pope Vitalin…supported efforts of the king of Northumbria, following the Synod of Whitby (664), to establish in England the Roman, as opposed to the Celtic, date for Easter (that is the Sunday after the Jewish Passover, rather than the Passover itself) and other Roman practices as well.[x]

Notice that the above account, written by a Catholic priest and scholar acknowledges that Rome changed Passover in Britain from the biblical date, which apparently the Celts still observed into at least the seventh century, to the Roman date.  Rome would not have felt that this was necessary, if it originally installed an Easter Sunday tradition into the British/Irish regions in the first or second century.

Footwashing was also a practice among the Celts. Notice this report from L Hardinge:

Feetwashing… was carried out long enough to be introduced among the earliest Celtic Christians.[xi]

Sabbath-keeping was also occurring in the Celtic regions until at least 886:

The Celtic Church which occupied Ireland, Scotland, and Britain, had the Syriac (Byzantine) scriptures instead of the Latin vulgate of Rome. The Celtic Church, with the Waldenses and the Eastern empire, kept the seventh-day Sabbath…

“Adomnan’s use of sabbatum for Saturday, the seventh day of the week, is clear indication from ‘Columba’s mouth’ that ‘Sabbath was not Sunday.’ Sunday, the first day of the week is ‘Lord’s day.’ Adomnan’s attitude to Sunday is important, because he wrote at a time when there was controversy over the question whether the ritual of the Biblical Sabbath was to be transferred to the Christians’ Lord’s-day.’ — A.O. and M.O. Anderson (editors) Adomnan’s Life of Columba, Thomas Nelson’s Medieval Texts, 1961, pages 25-26.

“The Old Testament required seventh-day Sabbath observance and, reason Adomnan’s editors, since the New Testament nowhere repealed the fourth commandment, the seventh-day was observed by all early Christians. The evidence they adduce suggests that no actual confusion between Sunday and ‘the Sabbath’ occurred until the early sixth century, and then in the writings of the rather obscure Caesarius of Arles. (Ibid., page 26.)…

The Roman ‘movement’ to supersede the Celtic Sabbath with Sunday ‘culminated in the production of an (apocryphal) ‘Letter of Jesus’, or ‘Letter of Lord’s day’, alleged to have been found on the altar of Peter in Rome; and is said in the annals to have been brought to Ireland by a pilgrim (c. 886). Upon this basis laws were promulgated, imposing heavy penalties for those that violated on Sunday certain regulations derived from Jewish prohibitions for Sabbath. . . . There is in fact no historical evidence that Ninian, or Patrick, or Columba, or any of their contemporaries in Ireland, kept Sunday as a Sabbath.’ (Ibid., page 28.).[xii]

James Moffat reported that the Sabbath was kept even beyond that, but was changed:

It seems to have been customary in the Celtic churches of early times, in Ireland as well as Scotland, to keep Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath, as a day of rest from labor, and Sunday, commemorative of the Lord’s resurrection, as one of rejoicing, with exercises of public worship.  In that case they obeyed the fourth commandment literally upon the seventh day of the week…

The queen insisted upon the single and strict observance of the Lord’s Day. People and clergy alike submitted, but without entirely giving up their reverence for Saturday, which subsequently sank into a half-holy day preparatory for Sunday.[xiii]

The queen mentioned above was Margaret who died in 1093.  Margaret was canonized a Roman Catholic saint in the year 1250 by Pope Innocent IV.  So, once again political power was used to try to stop people from following the biblical practices of early Christianity.

Thus, various historians have reported that beliefs of the true church of God, such as the seventh day Sabbath, Passover on the 14th, foot washing, and opposition to pagan sacraments, during the Pergamos era, can be documented as have also been in existence throughout parts of the British Isles.

    UCG Down 143+ Elders/Ministers

    Thursday, January 6th, 2011

    Laodicea
    Laodicea has many ineffective structures

    COGwriter

The AC (“Abigail Cartwright”) site reported last night that UCG had lost 143 ministers and elders.  Here are ten more since my last detailed report:

  • Mr. John Richard Seiver, (Local Elder, Houston S., TX), January 5, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. Frank Pierce, (Local Elder, Houston S., TX), January 5, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. David McCarble, (Local Elder, Houston S., TX), January 5, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. Dave DeHart, (Local Elder, Houston, TX), January 5, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. Dave Pavlik, (Local Elder, Akron, OH), January 2, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. Steve Moody, January 3, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. John Perry (Local Elder, Houston), January 3, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. Barry Korthuis (Local Elder, Denver, CO), January 3, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. Scott Lord, January 3, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • Mr. Tom Clark (Minneapolis, MN), January 3, 2011, resigned from UCG ministry
  • The reason my headline says 143+ is that I thought there were one or two names missing from the above, and the names of the South Africans who apparently left do not seem to be on the list of 143 that I looked at.

