New Zealanders are still rattled by earthquakes:

AP – July 18, 2011

Seismologists have recorded 7,500 earthquakes in Christchurch since September — an average of more than 20 a day. The rumblings are rattling the psyche of the still-battered city. They have left the land under thousands of homes unsafe to build on. Some people have left town entirely…“I’ve become much more attuned to what the public wants to know: ‘When will it stop and why are we having them,'” Furlong said. “To be honest, it’s really frustrating. Well, Jesus, of course, warned about a time with such issues:

8 … And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

We may be at this prophetic point as all the earthquakes and other problems that have happened in the past year could be considered as “troubles”.

The Bible repeatedly indicates that “natural disasters” are intended to get people (and nations) to repent.  I saw a US government report earlier today that showed that there were more than twice the number of earthquakes in 2010 than in 2009.  But that report did not give any hint about repentance.

As reported earlier, “Half of Christchurch wants to leave” (see LCG: Because of Earthquakes, Many in Southern New Zealand Want to Leave).  Yet, the idea of national repentance does not seem to have gotten much press coverage over there.

There will be other problems in New Zealand and elsewhere. The beginning of sorrows is not yet over, and the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7), AKA the Great Tribulation, will follow it.

The Britain is again taking a different stance than many other nations in the EU:

BRUSSELS – The U.K. has strongly rejected the idea of a European Union operations headquarters for planning and carrying out EU military and civil missions abroad…

Foreign Affairs Minister William Hague, describing the proposal…conceded that most EU member states were in favor of it, but said the decision would have to be taken by unanimity…

the U.K. felt that such a headquarters “would duplicate NATO structures and permanently disassociate EU planning with NATO planning,” and “would likely be a much more costly solution than existing structures.” http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?i=7125400&c=EUR&s=TOP

This is an interesting development for a couple of reasons.

First, it represents yet another occasion where the UK is going against the goals of the EU.  But secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it will help insure that NATO will hobble along longer.

I have long suspected that it may be partially under the guise of a joint NATO exercise taking place in North America that will be partially how the Europeans will be able to successfully attack the USA.  And once the USA is out of the way, the UK will not be able to stand against the EU itself.

Crown of the “Holy Roman Empire”

A reader forwarded me an item about the late Otto von Habsburg that stated that one of his titles was the King of Jerusalem.  Though I believe I had heard this before, I decided to confirm it with other sources today, such as the following from The Economist:

Archduke Otto von Habsburg, son of the last Austro-Hungarian emperor…

In 1922 he became the head of the House of Habsburg: “Your Majesty” to legitimists, and by the Grace of God “Emperor of Austria; King of Hungary and Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, Slavonia, Galicia and Lodomeria; King of Jerusalem, etc; Archduke of Austria; Grand Duke of Tuscany and Cracow; Duke of Lorraine, Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia, Carniola and Bukowina; Grand Prince of Transylvania; Margrave of Moravia; Duke of Silesia, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Guastalla, Auschwitz and Zator, Teschen, Friaul, Dubrovnik and Zadar; Princely Count of Habsburg and Tyrol, of Kyburg, Gorizia and Gradisca; Prince of Trento and Brixen; Margrave of Upper and Lower Lusatia”. The late Herbert W. Armstrong used to believe that Otto von Habsburg was one to watch as a leader in Europe. Otto von Habsburg was quite influential in helping put together what is now the 500,000,000 person empire called the European Union.

As I have mentioned before, all the emperors of the old “Holy Roman Empire” were part of what has been known as the Habsburg line. Charlemagne was crowned the first Holy Roman Emperor, reputedly with the crown shown above, by Pope Leo III in Rome on Christmas Night, 800 AD. And now, over 1200 years later, the descendants of that family are still influential in and near Europe.

Although he does not have the word “Habsburg” in his incredibly long name, Baron Karl Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg’s mother was a Habsburg which means that the Baron is a descendant of that line too–hence he may “legally” also be entitled to the use of the King of Jerusalem title (especially if some ceremony “officially transfers” that title to him).  He is one to watch in European politics as I have often written. He, for example, may just become the final one that the Bible refers to as the King of the North (Daniel 11:21-45) and Beast (Revelation 13). If the Baron is the one, having influential distant relatives may assist his attainment to power.

The legacy of Otto von Habsburg is likely to be favorable towards Karl zu Guttenberg.

Furthermore, both biblical and Catholic (Roman and Eastern Orthodox) prophecy tell of a leader who will spend time in Jerusalem.  This militaristic political leader, known that the final Beast or King of the North in Bible prophecy and the Great Monarch in Catholic prophecy, may find that having the title “King of Jerusalem” a justification for some of his actions.

Here is some information from my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect that documents some of the prophecies about this leader being in Jerusalem:

Now, in the book of Daniel there is another prophecy related to the end times that states:

²⁶ And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.  The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined. ²⁷ Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate (Daniel 9:26-27).

Notice that there is a “prince to come” from the people who destroy “the city” (probably Jerusalem; cf. Revelation 11:2) and that he will stop sacrifices and be related to an abomination that brings desolation. This leader will apparently change from a peaceful one to a militaristic one (cf. Isaiah 10:5–11)…

This King of the North seems to be identified in various “Catholic” (including some which would be considered Eastern Orthodox) writings as the head of a resurrected Roman Empire; hence he apparently is a European:

Bl. Rabanus Maurus (died 856): Our principal doctors agree in announcing to us, that towards the end of time one of the descendants of France shall reign over all the Roman Empire; that he shall be the greatest of the Empire; and that he shall be the greatest of the French monarch, and the last of his race. After happily governed his kingdom, he will go to Jerusalem, and depose on Mount of Olives his sceptre and crown. This shall be the end and conclusion of the Roman… Empire.

Monk Adso (died 992): Some of our Teachers say that a King of the Franks will possess the entire Roman Empire. This King will be the greatest and the last of all Monarchs, and after having prosperously governed his kingdom, he will come in the end to Jerusalem and he will lay down his sceptre and his crown upon the Mount of Olives and immediately afterwards, Anti-Christ will come…

Brother Louis Rocco (19th century): Terrible wars will rage all over Europe. God has long been patient with the corruption of morals; half of mankind He will destroy. Russia will witness many outrages. Great cities and small towns alike will be destroyed in a bloody revolution that will cause the death of half the population. In Istanbul (Constantinople) the Cross will replace the half-moon of Islamism, and Jerusalem will be the seat of a King. The southern Slavs will form a great Catholic Empire and drive out of Europe the Turks (Mohammedans), who will withdraw to North Africa and subsequently embrace the Catholic faith…

Forces of Great Monarch go to Jerusalem.  Daniel 11:31, Luke 21:20…

Daniel 11:31, Matthew 24:15–20, Luke 21:20, Daniel 12:11, 1 Thessalonians 5:2–3: It is approximately 3 ½ years after the seven-year deal began.  The forces of the King of the North are in Jerusalem in violation of the intent of that deal.  The abomination of desolation is present.  Some people heed Jesus’ words to flee…

It may be that prior to going to a place of protection (cf. Revelation 12:13–14), some Christians will flee out of the lands dominated by the rising King of the North prior to him moving into Jerusalem, probably during verses 28–30 of Daniel 11, as this is when the King of the North begins his anger against God’s most faithful…

Unlike in Daniel 11:30, the King of the North meets no strong naval resistance in verse 31.  This may be because he negotiated something with the U.S.A. to allow him (possibly with an “antipope,” see Chapter 10) to go to Jerusalem to broker “peace in the Middle East.”…

While the term “sacrifices” is not in the original Hebrew, Daniel 9:27 mentions what appears to be the same desolate abominations, and also that the same sacrifices and offerings will be stopped.  It may be that part of the reason the King of the North will give for going into Jerusalem with armies is to stop extremists from having daily sacrifices that may provoke the Muslims and others.

The Great Monarch, apparently with his forces, is expected to go to Jerusalem toward the beginning and end of his reign and fight:

Y. Dupont (20^th century): The Great King will be of Frankish descent, although his actual nationality is uncertain…It seems that he will travel twice to Jerusalem, once at the beginning of his reign…and again at the end to fight… and be killed…

Helen Otto Tzima (2000): Jerusalem will be invaded in WWIII and finally liberated by the Great Monarch.

Jerusalem is important, and although biblically, the “King of Jerusalem” would be a descendant of David of the Bible, it would seem to me that using the title “King of Jerusalem” could be politically expedient for the coming European leader, as both biblical and non-biblical prophecy teach that he will takeover Jerusalem for a while.

Upper “Sail” of French Nuclear Submarine Casabianca

In 2008, I reported that Brazil was interested in acquiring nuclear submarines (see Brazil Acquiring French Arms), now it is getting closer:

The Brazilian government has started work on a submarine programme which will include the construction of South America’s first nuclear subs.