(Note:  LCG’s Steve Moody wants everyone to realize, “I would like to point out, the “Steve Moody” listed in this report is NOT me. I am a different Steve Moody, a faithful member of LCG and servant of the great God.”  UCG had someone else with the same name.)

As reported earlier, John Carmack (UCG member until quite recently) posted that UCG may have already lost nearly 60% of its elders/ministers in this crisis.  It is possible that this crisis may spread to other international areas of UCG as well.  For example, in addition to their USA roles, Tim Waddle was removed by UCG from the ministry in East Africa and Tom Clark from the UCG ministry in Ghana.

Last night, UCG itself posted the following from its President (Dennis Luker) and Chairman (Melvin Rhodes):

The Council of Elders and the home office administration would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for your love and support during this time of challenge we are collectively navigating in the United Church of God. Words alone cannot express the spiritual encouragement that has come from your prayers and messages of support. We deeply appreciate our devoted elders standing in the gap to hold our congregations together.

Your love and courage is reminiscent of the opening chapter of the United Church of God in 1995 when pastors, elders and members stood together to move forward with the precious truths of God.

The last statement above seems somewhat odd as those that have left UCG seem to be trying to start over like UCG started.  Not the other way around.  As I have repeatedly stated, I do not believe that the governmental structure of UCG ever would be effective in proclaiming the gospel to fulfill Matthew 24:14–nor do I believe that those who broke off and will become part of COGaWA or other such groups will as well.  I have been right about UCG since it first started because it rejected a key doctrine (governance) and always has had a lukewarm focus (overall, some with it had other views) towards proclaiming the gospel.

Some articles of possibly related interest may include:

Polycarp, Herbert W. Armstrong, and Roderick C. Meredith on Church Government What form of governance did the early church have? Was it hierarchical? Which form of governance would one expect to have in the Philadelphia remnant? The people decide and/or committee forms, odd dictatorships, or the same type that the Philadelphia era itself had?
Unity: Which COG for You? Why so many groups? Why is there lack of unity in the Churches of God? Has it always been this way? What can/should be done about it?
Differences between the Living Church of God and United Church of God This article provides quotes information from the two largest groups which had their origins in WCG as well as commentary.
There are Many COGs: Why Support the Living Church of God? This is an article for those who wish to more easily sort out the different COGs. It really should be a MUST READ for current and former WCG/GCI members or any interested in supporting the faithful church. It also explains a lot of what the COGs are all about.
Should the Church Still Try to Place its Top Priority on Proclaiming the Gospel or Did Herbert W. Armstrong Change that Priority for the Work? Some say the Church should mainly feed the flock now as that is what Herbert W. Armstrong reportedly said. Is that what he said? Is that what the Bible says? What did Paul and Herbert W. Armstrong expect from evangelists?
The Laodicean Church Era has been predominant circa 1986 A.D. to present. These are non-Philadelphians who mainly descended from the old WCG.

More world events aligning with 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect

    Thursday, January 6th, 2011

    COGwriter

When I wrote the book , 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect, my primary focus was on what would likely happen during the years 2012 through 2020.  But of course, for many of the events to occur, other world events need to align themselves for them to come to pass.  A few days ago, I reported about world events aligning with five predictions contained within the book.

Today, let’s look at another 5 (which will be labeled 6 through 10).

    6. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect explains that once the U.S. dollar is collapses, the world in general and the European replacement currency in particular will find it useful to greatly increase gold reserves to restore confidence in paper currencies (in Appendix B of the book).

After the India bought 200 metric tons of gold bullion from the IMF, financial traders and others reported that gold is now being considered to be part of the world’s reserve currency (India, China and Gold.  Seeking Alpha, November 5, 2009.  http://seekingalpha.com/article/171537-india-china-and-gold; Krishnan R. There’s a long-term case for non-dollar assets.  Live Mint, November 6, 2009.  http://www.livemint.com/2009/11/06224817/There8217s-a-longterm-case.html).