The move will boost Brazil’s claim to be the strongest force in the region, and strengthen the country’s military assertiveness…The first, being built in collaboration with a French contractor, is due to come into service in 2016.  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2015731/Brazil-build-nuclear-submarines-dramatically-alter-balance-power-South-America.html

The acquisition of a French a nuclear submarine by Brazil shows that the nation is clearly emerging on the world scene to be more than simply a supplier of natural resources and some manufactured goods.  It also plans to build its own nuclear submarines with some technical assistance from France.  While some believe that this is partially to deal with issues like the Falkland Islands (and that may also be so), the reality is that I do not believe that Brazil has liked some of the comments that have come out of Venezuela over the past few years and it wants all the South American nations to understand that Brazil is the strongest power in South America.

Now, this new deal seems to indicate that at least some of Brazil’s future leading-edge military technology is to come from Europe. But I also suspect that because of its manufacturing abilities that Brazil ultimately may sell some military hardware to Europe in a few years.

Brazil is one of the so-called BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, China, and India).  And although sometimes grouped with the Asian powers, culturally, Brazil would seem to be much more European than Russian, Indian, and/or Chinese based upon what I have read.   Since there are many from Europe who live in Brazil, and because of the religious connections to Catholicism, even if Brazil sometimes politically 7 economically agrees with the Asians, I believe that it will end up closer to the Europeans.

Here is an item from the American news today:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) have been negotiating a modified fallback plan that could allow President Obama to raise the debt ceiling three times unless Congress disapproves…

Maya MacGuineas of the New America Foundation…“This is not supposed to be who we are: a country fighting over whether to pay our bills, being scolded by rating agencies — including in China — and on track to leave a shredded economy to the next generation because we spent years on a spending spree without paying the bills,” she wrote.  http://thehill.com/homenews/news/171885-budget-experts-raise-concerns-over-mcconnell-debt-limit-fallback-plan

Earlier, across the pond, BBC reported:

The US must raise its $14.3tn (£8.9tn) debt limit to borrow beyond 2 August…

“I am still pushing for us to achieve a big deal,” Mr Obama said in a White House news conference…

“I am confident that we cannot only impress the financial markets, we can also impress the American people that this town can actually get something done once in a while,” he added.

But the president warned the country is “obviously running out of time”.

“If Washington operates as usual and can’t get anything done, let’s at least avert Armageddon,” Mr Obama said.

While US President Obama was mainly using the term ‘Armageddon’ for emphasis, there are two problems with that.

The first, and most obvious biblically, is that Armageddon is mainly a military matter and is not directly dependent upon US debt ceiling talks.  Biblically, it is clear that Armageddon will not be averted:

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

15 “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.  (Revelation 16:12-16)

The above would not be part of sacred scripture if it was not going to happen.

The second problem with the US President’s statement that I would like to address is that while the USA will likely take steps to get past its current debt ceiling issue, the reality is that every proposal I have seen from the Obama Administration results in an increase of debt for the USA basically in perpetuity (proposals that supposedly balance the budget after he is out-of-office are not credible to me or many others).

Since the USA seems intent upon increasing debt (as the current ‘crisis’ has to do with RAISING the DEBT ceiling AGAIN), this will continue to insure that the USA is the most indebted nation in the history of humankind.  Enough so, that presuming there is an end time fulfillment of the following passages (and I am convinced that according to the Bible there are), this will be a lot worse than what Barack Obama has considered will be the long term consequences of continuing to increase debt:

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man… 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8).

The above prophecy will be fulfilled at the time of the end according to related scriptures (cf. “The message was true, but the appointed time was long…in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come”, Daniel 10:1,14). Daniel 8:19, 11:27,29,35 use same the Hebrew term for “appointed time” as Habakkuk 2:3, while Daniel 10, using a different term, ties the latter days to the time in Daniel 8:19. Habakkuk 2 was not fulfilled in its entirety anciently. Also, it makes little sense that Habakkuk’s comments would be directed towards the modern nation of Israel as it does not have enemy creditors. It must be a nation or group of nations with some prominence at the appointed time of the end.

This problem will cause sudden destruction among those who are spiritually drunk:

3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. (1 Thessalonians 5:3-7)

Notice that both Paul and Habakkuk seem to have tied drunkenness in with this sudden calamity (so did Jesus in Luke 21:34-35). Truly the USA is not spiritually sober.