According to a November 14, 2009 story at the Center for Research on Globalization, it appears that a new currency with gold backing may be what will replace the U.S. dollar.  Specifically the story states that “the new currency will have gold backing” (Chapman B. A financial system which has almost exclusively benefited the wealthy.  CGR, November 14, 2009.  http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=16048).

Others have noticed that gold is becoming a reserve for currency for various nations (Picerno J.  Should You Buy Gold Now? CBS, December 9, 2009.  http://moneywatch.bnet.com/investing/article/gold-prices-soaring-should-you-buy-gold-now/371892/ Larkin N, Nguyen PD.  Gold Advances in New York on Demand for Alternative to Currency.  Bloomberg – Feb 17, 2010. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601012&sid=aRsOD3sQ0q6M) and even individual investors (Ratner J. Gold’s future bright as ‘anti-currency’.  Financial Post. May 3, 2010.  http://www.financialpost.com/news-sectors/story.html?id=2981775).   Gold hit several price records since the book came out, with the most recent in October 2010, and the Wall Street Journal says that it is because gold is seen as a hedge against the diminishing value of the US dollar (Whitaker M.  PRECIOUS METALS: Gold Breaches $1370, Seen As Currency Hedge.  Wall Street Journal, October 13, 2010.  http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20101013-711124.html).

    7. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect warns that the Large Hadron Collider, which was not even functional when the book came out, would likely develop technologies to be used militarily  by the coming European power.

On November 22, 2009, it was reported by the BBC that the Large Hadron Collider became functional and was providing useful technology for the Europeans (Rincon P. Large Hadron Collider progress delights researchers.  BBC, November 22, 2009.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8372737.stm).

On November 30, 2009, the Large Hadron Collider set a new world record, “the $8-billion collider located on the Franco-Swiss border successfully accelerated the machine’s twin beams of protons to 1.18 trillion electron volts Monday. That surpasses the previous collider record of 0.98 trillion electron volts, set in 2001 by America’s Tevatron collider, located at Fermilab outside Chicago…The collider isn’t even at full power yet.” (Johnson J.  Large Hadron Collider roars to life.  Los Angeles Times, December 1, 2009. http://www.latimes.

com/news/nation-and-world/la-sci-hadron1-2009dec01,0,7338976.story).  The New York Times reported that with its November and December  2009 results that its “spinoffs will invigorate the careers and labs in Europe, not the United States (Overbye D. Collider Sets Record, and Europe Takes U.S.’s Lead.  New York Times, December 9, 2009.  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/science/10collide.html).

It had important success in October 2010 (Heuer R. LHC protons 2010: mission accomplished.  European Organization for Nuclear Research, October 14, 2010.  http://user.web.cern.ch/user/news/2010/101014.html) and the Europeans announced they are planning to expand its capabilities (Attard E.  Malta workshop paves way for upgrade of CERN’s Hadron Collider.  The Malta Independent Online, October 15, 2010.  http://www.independent.com.mt/news.asp?newsitemid=113730).

And even though it will run into technical problems sometimes, it is highly likely that the Large Hadron Collider will spin off significant military technology as 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect suggests.

    8. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect warns that the USA will continue to greatly increase its debt (see Chapter 8).

The USA national debt clock registered 9.2 trillion dollars in April 2008, was 11 trillion in July 2009.

On February 12, 2010, President Obama signed a bill raising the USA debt ceiling to $14.3 trillion (http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gaXeUkifDBLCpg5SyHD0hgxn1EPw).

Because of problems like the Gulf Oil spill, in late May 2010 the USA decided to postpone certain oil exploratory projects (Achenbach J, Fahrenthold DA, Branigin W. Obama heads to Gulf Coast a second time as oil spill’s impact grows.  Washington Post.  May 28, 2010.  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/
    content/article/2010/05/28/AR2010052801495.html
), and this will result in less USA jobs and more USA debt.  A 20 trillion dollar debt is now expected (Hansen VD.  America’s humiliating debt.  The Philadelphia Inquirer, October 14, 2010.  http://www.philly.com/inquirer/opinion/20101014_America_s_humiliating_debt.html).

“Quantitative easing” is a more subtle way of increasing US debt.  And a “possible downside of quantitative easing is the risk of hyperinflation” (Fed Opts for Quantitative Easing, Bonds Purchases.  My Bank Tracker, November 3, 2010. http://www.mybanktracker.com/bank-news/2010/11/03/fed-quantitative-easing-decision/).

    US debt is increasing.

    9. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect warned that, “Because of domestic economic concerns and international pressures, Barack Obama is shifting priorities away from defense spending… This will help lead to the destruction of the United States, when the Europeans are ready and the U.S.A. is not” (Chapter 8).

The debt of the USA is now believed to likely impact defense spending (Debt Ceiling Issue Complicates Action on Defense Spending Bill.  CQ Politics, December 10, 2009. http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?parm1=5&docID=cqmidday-000003264025).

On April 8, 2010, President Obama signed a nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia which will reduce the total  nuclear and military strength of the USA (Loven J.  Obama In Prague: Russia Nuclear Arms Deal Signed With Medvedev.  The Huffington Post, April 8, 2010.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/08/
    obama-prague-russia-nuclear-arms-deal-medvedev_n_529726.html
).  The treaty was partially based on apparently flawed and overly optimistic assessment of the USA’s missile intercept abilities (Broad W, Sanger D. Review Cites Flaws in U.S. Antimissile Program.  New York Time, May 17, 2010.  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/18/world/18missile.html?hp).  Having less military power means that other powers (like Europe) gain strength relative to the USA.

A “permanent cap on defense spending at current levels” is now one of the items being considered to deal with the deficits (Sorensen A.  Why The Deficit Commission?  Time, April 27, 2010.  http://swampland.blogs.time.com/2010/04/27/why-the-deficit-commission/?xid=rss-topstories).  Furthermore, the USA’s top military partner, the United Kingdom, has also seriously cut its defense spending (LaFranci H. Big British defense cuts weaken Pentagon’s top military partner.  Christian Science Monitor, October 20, 2010. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Foreign-Policy/2010/1020/Big-British-defense-cuts-weaken-Pentagon-s-top-military-partner).

    10. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect warns that “for the daily sacrifices to stop, they will have had to start” (Appendix B).

And for the sacrifices to start, while a temple is not biblically required for that (Ezra 3:6), a sacrificial altar is (Ezra 3:2-3).  December 25, 2009, it was reported that the Temple Institute announced that it finished building a sacrificial altar (Ronen G. Model Altar of Unhewn Stones Completed at Temple Institute.  Israeli National News, December 25, 2009. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/135199).

    More US Debt

    Thursday, January 6th, 2011

“I will break the pride of your power” (Leviticus 26:19)

    COGwriter

As I have been warning for years, the US has too much debt and this will have terrible consequences.   Notice that others are more and more starting to realize this is dangerous:

US to cross the debt ceiling – End of the American dream?

    January 6, 2011

America, the nation of spenders, has now incurred $14 trillion dollars of debt. The national debt level is presently 14 times larger than what it was 30 years back. The US federal government is literally drowning in an ocean of debt…At present, the US debt ceiling is set at $14,294 trillion and considering the borrowing rate of the US government, 2.63 million more dollars every minute, the ceiling will be reached very quickly. Within the last 3 years, the US government has already raised the debt ceiling six times as what it was 3 years back…

Financial experts are querying if the US economy would crash as the debt ceiling is reached by the US government. Well, this would certainly haunt the world financial markets.  http://thenewsportalonline.com/us-to-cross-the-debt-ceiling-%E2%80%93-end-of-the-american-dream/117915/

If enough others start to realize how risky the US government is, interest rates will skyrocket, and the national debt will be greatly increased–beyond what has been happening in the past several years. This could be so bad that we could get to the point that if the US government took practically ALL THE INCOME OF ALL ITS PEOPLE it still would run a budget deficit. We are getting closer and closer to a scenario that could get there.

The USA has lived on borrowed money too long, and this will end in catastrophe according to Bible prophecy (cf. Habakkuk 2).

Prophecy moves forward–significant personal repentance is probably the only way out (as national repentance for the USA seems highly unlikely).