Notice how Ezekiel’s writings confirm that those who made profits improper will be punished:

13 “Behold, therefore, I beat My fists at the dishonest profit which you have made, and at the bloodshed which has been in your midst. 14 Can your heart endure, or can your hands remain strong, in the days when I shall deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and will do it. 15 I will scatter you among the nations, disperse you throughout the countries, and remove your filthiness completely from you. (Ezekiel 22:13-15)

Borrowing money that will not be paid back is a “dishonest profit” which the American (as well as British) peoples have been living off of for the past several years. They will be scattered for this and their filthiness (see also Will the Anglo-Nations be Divided?). Sexual immorality and abortion are simply some outward signs of this filthiness.

Right now, the USA crisis is that it wants and hopes to increase debt and borrow more from its foreign creditors, yet its leaders believe that not increasing debt will be a greater calamity.

The USA is setting itself up for financial ruin, and even worse.  Watch (Mark 13, Matthew 24).

FIRST for the rather dramatic bad news: a United States of Europe will come into being by the end of the year, perhaps even by the end of the summer.

Whether or not the author’s timing is right can be debated, but many of his points are of interest.

When Europe was still recovering from being devastated in World War II, in the December 1948 issue of The Plain Truth Herbert W. Armstrong predicted a coming “United States of Europe” (Armstrong HW. Now It Can Be Told…The Plain Truth,December 1948, p. 5).  He also later predicted that Britain would not end up as part of the final United States of Europe (by whatever name that it would have), that a European currency with German backing would likely exists, and that a re-risen Germany would be the driving power behind the final European beast power.

Whether or not Patrick O’Flynn ever heard of Herbert Armstrong or Herbert Armstrong’s predictions is unclear to me.  But what is clear is that he is coming to some of the same conclusions of Herbert Armstrong many decades after Herbert Armstrong made similar public statements (Herbert Armstrong died over 25 years ago).

While I am not questioning the motivation of those who are currently trying to deal with Europe’s financial and other problems, the Bible warns that a truly militaristic power will emerge (cf. Revelation 13:1-4).  And events are aligning with the understanding that we in the Living Church of God have related to certain aspects of end time Bible prophecy.

In its latest TW News & Prophecy, the Living Church of God reported:

“EU’s Financial Hurricane Is About to Hit,” read a sobering headline in this week’s Times. This week something critical happened in reaction to leaked information that the EU would allow Greece to redeem some of their bonds at their current financial status–50% less than their original worth. The news scared Italian investors with the notion that the same could happen to them. The result? Italian bonds immediately dropped to 70% and 80% of their value. For a small nation this would be of little concern, but Italy holds an unusually high amount of bonds–third in the world behind the U.S. and Japan. All this translates into the reality that Italy’s financial crisis is much more acute than originally thought.

According to experts, “For if the flow of money out of the Italian bond market accelerates through the summer, the crisis could spin out of control, causing a break-up of the euro as early as September or October, the ‘financial hurricane season’ when serious financial disruptions generally occur” (Times, July 13, 2011). The resulting call is for the rapid formation of a Eurozone-wide financial union, or possibly an EU-wide union that would include nations like Britain who are not part of the Euro. It also sounds like the September-October period may be the deadline.

Students of Bible Prophecy understand that there must eventually be a strong financial union between certain nations and kingdoms in Europe for the creation of the Beast power to occur (Revelation 17:12-13). Just who will be part of this union is a big question that may be answered sooner than many may have anticipated.

Unlike the USA that intentionally added a lot of debt throughout the recession and so-called “recovery”, the Europeans have shied away from those types of debt increases, other than those they have felt have been necessary to keep countries out of default (as well as the “usual” budget deficits).  Also, while the reforms and cuts may not have gone far enough, various austerity programs have now been approved by most of the so-called PIIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and Spain) in Europe.   And more may be needed.

The Bible shows that Europe must be restructured (Revelation 17:12-13)–but that particular restructure that Revelation refers to is probably not going to happen for several years.  However, to get to that point, there likely will be a variety of changes in what the EU is and how it is supposed to work.  While Europe will always have fragility issues per Daniel 2:42-43, it will also be much more unified than it is today–as it would seem to have to be to fulfill certain aspects of Bible prophecy.

Otto von Habsburg’s death is being mourned today:

VIENNA – Thousands of mourners joined European royalty on Saturday for the funeral of Otto Habsburg-Lothringen, the eldest son of the last Austrian emperor...“He always knew that there is much more which unites us on the European continent than divides us. It was a most important message for all of us,” Poland’s Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, told Austrian television.

The late Herbert W. Armstrong used to believe that Otto von Habsburg was one to watch as a leader in Europe. Otto von Habsburg was quite influential in helping put together what is now the 500,000,000 person empire called the European Union.