    Laodicea
    Laodicea has many ineffective structures

    COGwriter

The United Church of God (UCG) has had a difficult past 11 months.  From resignations of its president and various board members, to losing most of its Latin American members, to losing other congregations, to having elders even decline to accept being on its top body called the Council of Elders.

On December 23, 2010, UCG posted the following:

We believe that the current long and hard trial within the United Church of God is nearing its end.

We will all see if the crisis in UCG is almost over now or not–it certainly did not seem to be nearing its end on December 23.  UCG has lost dozens of ministers since then.  But there are bigger issues.

At least three semi-related groups have formed out of this mess.  Church of God – America (Leon Walker and Larry Salyer, et al), International Ambassador Outreach (Leon Walker, Larry Salyer, Ken Giese, et al), and Church of God , a Worldwide Association (Richard Thompson, Ken Giese, et al)–how well they will cooperate in the future is a questions (and COGA may already be gone and may be part of COGaWA–we will see what the conference next week will bring).  And there are a few other groups that are more “independent” as well.

I have reported about several of those groups and have severe doubts that they will do much as far as fulfilling Matthew 24:14 is concerned.  That scripture states:

14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.  (Matthew 24:14, NKJV)

So, if UCG, COGA, IAO, COGWA, etc. are not likely to do much with that, who is?  Well as regular readers of this page are aware, the Living Church of God has reached more people via television and lectures than any other COG (and possibly more than all of the COGs combined).  LCG also seems to have had the most baptisms of any group that had origins in the old WCG (cf. Matthew 7:15-20).

Now, getting back to Matthew 24:14, if UCG and the related groups have little part in fulfilling it, what is there role since as Matthew 24:14 says, the end comes afterwards?

Those groups, presuming that they still exist at the end, (though not necessarily all of their members as they still may have some Philadelphians in their midst) will not, unlike the Philadelphians (Revelation 3:7-10) be protected from the Great Tribulation and thus suffer through that.

And while most in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand will likely die and/or be taken captive, those in those lands and around the rest of the world who do not die will have a difficult end time role.

Now, I am fully aware that by writing what I have written some will not criticize me.  But, I believe that it is showing love of the brethren to point out that non-Philadelphians are NOT promised protection by Jesus in His messages to the seven churches of Revelation 2 & 3.

Yet, There Will Be a Non-Philadelphian Work During the Time of the Great Tribulation

Since they will be subject to the “hour of trial” that includes the Great Tribulation, the non-Philadelphias will in essence have one or two works during this time.

Jesus condemns the Church of the Laodiceans because they have a work that is lukewarm and not one that is cold or hot (Revelation 3:14-15).  All the Churches of Revelation 2 & 3, except Smyrna, which has died out, and Philadelphia, a portion of which remains are all criticized for their work and/or behavior. Many had a lukewarmness towards the work. This lukewarmness towards the work of God, while existing to some degree by some throughout history, became more prevalent after the death of Herbert W. Armstrong in 1986.

Over time, it has become clearer and clearer who were representing the gospel proclaiming, faithful Philadelphians, and who choose to have differing types of Laodicean works.  The fruits of the leaders in UCG, COGA, IAO, COGW, etc. suggest to me at least, that they are not Philadelphian.

Although people associated with Laodicea seem to be pleased with their lukewarm works, Christ clearly is not–and He will have them change or else (Revelation 3:14-19).

I believe that, during the tribulation, the Laodiceans and others, remnants of Thyatira and Sardis will become more fully involved in the work of God whether or not they know that now.  Some will be hot, persecuted and probably martyred while others will be cold, denying the faith.

Satan the dragon will unleash persecution against that part of the true Church that is not protected.

17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ (Revelation 12:17).

So during this time, the work of Laodicea, Sardis, and Thyatira will essentially show that they can still keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.  That will be part of the “patience of the saints” (Revelation 14:12).

I also suspect that some of these people will also help the two witnesses during this time as well by providing places to stay, food, and even probably encouragement.  Additionally, I believe that the offspring of the church which is subject to persecution will also be providing the testimony of Jesus Christ to some who will respond to the message of the two witnesses as well.

Notice that the Bible shows that ten-horned beast ends up with the remaining saints for that 3 ½ years:

24 The ten horns are ten kings Who shall arise from this kingdom.  And another shall rise after them;  He shall be different from the first ones, And shall subdue three kings. 25 He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, Shall persecute the saints of the Most High, And shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand For a time and times and half a time (Daniel 7:24-25).

1 And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns…4 Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” 5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. 6 Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. 7 It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them (Revelation 13:4-7).

The Bible does teach that the faithful who are killed will be blest (Revelation 14:13).  Circumstances suggest that they might, to a degree, help a multitude of people come out this tribulation (cf. Revelation 7:9,14).

So, there will be several works being done by the true Church during the Great Tribulation.  However, since Jesus condemns all the remaining Churches in Revelation 2 & 3 at the end, except the Philadelphian portion, then Christians should strive to be Philadelphian in holding fast to true doctrine while also placing their whole beings into supporting the work of that era to complete its mission as taught by Jesus in Matthew 24:14.

Remember that seven times related to the seven Churches of Revelation 2 & 3, Jesus states:

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (Revelation 2:7,11,17,29:3:6,13,22).

Thus the biblical messages to each of the churches is important for people to heed.  People need to ask themselves which church they should support.

Do they want to “persevere” (Revelation 3:10) with the group that does the Philadelphia work?  Or do they want to be part of the “people decide” group that Christ will vomit from His mouth (Revelation 3:16)?

I believe that those affected by this crisis who wish to support a more effective gospel-proclaiming organization should consider LCG.  And no, I am not on LCG’s payroll and no one at LCG asked me to write this.  I am praying, however, that readers will carefully check out the scriptures to see if what I have written is so.

Did Early Gentile Christians Celebrate Birthdays?

    History of Early Christianity

    COGwriter

It is a reasonably documented fact that Jews, including Christian ones, did not celebrate birthdays in the first and second centuries A.D.

Yet, what were the practices of the non-Jewish (Gentiles) converts to Christianity?

There is one birthday celebration mentioned in the New Testament, and it was not a good one.  And it was not one that involved Gentile Christians as it was before Jesus died.  And this celebration was so bad, that the one Jesus had called the greatest “among those born of women” (Matthew 11:11) was killed because of it:

But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.” And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her. So he sent and had John beheaded in prison. And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother (Matthew 14:6-11).

(The same account is also described in Mark 6:21-28).

Originally, even as more and more Gentiles began to profess Christ (so much so that they outnumbered those of Jewish heritage that did), the early Gentile leaders also did not endorse the celebration of birthdays. No early church writer endorsed the observance of birthdays by Christians, nor are they ever listed in the early observances of the Christian church.

Therefore, the celebration of birthdays, was clearly not part of:

… the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 3).

No early religious/church writing from the second century that I have seen (and I have read most that are available) seems to endorse (or even suggest) the celebration of birthdays by any who professed Christ.

Although he was not part of the Church of God, the writings of the early third century Catholic theologian Origen of Alexandria show that, even that late, Orthodox Catholics were against the celebration of birthdays. The Catholic Encyclopedia states:

Origen, glancing perhaps at the discreditable imperial Natalitia, asserts (in Lev. Hom. viii in Migne, P.G., XII, 495) that in the Scriptures sinners alone, not saints, celebrate their birthday (Martindale C. Christmas, 1908).

Here is some of what Origen wrote:

…of all the holy people in the Scriptures, no one is recorded to have kept a feast or held a great banquet on his birthday. It is only sinners (like Pharaoh and Herod) who make great rejoicings over the day on which they were born into this world below (Origen, in Levit., Hom. VIII, in Migne P.G., XII, 495) (Thurston H. Natal Day. Transcribed by Thomas M. Barrett. Dedicated to Margaret Johanna Albertina Behling Barrett. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume X. Copyright © 1911 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight. Nihil Obstat, October 1, 1911. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

The writings of the late third century Catholic theologian Arnobius show that, even that late, Catholics objected to the celebration of birthdays as he wrote:

…you worship with couches, altars, temples, and other service, and by celebrating their games and birthdays, those whom it was fitting that you should assail with keenest hatred. (Arnobius. Against the Heathen (Book I), Chapter 64. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 6. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1886. Online Edition Copyright © 2005 by K. Knight).

Thus birthday celebrations, even of gods and leaders, were condemned as far as the late third century by even Roman Catholic leaders.

There is no biblical, nor historical, evidence that Gentile converts to true Christianity observed birthdays.

Since early Christian did not celebrate birthdays, should you?