In the 21st century there are Habsburg’s (sometimes spelled Hapsburg) with political influence in at least Austria, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Sweden, Ukraine, and the European Parliament. Perhaps I should mention that many of the queens of France and Portugal were daughters of Habsburgs (as well as some in other lands as well) (see also Habsburg Family Still Influential in and Near Europe for more details).

Otto von Hapsburg Dies at 98. The oldest son of Austria-Hungary’s last emperor died last Monday. Otto von Hapsburg became the head of the Hapsburg family in 1922, at the age of nine, when Charles I, his father, died. In the latter half of the 20th century, Otto von Hapsburg became a key force for the European integration we are seeing today. European Commission President Barroso called him “a great European… who gave an important impetus to the European project throughout his rich life” (www.abc6.com). As an acquaintance and guest of Mr. Herbert Armstrong, Otto von Hapsburg visited Ambassador College in the 1980s and shared his vision of a united Europe in interviews published in The Plain Truth magazine.

The passing of this fascinating and influential man—the son of an emperor—reminds us of the pivotal times we are living in. The world is waiting for one final king to rise over a united Europe, who will exercise great authority and will “continue a short time” (Revelation 17:10). Ten other “kings” will give their sovereignty to him and fight against the returning Jesus Christ (verses 12-14). But the “called, chosen, and faithful” saints will be with Christ, and share in His victory over this coming dictator. Brethren, these are incredible and historic times! As these events unfold, we must never lose sight of who we are, why we are here, and what’s just ahead!

All the emperors of the old “Holy Roman Empire” were part of what has been known as the Habsburg line. Charlemagne was crowned the first Holy Roman Emperor, reputedly with the crown shown above, by Pope Leo III in Rome on Christmas Night, 800 AD. And now, over 1200 years later, the descendants of that family are still influential in and near Europe.

Although he does not have the word “Habsburg” in his incredibly long name, Baron Karl Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg’s mother was a Habsburg which means that the Baron is a descendant of that line too. He is one to watch in European politics as I have often written. He, for example, may just become the final one that the Bible refers to as the King of the North (Daniel 11:21-45) and Beast (Revelation 13). If the Baron is the one, Having influential distant relatives may assist his attainment to power.

The legacy of Otto von Habsburg is likely to be favorable towards Karl zu Guttenberg.

We knew the game of brinksmanship on the debt ceiling was coming. As the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling deadline approaches, it’s game on…

You’ve undoubtedly heard some of the posturing related to this situation. The president warned that Social Security checks may not be issued, and military personnel may go unpaid if Congress doesn’t agree to an increase the national debt. Both Moody’s and the S & P stand ready to lower the U.S. credit rating in the event of default.

If you believe some of the rhetoric employed by the politicians, we stand on the brink of economic collapse if trillions more in borrowings can’t be approved immediately… Are the threats of crisis and catastrophe real, or is it just a tactic for politicians to continue buying support from their favored constituents? At this point, there are no good answers and it’s hard to know what to hope for. The damage, it seems, has already been done and our nation will suffer the consequences.

If there should be some interruption in government funds to the entitlement class, look out. Demonstrating mobs won’t take long to assemble.

Now, to address one of his points, yes the threat of crisis and catastrophe are real. If the US dollar was not the world’s reserve currency, the short-term consequences of the current situation would be much worse than they already are.  It is, however, the longer term consequences that should be considered.

Notice what God inspired the Prophet Habakkuk to write thousands of years ago, as well as some comments on it:

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man… 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8).

The U.S. and the British-descended peoples have enjoyed living off the resources of the world, but the prophet Habakkuk warns: “… Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the people shall plunder you” (Habakkuk 2:7–8). (Winnail D. Regardless what many pundits say, the U.S.A. is dangerously at risk of staggering from a recession to a complete economic collapse in the coming years.  Scripture warns that America and the British-descended nations (modern Jacob) will be consumed by our creditors, that this will lead to economic and literal slavery, and that this tragic collapse will happen suddenly and when many do not expect it (Isaiah 1:7, Habakkuk 2:7, I Thessalonians 5:3).  Stock markets may temporarily recover, but “modern Jacob’s” future is written in scripture.  Fundamentally, our economies are broken.  But much more condemning is that our nations continue to reject God and His laws regarding marriage, Sabbath observance, sexual immorality, pagan holidays, murder, theft, lying, violence, and more. It is the the United States and its Anglo-allies (like the UK) that have loaded pledges of debt in these end times that they really do not expect to pay back.   The crisis is real, though I do not believe that the worst catastrophes can happen for several years.  Deficit spending will cause bigger problems than even the experts who see it coming normally understand.

A Canadian author today had some interesting comments:

If a U.S. default does not last very long — that is, less than a few days — it would likely prove surprisingly bullish for Canada.But if the default extends itself longer, Canada would be dragged down after the United States into a catastrophic failure…Three quarters of Canada’s exports go to the United States… http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/07/16/david-frum-will-america%E2%80%99s-debt-crisis-have-canadian-aftershocks/

So, yes, other nations, specifically Canada, may be affected by the current situation.  But even if it is resolved (which I and the above author suspect will happen), ultimately, I believe that Canada will share in the catastrophe coming to the USA.

In his commentary today, Charles Knowlton, of the Living Church of God, wrote about one reason that the USA is having debt problems:

How did such a rich country as the U.S. fall into such crushing financial debt? Somewhere in its history, a substantial number of its people quit giving of their best, and started to look out for how much they could take from their fellow Americans.

Certainly we must help the truly needy; God Himself taught Israel to make provision for assisting its widows and orphans and those who are genuinely poor and destitute (e.g. Deuteronomy 14:29; James 1:27). Today, in America, millions languish in unemployment—willing and eager but unable to find work. Shockingly, however, it is not uncommon to find other Americans who avoid work and instead hold out their hands for assistance, neglecting to do all they can to better their own condition.

God’s word, the Bible, is full of advice as to how we can prosper by using the abilities God has given us. We read: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). In other words, whatever we set out to do, we should do it with all of our strength, heart, and ability. There was a time when explorers crossed a continent with that ideal in mind. Farmers tended crops with that ideal. Parents reared children with that ideal. People recognized the task at hand, however daunting it may have seemed, and they applied themselves to it with every bit of God-given energy they had.

In 1940, at an eighth-grade commencement ceremony, one speaker extolled the virtue of “Doing the best you can, with what you have, where you are.” This was before the U.S. became involved in World War II, at a time when the nation was still reeling from the Great Depression.

I remember that speech so clearly because I was there. Consider the three parts of the speaker’s exhortation. The first is to “do our best” the second is “with what we have” and the third is “where you are.”

There is a fine line between helping the needy and harming the lazy. A well-administered social safety net provides genuine help to those who cannot help themselves, but a feel-good “handouts” program can actually sap us of our motivation to “do our best.”

Historically, LCG has focused on more obvious sins, but the above is also a factor.

While I believe that the USA President and Congress will somewhat “paper-over” that nations more immediate crisis, the long term trend according to the detailed plans I have seen come from the Republican or Democratic politicians  is to increase the total amount of USA debt.  And while a couple of presidential candidates (Ron Paul comes to mind) indicate that they will not increase the debt, they have not released a detailed solution that I have seen that appears likely to be implemented.

The USA seems determined to increase debt, and there will be severe consequences down the line.  The Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21), the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7), will likely start in several years, and those who survive and have ignored the seriousness of the USA debt problem, will likely be shocked about how much of a catastrophe the debt will really bring on.

A new study finds that most Israelis wish to become part of the European Union:

BEERSHEVA (EJP)—A new study conducted by the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev reveals that a vast majority (81 percent) of Israelis support joining the European Union (EU) and more involvement and deeper cooperation with European organizations. “The results also show that there is widespread misperception about the Israeli public’s real attitudes toward the EU,” said Sharon Pardo, head of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Studies in the university’s department of politics and government.

I suspect that partially because of how many in Israel have not been pleased with certain comments from US President Barack Obama, and what is going on with world opinion, that they feel that the EU and not the USA would be a safer place for them to be.

However, that is not quite so according to Bible prophecy.

The European King of the North will arise.  But before he fully does, he will confirm a peace deal for seven years (a prophetic week) apparently involving Israel, that he will decide has to be broken in the middle of it (Daniel 9:27).  Since most in Israel apparently want closer cooperation with the Europeans, they will be likely swayed that accepting the peace deal might help them become an equal part of the European Union.

What will happen a few years after the deal will not please those in Israel (which occupies much of the land of ancient Judea) according to Jesus (Matthew 24:15-22) and the prophet Daniel (Daniel 11:31-43).

While certain prophetic signs seem to be tarrying, others are lining up with Bible prophecy.  The idea that the Israelis want to become closer to the Europeans is one more event that I believe helps set the stage for the fulfillment of certain prophecies.
